Hilda took his hand and he pulled her back up, but she seemed only to come closer. For a split second, he thought that he'd yanked her up too hard and now she was falling onto him. However, it turned out that she was just hugging him, her voice beset with gratitude and possibly relief from that traumatic geese attack. Surprised, he raised his arms slowly to hug her back, just so he didn't look like an awkward stone column with pink tinted cheeks. The boy was not used to being hugged by anyone at all. His parents were not the affectionate type, after all. The contact and heartfelt gratitude made him blush profusely.

"No worries, Hilda," he said slowly, giving her one pat too many in his awkwardness, as if she were a biscuit in need of kneading. "Always happy to help. Glad you're okay."

Before he knew it, Hilda had turned on the goose that had bitten her, and set its butt on fire. Avery watched, stunned, as it unfroze and began to run everywhere, honking loudly. Wow, what a trigger-happy psychopath girl! Of course, he already knew firsthand what it was like when the girl felt she had been wronged, since he had ended up in the Great Lake from his boat ride, after all. Soon enough, the flaming goose (yum, roast goose) was Flippendo-ed into another goose, and Hilda proceeded to strike a strange pose like she was dabbing or something.

A thought clicked in Avery's mind: Weren't these geese furniture? They can't possibly be allowed to set school property aflame! "Hilda! We need to put out this fire! They're actually school furniture!" he exclaimed, rushing to the flaming goose and taking off his robe in the process. He flapped his robe at the goose's butt, hoping to put it out. But maybe he was just fanning the flames at this point. "A little help, please!" he called out, as he chased the goose around the hallway with his robes. They really needed a little help with the fire before it spread...

Santario yawned as she wandered the halls of the vast castle, bored out of her mind. She had been spending a lot of time interning in the hospital wing, so she had taken this weekend off from it; they had duelling practice yesterday, and that meant today was free. Which would have been fine and dandy if she could have found a single person she had actually wanted to spend time with. Maybe she could head back to her dorm, grab one of her books, and perch herself near the fountain while it was still warm enough to be outside for more than a few moments at a time.

Then again, it was also lunchtime, and she should probably make her way down to the great hall and get something to eat. Maybe San would find Percival since he seemed to be nowhere to be found that morning. Something that seemed to irk her more than she thought it should have. A yell caught her attention and pulled her out of her thoughts.

"A little help, please!"

The yell of a boy accompanied by… Honking? Santario drew her wand and rounded the corner, only to find four first-year Slytherins combatting a horde of geese… Well, four geese and two pieces of furniture which told her immediately that these weren’t geese. One of the girls was striking some kind of pose that Santario didn't understand, but perhaps it was in victory of some sort. Maybe she set the fire? One of the boys was trying to catch the goose but really that was a great way to get bitten.

Santario pointed at Ming, who seemed to be holding one of the geese in the air. “Concentrate on keeping it up; one less we have to police.” Her French-accented voice commanded before assessing the one on fire. “Extinguo.” Santario flourished her wand in the direction of the goose that was on fire. Another was dancing and therefore occupied. “Reparifarge!” Was aimed at the same goose that had only moments before been set on fire. It would need a repairo before it was over, but it was savable.

“Whomever else can levitate, I suggest you raise up the other one that is not currently dancing and focus on it so you can keep it in the air.” Santario’s eyes squinted as she looked at Liana, the girl was not uninjured, but whether it was from the furniture geese or herself, Santario did not know. She decided to take a bet that the first year had backfired a spell on herself since she did not see any physical cuts or bite marks. “Reparifors!” A purple light would wash over the girl, with waves of relief washing away most of the pain. “Work as a team, and the last of these will be easily dealt with. Where did these even come from anyway?!” They weren't old enough to perform the avifors spell. San wasn't exactly sure it was against Professor Wade's character to pull a prank, but she did doubt he would let it get out of hand like this. No this seemed like the work of people who were as thick as shite and only half as handy.

Miss Kerr this, Miss Kerr that, Miss Kerr! Miss Kerr? Miss Kerr... The formal and perfectly appropriate form of address was, for some reason, getting on her nerves much more than it should have. The girl could have sworn she still heard Ming Miss Kerr-ing when the foul fowl began abusing her with its enormous, heavy wings. However, at that moment she was too preoccupied with shielding her face from the vicious hits, and hence could not snap at the boy.

''Can someone- ouch-! Please- ah-! Help?'' she let out through gritted teeth, no longer even aware of who could still come to her rescue. Of course, there was only one person who could, since Avery and Hildegard were engaged in a secluded battle against several of the avians. Had she remembered that her sole hope was Hui Ming, she likely wouldn't have called for aid, even with the harassment she was currently enduring. But she called, and he responded. With a verbal plea for the goose to cease its attack. At that moment, she would have liked nothing more than to pick up the brutal bird and propel it at the Chinese boy; alas, she had not the strength.

His second attempt was considerably more successful, though. Suddenly the pummeling ceased, and the goose began honking in befuddlement, its bright orange legs tapping a merry dance on the floor. The first-year girl stepped back and cautiously lowered her hands from her face, scanning the environment to make sure that the danger was truly passed. Wide hazel eyes stared at the fowl for a few moments before seeking out the face of her saviour. An arrogant, self-absorbed Muggleborn who thought he was better than everyone, and who, apparently, could indeed cast spells better than Liana. The mixture of indignation, shame and gratitude created quite a messy swirl of emotion in the poor girl's head. Did this really mean he was better than most of their peers? Or just that she was no better than a Muggle spawn? And did this act of rescuing her now put her in his debt? For some reason, she felt like she really, really wanted to hit him. Or even start crying. She certainly did not want to take a page out of Hildegard's book and embrace her saviour.

''I- I'm... ah-'' the girl started, not quite sure what was going to come out of her mouth. ''I'm- deeply... grateful?'' she tested the sound of the expression. It didn't quite describe her current feelings in detail, but then again, she didn't plan on revealing that she was adequately grateful and deeply desirous of challenging him to a duel right there and then to prove that he was not better than her. There was an irritation in her eyes, a sort of pressure and heat, making her blink a few times to try and chase it away before her vision could become blurry with unnecessary fluids. ''Anyway,'' Liana swallowed, trying to rid her throat of the dry lump that seemed to be strangling her from within. ''I guess I better get back to untrans-'' she stopped in the middle of the overly-syllabley word, her attention drawn to the flaming feathery projectile that zoomed right past.

''HILDEGARD, WHY IN MERLIN'S NAME WOULD YOU USE FIRE?!'' the redhead exclaimed, horrified by the utter disregard for everyone's safety. What if that panicked goose ran into either of the girls, or Avery? They could end up in a hospital ward with severe burns! In her outrage, she all but forgot the existence of a spell that could put flames out.

It was a stroke of amazing luck that the older girl showed up when she did, and with a few practiced motions of her wand removed the biggest source of the chaos, restoring it back into its original, albeit somewhat-singed, form. As Liana turned to thank their hero, she momentarily felt as if a bucketful of icy-cold water was poured over her. The upperclassman who came to their rescue was a known face, both as a Slytherin prefect and, more importantly, as the co-captain of the duelling team the first-year so aspired to join. Had she spectated Liana's blunder with the rebounded spell? The younger girl really hoped that she hadn't. The redhead straightened up, doing her best to look confident and in control, not quite aware that her disheveled hair was adorned with a few renegade feathers of the presently-dancing goose.

''Thank you!'' she sang out as the healing charm soothed the throbbing in her back and left elbow. She would have to make sure to learn this spell herself, as soon as possible.

Since Santario was commandeering them like a true leader, Liana sprang to action. There was the one unrestrained goose still on the loose, but another one was much closer to the redhead; indeed, too close for comfort, since the creature's tappy legs did not disable its beak nor wings that could inflict a considerable amount of pain.

''Reparifarge!'' she incantated, aiming at the dancing animal. To her glee, the spell succeeded at first try, and the massive white bird began changing into a wooden chair. The joy and rising pride at an impressive show of Transfiguration ability were quenched unexpectedly when the transformation halted. The chair now had four wooden legs, a backrest... and two white wings that were flailing frantically. Was this just the way enchanted birdless wings were meant to behave, or did some part of the living goose remain in the piece of furniture, suffering due to its bizarre state?

The girl felt her cheeks beginning to burn at the thought that this error was witnessed by a duellist from her own house. In addition, she had failed her initial attempt at spell-casting yet again, which seemed to be a recurrent theme at this point. True, this time the spell did not backfire, blasting her into a wall, which was a marked improvement over her previous mishap. But there was an evident need to practice precision and focus in stressful situations. And why not start now?

''Reparifarge,'' a repeatead spell, cast with a determined focus, alleviated any suffering the half-goose may have had, turning it into a perfectly normal chair. The girl turned to Ming who was still restraining the second-to-last bird. ''I'll untransfigure this one, then you Levitate the remaining goose so I can change it back too,'' she laid out the strategy quickly, since this way of combating their feathery foes seemed to be the most efficient so far. This time, she had wisdom enough to step back before casting, so the result of the transformation wouldn't send her stumbling blindly in fear of being crushed. ''Reparifarge,'' the girl pronounced for the third time, turning the floating bird back into a yet another hefty table. That was that. She had done quite well, considering how difficult the spell was supposed to be. Her hurt at being momentarily bested by Ming seemed to heal almost as if a Reparifors had been cast on it as well.

''We're not sure what exactly happened, the geese were coming out of the Transfiguration classroom when we arrived,'' she responded to the Prefect's question. The girl returned her attention back to the remaining bird then, ready to perform the last spell as soon as Hui would lift it into the air.

''I'm- deeply... grateful?''
Hui Ming had been expected to deal with many things over his short eleven years of life, but feelings and girls were always something he had never quite had to grapple with. She was on the verge of tears; he could see that. But what was he to say to that?

All the alternatives that came to his head seemed like bad options. This is just how the magic world is came off badly; It is not a big deal seemed dismissive.

He cleared his throat. "Come, let us clean up this mess. We'll need to rescue the others before they manage to find themselves in more trouble" A weak smile. "And then perhaps we can go back to the issue of Devil's Snare."

The girl seemed to respond positively; before her eyes fell on whatever fiendish horror Schneider seemed to have put into effect this time. As Miss Kerr all but screamed at the disabled girl like some possessed banshee. Despite the present situation, Hui Ming could not but be amused. The proper Miss Kerr putting on such a public display of ill-manners was amusing in and of itself, but that it was triggered by Schneider made it all the better.

"Because she's a problem, that's why," Ming muttered reply was a stark contrast to Miss Kerr's outrage, cold dispassion to her fiery rage; his voice just loud enough that only the redhead would be able to hear.

He was rather hoping to see some fireworks, as more people realised what a liability Schneider was. But his hopes were dashed by the arrival of an older girl who - wait wasn't she the duelling co-captain and a prefect to boot?

Well, her competence clearly showed. For in a matter of a few seconds and a handful of spells, the senior managed to quell the chaos and bring it to relative control.

Miss Kerr, apparently inspired by the spell cast on her by the prefect, went back to the geese with a renewed gusto, untransfiguring one of her assailants with relative ease. When she laid out the strategy for tackling the remnants of their assailants, Ming just gave her a quiet nod of affirmation. As she cast her last untransfiguration, freeing him to try and restrain the last goose.

"Wingardium Leviosa" Ming cast confidently. And it was a perfectly cast spell. Only, it was poorly aimed and hit nothing. Worse, it seemed to draw the attention and the ire of the goose that had until then been satisfied to harrass Scheider. The foul fowl squawked at him, before making a beeline directly for him.

In panic - he did not much fancy being waylaid the way Hildegard had been - Ming tried to cast again; and again his spell was poorly aimed. With mounting trepidation, the boy attempted the Levitation charm a third time; but by the time he had completed his wand movement, the goose was upon him and he started backward, throwing off his aim yet again.

"Bloody bird!" he exclaimed in frustration, startling back as the bird continued its relentless pursuit and endless pecks upon his wand arm. Ming staggered backwards, before losing his balance and falling over, with the goose towering over him like an evil feathered fiend.

Well, this won't end well. His mind supplied to him helpfully.

-Oh shut up ! She replied harshly to Liana while pointing her wand on her, taking her frustration on the redhead.

This fight with geese really tired Hildegard, she just wanted to incendio all of them and leave but of course people would get mad at her for cooking a few birds.
She had her revenge anyway so she decided to leave and wait for them to finish and finally see Mudcreep get proven wrong by a teacher.
She walked pass all the goose who either ignored her or were too scared by her previous deed to attack her.
She smirked at them proud of what she had accomplish. As she walked she was pretty glad she was disable as the damage the goose had done to her would clearly have been noticeable if she walked properly.

-These stupid geese better bite their butts too ! She hopped

After all that Hildegard knew what she'd eat for lunch, some nice roasted duck, it was today's mandatory's lunch. Like she ate squids on her first day because of the lake incident. She went far enough to be out of reach but close enough to be a spectator, watching them battle the evil geese.

Liana seemed to share his sentiment as the flaming goose caught her eye. He was amused for a split second at her public display of pure horror at the psychotic Schneider's antics. So, the girl had emotions after all!

That darn goose just refused to stay still. But then again, would anybody stop running around frantically if their behind was on fire? It ran willy-nilly and Avery knew that he wasn't going to catch it. If anything, he was angering the remaining geese with his large movements. One pecked him in the arm, and he yelled in pain. He really needed a little help.

It was fortunate that the older student showed up when she did, and she immediately took breast of the situation with a commandeering presence that a prefect such as Santario would have. The fire was extinguished mid-chase, and Avery finally stopped to take a breather and re-don his robe. The chaos of today had been a little much; the day had hardly begun and he had already broken his body with Flash during their morning workout, and had been trampled by geese before the afternoon barely started. "Thank you, Santario," he said, not really caring if she heard him or not during the commotion.

He shook off his screaming muscles and surveyed the action that was left. Some of the geese transformed back into furniture. Hildegard was nowhere obvious to be seen, probably satisfied by the fact that she had roasted at least one goose and likely disappointed that a prefect showed up before she could roast more. He watched with trepidation as Ming's levitating charm missed completely, and the irritated goose proceeded to squawk at him horrifyingly. His best friend could only scramble backwards but fail another two times... he had to do something!

Avery whipped out his wand with renewed vigor, arms no longer consciously aching. He wasn't quite so talented at spellwork, but there was one useful spell that he knew. He collected himself and took aim. "Tarantallegra!" he incantated, and watched with amazement as the spell shot out of his wand and took hit. Immediately, the goose began to dance, looking a lot less terrible than it was a second ago. "Yes! I did it!" he pumped his fist into the air, with half a mind to strike a pose as Hildegard had done a second ago. It was his first successful spell out of class and it felt darn heroic.

He rushed over to his fallen friend, leaving the untransfiguration work to be done by someone with better ability, and offered the boy a hand. "You okay?" he asked Ming. "Those birds are such monsters!" He brushed off a feather that stuck to Ming's shirt during the scuffle, hoping his friend wasn't too traumatized by the events of today or flustered by his fall.

Screaming and chaos often went hand in hand with first years, especially when an older classman fumbled something. At least San still assumed this mess was caused by a more senior classman as she had not come to know Professor Wade as the type of man to allow his furniture to cause havoc like this. However, just as all storms rolled in, this too would pass, even if it required a little help.

“You are most welcome” A quick response to those who had thanked her for coming in to help, but it would not escape her attention that one of them had detached from the situation instead of continuing to help what Santario presumed were her friends. It showed unsportsmanlike tendencies and made them appear as if their teamwork skills needed work. It was mentally noted for if the first year ever came up in the duelling roster. It is not a type of attitude any of the three captains would abide by.

While Ming tried to levitate a goose, though unsuccessfully, he still cast brilliantly. Liana successfully untransfigured more of them, leaving just the last one, which Avery sent into a fury of goose tap dancing and butt wiggles. Santario turned to address the three that stayed to handle the situation. “Good job, guys, only one left and he will have a harder time actually biting you. It is hard to hit when you cannot control your body, so great choice in the spell.” Santario looked over at Ming specifically now. “You may not have hit, but your casting was brilliant. Keep up the practice. You all have potential.” They didn’t need her help anymore, not really, they had the rest of this handled, and she believed they were more than competent for the task at hand.

“One last thing before I go.” She would turn to them each in kind and cast reparifors whether they looked damaged or not. “Better to be safe than sorry. Then you will not have to explain to Monsieur Brumby about the geese, and I do not start my shift in there until after lunch. If you find out who is responsible, let me know, I will make sure you get some form of compensation for dealing with this mess.” She was sure whoever it was had fled the scene of the crime, and if she were to be in the hospital wing for the rest of the day, she needed to eat, even if she didn’t plan on eating a lot the food served by Hogwarts.

“Good luck. You know where to find me if you need me.” With a slight smile Santario stowed her wand away and tucked her hands into the pockets of her leather jacket, and continued on down the hall in the direction that would take her back downstairs.
Santario leaves topic unless asked to stay.

"Because she's a problem, that's why."

Ming's words made the redhead flinch internally. Had she just openly opposed a pureblood girl and sided with a Muggleborn? That was utterly inappropriate. She should have thought before scolding Hildegard so vocally, and she should not have done that in front of a rival of the dark-haired girl. Oh, this was such a blunder. And for all her flaws, Hilda was still the closest person to a friend Liana had among pureblood students. Feeling a need to remedy the situation and distance herself from an undesirable alliance, she turned to the boy, opening her mouth to say something in the black-haired girl's defense, not quite sure yet what that would be. But before she could get a single sound out, Schneider snapped at her.

''She sure is,'' was what finally came out of Liana's mouth, a low dissatisfied whisper that only one standing right next to her could pick up on. Instantly there was a pang of a guilt-like emotion; not about badmouthing Hildegard - anyone who was this uncouth towards a Kerr deserved to be criticized and stripped of 'ally' status - but about speaking negatively of one who, blood-wise, was above Liana's own station, to someone who was inordinately below either of the girls' station. It was... unsavoury. But her momentary anger got the best of her and now Liana found herself switching camp. She watched their Germanic classmate stomp off, making a mental note to never trust her in any mildly dangerous situation. Better stick with Muggleborns that can watch her back than be abandoned by a volatile pureblood. At least Ming had stood by her side, missed relatively few spells and successfully defended her from a ferocious fowl. He could be an ally when there was no alternative.

Or could he? Liana couldn't quite believe her eyes when all three of the boy's attempts at Levitating the final avian missed the target completely. All she could do was spectate helplessly, as Ming's back was denying her a clear shot of the goose. The redhead tried to circle him to obtain a more suitable angle for aiming, but the boy and the bird were moving too much, and she didn't want to risk blasting her saviour into a wall with a hurried attempt to return the favour. Luckily, Avery either had a better shot, or was just more gutsy about misfiring his spell. Either way, he succeeded in disabling the animal, and the redhead relaxed enough to notice that she had been holding her breath, which she now released in a great whoosh.

''Nice one, Avery, that was some quick thinking.'' That was a genuine praise, too. Once again she found herself doubting whether Chen was truly a Muggleborn. How could he be, when he had such a pleasant way of communication, a talent for broom flying, and, as it turns out, great spell-casting skills?

''I hope you're alright?'' she inquired of the bespectacled boy, feeling sincerely bad about having been unable to assist him. ''I- I'm sorry, there wasn't a clear shot for me, and I didn't want to risk hitting you with a wayward spell.'' The excuse was quite superfluous, but the girl felt like she needed to explain why she had not come to his rescue while he had saved her not a few minutes ago.

As Santario delivered her remarks on their teamwork and even claimed that they had potential - potential for joining the duelling team, perhaps? - Liana could barely hold back a proud smile. Yes, she felt that she had done good, despite quite a few spells missing or not working exactly as desired. After all, she had successfully untransfigured four geese already, in a stressful situation; knowing how complex an art Transfiguration was, this was quite an achievement.

''Thank you so much for helping us sort this chaos out,'' she piped up while the Prefect was Healing the three of them. Now they could easily deal with the last of the vicious birds and continue their quest for truth about Devil's Snare. As Santario walked away, Liana took a moment to aim at the tapdancing fowl. She'd make short work of it.

''Reparifarge!'' the girl incanted, and, with a blinding flash, was blasted backward into one of the tables that Ming had lowered to the floor. The force of the backfired spell actually threw the poor Slytherin so hard that her momentum made the table topple over. After the dizzying motion ceased and blinding pain subsided somewhat, Liana found herself sprawled on the ground, next to the piece of furniture collision with which had caused her right side and her back to feel numb with pain. First thing the girl did when she felt she could move again was glance in the direction the third-year had gone, to make sure she didn't witness this utter fiasco. Luckily, Santario was no longer in sight. What a relief. ''I'm alright,'' she announced to the two boys, clutching her side as she struggled to her feet. ''Need to practice my Transfiguration more, that's all,'' the girl added in what she hoped was a nonchalant way. She took a deep breath, which hurt her waist area and made it exceedingly difficult not to flinch. However, the redhead did her best to use the pain as an energizer and not let it overwhelm her.

''Reparifarge!'' she cast again when she felt sufficiently composed. The dancing poultry started transforming into a yet another chair. Started... but did not finish. Like in one of the previous attempts, the chair was adorned with a pair of wings, as well as a pair of two flat orange feet jutting from the seat, flapping helplessly in the air with a continued attempt to dance. ''That's... not quite right,'' Liana observed, feeling suddenly abashed. She would seriously need to practice this branch of magic more to reduce her failure rate. This whole ordeal had opened her eyes about how helpless she still was in situations that required magical combat skills. ''Okay, well. Let me just... Reparifarge!''

This time, the mutant creature went back to its fully-inanimate state as a regular classroom chair. The girl sighed in relief, lowering her wand but not yet quite daring to pocket it in case more of these feathery hell-raisers showed up.

''So, can we now go to Professor Irons? I'd like to get it over with and take the rest of the day off,'' the girl suggested while hastily combing her hair with fingers and removing any stray feathers that may have gotten entangled there. Her robe needed some straightening, too, and her whole body could have used another Reparifors or two. There was a budding temptation to just drop the disagreement about the magical plant that wasn't even part of their curriculum yet, and just retire to her dorms for recovery. It could have made it look like she doubted her own viewpoint, however, and so she ignored the urge. ''Shall we?'' Liana raised her eyebrows, starting to move towards the Herbology Professor's office again.
