It was a long time since Gabriella had last met her best friend Gia. Sure, they had both been at summer camp together, but they hadn't really seen each other except once or twice, and they definitely hadn't been interacting as much as best friends normally might.

Gabriella didn't blame herself or Gia for this. It was just the way things were, and Gabby couldn't wait to hear Gia's stories from camp - and tell her her own, of course.

But what stories did she have to tell? Did Gia really need to know about the time she and Tory, her sworn enemy, were shipped together by some random third-year who still thought Gabby's name was Flora Oaks? Yes, the Ravenclaw thought to herself, Gia does need to know about that. After all, it was funny. Undignified, for sure, but when had Gabriella ever put up a show of being dignified? Ok, so she could tell Gia that. Fine. But maybe she could leave her huge row with Scarlett in the water fight out of it. And the spin the bottle drama, although she supposed she'd have to tell Gia about that. After all, it was Gia that had persuaded Gabby to take part in that ill-fated game.

At 10:45 on the first Saturday of term, Gabriella could be seen in her new dormitory, packing her black rucksack full of things to take down to the lake. A packet of cakes (an excess of food had become a tradition for when the girls met). The drawing of Gia that Gabby had been working on for ever, and had only just finished over the summer. Her new toad Aster, snuggled up asleep at the top of the bag in Gabriella's favourite hoodie. The Ravenclaw slung on her denim jacket and made her way down to the lake. It was a normal, British gloomy day - not quite autumn weather yet, but definitely not summer any more.

Gabriella arrived before Gia, and she sat down by the trunk of a tree to wait. The lake had now been restored to its pre-summer-camp form, and it looked just as if nothing had ever happened here. It was sad, Gabriella thought. This lake had been so busy just a few days back, and now... stillness. No Koldov students, no Durmstrang kids. No irritating Beauxbatons commentators. Just the dull, grey waters of the Great Lake in the term-time, gently stirring with the memories of summers past... Gabriella wondered what stories the lake would have to tell if it could speak. How long had it even been on Hogwarts grounds? Gabriella didn't know. Did anyone know, she wondered? Making a mental note to scribble some of these questions down on a notepad when she got back to her dorm, she closed her eyes and waited against the tree for her friend to arrive.

Summer had ended, much to Gia’s disappointment, and Hogwarts was back to being… normal. Or, however normal Hogwarts could get—which everyone knew was not very normal at all. It was kind of nice, she supposed, especially since there weren’t so many unfamiliar faces around anymore, with all the Koldovstoretz, Beauxbatons, and Durmstrang students gone. Then again, with them there, she had had so many more people to prank, and that had been plenty of fun.

Of course, there had been a few bad things as well, but… Gia was trying her hardest not to focus on that. Today was about her going to hang out with her best friend, and she didn’t want to be all grumpy and annoyed when they finally met up. Especially since the two girls hadn’t really seen each other in quite some time. When was the last time they had really talked to each other? Over a week—Gia was pretty sure it was back during the Spin the Bottle event on the 28th. Speaking of Spin the Bottle, Gia was very, very excited to hear how that went for the Ravenclaw. It hadn’t been all that bad for her… hopefully that was the same case for Gabby. The Gryffindor didn’t want to have convinced the other girl to do something that turned out to be a horrible experience.

There was so many things that the two of them could talk about. Gia’s new pet, for example—although Gabby had met Aquilla a few times, Gia hadn’t really told her about how she’d convinced her dad to let her get a pet, and she hadn’t shared all the troubles the little kitten had caused during the short period of time Gia had had her for. Reaching down to stroke Quill’s back, the twelve year old gave the cat a grin. Checking the time, Gia stood up, brushed herself off, and motioned for Quill to follow her out of the common room where they had been hanging out for the majority of the morning.

Making sure she had her bag, which was packed to the brim with her sweatshirt and tons—tons—of snacks, Gia hurried through the corridors and walked out towards the Great Lake where the two had planned to meet. Quill ran along side her, keeping up easily. Spotting Gabby sitting up against a tree, her eyes closed, Gia couldn’t help but want to have a little fun. Changing her steps to an almost silent tiptoe, she crept over, holding her bag in a way that would keep it from making any noise. Beside her, Quill followed suit—with the tiptoeing part, at least, since she wasn’t holding a bag. Then, once she was directly on the opposite side of the tree than Gabby was, Gia shouted “BOO!” and ducked down so she couldn’t be seen.

Of course, this was where Aquilla decided to not go along with the whole plan and give Gia away—if Gabby hadn’t recognized her voice, of course, which then again, she probably had. The little kitten walked over to Gabby and sat down next to the Ravenclaw’s bag, peering inside with an intense look on her face. Spotting the toad inside, Gia jumped out from her hiding spot and rushed over, grabbing Quill before she could do anything to the poor creature.

“Quill… don’t touch Gabby’s pet! And you really had to give away the whole thing at the very end, didn’t you?!” she admonished the cat, who simply turned her head away. Glancing back over at Gabby, Gia gave an apologetic smile. “Sorry! And… that is your pet, right? When did you get it?”

"BOO!" A familiar cry drew Gabriella out of her reverie. She jerked forward, her eyes snapping open.
"Giaaaa," she groaned, playfully. "Aww, you have Aquilla with you!" she added, when she saw her friend's cat sitting beside her and peering intensely into her rucksack. She had met Aquilla a few times before, of course, but never properly, and she couldn't wait to get to know her friend's cute little kitten a bit better.

Luckily for Gabriella, Gia had noticed something she hadn't - Quill was staring right at Aster, Gabby's toad, presumably with the intent to find out a little more about what was on the inside of a toad.
"Quill!" exclaimed Gia, jumping out from somewhere. "Don't touch Gabby's pet! And you really had to give the whole thing away at the very end, didn't you..."
"It's ok," said Gabby, with a sheepish grin, "I knew you were here. Something about you yelling behind that tree might have given it away, no?" She turned her attention back to the cat. "What you doing with my little Aster, eh?" she smiled, unable to resist her cuteness despite the fact that she had just considered tearing her pet apart. "And yeah, this is my pet," she said, scooping Aster out from his bed in her hoodie and letting him rest in her palm. He opened a lazy eye and Gabriella smirked. "This is Aster," she explained, "and he's a toad, if you hadn't noticed. In which case you might want to get your eyes tested," she added, with a cheeky grin. "I got him just before summer camp, but my parents decided I wasn't trustworthy enough to let him come to camp with me, so they looked after him in August and then posted him to me here! You enjoyed the flight, didn't you, Asti?" The toad blinked up at Gabriella and she grinned. He's really lazy," she explained, "he doesn't really do anything but sleep. And when he does hop, it's always at the most inappropriate times..."

Right on cue, Aster hopped out of Gabriella's palm and bounded over towards the lake. Hastily, Gabby scrambled to her knees and rushed after him, scooping him up just as he was about to make the final leap into the water. "Silly Aster," she berated him. "I love you, but I'm not gonna jump into the lake just to find you, you know. Nah, I don't have the commitment," she grinned, turning back to Gia.

"So yeah, this is my toad. A bit of an unorthodox pet, for sure, but toads are so underrated, and Asti's kinda cute. Anyway, I don't think you've told me yet about how you got Quill! One day he just - turned up next to you, I guess," she laughed. "Wow, we really haven't caught up lately, have we. I guess it's been hard for me... what with one thing and another... and talking to Atlas..." She stopped abruptly, instantly wishing she hadn't said anything. As of yet, Gia didn't know anything about Gabby's meltdowns in the library, and the vulnerable Ravenclaw wished to keep it that way - for now, anyway. Maybe in the future she'd tell Gia, maybe not. Maybe she'd get over it and it would turn out to have been nothing all along. But for now, this was just between her and Atlas, and whatever metaphysical being was controlling her conscience. Quickly, she got back on topic. "Anyway, yeah - tell me all about Aquilla!" she grinned. She realised she was still on her knees from rescuing the toad, so she stood up and made her way over to their things. "Do you want to sit for a while, or take a walk around the lake?" she asked. "I don't mind either way. I brought snacks, too," she laughed, knowing that Gia would understand the reference to their long-standing tradition.
