First Time Go!
Carleanth is the name of the city, that my story will be playing in. It is cleanly divided into two parts that are mostly isolated isolated from one another.1) Carleanth
Perclanth is what the higher class call their quarter. Originally it was Pure-Carleanth and eventually, mainly because it sounds similar when said quickly, it became Perclanth. It is undoubtedly the cleaner one of the quarters, with the biggest houses and the best roads for their carriages. The people wear high quality clothes and have better shops around as they can actually afford the products. There is no actual restriction for those that don't live in that quarter, but they are definitely unwanted guests. Some try their luck and beg in those parts of Carleanth, but mostly unsuccessful. They are ignored by the wealthy who are scared of illnesses caused by lack of hygiene.
Perclanth has everything one would want to have. There is a big market every Friday, many shops selling different goods, as well as cafés, restaurants and more. It also has its own church and cemetery. Furthermore it is also where the court building and police station are located, which used to make Perclanth the more protected quarter of the two.
Oclanth (Old-Carleanth) is the second part of the city. The people there seem to live in a different world, mostly in slums and barely having the means to survive. A well in the middle of Oclanth serves as social hotspot if it can be called that, as the inhabitants of Oclanth don't often socialize. Sometimes a few people can be seen together, having a moment of small talk, only to then quickly retreat. Other than in Perclanth, where there is always a feeling of polite contentment and community in the air, in Oclanth there is distrust and bitterness.
Apart from slums, big areas of Oclanth are taken by fields and stables where the city gets its food supplies, the roads are bumpy and bad for carriages. There is also a school, some small food shops, a small chapel and a cemetery, but the gravestones are often rocks that have been found on a field or a piece of wood with a name carved in that would eventually wither away. The chapel and school are made from wood and tend to crack so loudly in the slightest bit of wind that many don't understand why they didn't collapse yet.
The Oclanthans are known to be the first to catch illnesses in Carleanth, but they also quickly die out again due to their tendency to keep to themselves. The hospital in located in Perclanth.
Although unofficial, it can't be denied that the inhabitants are split into classes and the Perclanthans want nothing to do with the Oclanthans, going so far that the latter have difficulties finding work or a school for their kids. Because of that the undesired and low paid work on the fields is done by Oclanthans only, where there is no possibility of getting in contact with Perclanthans. With a government of Perclanthans the city is prone to corruption leading to the richest becoming more rich and the poorest and even the middle class becoming poor and poorer, to the point even that there was no middle class any longer but only the few rich and a mass of poor.
Due to Perclanth's rejecting behavior, it has become a two way road with Oclanth supplying Perclanth like before, but not wanting anything to do with them either.
This was the state of Carleanth before the big turn around.
On one meaningful night, the perclanthan government was overthrown, when Oclanthans broke into the government building as well as the police station. It was a night filled with fights and battles, ending with many deaths but also the victory of Oclanth, mainly due to the big majority of Oclanthans in Carleanth. Oclanthans filled the place of the police and government, but while the majority of Oclanth still believed that this would be a turn around, a general improvement and fair distribution of resources, it ended up being a game of revenge, turning everyone against everyone, bringing neighbor to spy on neighbor.
A new rule was introduced into Carleanth, saying that whoever spotted wrong behavior and reported it to the police would get half of the person's wealth. The other way around, a person misreporting would lose half their wealth to the other. Only that wrong behavior had never been defined. Corruption and such, which had been a common occurrence before, were clear, but what about a person expressing a negative opinion about something that was commonly viewed positive? It was expression of opinions where the problem came up.
Oclanthans were suddenly very much treated lenient in everything they did, while Perclanthans had to watch their every step. Overall, not much had changed in the everyday life of the Oclanthans, except for a few that were now working in Perclanth. There were still no Perclanthans working on the fields, they kept their lives or went into prison.
And with many Perclanthans losing their wealth to this new kind of law, suddenly everyone was looking for a misstep with everyone, this was a very convenient new way of income. That was when the first people started to leave Carleanth, risking everything, trying to find something else, something better.
Between the two parts of Carleanth, there is a big paved area with a stage on it, serving as a place for general announcements. It used to be a location where plays were performed and mainly Perclanthans came together to spend some time together. Now, after the oclanthan take over, it is a place of shame. Misbehaving people are publicly brought there for trial, while the court building now serves as second prison.
Surrounded by desert-like landscape, the city seems to be an island of survival, with the promise of probable death by either heat or wild animals to all that leave to explore or with hope to find something better elsewhere.
Carleanth would have been hot like that as well, if it hadn't been for a spell that had been cast on the city some centuries ago, making it possible for the residents to grow nutrient plants to survive.
