time. under sorting place. the great hall date. september 1st✽ ✽ ✽The travel to Hogwarts had felt like forever - his parents had always spoken about how it was incredibly exciting, and all of the new people you would meet, but at this point, the boy felt like they had been exaggerating to make him excited. Not to forget that they completely had forgotten to tell him about the boat tour to the castle - the boy had shaken more than he had ever imagined he would, and he did not even dare to look down, so his eyes had been placed towards the sky during the whole travel.
Now, they had finally reached the Great Hall. The boy’s eyes grew larger, as his eyes wandered around the long tables. There were so many faces - faces he had never seen before, and that he surely wasn’t going to remember again. Most of the faces looked curiously towards the groups of first years that kept entering the Great Hall. Instead of taking places at the tables, they made their way through the middle of the room, towards the front.
It was clear to see which table was which - carefully, Isaak threw a glance towards the Slytherin table. Both of his parents went to the house while they took their education at Hogwarts, so he had to go the same way. He didn’t think much about the other houses - none of them was very interesting in his eyes, and he couldn’t see himself finding a home in any of those houses. His mind was already made up.
He straightened his back, as he placed his attention upon the Headmaster, who had begun calling the names of the students. He watched excitedly as the hat was placed upon their heads before it yelled out the houses they would be in. A couple of students beside him had made it a sport to try and guess which house people would be in before they got sorted, and before long, Isaak chimed in.
There was a girl with an ice-sharp glance - all three of them guessed upon Slytherin, but the hat placed her in Hufflepuff. “I guess looks aren’t always everything…” One of the students commented, as the other two nodded. After all, the sorting hat was never wrong. It probably knew you better than you would ever know yourself, and that said something. It knew who you truly were, and there was no point in trying to trick it. It was going to figure it out.
Slowly, he could feel the nervousness moving around within him - it created butterflies in his stomach, and he could feel his palms getting more and more sweaty. He moved them slightly together, as his fingers played around nervously. They had already reached B, which meant that it probably wasn’t long before his name would be called up. He eyed the Sorting Hat slightly, waiting, as he listened to the talk around him - each time a student got sorted into a hat, the tables cheered for them, and they excitedly skipped towards the place. It seemed like most people had been happy with where they had been placed. That was always great, even though he couldn't help but get slightly more and more nervous with time, especially as the line of students under A began stopping. It just reminded him how close it was for his turn - to stand in front of the other students, to be spoken to by the talking hat, to figure out what his house would be, and to hopefully, be able to make his parents proud.
His eyes slowly got wider as he watched a boy stand up before him - he looked nervous, as he made his way towards the chair, but Isaak didn't blame him. It was scary, and he wasn't even the one standing up there. Every still seemed so surrealistic - sure, he was a pureblood and could hear the many stories that his cousins told him about the magical place, but to actually be standing there? It felt strange. Within long, the hat screamed out a house, that Isaak did not fully hear before the boy smiled over his whole face and wandered down from the chair.
"Blackthorn, Isaak!" A voice echoed through his head, and the boy noticed that he had been holding his breath. He slowly let the air out of his lungs, as he began moving towards the chair and the hat. His legs felt heavier than he could describe it like someone had thrown a sticky potion at his legs. He could feel the eyes of many placed directly on his back, and he had to remind himself to take an extra deep breath as he neared the chair. No words were spoken from his side, as he placed himself in the chair, that many had sat in before him and that many would sit in after him. He could feel his shoulders shaking, as he tried relaxing in them, hoping that the nervousness could not be caught by other's eyes.
Within many seconds, the hat was placed upon his head. He slowly relaxed down into his chair, as he closed his eyes, trying to get away from some of the eyes placed upon him. He could hear sounds coming from around the room, as he waited for the hat to say something - anything.
"Hmm... It is quite interesting," The hat mumbled, which made Isaak open his eyes a bit. Interesting? Wasn't it easy enough to just say that he belonged into Slytherin? He tried looking up towards the hat but was only met with his own hair, he tried brushing it out of the way. "You are surely ambitious, but you have other values that outshine those." The hat continued, which made the boy furrow his brows slightly.
"Just put me in Slytherin, please." The boy mumbled towards the hat, hoping that it would listen to his prayers, but he worried that it had its own ideas.
"I see. Your family must belong to Slytherin... a pure-blood?" The hat commented. It felt like minutes that it stayed silent, but it was probably just a few seconds before it finally spoke. "But your braveness outshines your ambitions. Inside, you dare to try, and your thoughtfulness show."
Needless to say, Isaak could feel that this did not go the way he wanted it to go. Instead, he closed his eyes once more, and took a deep breath, waiting upon the decision of the hat. His heart knew that it was not Slytherin, and he could feel himself being slightly disappointed. How could he tell his parents that?
"Gryffindor! The hat roared, and as soon as its decision had been made, the hat was removed from the young boy's head. He placed a smile upon his lips, even though he was unsure how far it reached. While disappointment was placed within his heart, he couldn't continue being disappointed over it. Nothing could change the sorting, and if the hat believed he fit in Gryffindor, he surely did. Now, he just had to get the best out of it - and figure out how to tell his parents. And with those thoughts, he went down towards the table of the lions.

Eleanor's eyes widened as she entered the noisy Great Hall. She had never seen anything like this room. Her eyes were immediately drawn to the floating candles above, and landed on the bewitched ceiling, littered with a thousand stars. Her mouth fell slightly open. It was beautiful. The hundreds of students at the four tables were looking curiously at them and Eleanor looked down at her feet, anticipation building in her chest. She hadn't dared to speculate too much about what house she would be sorted in, perhaps she would have gotten a preference and been sorely disappointed at the ceremony. But her mother had been in Hufflepuff, and she couldn't help but feel drawn to the house.
The first years made their way inside and when they were all inside the door closed behind them and an old man clad in armour made his way up the front. The noise in the room died down as he closed the distance to the Professors' table. The man introduced himself as Solomon Lear, the Headmaster, and as he told them about the sorting hat and the houses, Eleanor couldn't help but notice that he looked a bit ill. Perhaps it was only a sign of age, but something in the back of her mind told her it wasn't. She cast the thought from her mind and listened keenly to the Headmasters speech.
After he was finished, the Sorting Hat sang a song, and then Professor Lear began reading names off a list. Eleanor waited, somewhat nervous, as he read off the names on the list. They would sit on the stool, the Sorting Hat considered and then shouted the house they were sorted into, and each time there was a roar of applause from the table the newly sorted first year went to. Eleanor watched them go, and waited for her name. Finally, "Talpin, Eleanor," called Professor Lear and she hurried up to the stool and sat down, acutely aware that the entire school was watching her. The Sorting Hat was placed on her head and a small voice sounded in the back of her head.
"Ah, I know just where to put you. HUFFLEPUFF!" the Hat shouted this last word and the Hufflepuff table exploded in applause. Feeling very relieved, Eleanor took the Hat off and ran down to the Hufflepuff table to sit down and watch the rest of her classmates get sorted.

This is it. I...I'm not scared. That's really all I can think about, is how not scared I am. I'm excited! I can't wait for my new life to begin. And, if I ignore the nagging in my heart that misses my muggle life, I'm completely ready to forget that there was a time I had no idea magic existed. Except for visiting my parents. That, I have to do.
Anyways, as I walked forwards and sat down on the stool and the sorting hat was about to be placed on my head. Something in me shifted. On the train ride, I was 99% sure I'd be Ravenclaw. But now, sitting here in the Great Hall, absolutely no fear in my system, I knew I would be Gryffindor. And that is why, the sorting hat, only hovering above my head, not quite placed yet, had already shouted "Gryffindor!"
Loud Cheers erupted from my new classmates in the Gryffindor house, but all I could think of was, Was my certainty what got me this? It was such a nagging and important question, but when the cheers started to fade, I quickly got up and slowly walked to the Gryffindor table. That, was a thought for another time.
I was squished in between two older Gryffindor members, probably fifth or sixth years, and I clapped silently as the ceremony went on, anticipation for the coming days, even hours as I unpacked, was coursing through me like adrenaline. Actually, maybe that was what it was.
But, all questions aside, I knew one thing. This is my house. And it feels right. It feels like home.
I'm a Gryffindor and I'm proud of it.

This whole thing was...honestly, a mixed bag for him. On the one hand, what could be a greater adventure than learning that you could do magic and there was spot ready and waiting for you at a school where you learn how to be a wizard? On the other, it was a boarding school which meant leaving his family and friends behind for the whole school year. Not that he had a problem being away from them, but for that long? It was almost as hard to believe as the fact that he was a wizard.
The train ride gave him a lot of time to think about how different his life would be moving forward. Would his friends still want to be friends with him if he only ever saw them over the holidays and summer break? Would his family still treat him the same? Would he be able to make new friends? Would he find his place in this new world given he had not a drop of magical blood in his family? Would this new world change him for the better? For the worse? All worries that cropped up the longer he thought about them.
Though, somehow as he stepped foot into the Great Hall, with the massive crowd and the floating candles and the...talking portraits...his worries slowly but surely ebbed away. His expression, which had previously been neutral or only of mild curiosity, gradually became one of excitement and wonder. His eyes fixed on the headmaster as he spoke, voice booming despite the lack of a microphone. And then the hat that could talk and didn't seem to have too bad a singing voice. The Sorting Hat.
"I guess it's fair to give the responsibility to a hat," he thought quietly to himself, eyes on it as the ceremony began. "Better than risking some kind of weird bias." He was reminded of Melissa Brown, the all-star teacher's pet from his old school, and he couldn't help the way his lip curled in distaste at the memory.
He let it slip from his mind and joined in the applause as his fellow first-years were sorted one by one, and between each announcement he would glance around the room at the other students and teachers and again, the talking portraits. It was still a little strange, almost like someone took a thin TV screen and put an old fashioned picture frame around it. It might take the whole of his first year to get used to the portraits, and it made him wonder what else he would see and experience that would take a long while to get used to.
Well. He had his whole life ahead of him, so there was plenty of time. He was sure he'd eventually get used to this new world. Most of it, anyway.
Before long they finally called his name, and all at once the room felt suddenly all too silent. Not that it was, but he felt the blood drain from his face and his nerves hit him all at once. He made his way up to the front slowly, almost stiffly, eyes looking forward but not really seeing the huge crowd in front of him anymore.
"Mmm...curious... he heard the hat muttering almost to itself almost as soon as it was placed atop his head. He did his best not to ask any questions out loud. He didn't know anything about the houses and therefore had no preference, so all he could do was trust the Sorting Hat as well as what the headmaster said about it.
"...the Sorting Hat is never wrong..."
The muttering went on, he thought, for quite a bit longer (really only a few seconds), with comments of "courage" and "resilience," but also "quite a bit stubborn" and "needs some pushing but it's not a bad mind" that, he couldn't help it, made him smile as it reminded him of his mother when she scolded him. After what felt like ages the hat finally cried out, "Gryffindor!" and one of the tables erupted with cheers and applause.
Geoffrey was all smiles as they took the Sorting Hat off of his head, the memory of his mother helping to melt the nerves away as he made his way to the Gryffindor table.

Tachi has heard all about Hogwarts from her parents and had fervently researched everything she can get her hands on about all there is to know about the famous magical school, but it was nothing compared to the feeling of actually being under the floating candles and getting lost in the sea of black cloaks.
"I guess this is really it," she whispered quietly to herself as they were quickly ushered into the open space before the podium, where the sorting hat sat with beady eyes atop a rickety stool.
All the first-years stood in awe in front of the tattered hat with nothing but the feeling of anxiousness, patiently waiting to be sorted. Tachi herself wasn't really expecting anything else but to be in Slytherin, just as her parents were. She possessed all the traits it required to be a cunning snake, something her father and mother made sure of as she grew up. "Honora super Omnia", the Einar family motto which had been practically carved into her head the moment she was born. It represented the power and Slytherin purity that have surrounded their name ever since the time of Merlin himself. Yes, the Einar Lineage had been around long enough, and Tachi made sure to continue that glory as she was the next set of kin to step foot inside the castle.
After what seemed like ages, "Einar, Tachi" was finally called to step foot on the platform that decides her fate for the next 7 years of her academic life. She made sure to empty her mind and only think about the plush green curtains and rich velvet couches that await her in the Slytherin Common Room, until...
"GRYFFINDOR"
She didn't have a moment to be shocked until she found herself walking to the table of red and gold banners. She looked around and people were starting to whisper in hushed voices with their heads down and eyes wide open in curiosity.
"... the first Einar to be sorted anywhere besides Slytherin."
"Do you think she asked the Hat to sort her differently?"
"I wonder what her father might say about this."
"... something about this feels wrong."
Tachi tried to collect her thoughts as she took slow and painful breaths on the way to her new family. She forced a smile as she made way to deafening cheers of the table, having gained another lion for the 3rd call in a row and especially an Einar, to everyone's excitement. Strangely enough, there was nothing but the feeling of comfort as she was welcomed by big smiles and congratulatory handshakes the moment she sat down on the long wooden benches.

While Carmilla was waiting in front of a large door with the other students, she was very excited. And curious. consisted of candles. Carmilla was staring at the candles, fascinated, as the candles were floating on their own. Beyond the candles—the ceiling—was a starry sky. Carmilla was even more surprised. The student group of excited whisperings lined up in front of the floor like the stage opposite 4 tables. The children were looking curiously at the stool on the stage and the old torn and dirty pointed hat. A professor came in with a long piece of parchment. And he said the first name. A curly-haired girl sat excitedly on the stool. The professor placed the hat on her head. A cut part of the hat opened and spoke "Slytherin." The girl walked towards the table, which was applauding enthusiastically. Everyone was being placed in the buildings in turn. Carmilla was getting even more excited as she waited for her turn. And finally the professor said, "Tyse Carmilla." Carmilla sat on the stool, panting. Hat said, "Hmmm." "Ambitious and determined. Slytherin or not?"“No no wise and hardworking. RAWENCLAW!” the hat shouted. Carmilla ran to the waiting table, smiling. And she ate happily.

Daniel entered the place called the great hall with great excitement. It was a huge hall. He looked around in amazement and admiration. If only this part of the school was this big, it was hard to imagine how big the whole of it was. He had seen quite a bit from the outside, but he didn't think it was limited to that. He continued to look around as he walked slowly. There were four large tables running the length of the room.
He continued to advance, and when they reached the middle of the hall with the crowd around him, they stopped. Daniel realized now.. Another large table lay in front of them. There were adults here too. Judging from what he had heard, he thought these were professors. Why were they gathered here? Although Daniel came from a purebred family, his parents hadn't told him much about Hogwarts. They wanted him to find out on the spot. So he didn't know what would happen next. A moment later, the man sitting in the middle of the large chair began to speak. He said that his buildings would be chosen. So what are these buildings? He got the answer to that too. He would live in whichever of these buildings he chose throughout his school life.
The principal made a long list and started reading the students from there. Students took turns stepping forward and a shabby hat was placed on their heads. The hat began to speak. Daniel was very surprised. He didn't expect the hat to speak. Students were selected to their homes in turn. A moment later, he heard his name unexpectedly; Allen, Daniel. Daniel was very excited. He began to walk with uncertain strides, and the hat was placed on his head. The hat began to mutter something that only he could hear. He had made up his mind in less than a minute. "Ravenclaw!" the hat yell. So Ravenclaw was chosen to house it. Was it a good home? He would experience it. He got up and walked over to what he thought was the Ravenclaw table. Because other students selected to Ravenclaw also came here. He took an empty seat at the table and continued to watch the election. But he still had big questions in his mind.

Dancelos was very excited. Soon his home would be chosen. After passing the small hall, they entered the Great Hall. There were four tables. Many were looking at them. The hall was filled with the hum of other students. The tops of the tables were filled as if it were Christmas. Candles were flying on the ceiling. The walls were filled with paintings. The door waited until the last Student had passed. And then it closed. The armored man who said he was the manager made a speech. Then came a hat. It was a pointed hat. It was in the hands of a teacher. But it wasn't a regular hat. This hat was talking. The principal is a hat to get us into homes. said. And briefly introduced houses and presidents. Then he opened the parchment in his hand. The list was quite long. Even he looked surprised. Then the hat was placed on a stool. And he started to sing. behind him. Students began to be invited to choose houses. Dancelos didn't actually have a building in mind. Most of his family was from Ravenclaw, but there were people from other buildings as well. It was Dancelos' turn. And he sat on the stool. The hat doesn't touch his head. "Oh, another Grey!" And he continued. He grunted for a long time, then "SLYTHERIN!" yell. At that moment, applause broke out from the Slytherin table. Dancelos walked over to that table. He shook hands with those at the table. It was a new beginning for her.

As Penny walked into the Great Hall, her mouth opened. There was just so much to see and she couldn't focus on one thing. She heard a lot about the Great Hall and the sorting ceremony from her mother but seeing everything in person was quite overwhelming. She could feel her nervousness grow as she entered the hall with the other students. But she also felt excited and looked around to try and guess the other people's houses. Of course Penny knew about the four houses that you got sorted in. Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. Her mother was a Hufflepuff and she told Penny multiple times that she would be happy and proud no matter what house Penny would be in but Penny still hoped to get in Gryffindor, Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff.
She saw the headmaster walking down the hall with the Sorting Hat in his hands. She listened as the hat sang his song and finally it was time for the sorting ceremony. She watched the students walk up to the hat and get sorted into their houses. Finally Evans, Penny! She was careful not to trip while walking up to the hat. How embarrassing would it be to trip in front of all the students and teachers?, she thought to herself. And Penny had a talent to do embarrassing things in front of a lot of people. But she made it successfully to the chair where she sat down and got the hat placed on her head. "Hmmm ... I see ...", she heard a voice say. "You're smart and ambitious so there's only one right choice RAVENCLAW!" Penny heard the students clapping as she walked to the table with tha Ravenclaw's. She was very happy with her house and was excited to meet new people in her new home.

Aurora entered the Great Hall and her eyes were immediately drawn up to the roof, it looked just like the sky outside and was beautiful with thousands of stars twinkling. Aurora's eyes reluctantly left the ceiling and scanned the room. She noticed all the returning students were looking in the direction of the first years and she got nervous at all the people looking in her direction.
A man that looked like he'd been teaching here for many years got up from the staff table and made his way to the podium in front of the first years. He introduced himself as, Solomon Lear, the Headmaster.
Professor Lear pulled the sorting hat out from behind the podium and placed it on the stood next to him.
"This is the sorting hat, it will be placed upon each of your heads and it shall tell you your house. You are then to go sit at your respective table."
The sorting hat starting singing its song to commence the start of the sorting ceremony. Aurora stood watching as each student was called up to be sorted, finally "Crystal, Aurora", Aurora carefully walked up to the stool, extremely nervous about everyone watching her. The hat was
placed upon her head and she heard a voice say, "Ah...I see...yes, very well.....better be, SLYTHERIN!" the hat shouted her house.
The Slytherin table exploded in a frenzy of clapping and cheering. Aurora walked over to the Slytherin table, relieved and sat at the end where there wasn't many people sitting.
