First Year Entrance
It would be easy for Tristan to assume that Maggie and Aurora were already friends, seeing as they entered the boat together; if he thought about it a little more, he might have thought that they were already all first years, so no one really knew anyone.
But his attention turns to Aurora now, when she speaks – his eyes following hers back to Hogwarts, to give the majestic building another long look. “It’s where we’re going to be for the next seven years,” he says. “It looks like it’s been carved out of a dream, ay?” he offers to Aurora, with a cant of his head as he tosses the question her way, his chin going back into his hand as he slouches, his eyes lingering on that sight.
The talk of the monster that lurks beneath the water was a little more distracting, and his smile – a bit calm and sedate, springs back up onto his features afterwards. At least, until he was splashed. The young man’s tongue sticks out a bit and he darts up to sit up a bit straighter. But just for a moment; he had elder brothers and sisters at home, so teasing was par for the course there. A bit odd from a stranger, but still.
His brows lift, and that smile turns into a bit of a grin. “Do we dare?” he asks at first. “Although I suppose the better question is… how well do you swim?” he asks, his eyes cutting from Maggie to Aurora then, another breath drawn in and released by him. It was a distraction from his nerves – and Maggie seemed very casual about this whole thing.
It was helpful for him.
Although he latches onto something Maggie says, his eyes mildly widening as he regards Aurora. “Are you a mermaid?” he asks. Is that what the teal hair meant? If so, maybe Maggie was well-knowledgeable in magical things already. Likely just clever, but still…!
“Oh, I’m Tristan,” he adds, his Central Scottish accent rich in his otherwise calm voice. “Pleasure to meet you both.”

Aurora look over the side of the boat slightly, the water was still, other than ripples from the boats moving across it, and it looked like a never ending pit of water. This made Aurora slightly nervous as she didn't know how deep it really was.
"It really is more majestic and beautiful in person"
“It’s where we’re going to be for the next seven years,” the dirty blonde haired boy said, "It looks like it’s been carved out of a dream, ay?”
"Yea it does."
Aurora went back to looking at the castle as they got closer, she was barely listening to what the other two occupants of the boat were talking about.
Before long she heard the girl say, "You kinda look like a mermaid," This took Aurora by surprise, "Oh, um thank you?" she says, more like a question. Aurora suspects that this comment must've unnerved the blonde haired boy as he immediately asked “Are you a mermaid?”
"Uh no I'm not"
Aurora went quiet again just enjoying the serenity of the surrounding water, and thinking about what's to come. Aurora started thinking about the sorting ceremony that would take place once they were in the school. This made her nervous, she knew she'd have to be in front of hundreds of other students while getting sorted.
Her attention was brought back to the other occupants on the boat when she heard them introduce themselves "I'm Maggie. Hawkins," said the warm brown eyed girl,
“Oh, I’m Tristan,” the dirty blonde haired boy replied “Pleasure to meet you both.”
"I'm Aurora" she said slightly nervously while smiling.

Della was staring deeply into the lake water when another boy joined her in the boat. She was wondering what types of animals might be hiding in the lake. Many of her textbooks mentioned magical creatures--and she realized that they must be real. Did this lake contain merpeople? She had heard the boy in the first boat saying something about a giant squid. Surely these boats were safe . . .interacting with @Geoffrey Donovan

Another person causing the boat to rock scared her for a moment and she gripped the edge of the boat. The boy was about as tall as her and he had dusty brown hair. He greeted her and offered a small, shy smile. Della turned towards him and gave him a shy smile back. "Hi. Um, I'm Della." Even though she had met a few new people so far, Della was still not used to the introduction thing. On top of the anticipation of seeing the castle and hopefully not falling into the ominous lake, she was nervous to talk to this boy. She hadn't had any friends that were boys back at her old school and now she was in close proximity to one in the small boat.

A real-life mermaid? Perhaps? Or not, because Aurora was quick to shut down the mere idea of something so ridiculous. Huh. Not much for simple jokes and teasing words, was she? That was fine. Maggie could more than make up for it. Plus, Tristan Wolfe seemed easy to please and amuse.
"You guys ever read The Chronicles of Narnia? This place looks like what you'd expect to see in something like that," Maggie asked, leaning back against the boards that bracketed the boat. Bad idea, because the weight administered to the wood was unexpected and tricky. The boat lurched, sending Maggie tipping backward.
Thankfully, magic boats were not accustomed to capsizing due to the actions of eleven-year-olds, so it bobbled right back up, steady in the dark waters. "Jee-zus!" Maggie laughed, curling her fingers over the edge of the boat and looking at the assembled others around her. Woah! What a ride! "Can you guys swim?"
For no reason. She was asking just because, honest, totally insignificant. Maggie would never legitimately tip their boat over, promise, but it was so, so fun to pretend. Just a little bit of fun, wasn't it? "What would you do if I just... rocked it," she grinned and rocked her body side to side, rocking the boat in turn.
Ha! What was a magic school without a little fun?
After a few moments, though, she stopped, going still in the boat. "Great to meet you. Mermaid," she pointed to Aurora, "and Squid," her finger turned towards Tristan.
New nicknames! Mermaid and Squid.

"Oh I've heard of that, I've never read it though."
Maggie leant back against the side of the boat, causing the boat to lurch and rock slightly.
Aurora threw her hands out to the sides of the boat, as she was sitting at the bow where the boat came to a point, her hands curled around the sides of the boat to steady herself.
Thankfully, the boat didn't roll over and just bobbed around a bit until it steadied itself.
"Great Merlin, this girl's gonna get us killed soon, I swear." Aurora thought to herself, while smiling and shaking her head slightly.
Aurora turned her head towards the school and released a sigh of relieve, they were nearly at the docks outside the school. Suddenly the boat started to rock again, Aurora's head snapped to look at Maggie again. There sitting across from her Maggie sat grinning, rocking her body side to side so the boat rocked. Aurora smiled and shook her head, she liked Maggie as she was fun and confident, which drew Aurora to her, hopefully they'd become friends.
Aurora looked over at Tristan, she noticed his eyes were wide, "he must be frightened about falling into the lake", Aurora thought, "incase the giant squid was real."
Looking back over towards the school Aurora noticed they were very close to the docks now, maybe just 25 meters away at most.

“I don’t think I’ve heard of the Chronicles of Narnia,” begins young Mr. Wolfe, his tongue sticking out against his upper lip. “Is that a muggle thing?” he adds, his hand coming up to scratch the side of his cheek.
A pause further.
“Although maybe,” he says. “If this place was in one of those books – maybe the author was a Squib or something,” he ventures. “Or whoever Narnia is that they want to Chronicle,” he offers, his brow waggling just a bit.
Just a bit. Maggie rocks the boat, and his hand goes to the side of the thing, clutching on – not for dear life, perhaps, but enough to steady himself until the magic causes the thing to right itself, the lurching causing him to slide a bit down his seat. “Hey now!” he says. “Careful with that! I can swim a bit, but I don’t know if I can outswim squids,” he says. “Or a flock of merpeople,” he adds, his eyes torn from the majestic sight of Hogwarts to look over the dark water as they glide over it.
The water held secrets beneath, he was sure. But in the night, it was impossible for him to see beyond. The new nickname didn’t seem to suit him fine. His nose crinkles, and he looks to Maggie, although there was a though. “You know, I don’t know if I know what a mermaid looks like, anyways. I mean, you hear the stories – are they even true?” he asks.
They were getting near the docks. And that easy smile of his fades, and he shifts a bit in his seat on the boat. Judgement time was a’comin’, wasn’t it?
“Sorting ceremony soon,” he says, his voice perhaps a bit clipped.

"Pretty sure the boat's enchanted, Squid. We aren't gonna fall in," Maggie droned, crossing her left ankle over her right thigh. "I bet they're enchanted. I mean, this is magic school, so."
The only correct assumption, actually, because it was safe to just assume that any time you were on a vessel of any sort, it was enchanted for maximum comfort and convenience. Common sense.
Maggie surveyed her fellow first years with pursed lips. Just looking at them closer, more intimate. These two seemed like fine friends. Good people to study with, to hang around when you had nothing else to do. Not that magic school seemed like it would get boring, but it was always safe to check. "Huh? Oh, yeah. It's a muggle story," she confirmed. "Those muggles are pretty decent at stories, though. Pretty realistic. As far as I know, that is, I've never really experienced something like this before."
Maggie Hawkins had never been particularly skilled at not talking her lips off.
"Mermaids have to be real. They have to! Though, I'm not sure if they look like that," she gestured broadly to Aurora, "or are, like, hideous sirens."
Who knew?
Yes, right, the sorting. The sorting that Maggie had heard so much about and yet had no idea what to expect! "Ah. Yes. Sorting. What do you guys hope to be?" Hopefully talking to these students would prove useful in finally understand what on God's green earth the other students were talking about. "Does it really matter what you are? I mean, my mom was a Ravenclaw. I dunno what that means, honestly. Are there bad houses?"
Was this like Pokémon? Holy cow, it was like Pokémon!

Seren had continued on to a boat, after bumping into the tall boy, and climbed in. She was staring out at the lake, thinking how very dark it was here and how many stars she could see. Compared to London, this was like being in an entirely new world, and one she had never really imagined.
Oh she had imagined Hogwarts, certainly... But not this intense darkness, or that many stars. She had rarely been outside of London, growing up, and generally only to her grandparents' home just on the outskirts of Cardiff. It was still within the city's light dome, so she had never seen anything like this, and it was a revelation to the girl, who had always loved seeing the stars she was named for. Her expression, looking towards the incredibly dark sky, was one of entrancement and astonished delight.
She stared for a long moment, possibly awkwardly long, given that other people were around her and having a conversation... Or at least greeting each other... And then she suddenly came back to herself, and blushed red, realizing she was probably being very rude by not even acknowledging her new companions. She looked around the boat, noticing the blonde girl and then... Blushing even more as she recognized the boy she had run into so recently.
She licked her lips, in a nervous gesture, glancing between them again, before saying in a voice that was just barely loud enough to hear "Hello... I'm Seren..." Her hand brushed nervously along her plait, like she was looking for any stray hairs or just trying to calm herself, but she met both of their eyes with her nervous blue ones.

Oh, she didn't ignore him!
His brain blanked in that instant though, long enough that another girl on the boat had time to introduce herself as well. Two introductions in and he suddenly felt very, very on the spot. He was currently nameless to them but he couldn't for the life of him think of what he was supposed to say next. The boat rocked a bit as it turned ever so slightly to the right; his thoughts flickered briefly to wonder if it was following some kind of path like one those river rides at amusement parks. Some magical, invisible railing perhaps? But how many sets of rails were there? The boats weren't in a line like in those amusement parks. They were free-floating on their own paths, it seemed--
'Focus!' he thought as he cleared his throat. His nerves had always surfaced and took hold of him when it came to meeting new people. Clearly now wouldn't be an exception.
There was perhaps a beat of silence before he finally said, "I'm, uh.. I'm Geoffrey." Another beat of silence and he felt awkward with leaving it there so he went on. "But Rhys to everyone but my parents. Oh, and the odd teacher." He smiled at that, his expression halfway between awkward and amused.
Hopefully not too awkward.

Setting Out
"Kit, how many times have you done this? Doesn't it ever get old for you? Have any students capsized into the lake on your watch before?"
When a black-haired boy (@Avery Chen) began asking him questions, Kit's brows shot up at what was asked and he began to chuckle. Then he held up his index finger.
"I've actually never done this before. This would be my first time," he admitted with a soft smile. "But don't worry. I've been caretaker for about a year now and I don't plan to let any students fall into lake or any boats capsize on my watch." His chuckle transformed into a strange sort of sneer as he leaned down to speak to Avery in a conspiratorial fasion. "I really don't like getting wet, you see."
"Mister, is it true that there is a Giant Squid living in here?"
A girl (@Hildegard Schneider) piped up next with a question about the Giant Squid. At that, Kit nodded, eyeing a few other kids who had started murmuring amongs themselves about the creatures living in the lake. "Yes, there's a Giant Squid, but as long as you don't bother it, it won't bother you. That said, I suggest you keep your hands out of the water," he commented, smirking at a choppy-haired girl (@Maggie Hawkins) who seemed to be having fun attempting to splash her boatmate.
"How long have you been a caretaker here? My sister was saying there was a squid in this lake. Are there really a squid? They say the Hogwarts exams are very difficult. Did you read hogwarts? What was your house?"
A slew of other questions was thrown at him by someone else sitting next to a quiet girl (@Dancelos Grey) and Kit laughed at the boy's enthusiasm.
"I've been a caretaker for about a year now...or it will be later this month. Your sister was right; there is a giant squid living in this lake. The Hogwarts exams will probably only be difficult if you don't study for them. And actually, I went to Ilvermorny school in America, but I think if I went to Hogwarts, I'd be a Slytherin." He beamed at the kids in his boat. "I look forward to finding out what houses you all will be sorted into soon yourselves." Then something caught his attention out the corner of his eye. "Oops...excuse me. Just a minute."
Getting up, Kit hurried over to the boat where a boy with dirty blonde hair (@Tristan Wolfe) was pulling his suitcase into his boat with him. "Ah, ah, ah! Sorry, kiddo, but we can't take your luggage in the boats with us. Leave it behind and it'll be brought to your dorm rooms later. Promise." He picked up the suitcase and carefully set it ashore before heading back to his own boat.
Finally, everyone seemed ready to be off. "Everyone seated and comfortable?" he called to all the boats. "Alright, then let's get going!" Taking out his wand, he lightly tapped each of the boats and they began to push off into the water, their lit lanterns bobbing about.
Some new students seemed shy and nervous. Looking around, Kit noticed a lot of red faces and anxious body language. A few of the kids, however, seemed quite bold - perhaps a bit too much so. Kit made a mental note to keep an eye on those ones. Casually leaning back in his own boat, he eventually slipped one hand into the water and let it trail lazily into the dark depths.
"The boats may be magically propelled on their own, but that doesn't mean they can't tip over," he called to a nearby boat (boat 3) who he had heard talking about the boats being enchanted. "Be careful to keep your balance and don't rock too much. We've had kids fall in before."
He turned back his attention to the kids in his own boat. "So! What are all of your names, since you all now know mine?"
