A theory I read once- which I really like and find logical btw- is that the sorting hat sorts people not after the most dominant personality traits they possess but the ones they value the most. Take Neville for example- He was not a brave kid at the beginning of year one but he really wanted to and faced the trio when they wanted to sneak out.
Or Malfoy who really wants to prove himself, which I find is extremely visible in year 6, where he refuses Snape's help because 'it's his moment' but in the end he can't fulfill the task.
Or Hermione. So many people say she should have been in Ravenclaw but in year one she literally puts bravery over books and cleverness.
