And So It Begins Open Closed

Left, right, left, right, Valerie said to herself as she walked down the hall of the train, trying to keep her balance. She sighed heavily. By the time her siblings and her arrived, the train was already moving. She barely had time to say her final goodbyes to her mother (since her father was too busy working) and her brother Tommy before she got on.

And of course her siblings left to go to their friends. When she asked to tag along, they said they didn't want to be embarrassed by their first-year baby sister. Whatever that meant. She peeked inside the window of another compartment. One, two, three. Three girls, they all looked like first years. But they looked pretty invested in their conversation, so Valerie didn't want to intrude.

Her siblings were the only people she knew who went to Hogwarts, and she didn't want to intrude on anyone's conversations. She thought walking in on a conversation would be pretty awkward. First of all, joining in on the conversation, then the very, very late introduction, and the silence when you walked in... oh the silence. That was the worst part.

She groaned. Why was everyone already friends? It was as if there was a meeting before this where everyone already made friends. And there wasn't. At least none that she knew of. They probably bonded before the train left. That was the consequence of letting her sister Vivian do her one-hour first-day routine to get all pretty for her boyfriend.

She paused, realizing she was almost at the back of the train. She turned to the compartment to her left, peeking through the window. Empty. Well, it was better than joining a group who had probably already bonded with their detailed backstories and stories of what they've heard about Hogwarts.

She put her bag in the upper compartment sitting down and putting her backpack next to her. She had her books and sketchpad in it in case she got bored, so she needed easy access. She sighed. This would be a pretty long ride.

Her mom told her she would make friends quickly on the hogwarts express.

"You'll meet him/her instantly," she said, "You'll just bump into them!"

Lani tried to keep that in mind as she went to compartment to compartment, seeing if anyone would let her sit with them. So far, she had no luck. Everyone she bumped into gave her a mean look like, move aside, I'm too busy to care about you.

The closer she got to the back of the train, the less hope she had. Maybe it would be like her neighborhood again, where nobody wanted to even say hi. Lani honestly hoped that going to hogwarts would be a nice little escape from Brighton. No more bullies. No more watching fights between her parents. No more feeling lonely. Sigh. Nothing good ever comes to her. Maybe that's some kind of witch curse or something. A magic orb that surrounds you so that no one wants to be with you. After walking mindlessly, she spotted a compartment to her left, very close to the end of the train, (she must've been walking for a while), and entered

"I'll just read a book. No need for conversations..." She mumbled to herself.

Lani took a deep breath and opened the door.

Val had her head buried in a book when the door opened. A tall, blonde girl entered the room. Valerie looked up a bit, observing the girl. She looked a bit like Valerie, with shoulder-length, wavy blonde hair and light skin, but her hair was a bit darker and she had bright blue eyes.

Valerie wondered what her backstory was. People she met always happened to have detailed backstories. Was she a muggle-born excluded and judged due to her oddity and magic? A fellow pureblood, born to a powerful Slytherin family? Or maybe she was like Valerie. Average. Forgotten. Ignored and overlooked by everyone she met.

She shook her head, turning back to her book before biting the inside of her cheek. Come on Valerie, you'll be here for seven years and it'll be miserable if you don't make any friends. She set her book down, placing it against her backpack.

"Er- Hello! I'm Valerie. Valerie Laurier. Who might you be?" She asked, sticking her hand out. She wasn't the best at introductions, but it was a start.

To be honest, she found introductions quite awkward. She hated the icebreakers that teachers would do in primary school where you said your name and a fun fact. There was never really anything interesting about her. Born and raised in Nottingham, sandwiched in between three siblings, and raised by two parents who never had time for her. She hoped she wouldn't have to do them at Hogwarts.

Lani didn't expect the girl to say hi.

She honestly thought she would give her the mean look everyone else gave her, the one that told her to pick her butt up and leave. But this girl looked up at her and said,
Er- Hello! I'm Valerie. Valerie Laurier. Who might you be?
Then she stuck her hand out, maybe expecting a hand shake. Her introduction sounded like something from the 1900's. She seemed socially awkward like Lani.

Lani shyly took her hand and introduced herself. "My name's Lani. Lani Beckett. Nice to meet you, too." The girl looked like her in a way. She had the same shoulder length and light skin, but her hair was a cleaner blonde and she had hazel eyes. She looked like a pure-blood.

She's pretty, Lani thought, way prettier than me. She refocused and realized she was still holding Valerie's hand. Valerie looked uncomfortable. Lani blushed of embarrassment and pulled her hand away, "I'm so sorry," she said in a squeaky voice, "I was lost in thought..." How come she always did this? She always did something stupid that made people think she was a weird creep. That's why the neighborhood kids never wanted to hang out with her. That's probably why the other kids in the other compartments looked at her funny. Lani sighed and looked down, still blushing.

"Lani," she nodded, remembering it. "That's a nice name. What origin is that? Hawaiian, innit?"

Lani took her hand, Valerie shook it. She wasn't the best at handshakes. To her, they didn't even make sense. What did it even represent? But her mother had taught her it was good manners, and whenever an important colleague came to their house to discuss important business inquiries with her father, he'd always greet them with a handshake. Mother would too, then Toby, then Vivian. When he turned four, Tommy even started doing it too.

Hello sir! I'm Thomas Laurier, pleasure to make your acquaintance! he'd say. He made Valerie teach him the word acquaintance just for that reason. But Valerie thought introductions were too awkward. She'd wave, and go back up to her room to read her book before her mom could get mad at her.

Valerie Laurier! Get back here and show some manners! Her mom would scream from downstairs. She always just shrugged, even though her mom couldn't see her. It wasn't her fault she wasn't as friendly or well-mannered as her siblings. It wasn't her job anyway.

She paused, noticing that Lani was staring at her while still holding her hand. Why was she looking at her like that? Had she done something wrong? Was it what she said? She was probably some powerful pureblood, and what she said had been offensive or disrespectful in some way. Great. She wasn't even at Hogwarts yet and she had probably already made enemies with the most powerful one there.

"Oh! That's fine. I zone out sometimes too.." she said. It was true. She often got in trouble for it too. "Anyways," she said, trying to make the moment less awkward. "Are you excited? From what I heard from my mum and dad, oh and my siblings. They go here too. They're both Ravenclaws. They don't really seem like it though," she scoffed. "Oh sorry, I'm blabbering. Anyways as I was saying, from what I've heard, Hogwarts sounds pretty cool. I'm so excited."

Lani looked up again. Valerie had siblings? She always wanted siblings, to share a bunk bed with them, to make BFF bracelets...

Lani couldn't help herself from blurting out the question. "What's it like having siblings?" She asked. It must've been cool, building sandcastles, going on vacations... "Also, Lani means royal or high-born in Hawaiian. I don't know why my parents gave it to me. It's not like I'm part of a royal family or anything." She giggled her cute giggle. She was only a half-blood, and her mum told her that pure-bloods consider half-bloods an alien race, same thing with muggle-borns, but worse. Hopefully, Valerie wasn't like other pure-bloods, if she was one.

The way Valerie was acting though, Lani thought she would probably be a Hufflepuff. She was nice, and very talkative, so possibly a Gryffindor, too. Lani's mom told her she would probably be a Ravenclaw, but Lani doubted it. She didn't think she was that smart. Lani sighed. Until she got to Hogwarts, all the questions would be filling up her mind. It was giving her a headache. Lani was starting to become an expert at sighs now, because she sighed again and laid back. the train was starting to move. This was going to be a long ride.

"Siblings? Oh, trust me. It's HORRIBLE." She groaned, dramatically laying back in her seat. The train was starting to move now. Valerie couldn't wait. She hoped she'd get in Ravenclaw like her dad and siblings, besides, she was smarter than Toby and Vivian. If they got in she surely would have.

"I have three siblings actually. My little brother Tommy, and my older siblings, Vivian and Toby, they're both 16, they're sixth years." She noted. "But, I never seem to fit in. Tommy's way younger, and he's always on about baby stuff. Dinosaurs and spaceships, ya' know? Toby and Vivian are way older too. They're too mature. I thought me and Viv would bond over like, girl things, right? But she has a boyfriend and likes to gossip yada yada, not really my thing. Anyways, I usually hang out with Tobes, but my mom doesn't like me hanging around him because he's a 'bad influence.' He's always setting fire to things... and my parents. Don't even let me get started on my parents. My dad's always busy since he's a pretty high-ranking Auror, and my mom's either helping Tommy or the twins. Tommy needs help 'cause he's younger. Viv and Toby need help because they're older. But no help for Valerie. Because she's sandwiched in the middle and can figure things out herself," she said, rolling her eyes.

She turned back to Lani, realizing she was rambling. "Sorry. Anyways, what about you? You're an only child, right?"

Wow. Lani didn't think siblings were that annoying. She didn't even think they were mean or bad in general. What Valarie said really changed her opinion. It also left her a little upset.

"Oh," Lani said in a hushed tone. "So no siblings, then. Yeah, I'm an only child." Lani was still confused why Valerie started talking in the third person, but she didn't want to judge her for it. Maybe her 3 siblings really stressed her out, or she was quoting things her family said to her. She decided to change the subject "Aren't you excited to get to Hogwarts? My mum told me the library is huge. Like, HUGE, huge. She never saw a library any bigger. I think I may be able to find thousands of books about potions and jinxes. Oh! What if they have books that discuss the history of Pi? I think they would have more on magic and potions, but maybe somewhere they do. Maybe I could try to count all the books in each section and add all them together, but that would mean I would probably have to go into the restricted section too..." Lani looked up at Valerie, who had a confused look on her face. Lani giggled her cute giggle. "Sorry, I really like books. We both ramble a lot, don't we?"

"Yeah! I'm super excited! I've really only heard from my siblings and me dad, but it sounds so cool! I heard the library is pretty big, but that's not what I'm excited about. I'm more excited about the classes. DADA is gonna be so fun! And the sorting ceremony! I bet I'll be Ravenclaw, like my dad. And yeah, it's fine," she giggled. "People are always getting mad at me for talking too much, but I can't help it!" she shrugged.

It was true, her mom was always getting mad at her for interrupting.

Valerie! Let your sister speak! Valerie! Don't just interrupt your father! Valerie where are your manners? she shivered at the thought.

"Anyways," she turned to Lani. "What house do you think you'll be? Wait, you're a muggle-born. But surely you should know your houses. Have you read Hogwarts: A History?" she asked eagerly. "Like I said, I hope I'm a Ravenclaw. My dad was a Ravenclaw. And my siblings. If they can get into Ravenclaw surely I can. My mum was a Hufflepuff though. I'm not sure I'll be one though. I don't really.. take after her. We don't exactly get along," she huffed. "But I heard the Hufflepuff common room is comfy. Wait, I should really be taking that into consideration. Do you think the Gryffindor and Ravenclaw common rooms are stable? The castle's pretty old what if they collapse? I might want to be a Slytherin, actually. Surely being in the basement is safer.." Valerie pondered.

"I'm mostly excited for potions. Or maybe DADA. I'm actually excited about most of the classes at Hogwarts. My mum told me they're all pretty nice. I'm really excited. I used to go to a private school, and it was so plain all the time. People honestly think private schools are so cool and pretty, but it gets boring at some point. Never mind that though." Lani replied. "Also, I'm a half-blood, not a muggle-born. Don't worry, lots of people assume I'm a muggle. My mum works at the Ministry of Magic, and my dad's a pilot. Mum told me that I'll probably be a Ravenclaw, but I don't really know what I will be." Lani looked out the window, watching the hills of grass pass by.

She looked at Valerie with a quirky smile. "Not to be rude, But I think you would be a good Gryffindor. You're honestly really funny and cool. And you seem like the brave type." She sighed, then looked back at the window, staring at the cows grazing. Lani was so scared that she would be alone this year. There were so many people at Hogwarts and most of them already knew each other. But sitting here now, She realized she had been having big conversations with someone she just met. She sighed again, forming her words."I forgot to say thanks, Valerie." She started smiling. "I honestly thought I was gonna be alone this year. I'm so glad I met you." Lani felt so good inside. She actually made a friend. Her cheeks turned a light shade of pink as she turned back to Valerie. "Hey, Val?" She said, this time with a clear voice. "What's your favorite Chocolate Frog card?"
