Henry listened to Rose recall he captains, the first thought that would form in his mind was when he defeated AJ in the first stage of duels that year. It was a bit strange how Henry faced captains each stage of duels that year and won two, well two the teen he won one and failed at two.
"I met Alan a few times, he alright and I never met Meenauh. I watched Beckett attack Scarlett in the hall in a few months ago so not the best idea to allow her to hex others legally now," Henry replied finding it strange how different their captains were, she had four and Henry only three as he took a breath then continued" I dueled AJ in the first stage of duels with Ama- my partner and won," Henry moved his blue eyes away from Rose and toward the training dummy. It was been a while since he thought of Amara. It felt like a lifetime since they last met. Since they last spoke.
Henry listened to Rose talk about his captains, the teen could only nod to her when she talked about Bridget. Henry didn't know the co captain to well besides from practices so he could object or agree with Rose about her. Waiting till Rose finished, Henry smiled toward her looking at her eyes as he spoke" I don't really know Bridget that well beside practices. Dmitri is a good captain a bit obsessed with winning but good and Santario is one of the best captains probably at the school so," was Henry biased over the co captain? Yes, yes he was. If it was Santario who Rose didn't get along with then there would be a few problems but luckily it wasn't.
Henry practiced his stance and casting without spells once or twice until he heard Rose's words. Stopping and looking as the girl as he thought.
Did he want to be a dueling captain? Henry wasn't sure if he could manage being a captain and helping the others on the team or help with cratering strategies. Henry wasn't confident in his abilities already so the idea of being a captain seemed more anxiety ridden and nerve wracking for the young teen.
"I'm not sure, would you like to be captain," Henry replied with a smile toward Rose. Directing the question toward her was the best he could manage since he wasn't sure if he would make a good captain or would be able to manage being captain of the Viridian Vipers.
Rose was describing the kid who gave Henry full details of the duels and his own one when he was unconscious, it was informative but also humiliating especially when he heard about his own duels. The first of his team to be knocked unconscious, twice. They only were failures in Henry's eyes even his first duel, now looking back all the teen could see his mistakes and failures.
"Yeah sounds like him, he would make a good quidditch commentator," Henry replied a part of his not really feeling up to conversion. His mind was circling thoughts around and his anxiety attacking himself from the inside, at the current moment the only thing the teen wanted to do was run and hide but he didn't. He remained where he was. Silent. Emotionless.
Henry nodded toward Rose with a soft smile when she mentioned the advice actually helped her, a part of her felt good that he helped a friend while another part of him felt worse. Like he distracted her and ruined her spell techniques, like he was a bother.
It seemed Rose was similar to him again. Pointing out her own flaws but trying to work on the bright side and compliment his own spell and aim. Henry only smiled toward the red and nodded, there wasn't a point to contrast her statements especially if they would only go back and fourth with one another. Sometimes the best things to do is to remain quiet. After all he may not always speak but that's because his mind is screaming.
Henry watched Rose sent a curse of the bogies charm at the training dummy and nod to it as he gave her a soft smile and spoke" good aim," the teen then took aim, took a breath then softly spoke" Cantis," no use yelling a spell, it was more unexpected when someone whispered their spells rather then shout them.
The spell hit the neck of the training dummy and Henry nodded toward it, the affects would take place on it for obvious reasons.
Henry turned to Rose with a soft smile as he spoke"try whispering your spells, shouting them just informs your opponents what you'll do but you don't have to follow that," Henry felt his anxiety itching at the back of his neck as he fiddled with his wand in his hands. Taking breaths to calm himself and remain emotionless.
Henry listened to Rose, nodding to the girl until she was finished. When she was, Henry offered a soft smile as he spoke" a practice duel sounds good but what if we stop after one or both of us no loner can handle it or taps out? We also shouldn't use the curse of the bogies or any incendio spells for obvious reasons," Henry would wait for Rose to agree or suggest another way for their practice duel to go. The teen didn't want to hurt Rose but he also wanted to learn.
"Good luck and don't go easy on me, Rose," Henry spoke and ran to the opposite end of the room. Moving the training dummy to the side then taking his spot, be would bow toward Rose then wand at his side. Taking his stance.
Wand in front, loose but also a little tight. Knees slightly bent and mind focus. Henry waited till Rose was ready then would cast.

Looking back on the year
Rose nodded at his answer about her captains, then added, "Oh, Beckett's not a duelist. She's just a captain. She's not leaving her precious Quidditch." Now hearing that Henry had seen Anastasia attack Scarlett reassured Rose that she could talk about the girl negatively without feeling guilty. Henry, being as loyal as he was, would never ever side with somebody who hurt his friend, especially if it was intentional. Rose hadn't been there, but she had heard rumors around the school about Anastasia trying to claw Scarlett's eyes out, and it had just made her hate the third year even more. Of course, Rose was sure that Scarlett had probably punched her back or something, in which case she would have applauded her redheaded friend. Maybe. Violence was bad, obviously. But Anastasia was just so hard to not punch in the face, and sometimes she deserved it. A lot of the time, she deserved it.
Henry seemed to correct himself a little when he came to his dueling partner's name. Rose couldn't remember if they had talked about them or not (they talked a lot), but he didn't seem to want to say their name, just "my partner." Rose nodded again as he told her about his own relationships with his captains. It was good that he had one captain that he did really like. "That's good," she said.
"Mmmm, probably not," she said, honestly. "Maybe sometime in the future. But I would want to be more comfortable in dueling before I'm allowed to tell other people how to duel. I don't really want to right now, but maybe in a year or something I will." Her answer was a little more complex. "I think you would be good at captain-ing," she said, crossing her feet from where she sat and bouncing them a little, her hands under her knees. She smiled. Captain-ing is not a word, but Rose didn't really care in this instance. Henry was going to have to put up with her spontaneous word creating, and he had done an excellent job so far.
He sent another spell towards the dummy, this time the one Rose recognized as the singing jinx. He had said it softly, but she had just managed to make it out.
"I wasn't shouting them," Rose said, wondering if he thought that she had. She tried to remember if she had. She hadn't been loud about it, it had just been in her normal voice, in a firm tone. "I was just saying them. But thanks, I will keep that in mind," she said, with a smile in his direction. "I'll take any advice I can, at this point."
Henry was so much smarter than her. He knew Third Year spells that Rose was too pathetic to try to attempt. His Wind Jinx had split. He had actually won a duel. She was probably just dragging him down by being here. She was probably just being a weight, being a burden. He was kind to give her advice, though. He always seemed to have something to say after she cast a spell, always a good piece of advice she soaked up gratefully. He was so much smarter than her. He was so much better than her. What was she even doing, trying to compete with him?
Henry accepted her suggestion of a practice duel, but instead suggested that they do an actual duel, until one of them forfeited. Rose smiled and nodded. She put the dummy down on the floor, and took its spot on the other side of the dueling stage. Rose angled her body a little towards her right hand, holding her wand out in front of her. She spread her feet apart a good distance, angling them the way she had figured out had given her the most balance. She used a grip on her wand that wasn't overly firm, but wasn't overly loose either. Her mind seemed to fill with all the techniques, all the advice, all that she had read and practiced, and they hadn't even started yet. With one sweep of her mind, Rose centered it in the right place, leaving all the bustling activity in the back.
She was going to try to beat Henry. Henry was her friend, and she wasn't going to actually hurt him. But she needed a win, even if it wasn't a real one.
She nodded at Henry, telling him that she was ready.
Rose Moon had a terrible feeling that Henry, her friend, her soon-to-be stepbrother, her classmate, fellow duelist, and piano mentor, was about to kick her butt.

"Good Luck!"
Henry smiled toward Rose. This was a practice duel. A way for them both to get better and learn from their own mistakes while also learning new techniques and even strategies that he could bring back to their team.
Henry Knight was loyal to a fault for his friends; Rose, Logan, Cash, Paige, Scarlett, and the other's. He would do anything for them and go through thick or thin for them. His friends were like family in his mind. He is loyal to them. Always.
But the young teen is also a Viridian Viper. A member of the slytherin dueling team that won the championship that year and would need to defend the title next year so when it came to dueling he was focused on the match and winning. There wasn't another option if your a Viper, you had to win. Winning was the only way.
So if the young teen could get strategy or techniques from another team and bring it to his captains, would he? Would he take what Rose does that practice and apply it to future strategies against gryffindor? It was wrong but also in dueling wasn't a fight, it was a sport like quidditch so maybe it wasn't? His Loyalty to his friends and loyalty to his team battled within his mind.
That is for another time. Now it's time for dueling. A practice match to learn from mistakes and new strategies or techniques.
Henry stood, one foot bit behind the other. Knees slightly bent. Eyes straight forward, watching Rose's green eyes. Wand held tightly but lose a tad loose in his left hand. Mind focused on what spells he will use and what possible spells Rose, his practice opponent would use.
The voice within his mind circling around, remaining his of thoughts and situations that he didn't want to hear. To listen to.
The barrier in place hiding away all of his emotions, the small smile still present on his face unlike a proper duel since this wasn't a proper one right? Then why did the young teen still want to win?
Henry stared at Rose. Friend agaisnt Friend. Gryffindor against Slytherin. Duelist against Duelist. Viridian Viper against Pride Of Pendast. Classmate against Classmate. Bookworm against Bookworm. Animal Lover aginest Animal Lover. Future Step Brother aginest Future Step Sister.
Mind focused on the duel
Henry was ready
A breath
And then...
"Cantis." Henry whispered so quietly, barely audible as his words and movements smooth and quick. Similar to a snake striking down in a fight or a fox defending itself.
Henry watched his singing jinx fly toward Rose when he saw her own disarming charm come rushing toward him, a single step and the bot leaned to the opposite side avoiding it and keeping a grip on his wand. Ready for the next round of the practice duel. Mind focused on his next spell.

Rose forced a smile in Henry's direction, not really able to call anything back, a sinking feeling in her stomach. He had wished her luck twice. She probably needed it.
Her spell worked, going towards Henry, but was horribly aimed. Henry might not have even needed to dodge, it was so bad. But Henry's spell was aimed perfectly and came rushing at her before she could move. It wasn't long before she was singing.
"Theeeeeeeeeeeee wheels on the bus go round and round! Round and round! Round and round- the wheels on the bus go round and roouuuuuuuuuuuuund! All through the town!" she sang involuntarily, her mouth betraying her.
Frustration bubbled up inside of Rose. It had only been one round in, and she was already right- Henry was kicking her butt. And he would probably continue to kick her butt. Rose hadn't really ever wanted to do a practice duel in the first place, as it wouldn't be any different, in her mind, than a regular duel. She would do horribly, die inside, and that would be that.
Henry was so much better than her at all this. Rose didn't know why he was doubting himself so much. He was so obviously good at this. She didn't know why he even tried to reassure her that she was a good duelist. She wasn't. She never was. She barely ever hit her opponents, and was, most of the time, the first one knocked out. Her opponents were able to walk out untouched, thinking about how easy that had been. She wasn't a lion. She wasn't even a lion cub. She was just a pathetic little girl trying to be something she wasn't.
A duelist.
Why did he keep lying to her, telling her she was any good? He wasn't going to convince her against the truth. And the truth was that she was horrible at this. Her entire dueling record was failure after failure after failure. People next year who would go up against her would take one glance at her record and decide that they didn't really need any preparing. They barely even needed to try.
Why did she even try?
Because she was Rose. And even when things looked bad, she was too stubborn and stupid to give up.
Rose leveled her wand at Henry again, still loudly singing the "Wheels on the Bus" and said, "Tarantallegra," as quietly as she could in between her singing, her wand movement precise and focused.

The teen knew the singing jinx was successful when he heard Rose suddenly break out in song, it wasn't one that he recognized but it was still rather funny to listen to the girl uncontrollably sing.
"Your voice is lovely to listen to," Henry commented on the girl's singing voice and was caught of guard when she managed to sneak a spell in the midst of her singing and her spell even with the the theme of spells... the dancing feet charm.
lovely
The spell barley hit the teen as he leaned to the side, it stilled manged to hit him in the side and nearly in a instant he begun a odd dance with his legs far from the beat and tempo to the song Rose was singing.
His legs were moving and jerking in ways that he couldn't control as he took a breath and took as much control as he could muster to cast his next spell as he whispered and pointed a shaky wand toward Rose as his legs twitched and jerks in different directions, the young teen whispered"Slugulus Eructo," watching as the spell sailed from his wand and successfully hit its target.
The teen felt bad for casting the slug vomiting spell at Rose but it could be payback for forcing him to dance.... still he felt bad even through he never experienced the effects himself, not yet at least. The teen still felt bad and would be inclined to cast Finite Incantatem to put a end to the disgusting spell.
"I'm sorry!" Henry cried out as he was swung around from his legs, bending and turning to a imaginary beat that wasn't found anywhere near the dueling room... when will this spell end and relieve Henry of this torture...

Rose tried to shout a thank you back to Henry. "ThaaAAAAANkk youuuu," she replied, singing like somebody in an opera. It wasn't perfect, let's just say that. After her very loud thank you, her singing stopped, and she sighed, relieved, only to be hit by another one of Henry's spells. She bent over a little bit as slugs involuntarily erupted from her mouth. "Yuck," she whispered, wiping her mouth. She straightened up and pointed her wand at Henry, planning her next spell.
"It's okay!" she shouted, before another slug came up. She didn't understand exactly why this spell had to exist. It sucked. Little flashes, little clips of her own duels, Eyre vomiting slugs, Rose vomiting slugs, little whispers to each other that they could still do this. But they couldn't. They hadn't. They had failed so miserably. A memory of her curled up in her hospital bed, wanting to scream, wanting to cry, wanting to make the pain in her heart and the anger at herself stop. Henry might have thought he was a failure, but he was just anxious. At least he had won a duel. Rose was an actual failure. She had tried and tried and could not stop failing.
Why wasn't she good at anything? The first time she had tried Quidditch, she had also lost and done barely anything for her team. She couldn't just have some thing, one thing that she was good at, that she took pride in? She just had to fail at everything.
Rose saw Henry start dancing as her spell hit him. One spell wasn't enough. Henry had hit her with two spells now, so she still wasn't as good as he was. She still wasn't enough. She had to win this.
Rose shook her head violently to expel the memories, casting another spell towards Henry. "Obscuro," she said quietly. The last time she had cast this spell it had backfired in her face, she remembered, with a twist of her gut. But this was no time for flashbacks.

Slug Vomiting Charms effects countered
Henry watched as Rose vomited up disgusting, slimy slugs. The young teen had no idea that the spell was cast at her before or had a profound impact on her because if he did then he would never have cast it.
The teen couldn't handle watching the scene anymore and decided it put a end to it as he pointed his wand at her and softly spoke" Finite Incantatem," watching as sparks few from his wand to Rose. The spell should bring a end to the slug vomiting and the teen was taking a mental note to be careful using that spell even during a offical duel.
"Are you alright?" Henry called out as he looked over at his future stepsister with concern and would wait for a response till continuing their practice duel.
Even though he was doing reasonably well, Henry couldn't escape from the scenes circling around his mind. From the memories that were so crystal clear within his mind's eye and that familiar little voice. He was worried. While he was doing well at that practice that didn't mean he would do well at next year's duels. His spells could backfire or miss or he could be the first unconscious.
The teen was worried. Anxious. Nervous. He wanted to improve in dueling next year but wasn't sure if he could.... or if he'll fail again.
"Spongify," Henry spoke softly curious what the softening charm would do not expecting it to do much damage that is if it even hit. He was doubting himself. Henry still wanted to leave, to go. He stilled believed that he was wasting Rose's time and that she deserved a better partner than him.
Henry felt his mind circle around him, his emotions were hidden but his thoughts allowed him to be caught off guard by Rose's blindfolding charm.
A blindfold wrapped tightly around Henry's eyes.
A familiar feeling. Sensation. This was the moment in the second stage duels, his first duel with Astrea where his luck turned on him.
The moment Astrea's spellspread backft8ed causing him and the ravenclaw boy; Pericles to be blindfolded. The moment and what happened after was the reason they lost... everything went down after that...
Henry reached for the knot of the blindfold to untie it but also had a unsettling feeling looming in.

Henry spared her from her sluggy curse, casting the general counter-curse on her with ease. In the lull of the duel, she wiped her mouth with her sleeve and stepped over the slugs, leaving a good three feet between her and them and knowing she would end up slipping on them or something. She raised a hand, giving him a thumbs up. She squared up with him once more, giving him a nod. "Ready!" she shouted across the room.
Spells flew again. She saw her spell hit him and a blindfold wrap around his eyes. For a moment, a small moment, she had leveled the playing field, bringing them both to two successful spells. Then her chest seemed to turn to... jelly, right as his own spell hit her. Three to two. She still wasn't good enough. She stumbled back a few steps, a strange sensation in her torso and her mind telling her of a sharp feeling of pain, though she didn't know where. She was still able to move her arms, however. And if she could move her arms, she could still duel on. She pointed her wand at Henry, leveling her gaze at him.
"Flipendo," she whispered, the spell barely audible.
Henry was in a lot better shape than Rose was, at this moment. Unless her Flipendo was incredibly powerful for whatever reason, Rose was pretty much doomed to a butt kicking. Henry had stopped dancing and only had a blindfold around his eyes. She felt a prick of jealousy. Why did Henry have to be so good at this? Why couldn't she win anything?

Darkness enclosed around him. The feeling of emptiness and loneliness spiraled around his mind as he stood still for a moment looking into the darkness of the blindfold taking slow breaths to ensure he didn't panic.
The last time he was blindfolded in a duel was when his partner; Astrea spell seemed to target both him and the ravenclaw boy instead of bohr ravenclaw's. The memory of his words to her still fresh in his mind, how he compared her to Amara. The thought beat within him and crawled up his throat as he swallowed hard forcibly keeping his emotions hidden.
The teen reach behind his head and pulled at the knot, untying it carefully as the darkness faded and the blindfold fell to the ground restoring his sight.
However he didn't have enough time to dodge Rose's incoming flipendo and felt the spell hit him, knocking him through the air and landing on his back. Looking at the ceiling he remembered how weak Rose looked now and how much in pain he was, coming up with a idea as he rushed to his feet and pointed his wand at Rose ready to continue but this time with a plan.
A plan that would safe them both from dueling anymore and bring a end to this duel, the teen didn't want to hurt his future stepsister and didn't want to get hurt anymore as his back ached firm the recent knockback jinx but he also didn't want to surrender so instead he had a plan to end that duel.

Her spell hit him, finally evening the score. He yanked off his blindfold, and she sent the Knockback Jinx at him. It hit him, and Rose lifted her chin, biting down hard to stop herself from rushing over to him to see if he was okay, or shouting down to him to ask him. He was okay, and she stopped herself from casting another spell at him while he was down on the ground, giving him a moment to regather his bearings, as he had done for her earlier. In this moment, she lowered her wand, pointing it at the ground instead of at him, a nonverbal sign that she was going to give him the time to get to his feet and square up again before she cast another spell at him. She took this moment to strategize. Once he stood up and seemed to be on steady feet, she pointed her wand at him once more. In actual dueling, Rose liked to think she wouldn't give her opponents this time if they were in the same position, as nobody had done for her. But maybe she would have.
She leveled her wand at him again and cast another spell. "Mimblewimble," she said quietly.
Rose didn't wanna do this anymore. She didn't know why, but she felt like it was approaching the point where one of them would have to admit they couldn't go anymore. Though Rose wanted to win, she really wanted Henry to be okay. She was on the verge of yelling across the stage to forfeit, or purposefully missing spells and letting his hit her.
Her pride wouldn't let her do that, however. She would push through.
