After flying lessons
Now in second year, flying wasn't a mandatory class anymore. Lea could have done something else with this time- she wasn't a quidditch player, she wasn't a broom racer, she had little interest in a broom- except that she had a fear and a stubbornness. The idea of flying on a broom where it was so easy to fall off the sides never interested her, but the girl didn't want to feel behind either. And so Lea would continue taking the class, happier on the days spent learning or taking care of the brooms rather than trying to learn tricks up in the air.
Today's lessons had stayed on the ground, thank goodness. But the second year knew that that wouldn't help her improve- it was already obvious how far behind she was compared to classmates, and this year had barely started. Not practicing would only put her further behind- so she steeled herself, trying to calm herself down as eyes searched for a usable school broom.
The weather wasn't bad. While the clouds threatened rain, none fell. There was a bit of a breeze, but nothing that Lea had any reason to freak out over. Her clothing wasn't going to get tangled with the broom as it fell- leggings couldn't do that and her hoodie didn't have long enough strings for that. No, there was no reason to be so nervous. "Up." That was the easiest part, something that the girl had more control over and comfort in.
It was enough to get onto her broom, pushing against the ground to fly up higher and higher. Brown eyes didn't dare look down, already shaky enough trying to control the broom correctly without rotating too much. Finally she stopped, wondering how far she had gotten up this time.
Which was when Lea made the terrible mistake of looking down.

Looking down made her arms quiver, the broom not understanding which way the girl wanted to go. Her nervous shakes would translate to quick sways side to side, increasing her nervousness and quaking. A wonderful cycle, brown eyes desperate to find something to pay attention to that would calm her down before the hufflepuff truly fell. Up, look up! And yet, she was stuck to look at the ground, watching for something, anything.
There- a person. The sporadic broom movements would stop a bit as her focus tried to identify this student. Was that... Violet? Of all the people to see, it had to be that Slytherin. Not that Lea had really made any close friends, but the dark-haired girl was the closest thing she had to an enemy- or just an annoyance that couldn't figure out how to properly do a Herbology assignment. Maybe her emotions were unreasonable, but that wouldn't stop her frustration and panic as the urge to fall remained. Violet was not who she wanted saving her.
"I- yes!" She called down, voice filled with fake authority. Really, she had no idea how to control a broom. It was obvious on the way her form would stutter step in the air when the girl should have been comfortable with a broom at this point. But now, her pride and capabilities were on the line. There would be no falling now-
Another glance down would prove that falling was very much in the realm of possibility.
There would be no falling and getting hurt, Lea amended, as though that was any easier than her first edit. "I won't fall! And I won't be needing any of your help if I did!" How ridiculous it was that the slytherin could shout insults at her without ever trying to get on a broom herself. Maybe she was just as scared as Lea- that was the hope. Raising her voice once more, the hufflepuff would shout down, "I bet you can't even fly as high as I can!" There, that would teach Violet.
Not that Lea was even that far up, but it was impressive for her at the very least.
