It was a beautiful March day, the sun peeking through the clouds and kissing Haley's freckles as she walked through the big door. She wasn't the only one spending the day outside today and when she couldn't find a free spot in the Courtyard, she decided to go down to the lake, there was plenty of space and she could enjoy spring to the fullest.

She still had an essay to write and had decided against the library today and had packed her books into her backpack, which she carried over one shoulder. It swayed slightly with her quick walk and her eyes scanned the meadow looking for a suitable spot. From a distance she could make out a head of hair like hers and a small smile formed on her lips. This hair was a rarity and it was always strange to meet someone who was also blessed with it.

However, her smile quickly disappeared again, was the girl crying? She held her hands around her knees and it looked like her body was shaking from sobbing. Surely she was crying and Haley was already on her way. Sadness spread through her body, as always her compassionate side came out.

She was now standing behind the girl, unsure what to do. She did not want to disturb her, but no one should sit here alone in sadness. She gathered her courage and placed her hand lightly on her shoulder, "Heey." She spoke softly in a soothing voice. She walked around her now and sat on the floor next to her as she looked at the girl compassionately. Not only was their hair a commonality, but her teary green eyes reminded Haley of her own. They both had fair skin and freckles, though Haley was probably speckled with more than the girl sitting there in front of her.

Haley didn't want to ask if she was okay, after all, it was obvious she was anything but. She gave her a gentle smile, she wanted to show her that she wasn't alone, even if they didn't know each other. Haley was here. "I'm Haley," she introduced herself first, "Is there anything I can do for you?" she continued.

[font=book antique]- Heey. The girl who approached put her hand on Lily's shoulder. A sympathetic gesture. Almost brotherly. The Ravenclaw looked up. At first she thinks she is in front of a mirror. Same red hair, same green eyes... But she is dressed in red. A Gryffindor. Lily hesitates between turning her back and answering her. The doubt is not there for long. The girl looks so friendly and kind... - Hi. - I'm Haley, is there anything I can do for you? She does not know. Lily doesn't know. What to do to make her more sociable? To take away her shyness? All she wants is at least one really good friend. Lily wipes her eyes. She looks at Haley and says in a trembling voice: - I'm Lily. I don't really know if you can do anything for me. Do you know a spell that takes away shyness? Get off to a good start. That's what she told herself. The two girls look alike physically. Maybe they'll become friends? At least, that's what Lily hopes. She has a tiny smile as she asks her question. In reality, Lily is not really shy. The proof is that she talks to Haley. It's just that between the first day of school and today, she preferred to be alone. But since that letter... She feels the need to have friends. If one of her old friends was at Hogwarts, she would be really, really happy.[/font]

Haley laughed and looked at the girl with some pity in her eyes. "I don't think we need a spell for that." Answered Haley and winked at her. She doesn't know what had happened but Lily is sad and it made Haley sad when others were sad. It was like an endless loop, so she had to do something about it. "It's nice to meet you, you're a first year too, right?" Haley couldn't remember seeing her in class but often blanked out her surroundings around her once she was focused on something so it's no surprising.

Haley could ask the girl why she was crying, but that would only bring out the sadness again, so she tried another tactic - distraction. Her eyes now turned to the lake, to the smooth and reflective surface, and she remembered back to a day early in her time at Hogwarts. "I don't know if you've heard about it, but rumor has it that there's a giant Squid living in the great lake." She nodded her head towards the water before continuing, "I don't know if it's true and I don't think it's ever been officially sighted either but a bit of mystery is part of the charm isn't it?" she started to giggle but came back to the actual story she wanted to tell. "I used to sit here with a friend, she's sadly no longer here but I liked her a lot. Anyway, we named the still unknown giant squid Herman. And I think the name makes him less scary right away." Haley knew it was silly, but it was still a nice memory.

As she recounted the experience, she thought back to her time with Alina. They didn't have much time together, yet it had been a good friend of hers and she missed her. Somehow it was nostalgic but she liked the little moments when she was mentally with her friend and hoped she was doing well.

She looked back at Lily now, hoping that at least for a moment she could forget what had made her so sad. She hoped to see that her tears had dried and perhaps even a small smile had formed on her lips.

[font=book antique]You shake your head to say no, then to say yes to both of Haley's questions. No, we don't need a spell, but you'd like one anyway, and yes, you're a first year. You don't think you've seen it before, but you weren't really paying attention to the others in class. It was you, your stuff, and the professor. You look out over the lake and try to forget about your letter, listening to Haley tell you about the squid that lives in the lake. You nod in agreement to her question. You've always loved mysteries. But when she tells you that she and a friend have - Wait a minute. What? You named the giant squid Herman? Sure it's less creepy, but Herman? Only Garry could be worse as a nickname! With a smile on your face, you try desperately not to laugh. Herman. If Haley wanted to make you forget your sadness, she did. With your head turned towards her, you look more closely at your look-alike. From afar, you're sure people think you're sisters. Even if the letter is no longer a cause for crying, it is still there. Your smile diminishes as you grab the letter to show it to Haley. You deserve it, you know. You never listen to me, so of course you end up sad. Ignoring the voice and lowering your eyes, you explain the reason for your tears to Haley. - I guess you want to know why I was crying. Even though Herman's little story made me feel better. In fact, before today, I never realised how much I missed my Muggle friends. Apart from them, I don't have any friends here. And as it' s my birthday today, this is the letter I got from them.[/font]

Haley nodded with a laugh at her words. "Yup, Herman." Her gaze was still fixed on the calm water, maybe she would finally see a tentacle of Herman, but she didn't. Just like she always did. So she turned her gaze back to Lily. "No one said the name was good." She continued laughing and shook her head. "But yeah, definitely better than Garry." Lily, who resembled Haley so much, now resembled her more, for she had a smile on her lips. That only made Haley all the happier, but she quickly realised that the pain was really deep. Her eyes lowered, she could see the sadness coming back.

With a furrowed brow, she looked at the letter Lily showed her. There they had the culprit for the sadness and at the same time Lily explained what had happened. Haley looked at her apologetically, she knew how hard it could be to miss your friends or family. "I know it's hard." Haley said understandingly, "But you'll see them again, in the holidays for example. And you'll make friends here too." She tried to cheer the Ravenclaw girl up a bit and give her some optimus. "Besides, I have to correct you, you have me as a friend." Haley smiled at her now. It could happen SO fast and she was sure Lily would soon have more friends here at Hogwarts.

But not only did the girl feel alone, no it was even her birthday today. No one should cry on their birthday and so Haley wanted to think of something else to cheer the girl up a little. She looked around for a moment and spotted a stone on the shore of the lake. She stood up, picked up the stone, ploughed a beautiful flower, which made her heart ache a little, but it was for a good cause and Mother Nature would forgive her, she was sure. She dug a pen out of her pocket and scribbled something on the stone. She walked back over to Lily and sat down beside her, smiling.

"I know it's not much and nothing special, but I had to improvise." Haley giggled as she handed the stone and flower to Lily. On one side of the stone was the date and "Today I made friends with Haley Rose." Written and on the other side she had drawn a birthday cake. "Happy Birthday Lily!"

You'll see Eden, Chiara and the others over the holidays. You sigh to yourself that you could have spent Christmas with them. But you had chosen to stay. Maybe you'll visit them on Easter holiday? But friends here... Haley's nice. There's also the girl you met on the first day, on the train. So there are plenty of people here who could be friends with you. - Besides, I have to correct you, you have me as a friend. - Yeah, it's true! Even though you don't know her very well yet, you have the feeling that you don't only look alike. That you like the same things. Hey, you don't even know if she can be friends with you. You don't know if she is pure-blooded! That you can be friends with the same people. So it's true. Even though it's only been a few minutes since you met, you are friends. - I know it's not much and nothing special, but I had to improvise. Haley hands you a rock and a flower. On the stone, there is something written that almost makes you cry again. But this time with joy. It is, how can we say... A declaration of friendship. You smile as you hold the rock in your hand. You don't know if you can dare or if it's too early... - Happy Birthday Lily! With the stone still in your hand, you get up to give Haley a hug. She's the only person at Hogwarts who wished her a happy birthday! Well, she's also the only one who knows. But... She's also your first friend at Hogwarts. In the middle of second semester. - Thanks, Haley! Then you step aside to ask her when her birthday is.[/font]

Haley was more than sad that Lily was spending such a birthday here, but at the same time she was happy that she could at least put a little smile on her lips. "After every rain comes the sun." Babbled Haley, hoping Lily would understand what she was trying to tell her. As hard as her start here might have been, better times would come.

"My birthday is on the 11th of June." Haley answered her question. She had always been a pure summer child and luckily for her, she got to celebrate her birthday every year during her favourite season. It wouldn't be long before she would finally be another year older and as much as she was looking forward to it, she missed celebrating the day with her family.

"So it's getting late." Remarked the redheaded Gryffindor as she looked up at the sky. "What do you say we try to get you a little birthday dessert? I'm sure we could find one in the kitchen if we just asked nicely." she suggested, giggling as she stood up and held out her hand to Lily to pull her up from the floor.

The day was coming to an end, but they could still spend a little time together and Haley would be happy if she could at least give her new friend a little treat. Be it a small chocolate muffin or whatever Lily's heart desires.

[font=book antique]- After every rain comes the sun. After every rain comes the sun... That's true. Although, meteorologically speaking, you really like rain. And snow and cold and wind. You love it when the elements rage. And you don't know why. You smile when Haley gives you that quote. Do people really still know that one? - My birthday is on the 11th of June. The summer... It's not your favourite season at all, but that's okay. People often ask you why you don't like summer. Okay, you put out your best clothes but besides that? It's very hot, that often means parties until 2am... But there's also the pool, the sea and all that. But there's no sound of rain. Nor the long nights playing Monopoly, watching a film or reading in front of the fireplace with a hot chocolate. - Summer girl, right? I personally prefer winter. 12 years old... You are now 12 years old. It doesn't change much now. Now you just feel like you have a new friend. A friend who looks like you physically, and maybe mentally too. You don't know yet. With a smile on your face, you sit on the rock and watch the sun begin to set. It must be five o'clock. You realise that you still have homework to do for tomorrow. You will finish it tonight... - So it's getting late. What do you say we try to get you a little birthday dessert? I'm sure we could find one in the kitchen if we just asked nicely. Now that Haley was talking about food and cooking, you realized that you were hungry. Your friend reaches out to help you up and you think chocolate cake, no, lemon meringue pie would be great. You give Haley a big smile, take her hand and pretend to pull her back to the castle. - Sure! Do you like lemon meringue pie?[/font]

"Definitely a summer girl." Laughed Haley. Probably everything about her reminded her of summer, her freckles, her fiery red hair and her mood that was a thousand times better in summer than in winter. And while the two of them could have been siblings, Lily on the other hand was a winter person, "Well, I guess opposites attract." Haley winked at her, in a way it was still pleasant that the two had differences too.

As the two stood up and Haley packed everything up so they could walk to the castle together she laughed again. "Do I like it? I love it." She continued to laugh. "Ever tried Irishe traditions? If not, we need to make up for it real quick!" the young Gryffindor continued. Haley hadn't mentioned it, but most already inferred from her appearance that she was Irish and that's exactly what she was. While she now lived in London, she had been born and raised there, at least for the first five years and no matter how long she wasn't there, her heart would always beat for Ireland.

Haley waited until Lily was ready to leave and began to make her way comfortably to the castle. "If you like you can join me at the Gryffindor table and we can talk about good food for hours." Haley joked, but serious about her suggestion. She thought it was moronic for the Houses to separate students at such times and nowhere was it written that a Gryffindor could only sit at the Gryffindor table or a Ravenclaw only at the Ravenclaw table. Still, she would understand if Lily didn't want that, not everyone thought like Haley and that was okay with her.

Whatever her sisterly new friend decided, Haley was glad to have met her and hopefully halfway sweeten her birthday, even if it was all very spontaneous, with no real present but the stone at least prepared with much love.
