An apple a day. . . PV

Michael hummed as he made his way out of his dorm, doing up his tie as he walked through the near empty halls. He was humming a small tune that he couldn't fully remember as he made it down to the Great Hall. He wondered what he would do after the break was over. Maybe he and his new sibling would bond, even though he was only half a year old. He smiled as he made it to the room he was headed to, pushing the Great Hall doors open to get in. He looked over the hall, mostly full as it was lunch. He scanned over the Slytherin table, shivering slightly in unease when he saw Percival Rainwood, his hand subconsciously moving to feel over a part of his arm, though the scar there was mostly a memory. A memory of a punishment he did not believe he deserved. One he didn't need, yet will stay with him forever. He looked away quickly.

The boy looked down the rest of the table, tell he got to the end. One Dan Palmer was sitting there. He rememebered the boy as a nice one. He neither insulted, like a older Hufflepuff he knew, nor Scarred him like others had, so the boy was one of the nicer people he had met.

Michael smiled as he walked over, sitting across from the boy, and grabbing an apple from a ball of them. He looked over the other options, some seeming weridly out of place, like fries and chocolate, others seeming good for later, that of Chicken pot pie and Creme Brule. He twirled his apple, looking at it before gazing up at the other boy. "Hi Dan" he said, his voice breaking slightly from his nerves. What if Dan was just being nice that day? What if they weren't actually good? Not really. . friends or atleast friendly.

Michael looked back at his apple, taking a small bite, slurping slightly because it was so juicy. The apple was green and sour, his favourite. He liked the taste.

Michael took a deep breath before putting his Apple down, not wanting to get a stomach ache from eating too much too fast, as he had a small stomach. He had found that out his first week at Hogwarts.

Dan was, as was usual, having a lovely time eating in the Great Hall. Who else in the WORLD would let him eat American-Style fried chicken at any of the 3 daily meals?
Fine fine, he WAS supplementing it with fruit and veg, But the centerpiece was fried chicken. Dan LOVED it. He wanted to go to America one day to try more kinds; The only one he'd ever seen in Ireland was Kentucky Fried Chicken. And while that was AMAZING, he'd heard from Youtubers that something called Popeyes was also incredible. And something called Chik-Fil-A. It had sandwiches that everyone in America seemed to utterly bum off of. He wanted to try ALL the fried chicken!

Loki was sitting beside him, knowing to behave in the Great Hall during food times. Dan happily bequeathed the kitty mister with some smoked salmon from his plate, as there were plenty more.
Dan wasn't much of a breakfast food person, you may have noticed.

Dan himself was in a sweater, green and silver, naturally. Slightly longer than knee length gray shorts, and his usual bare feet. He wasn't much for formality, especially not in clothing. He didn't care if it fit what a society called "Well Dressed", if it was uncomfortable, he wasn't wearing it without a SERIOUSLY good reason.

As he was eating, that cute little kid came to him and sat down. Loki was not used to him, and went into Dan's lap for security from the new person.

"Hey Mike. How are ya, ye doin' well?"

Then he saw Mike take a single apple from a bunch of them, and started eating it. It was the sour green kind, Dan's favorite by a mile, but what kind of breakfast is a single apple? He didnt seem to be reaching for anything else...

"Oi, are ye not hungry or summat? An apple's not a breakfast, get some fish or somethin', why dontchya? Or maybe somma that french toast or pancakes or somethin'. Not a breakfast food person, meself."

Michael didn't expect such a response but welcomed it happily. "I'm good!" He answered happily as he took another bite of his apple. He gazed over at Dan's plate, his stomach turning slightly by what the other boy has chosen. Michael wouldn't call himself a vegetarian, but Michael didn't eat meat unless, well, he couldn't help it. Being a werewolf wasn't something Michael hated, but the meat eating. . . Michael wasn't the biggest fan of that. Mic would be fine if he could survive just on berries and leaves in that form, but something always made him hungry for meat in that form, maybe because he didn't eat it in this one.

Michael bite his lip at Dan's later remark, this was a good bit, it wasn't like he wasn't going to eat at dinner this afternoon. "This is all i need" he said offhandly looking down at his apple. The things Dan listed off made Michael feel full, so he laid the apple down, four small bits haven been bit from it. That was all he wanted, the rest would give him another one of those stomach aches that he hated. He didn't want any of them. "Me neither, not much of a fan for breakfast food." He said.

Dan's brows knit in confusion. That was all he needed? An apple? A single apple that he didn't even finish? For breakfast. The thing that kickstarts your metabolism. All he needed was an apple?

"The hell ya mean that's all ya need? That's a right load'a bollocks. Look, yer not even finishin' the apple fer fecks sake. Yer gonna waste away on that kinda eatin' lad."

And that was when Dan noticed something with his incredibly keen eyes. Mike seemed to be nauseous at the thought of eating. He was showing all the signs. Reluctance to eat, the uncomfortable face, the slightly slow movement...
Did he have the stomach flu? If he did, why wasn't he in the Man-Nurse's office?

"Wait, are ye sick'r sumthin' mate? Do ye need to go to the nurse? I'm sure he can put on his nurse skirt 'n fix ye right up. Muggle sicknesses 'r easier to kill here than Dark Souls' Pinwheel. Ye gotta eat more'n an apple. S'not good for ye not to eat. Specially in the mornin' right after gettin' up. Just like, a few eggs would be acceptable. Four bites of an apple is not a breakfast."

Dan began to wonder if something else was wrong... Something told him there was, but he wasn't sure what...

Michael was silent as he listened to the other boy talk. Was there really something wrong with how he ate. Eating like this was the only thing he really held onto from his home life.

His reading was slacking, from a couple books read a day to one book every couple weeks. He went from praying every night to never praying after that day. He had more to worry about then that, then what he ate.

Michael shrugged, "I guess I've just been kinda stressed lately, maybe" he said looking at the apple discarded on the table. "I'll eat more later" he said as he looked up finally.

He didn't know if we would even come down for dinner tonight, depends on his homework. He couldn't have it unfinished or sloppy. He slipped at Dan, "I'm fine Dan, perfectly healthy, I just have a small stomach." He said.

He always had a same stomach, it just. . seemed to shrink when he moved back in with his parents and sisters.

"Just ask my sisters, I just don't eat much." He kept going, wanting him to trust him about this. He didn't need Dan pointing his nose into things he didn't need to be worrying about.

Dan narrowed his eyes. Mike claimed to be perfectly healthy, but ate a few bites out of an apple, and claimed that as breakfast. Dan was not a health nut by any stretch, but his mother worked in St. Mungos, and he knew better than that.

He said to ask his sisters. Evidently he didn't eat much at home either...
Then something clicked in Dan's head.He saw the clear contradiction in what Mike said. That he's been stressed, so he wasn't eating much, but that he also doesnt eat much at home.
And if he didn't eat much at home... His parents would be worried about it, and would have done something about it.
But, they didnt.
Dan was beginning to see what was going on here. And Loki could feel the anger starting to rise in his master. So, he did what he always did, and rubbed up against him to make him feel better.

Dan looked at Mike, and kept a calm tone. But it was the kind of calm tone that Captain Hook from the 2003 Peter Pan movie (the good one) had when he was about to shoot someone.

"Mike. No stomachs are small just fer no reason. Is there anything ye'd care to mention about yer home life?"

This was, admittedly, a trap question. Regardless how Mike answered, Dan was going to read into it to find information.
An apple a day. . . PV
Michael thought about the question long and hard, truly there's a lot he would like to say about his home life a lot he thought was unfair or just plain irritating. But that he could say a lot of things but a lot of things, his home life was just home life. So Michael just shrugged, "no nothing I can think of."

Suddenly Michael felt the need to leave the lunchroom to leave then and his calculating stare, to leave the judgment and the curiosity and the pity that was uncalled for and unwanted. But he knew if he left it probably make things worse or Dan would probably catch up to him anyway so he stayed and he picked up the Apple and he took one more bite before putting it back down. Best as he chewed and swallowed he decided that it was better to feel bad than to look bad, as that was always a lesson he had been taught and he made sure to always remember his lessons. Michael looked up Dan and, though it was against his better judgment and though he knew it probably make things worse, smiled. He was fine, Dan just had to realize that.

As Dan thought, yet more was shown.

One: Instead of mentioning that his home life was fine, or offering specifics of how it was fine, he said there was nothing he could think of. A classic cover up for when one was trying to.... well, cover something up.
But why would he be trying to cover something up? Likely because his home life is something he was told not to speak of. And why would they do that, if not to hide something? Mistreatment, perhaps?
This certainly fed into Dan's theory that Mic was not eating well at home. Was it due to lack of money? Ha. Not with the outfits Dan had seen him wearing, it wasn't. Which left well, only one option, really.

Two: Mike had smiled. This might seem like it was insignificant, but one of Dan's intelligence and awareness saw the red flag here.
He didnt say anything before he smiled, and nothing after. This, was a ploy to get Dan to trust his testimony. Or rather, to trust that there was no need for a testimony to be given, as there wasn't a testimony to be given. He was absolutely hiding something.

Conclusion: There was definitely something wrong with Mic's family life. But pressing any further would likely cause him to become very defensive, and possibly angry. Dan wanted to be friends with Mic, and wanted to help him. Not make him angry and clam up even harder.

So, he smiled back.

"Thank ya, Mic. That's all I needed to know."
