It was a great sunny day so after classes Nicky went to the lake to study as she often did. She didn't want to go to the library this early in the day, the weather was way too good for that. She hurried to the shore and made herself a cosy study space on the grass. It was a peaceful place to read about Herbology at, with small waves crashing against the sand and the warm wind blowing in her cheek.
She was so absorbed by the words in the book that she didn't hear the sound of branches cracking behind the tree nearby.
So when she raised her head from the paper to rest her eyes and saw the bear she was so startled that she knocked over the ink and it spilled on her essay.
She sighed because now she had to do it all over again but at the same time she was so excited that she forgot about it almost instantly. She had never seen a bear this close and it looked so big and cute!
So Nicky got up from the grass and extended her hand to the animal
"Hello Mr Bear, or is it Mrs Bear? I am so excited to meet you! Or, I forgot that bears don't do handshakes!"
She put her hand away.
"You are still so fluffy and extremely cute though! Are you a magical bear or a regular bear? Are you hungry? I think I have a leftover muffin in my bag".
Nicky rummaged through her things and took out a wrapped up strawberry muffin she had saved from breakfast. She put it on the ground in front of the huge animal and smiled.
"Here you go, I hope you like muffins. I read that bears eat just about anything. Bon appetit! That's French, by the way, but I don't speak French, I just know a few phrases. I am much better at Spanish because my mom taught me Spanish and a few other languages, she is a translator and she says it is the best job ever because she can make a connection with just about anyone and help people connect with each other! She is amazing, I think she would love to meet you, she is always excited to make new friends, I think I get it from her. I really want to be just as amazing as her when I grow up".
The girl paused to take a breath and rattled on.
"What about your mom, is she a bear too? It is so cool, I mean bears are so fluffy and cuddly when they are not angry, and you don't look angry, can I stroke you, your fur looks amazing".
Nicky made a couple of careful steps and gently scratched the bear behind ears.
"Wow, you're even softer than I imagined, this is so awesome, you are the best bear I ever met! Would you like to hang out again sometime? We could talk and eat muffins or whatever else you like, I could save some meatballs for you next time, they are delicious too!"
