Hogwarts Summer Camp 2021 Chess Combat Match 3 Spectator

The time had come for the final match of the Summer Chess Combat! The Viridian Vipers were coming fresh off of a spectacular season to face teams of visiting students that were brave enough to dare challenge the champion team. Would these challengers emerge victorious? Or would the Viridian Vipers vanquish their various, valorous opponents?

In this second match, the Vipers sent forth Percival Gray and Hanako Tone as their noble Rooks,
Opeila Winters and Starlee Kennedy as their daring Bishops, and Piper Clark as their lovely Queen. Their opponents were Lovanna Slovan de Sau (Selina Knight) and Greta Fransson (Evelynn Decipio) as Rooks, Enzo Delcroix (Akari Kato) and Yefim Rumyantsev (Flash Holmwood) as Bishops, and Roberta Martin (Sylvain Wyllt) as the Queen. These opponents may have been from schools that were thousands of miles apart but they were united in their belief that they could defeat Hogwarts' reigning duelling champions.

The weather was pleasant enough, not a perfect day but certainly not a bad one by any stretch. Unlike the rather aesthetic duelling stage that lay within Hogwarts, the arena that day was not particularly impressive. Magical chalk had been used to draw 5 by 5 squares in the grass. Nearby, there were benches, warded so that it was highly unlikely that any sitting there would be hit by a stray spell. Unlikely, not impossible... These warded benches were for any waiting their turn to enter the arena, as well as any who wanted to watch the matches.

Since the games were taking place one at a time, spectators could watch one, two, or all three if they so desired. Some might end earlier than others, but there was an hour slot booked in, by which the match would have definitely been finished.

Let the games begin...
OOC: This is the spectator thread for Match 3 of Chess combat. There are 3 matches taking place, this is the third and final of the day. Link to thread: Here!

Long story short, I survived

Extracurriculars were something that Evelynn tried to make a habit of attending. While her schedule wasn't always entirely obliging usually, there were no classes, assignments, practices, or even prefect duties demanding her attention. At camp, she was oddly free to do nearly whatever she pleased, and it pleased her to do just about everything. There was benefit to it all. Even in a passively observational role, there was no telling exactly what she might learn. Perhaps she might overhear a particularly interesting conversation in the stands. Perhaps an unsanctioned fight might again break out as they had during past duels that would necessitate prefect intervention. Perhaps she might make new acquaintances.

At the very least, she would have the opportunity to observe the combatants in great detail, unquestioned as to why her attentions were directed towards them. At this match, there were a few who commanded her focus. One in particular whose insistence of inserting himself where he was not welcome had driven her to wanting to learn more about him. Much as she had with D'Spacito. There was power in knowledge, and the more she could obtain, the more ammunition she had at her disposal should the situation ever call for it. But more than that. This individual was showing themselves to be something of an enigma. One who—with every interaction—she was beginning to question her own understanding of their motives.

Which was preposterous. They'd shown their true colours. She was certain of that. And yet, the uncertainty in the back of her mind refused to quiet itself. And so, she had resolved to keep tabs on them a bit more closely. Gather notes. Collect information. Reaffirm, scientifically through observation if she had to, that her initial judgments were well founded. It was for this reason that she had her journal open upon her lap, pencil in hand, ready to keep an account of the progress and outcome of the match.

This was the one duel she wanted to watch the most because she heard a certain barbican had signed himself up. It was a pity that he hadn’t been pit against her team so that she could remind him what the ground felt like. Instead, she would have to hope that this team could do it in her stead. Naturally, she would want them to win the whole match but seeing Yefim take at least one good hit would be worth it no matter the outcome.

“Come on, guys, you got this!” She cheered for the team but added on. “Kick some ass, Percival!” He was the person she was closest to on this particular team and deserved some extra cheering. Santario pulled her camera bag around from her lower back and quickly removed her camera, dropping its lens cap in the now empty pocket. With a quick adjustment of the lens, she moved to face the Slytherin team before snapping a few photos of their lineup.

Once satisfied, she lowered the camera from her face and looked at the other spectators finding a familiar face. “Hey Evelynn, thanks for showing your support for the team!” Santario smiled as she started walking over to where the lion had seated herself with her journal. Santario had received the care that she might have needed, showered, and put on some fresh closed since her own dual had happened.

Already various members of the crowd were jeering and cheering, singling out their favourites on the various teams and offering support. For the most part, Evelynn had paid them little mind, letting the commentary drift aimlessly by without particular notion. After a while, it all seemed to meld together into a white noise cacophonic backdrop that enhanced the excitement of the atmosphere without distracting. Usually, anyway. When a name was called out with reverent support against anything she might herself have provided, however, it was hard to ignore.

Percival, kick some ass!

The general lack of propriety with the casual comment, alone, have been enough to draw Evelynn's eyes. Bristling inwardly, Evelynn had at least managed to maintain the calm veneer of a neutral outward expression. On the one hand, good for the Hogwarts students for having supporters in the crowd. That was important. Both to bolster their spirits and confidence and temper that of the opposing team. Slytherin or not, they were still Hogwarts, and Evelynn's loyalties lay with her own. She could only hope that there would be those among the crowd tomorrow when she played with as much enthusiasm.

On the other hand, the choice of words and the subject of that praise were less favourable. She huffed internally. It really did seem to be that somehow those with whom she had managed to form rocky relationships seemed well adored by their peers. First D'Spacito. Now Gray. The way they somehow managed to collect admirers and friends when all evidence that she had been given depicted really rather rubbish personalities never failed to bewilder her. And from one Martin, too... The girl was a clever one, always performing at the top tier of their class when it came to potions. Then again, she was also close to Lestrange as well.. Perhaps there was something to b—

Eye contact. Bother. She'd been caught. At the call of her name, Evelynn offered a polite smile and lifted her fingers for a casually airy wave. "Of course," she replied as though there were no question about showing support. Really, there wasn't. She made an effort to attend every duelling match that she was able (Even if her writer failed to actually follow through with that), and wasn't about to stop now. "I wouldn't miss it. I'm looking forward to seeing how this team performs.

"Plus.."
She shrugged a brow, reverting her attention to the foreign team with a rueful purse of her lips. "...I wouldn't mind seeing him—" She nudged her chin in the direction of the large ruffian looking foreigner. "—put in his place. He was rather obnoxiously loud during the trials at the Blossom Ball. I can't imagine this match is going to be anything but an absolute display." Then, waving an open palm to the nearby seat added, "Care to join me?"

“Sure, I should still be able to get some great shots of our team from here.” Santario would take her place next to Evelynn, a smirk forming on her lips. “You missed it then. I sent him flying to the ground in one shot at that ball. Pretty sure the grounds still have his butt print from how hard he landed.” She was well aware that she was sitting next to a prefect, but she doubted Evelynn would do anything about it, considering the seemingly shared distaste for the boy and the length of time it had been since. “And it was provoked. Came in flying out of nowhere trying to punch someone in the face.” Naturally, San left out that, that someone had been Vladimir even though Vlad actually had not been doing anything wrong.

“I can not say that I actually pay attention to the crowd when I am in a duel, so I guess I would not know who our active supporters are. Do not get me wrong it is not that I do not care, but well one wrong move, and you are out.” Considering Evelynn played on the quidditch team, she was sure the girl understood more than ever. After all, getting distracted while mid-flight would be more dangerous, in San’s opinion.

The camera would again move to her face making its telltale clicking noises that signaled the shutter opening and closing. She waited for the duel to begin wanting to get some shots of the beginning casting, considering this was the first duel she actually got to watch, but she would still be giving Evelynn her attention.

With so much activities going on during Summer Camp, Cash forgot that the most exciting event happen today. If not because of the bubbly blonde Cash known as Starlee, the soon to be third year probably will forgot about today event. As usual, Cash done their morning workouts. Though they joined Summer Camp, does not mean they will forgo their daily regime.

Breakfast and Lunch had been done. The green eyes had sometimes before dinner rolled in. Their intial plan is to take a nap but that plan was dismished as Starlee voice heard - more like - screamed the Cuban descendant name. "Qué pasa (what's up), Star?"Cash inquired one of their best friend as they opened their cabin door.

The blonde bounced on the ball of their feet. Cash looked at her curiously. Then suddenly Starlee grabbed their hand and dragged them. "Come on, Cash!"The soon to be second year dragged the former purple haired excitedly. Usually Cash will swatted people hands that try to touch or manhandled them but this is Starlee.

And for whatever reason that Cash still unknown for it, the Beater always has a soft spot for the sunshine personified. "Where are we going?"Cash asked the person that dragged them around. It seems their question got drown by Starlee's next statement. "You promised me that you always watch me when I am duelling"Starlee expressed still dragging Cash until the pair arrived at the Chess Combat area.

The green eyes looked at the blonde confused. They never uttered such thing. "No, I did not. I never said such thing like that"Reply Cash shortly and again their words fell to deaf ears as Starlee finally let go of the Cuban descendant hand and walked towards where her other teams mates stood. Cash saw Hanako Tone, Percival Gray, Piper Clark, and Opeila Winters on the otherside of the 'chess board'.

The young Ironwoods met Piper before during Pei's infamous Dorm Battle. Cash and Tone relationship are weird since they pretty much have this kind of passive - aggresive kind of relationship. At least that what Cash thought about whatever going on between them and Tone. And for Gray, the green eyes know next to nothing about the boy except he is one of the new Prefect for Slytherin.

From where Cash stood, it seems Piper and Starlee did not get along that well and Piper seems said something to Starlee that Cash could not hear from where they were situated. The young socialite cupped their hands around their mouth to amplified their voice. "Good luck, guys!"That goes for Opeila, Percival, and Piper.

"Take a deep breath and just focus, Estrella (Star). You can do it! I believe in you. So you got to believe in yourself too"Cash expressed to pumped Starlee up. Their green eyes then narrowed to Tone. "Try not to messed this up for them, Hobbit"The green eyes holler to the creep. Cash never saw Hanako in action before, so they do not know his expertise at spellcasting.

If his spellcasting was anything like he did during that blizzard experiment errand a year ago where Cash, Hanako and the other twoo partook then the other four need a miracle. "Do not messed it up for them you hear me, Midget?"They exclaimed. "If you messed it up, I will end you! It is not a threat, it is a promise"Cash zeroed in their green eyes at Hanako to looked more intimidating.
Permission to godmod had been given by the eager golden labrador puppy Starlee

There were Duels! And Quidditch games! And the broom race!
While Theodore knew that he would be racing again this summer, he had not quite expected so many sports events to happen. His own would be in a week, on the 21st, the two others were happening today and tomorrow. He didn't feel quite motivated enough to watch all of them, but when he saw the list of participants, he knew that there were at least two duels he needed to watch.

In fact he felt a little bad when he only now realized that his friend Karilyna would be fighting in one of them. He had never asked either of his friends what they were doing. Everett he knew was going to be in the race with him, and Phyllis was a racer too, but he had never asked K what she had signed up for.

But Theo had been watching her duel and cheered her on earlier, that cleared his conscious a little. This duel he was not watching because of a classmate, but because he had spotted another name on the list, that made his heart skip a beat. He had been fighting the girl in a chess combat last year and was eager to see if she was still as good as back then.

In this duel he didn't cheer. He was a silent spectator, watching as she dodged a Hogwarts girl's spells time and time again, while the girl seemed to get more annoyed by the moment. If this was earned to her bad aiming or Greta's good dodging was not clear to him just yet.
Chuckling, he leaned back. Looked like Greta would be fine.

"Did you really?" Evelynn wondered, brow flaring with an amused tug at the corner of her mouth. A breathy chuckle thrummed warmly in her throat at the notion. What she would have given to have seen the spectacle of the loud-mouthed Durmstrang boy put into his place by the viper.

All the more-so given that it was delivered in sweet retribution of whatever aggressive antics he'd attempted to administer. It reminded her of another hot-headed imbecile who deserved the very same. Her thoughts turned inward as they veered in his direction. Something about the Blossom Ball in conjunction with D'Spacito had raised a… something. They circled each other as like-poled magnets in a void might. Her mind wanted to shove them together, but something kept them apart, yet she couldn't shake the feeling that she had touched on a recollection that sat irritatingly on the tip of her tongue.

The Slytherin's continued reply pulled the redhead from her musings, and she was able to check in soon enough to make sense of it. "No, I do understand," she acknowledged with a nod, adjusting herself in her seat, one hand moving to idly smooth down her skirt along one leg. "It is quite the same with Quidditch. As much as I regret to say it, I really only make out individuals at the conclusion of a game. Beforehand, I'm a touch preoccupied running through the strategies; and in the midst of it all, focus is essential lest you miss your opportunity to catch the snitch or allow a bludger or player to happen upon you."

As the familiar clicking of the camera began, Evelynn flicked her gaze briefly towards the implement. The photographer's profile conjured notions of curiosity about all that the girl had seen behind that lens. How much photo evidence existed among her belongings—or others if they'd been given away—that might shed light and evidence upon the various happenings without her having even realized at the time. A face in the background to provide an alibi; the presence of another who ought not be there; the capture of odd behaviour or strange objects…How badly she wished she could sift through and inspect them all some time.

But later. The duel was to commence, and Evelynn had her priorities. Pen in hand, she prepared her parchment, intent to take precise notes on the spells, movement and general ability of the various participants. Tips for her own House's team that she might pass along when next they faced Slytherin.. Inspiration for her own learning and use of spells that she might not have previously considered. There was much to be learned. And this match certainly proved captivating.

Right from the start, both teams adjusted their positioning, spells flying. Seilun and Gray were the two priority targets of Evelynn's attention, and each of them seemed intent on working together to take down one of the foreign girls. Why, was beyond Evelynn. There seemed to be nothing remarkable about the girl. In fact, she was rather small, her attire—a patchwork dress with too many pockets, several holes, and frayed hem—more akin to a beggar than what Evelynn might have expected of a foreign representative.

It wouldn't be long before she understood, however. Granted, right as the match had started, Gray had sent forward an acceptable—she wasn't about to praise him for his spell work—Knockback Jinx. The rook opposite him had done the same for his respective targets. A good dent in the opposing team that she had met with a nod of approval. Unfortunately, the opposing queen seemed to be a bit more aggressive, taking her turn to attack Clark instead of moving defensively and doling out a rather frightening plume of flame. It was a trend that would continue.

Gray's initial advantage was soon lost. He'd drawn first blood, but after that, the girl seemed to become untouchable. Spell after spell would be slung towards her by Gray and Seilun, some spells with more care and precision than others. It didn't seem to matter, though. Nothing stuck. She advanced slowly, and returned fire quite literally, leaving Evelynn wincing, lips drawn in over her teeth and pressed together in morbid anticipation. While a part of her drew satisfaction in seeing Gray put in his place, she drew no pleasure in the manner in which it occurred. Fire was friend to no one, and combustion was a terribly painful way to meet defeat.

"Why aren't they putting him out.." Her lamentation would be heard quietly uttered on more than one occasion as he and his teammates let the flame burn hot for too long, in her opinion. It wouldn't be until later that finally Kennedy would see to provide him some relief. "Far past time…" But even then, it only sated the flames a bit, and they were left to die out on their own. And by then, it was too late, she could tell. The fight had burned out of him. He'd become a shell. It… bothered her to see him like that, a shadow of the arrogance and pride with which he usually projected himself. It wasn't Gray out there. It was a Wight. And when his listless form inevitably collapsed, she found herself torn.

"Seilun!" Evelynn projected, ire kindled towards this foreign adversary for spoiling Gray's image. "Carry his pride upon your shoulders and make them see their folly!"

Then quietly so only she and those nearest to her would hear.. "They will need a miracle to recover from that loss. Tone is doing well and could very likely take out the opponent's male rook, but not likely before the four of them hone in on Kennedy. I'll admit… The loud-mouth ox—" She was referring to the boy, Yefim. "—is a might bit more skilled than I might have given him credit. It's a bit unnerving as well… the way he is standing there quietly now. I wasn't aware he could go more than a few seconds without shouting his own praises."

Santario laughed softly with a nod at Evelynn’s inquiry. Watching that barbarian flying backward onto his arse was the highlight of that whole night. Which was undoubtedly saying something because that entire night for her had been nothing but a ball of chaos, panic, and confusion. Parts of it still had her head reeling from it all as she tried to make the puzzle pieces stick together.

Santario would offer a nod as the lioness spoke about quidditch, and while Santario had never flown in an official game, she had been on the team long enough to know exactly what she was talking about there as well. “I have plenty of pictures of you playing. I should send you some after school starts.” San mentioned offhandedly as she snapped photos of the duel, though it would not take long before her jaw clenched and her camera was slowly lowered to her lap. Her eyes were on the fire that now burned Percival. Santario knew the pain that engulfed him; she had been there herself before. “Sometimes it is a better strategy to take the pain instead of waste your time putting them out, but that is usually better in two versus two and only under certain circumstances.”

The more she watched, the more she wanted to leave, and she wasn’t even certain why. What she was sure of was that watching Percival take this kind of damage made her want to break the rules and step in, but that would get them all disqualified. So the Slytherin sat there, body stiff, unable to look away. Though her eyes started to scan the field rapidly, running strategy after strategy through her head, there was no way around it. They were going to finish him off just as she would do if she were in their situation, but it was different when it was a friend. Her right hand reached up to grasp the white rose locket that hung around her neck as she bit her cheek while two knockback jinxes crashed into him.

Percival had fallen, and Santario knew right then and there that she would try and talk him out of joining duelling. He was on their waitlist, which is why he was here today; they had needed the extra bodies to make the three games, but this had only solidified that she did not want to see him in this situation ever again. Evelynn’s voice pulled her back, and she gave a resolute nod. “You are correct.” She whispered back before nodding at the more petite girl, Greta. “After having missed her so many times, they should have switched opponents. Taking out a powerhouse is great, but there are easier targets in that lineup. Even if not by much, it is something.” Santario motioned towards the boys. “They are not nearly as nimble as the girls are. I would have shifted my focus onto them earlier.”
