Dialogue: Liana - #09621b
@Noah Jupe
Learning charms independently sounded like a swell idea. After all, Liana had been doing just that with Defense Against the Dark Arts; she now knew as many spells as an underachieving second-year student might know, and this was only her first month at Hogwarts! So why shouldn't she try her hand in Charms, too? Hildegard Schneider was mastering some advanced upper year spells, so learning something from first-year curriculum shouldn't bee too tough. Or so the redhead thought when settling into a nook by the window in a deserted corridor. She opened her Charms textbook, pressed on the centre so the pages would flatten a bit and the book wouldn't close back up, and examined the required movement pattern for the Wand-Lighting Charm. It looked plain enough. The girl pulled out her wand and held it up.

''Lumos,'' she incantated, drawing the loop indicated in her study materials. The tip of her wand remained unchanged. The first-year frowned, glancing down at the textbook. It would be a nigh-unachievable feat to mess up the pronunciation of a two-syllable word, so she probably did the wand movement wrong. Although that one also appeared to be too straightforward for someone as high-achieving as Liana to muck up. ''Lumos,'' the Slytherin tried again, with much the same effect, or lack thereof, as before. Now it was just frustrating. The girl sighed, suppressing her disappointment and quickly scanning the paragraphs regarding the spell's usage. Apparently, regular Lumos didn't work in darkness that was too deep, or in one that was magically enhanced. Or was it just that the spell wouldn't penetrate the darkness in such a situation, while the wand would actually be lit? Either way, the corridor wasn't that dark. If anything, it was well-lit. So could it be that the wand wouldn't light up at all if it was too light around? That didn't seem right, although it would be the closest to a reasonable explanation, other than her being unable to repeat a simple wand movement.

''Lumos?'' she tried again, her voice coming up at the end of the word. That sounded like a question and it probably damaged the flow of the pronunciation. The girl groaned in quiet exasperation. ''Why won't you light up?'' she asked her wand, knowing perfectly well the inanimate object wouldn't respond. ''Lumos... Lumos... Lumos!'' her voice was growing more irritated with every unsuccessful cast, and by the end her wand movement looked more like a circle than a spiral, the girl's hurry to try casting the spell another, and another, and yet another time in hopes of succeeding taking away her diligence for a while.

Noah was talking to the Professor of Charms, waiting for the corridors to be deserted, or empty, as he hated when people would touch him. He walked out, proud of himself in his second year. He worked hard last year, and it showed. Granted, Noah was better at Herbology and Astronomy as they didn't require magic, and Noah was proficient in muggle schooling.

When he went out into the hall, passing a nook with a... first year female. Her robe told him that she was a Slytherin. The Slytherin kids aren't bad in their later years, and Noah thought it might help if he got to know the girl a little better. "I'm Noah Jupe, a Second Year Gryffindor. Lumos, huh? That was hard for me too last year, but let me help you." Noah proceeded to lean over her shoulder to make a little loop with his wand while clearly stating "Lumos!" bright enough to read the text. "Try making a little loop with your wand, and try to clearly enunciate the letters. This will help you with your spell casting, also, it may help to clearly visualize what you are casting."

Noah nodded, but wanted to show off his skills, so he used a spell he picked up in Defense Against The Dark Arts, it may have been a little malicious of Noah, but he decided to cast Obscuro. "Ob-scur-oh." The unique feeling of knowing a spell to cause disadvantage, is the whole reason why the boy loves this spell. He used his wand in a lying eight motion, trying to make sure not to compare it to a infinity sign.

Her frustration was peaked about as high as it ever did for Liana, meaning she was starting to ignore the surrounding world and focusing on the task at hand more than was healthy or productive. So it shouldn't have come as a surprise that she didn't notice the approach of another student. Come as a surprise it did, however, and the girl flinched as a voice started chattering right next to her.

''I, uh, I didn't realize you were there,'' she spoke slowly in response, trying to read this strange Gryffindor that seemed to enjoy sneaking up on studious people and who pulled out his wand during a conversation. ''I'm Liana Kerr, Slytherin, first-ye- Oh!'' she exclaimed as he cast the Wand-Lighting Charm. The light blinded her momentarily, hurting her eyes that were already adjusted to the original lighting of her nook. In addition, the cast was successful, which probably annoyed her more than the brief discomfort of her vision. Was he showing off? He had to be. To add insult to injury, he started lecturing her on casting the spell properly.

''Yeah, I know, I was pronouncing the incantation correctly and I was making the loops, so... I... don't... need...'' her words started faltering as she saw him pointing his wand in her direction again. She was already wary due to his previous behaviour, and this new act just flared her suspicion up. ''What are you-?'' was all she managed to get out before it became very much evident he was casting a spell at her.

The girl scrambled away from the windowsill at the very last moment, the blindfold that was meant to tie itself around her head only brushing the sleeve of her robe instead. Liana's heart was pounding. What in Merlin's name..? He just attacked her without any warning! The redhead wasted no time in turning her emotional state from startled to enraged.

''What's your problem, Jupe?'' she hissed, ignoring his apology. One did not just cast a spell at a Kerr and get away with it by saying they were sorry. No. They had to be made to feel sorry. The girl leveled her wand at the newfound rival. Still traumatized by her previous, quite unsuccessful attempt to cast the Blindfolding Charm in a stressful situation, she resorted to employing a simpler attack. ''Verdimillious!''

Noah looked startled, he failed his attack. It was awful. And now the girl... Liana Kerr... was against him. All he wanted to do was to show off his talent, but just as he failed his casting, he frowned, his eyes dilated as the girl cast Verdillious upon him. The bright green light was really bright. He threw up his hands, attempting to shield his eyes.

He jumped back, not being able to see anything, except a dizzying point where everything multiplied, like a kaleidoscope. He decided to bring out a spell, that is quite interesting. Mimblewimble, it was. Perhaps it would keep her from gaining the ability to cast spells on him. Noah glared, pointing his wand towards the Slytherin girl, his temper finally reached his head. Circling his wand in circles twice with his wrist while shrieking, "MIMBLEWIMBLE!" It was such passion in his heart, you could tell it was 'in the moment.'

Noah didn't care about missing class, in general, he does, but at this point, he wants to end the unfair perspective. Was Gryffindor and Slytherin bound to fight each other, to make enemies with each other? It was dangerous, as it seems, but Noah hoped that his spell succeeded to tie the opponent's tongue. No one attempts to duel Noah without facing the punishment. Even if Noah has to face it.

It was an exhilarating experience to see her spell succeed in combat. Liana almost forgot to stay furious, but she got a grip on her emotions and pulled the rage back over her mental state, replacing the momentary glee. The fight was far from over, despite her managing to gain the upper hand. There was a dozen ways this could go wrong, and one of them most definitely was starting to gloat before the unexpected duel came to a conclusion.

The Green Sparks appeared to have irritated the strange boy quite intensely, his eyes seeming to flash in anger, his wand movement and voice conveying a sort of mania, a desire for his spell to hit her and hurt her. It was, admittedly, quite uncanny to observe a twelve-year-old in such rage. As the blue light erupted from the tip of his wand, she stepped sideways, doing her best to get out of its path.

The blue ray flew past her, disappearing down the corridor, illuminating the dimly lit walls blue as it flew past them. She was lucky he seemed to have been quite disoriented by her own previous attack, one that damaged his vision and aim for quite a while. Sadly, the girl was sure the harm would wear away soon - the teacher did mention the spell would only work for a short time, and that first-years should use it to give themselves the time to escape a foe. Liana did not intend to run away, however, and the window of opportunity for doing so had closed either way.

''You're insane, you know that? Starting duels out of the blue like that,'' the girl informed the second-year. ''Did you think I would be an easy target?'' She trained her wand at Noah again, racking her brain for a spell she could use to cause some pain, like he clearly intended with the spell that he had missed. ''Tarantallegra!'' the redhead exclaimed, drawing the tip of her wand upward, then horizontally to the right, and back down in the shape of legs, the way the Charms professor had demonstrated in class.

Noah Jupe was dancing uncontrollably. His anger only seemed to rise. His spells failed twice in a row, Mimblewimble didn't seem to work, and his original spell, Obscuro, was a failure. Clearly, Noah had talent and knowledge, but not skills. He cried out a word of immense pain, as he blinked off the blinding green spark. The length of time he had to think about it was humiliating. His feet were going all over the place, but after a few seconds of embarrassing moves, he seemed to be doing the twist with his legs, it was awkward and looked hilarious.

Orchideous was cast, the Herbology flower summoning charm was brought. He made a circular motion with his wand, "Orch-ad-i-eous," he said. The anger clearly fueling his determination. He desperately wanted the girl to look funny, with flowers growing out of her head. He had angry hopes, and visualized neon green flowers growing out of her head, since she was a slytherin. Of course, Noah had to think twice about casting Incendio Duo, as it would be hard to cast that spell when he was forced to dance, magically of course, but as humiliating as it was, Noah really had to admit that this might be the form of exercise that his doctor was talking about.

Another attack proving successful, Liana could barely hold back a victorious grin as she watched the boy's leg tap away a dance that lacked any sort of gracefulness or coordination, and thus was exceedingly amusing to behold. Gloating was risky, yes, but she could do it just a little, right? No harm in openly taking pride in her unbelievably lucky accurate aim. No harm to her, at least, although some might be inflicted on her foe's pride.

''You should acquire better dance steps, really. There's no rhythm to your movements. This is just disgraceful,'' she mocked. The boy's strained facial expression showed that it wasn't too comfortable having one's legs move about wildly without exercising any sort of control over it. She was about to make a comment on that as well when she realized the boy was preparing to cast another spell. The awareness came a tad bit late, too.

Effect: The spell only hits at half of its power, spraying Liana with loose flowers.
She was hit square in the face with half a dozen of orchids. Coming at quite a high velocity, the impact stung a little, and Liana stumbled backward in alarm, not sure what was happening. Was this some sort of trick? Or did he mispronounce an incantation that was meant to conjure something else? It did sound an awful lot like the piece of magic did exactly what it was intended to do, judging from the root of the word and the orchids presently scattered at their feet. So was this perhaps a sort of white flag, an offer of truce? No, it couldn't be. There were much simpler ways to ask for an end to the duel. He likely just cast the wrong spell in the excitement of the moment. Either way, she felt like maybe now running away would be a good idea. Liana would not be fleeing in defeat, after all. She would be... strategically retreating before their impromptu duel was discovered by a staff member. She would only need to buy herself some time, so that Jupe doesn't fire at her back. And she knew just the spell to disable him for long enough.

''Obscuro!'' the girl incantated, moving the tip of her wand in the lying-eight figure.

''No!'' she exclaimed in distress, the regret of her previously displayed hubris flooding in. The spell missed its fidgety target, hitting a wall behind the boy instead. This was the second time she had attempted using the Blindfolding Spell in combat, and it failed both times. Perhaps there was a lesson to be learned here.

Noah Jupe was proud of himself, as he sucessfully caused Liana to get flowers in a way, but it was funny as well, as she missed Noah with the blindfolding spell. Granted, he was still dancing, but at least it was slowing down. His legs were feeling less pressure. That seemed to be a good thing. But he was at risk, as she refused to give up. Now, Noah didn't realize it then, but he actually meant the Flower hair growing spell as a mean of truce, or giving up. Noah didn't want to deal with any more bodily damage, especially since a First year can defeat him.

"Are you kidding me?!" Noah exclaimed, offended. "What we are doing is illegal. But before you can go and tell the professor what happened, as I don't want to lose my position on the Duelling team." Once again, he made circles with his wand, his wrist turning. "MIMBLEWIMBLE!" Noah cried, his heart leading the way for a heartfelt moment that Noah felt. It was indeed in the spur of the moment, and Noah as ashamed that he participated in a duel with a first year, who wasn't even a dueller. Not even the professors or prefects allowed it, nor did they know.

Deciding to leave, hoping that the girl was tongue tied and couldn't cast any spells at him when he left, tears streaming down his face. It was indeed a humiliating moment for Noah, and he felt disgraced for that. He knew better than that, and yet he broke rules at Hogwarts, and dragged in a first year too.

Quite distraught about her failure, the first-year listened to her opponent's indignant litany in silence. So he had self-awareness enough to know they were breaking school rules now, well that's good to know. His accusation, however, pricked at the girl's wounded pride, making it lash out in pain at its attacker.

''I was not planning on saying anything to the professors, I seem so have handled you rather easily on my own,'' she jabbed at him verbally. Indeed, it would be quite a moronic move to inform a staff member about their encounter, not least because she seemed to have harmed the boy more than he'd harmed her. In all likelihood, she would receive a worse punishment, although any sort of punishment would not be welcome. And Liana wasn't the snitching type either way - she would not tell on a rival to an authority figure, this was a lowly move employed by those who did not posses the mental prowess and skill required to best an opponent on their own. ''I'd think you would be the one to run to a teacher for help, given the circumstances,'' the girl continued, indicating Jupe's restless legs with a nod of her head. Instead of retorting, he was beginning to cast another spell at her; the sight forced a low, exasperated growl to come out of Liana's throat. ''You can't be serious...'' she hissed, preparing to evade the attack.

Once again, luck was on her side her agility prevailed, and the girl got out of the offensive spell's path in time. She huffed proudly, already raising her wand to cast another spell; however, the Gryffindor was departing, and she was no longer so wroth as to shoot somebody in the back. The first-year watched him leave, and stood still for a little while after he rounded a corner, listening to make sure he had truly left and did not just hide with the intention of taking her unawares again. His footsteps faded away gradually, which made her relax a little.

This had been... well, queer, for lack of a better word. Being assaulted like that, without any explanation, and having a flurry of strange spells cast at her. Liana had stood her ground, true, but she was now wondering how come her interactions with upperclassmen, particularly those a year older, tended to escalate into conflict so fast. First there was the encounter with Thawin, although there the redhead was only caught in the blast instead of being the main target; then Salvatore, with whom the first-year had a scuffle in the library; and now this boy, Noah Jupe. Had someone jinxed her to antagonize second-years specifically?

The girl picked up her textbook and closed it, unwilling to resume her attempts at casting the Wand-Lighting Charm. Perhaps she should ask Hildegard for assistance, or just wait for Professor Fresnel to instruct them about it in class. Liana clearly needed to improve her aim and learn to properly cast the spells she already knew; learning new ones could wait. Some target practice would be desirable. With that thought in mind, she set froth from the scene of the crime, heading towards the dungeons.
