Familiar, Not Quite Forgotten Faces
--Wed. June 23, 2021⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯The school year was coming to an end. In just a week, the Hogwarts express was going to come to take them all home, and Gia was so not ready for that to happen. There was a lot more stuff she wanted to do, more people she wanted to prank, more, more, more... and there just wasn't enough time for all of it. Luckily, it wasn't as if she wouldn't be seeing her friends for a whole two months since she'd signed up for the Hogwarts summer camp, but still… who knew Gia would be missing school? It wasn’t like her at all, really.
Gia scanned the Great Hall for familiar faces right upon entering. It had somewhat become a habit, and she did the same thing each time she entered. It was no fun eating alone in her opinion—friends made everything so much better. Even just an acquaintance would be fine, honestly. When a flash of a familiar face caught her eye, Gia waved towards the figure. “Paisley?” she called. She’d seen the other Gryffindor in her classes multiple times throughout the school year, and had passed her in the corridors once or twice, but the two of them hadn’t really spoken spoken since that day was back in. . . December?! Had it really been that long?
The twelve year old waited a few seconds to see if the other girl would come over. If Paisley did so, Gia would give her a grin. “We really need to do that thing where we dress up in huge pink dresses soon — the school year is practically over!” This had been one of the things the two had discussed — why? Who knew — way back months ago. So hopefully Paisley remembered what she was talking about. “I haven’t seen you in so long! How are you?” She would add.⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯ 318 words--

Familiar, Not Quite Forgotten Faces

Paisley was relieved the school year was coming to an end. Waking up early, working all day, then sleeping in the same room as all the other first year Gryffindor students was proving to be very draining. The other girls were loud some nights, quiet others. There was no telling how they would act each day. Needless to say she had limited energy left, and slumped down at the table wearily. She dropped her bag on the floor beside her, and the contents spilled all over the floor.
"Great." she muttered, "Just the perfect way to start the morning." She leaned down and scooped up her papers and shoved them back in her bag. She collected the quills, one of which had rolled under another students foot, and put them back in securely, trying to be discreet.
She was prepared to eat a nice breakfast. Her stomach grumbled. The upside of not having very many friends was that she got to eat in peace, and had time to think every morning and night. She poured a glass of orange juice and scanned her options for food.
She hadn't been very social lately. In fact, one could say she hadn't even been around school at all. The truth was she had just been busy: too busy for being worried about anything but classes. The schoolwork had caught up to her at last, but it was her own fault for not carving out any time for being social. The truth was that she didn't entirely care. She had been around people, after all, why did it matter if she spoke to them or not?
She put a few pieces of toast on her plate and got ready for her first bite. Her mouth was open when someone called her name. She looked up, wondering who on earth it could be, and saw it was none other than the first year she had talked to briefly months ago. What a coincidence.
About a hundred emotions passed through her mind at once, giving her face a glazed-over serene expression. Was she angry? Relieved? Annoyed? Or just very burnt out? She had no idea. She may have been both hungry and mentally exhausted, but she was nice, so she put down her toast and stood up. She approached Gia, and the girl's energy was like a slap in the face. As Gia spoke Paisley's eyes only grew wider. This would be an interesting conversation.
"Dresses? Oh, right. Yes. That would be fun. And funny." Paisley nodded. "I'm good." she rubbed her eyes with the palms of her hands. "Tired." she laughed dryly, although nothing was funny. "How are you? You look...uh...taller? And your robes are so clean. And who doesn't like clean robes...right?" She was inwardly kicking herself for what she had said already. "Sorry. That was weird. Have you been enjoying your last days of school?"
