"Liquids are evil,"

Finally words were spoken by Ruka and Kaz snorted. "Liquids?" He replied with amusement. "Well, now I know why my Dad always takes the next day off after going to business dinners." He murmured as he waited for Ruka to get dressed. When Ruka grabbed his hand, a hint if a smile banished some of the grumpiness he was feeling, reminding him of the fun they had last night. He wasn't entirely sure it was worth the pain he was suffering as the sun seemed intent on stabbing his brain through his eyes but he wouldn't have traded it for anything.

There was something very special about the way Ruka had opened up to him last night, about the conversations they had shared late into the evening. He had earned Ruka's trust somehow, unbelievably, despite wasabi nuts and tickle attacks. It was equal parts exhilarating and terrifying - exhilarating to have been able to win him over despite his dislike and general distrust of people and terrifying because that trust meant something to him. He was growing attached, bot something he had intended to do when he and Ruka had first met.

Deep thoughts and hangover headaches did not go well together.

As Ruka dragged him toward one of the many picnic baskets that had been laid out for the students, his stomach made a growling noise at the suggestion of food and he couldn't help but to agree with Ruka's decision. He gazed at the lake as they walked, content to let Ruka guide him as he studied the students who had shown up to the lake party. He recognized a few faces, some Hogwarts, some from other schools, but also noted the presence of what looked like younger students. Soon-to-be firsties had been invited to the summer camp.

"You live on an island but you can't swim well?" He asked as Ruka stole his sunglasses. He groaned at the sharp brightness as he settled down onto the blanket beside Ruka. "Get your own sunglasses!" He complained as he attempted half-heartedly to reclaim them, ending up stealing Ruka's hat instead. He gave Ruka a long, confused look at his suggestion on how to divide the food.

"What. That makes no sense. Why do you want all the bread? Is there any fruit?" He leaned forward to peer into the basket, snatching up an orange and starting to peel it. "If you're not a good swimmer, I guess that diving platform is out…" His gaze returned to the lake and he noted how many students had crowded around the platform. "I wonder how they're keeping the squid from joining in the party?"

"Hardly a disappointment," Evelynn replied off hand, waving a hand dismissively at the notion. "And it's a rare gift. Truly, there are only a handful of students at the school capable of such visions." She knew only of three, herself. "And I doubt it would have helped you much," she chuckled, trailing off to allow him to continue.

As he spoke, she provided him her full attention. The only time her gaze deviated from his eyes was to dip briefly for her plate, just long enough to retrieve one of the sandwich corners, before lifting again. She nibbled during his lamentation, each bite followed by a brief brush of her napkin against her lips to dust off any unwanted crumbs before hovering in front of them. As though the image of her chewing was somehow obscene even though her lips remained closed, no obnoxious chewing sound was made, and really, there wasn't anything out of the ordinary at all about the way she ate. Just an odd habit she'd picked up from her mother that snuck out on the odd occasion.

Muffled laughter punctuated the conclusion of his consternation, low and brief, spanning only a second or two. How she could relate. In many ways, it was as though she were sitting next to a projection of herself two years ago. A different appearance, and state of dress, perhaps, but of the same frustrations and pattern of thought. She couldn't blame him. The culture shock for a muggle coming into the wizarding world was unlike anything else. It was something she still struggled with from time to time when she lost sight of what it was that kept her moving forward through the paces from day to day. It really was madness. And this was only the beginning.

"You will come to adjust," she replied gently, patting her lips and lowering the napkin-holding hand to her lap. "In some ways it is rather head-spinning, this idea of children like us running about with wands and the power to light fires or cause mayhem. But that is the norm here. Could you imagine someone not native to modern culture seeing children racing about with slingshots, darts, drones, and the like…They might think what we find quite usual to be entirely barmy."

Fingers dropped to her plate, pads rolling a raspberry absently about while she continued. "I think the important thing to keep in mind is that regardless of whether you find this world agreeable or not, it is here. Returning home won't change the fact that wixen and magical creatures exist. And with that in mind, as unconventional as this school might appear to be at time—most times—the spells you learn and education you receive will give you the resources to protect yourself and those you care about. Once you come to terms with your reservations…" She shrugged a brow and plucked up one of the berries before slipping it betwixt her lips. "…You might even come to enjoy your time here."

A small burst of laughter from the upperclassman brought Chinese boy to pause. In the stead of commenting though, he took a small bite of his sandwich - his first. He had been quietly waiting for the senior to start in on her food as a signal that it was acceptable for him to dig in, and gratefully used the excuse of food spare himself a reaction.

It was fortunate, as the ginger brought up a comparison. Hui Ming chewed on the words for a moment, to really take them in. It was very...reasonable when put in that way. Not sane, of course, but then children controlling drones was probably also not very sane. The point about general safety was also put well, and aligned rather closely with the views held by his own family.

The Chinese boy put down his half-eaten sandwich with a small sigh. "Very empathetic of you. I thank you, Miss," he said very slowly, blowing over her comment that he might learn to enjoy himself here, were he lucky. "And what you say does make sense."

She was right, after all. His thoughts and feelings did not come into the issue. It did not matter that he was all but forced into this world. Hogwarts was not compulsory after all, merely only magical school in Britain. It did not matter how unfair it was, that he was promised that he would be among those like him, but found himself more isolated and alone amongst these brutish children. No. That did not matter.

What did matter was that he was in a new world where he would have to prove himself against standards that he didn't quite understand. What mattered was that there were those that wanted him in this world even less than he himself did. And these people would not balk at the idea of hurting him or his. He furrowed his brows when he realized that this idea had actually been vocalized. He had assumed, much like the proverbial 'racist white uncle' in the Muggle world, that such concepts would be politely ignored; swept under the carpet, much like so much else was in polite company.

"I find myself confused." He decided to address the topic now that it was brought up. He placed his hands on his knees, his attention completely upon the senior. "I had not realized that the responsibility of social protection fell upon the individual members of this society." Of course they did. They were newcomers. Immigrants. They had no say in the institutions and power structures of this society. "Surely if there are rules and laws, there must be those that are there to ensure its enforcement?"

He looked back at her then. His grey eyes meeting hers in a silent challenge. "Or am I mistaken?"

Time: Afternoon
So, apparently Kazuo had at least been dimly aware of the side effects they would be faced with come morning, but Ruka didn't think it would have made much of a difference for him whether he had known about hangovers or not. He'd had too much fun, a great end to an otherwise unspectacular birthday. He didn't think he would have changed anything about it. "Next time we share one bottle," he decided anyway as he held onto Kazuo's hand like it was some sort of lifeline. Next time. Like he had already decided that they were going to have a repeat of that previous night. They would have, if Ruka had anything to say about it. Safe for that hangover, of course.

He hummed his approval at Kazuo's willingness to let him lead the way to one of the picnic baskets, pulling a face when confronted about his lacking swimming skills. "I never needed to learn," he pointed out with a small shrug. Swimming just hadn't been essential; It wasn't like he had grown up near a lake or other waters. Ponds, maybe, but none of them deep enough to require him to learn how to keep himself afloat. "Jack taught me last summer, but I'm not exactly practiced." He grinned, but let his face go slack again when he realised the change in his expression was giving him more of a headache.

Trying his best to dodge Kazuo's attempt at getting his glasses back, Ruka waved his hands through the air with a light chuckle in order to shield his face. It meant giving up his hat, but Ruka had to admit it suited the other boy better than it did him anyway. Slowly, he reached out and adjusted the hat on Kazuo's head with a fond glint in his eyes. "Meow," he purred. "Looks good on you." Grinning, he pushed his new sunglasses further up the bridge of his nose before dedicating his attention to the food basket. "I like bread. Cheese, I can go without," he explained simply with a small shrug as he pulled out a slice of bread, immediately starting to pull off the crust and kneading the soft part in his hand to form a ball with it.

Taking a bite, Ruka let his gaze drift to the diving platform Kazuo had mentioned, humming thoughtfully. "I'll jump if you take full responsibility should I drown," he offered with a lop-sided grin. "Must be some kind of barrier set up, right? I wouldn't trust the squid around all those kids." The bloodthirsty thing would have probably eaten some of them by now. Actually, maybe that wouldn't have been the worst thing in the world, would it? Ruka shook his head off that thought but stopped when it reawakened his headache. Instead he let his gaze drift across the lake again, tilting his head to the side as he took in his surroundings. Finishing the last piece of his bread, Ruka pushed himself up into a standing position again. "I'll be right back," he decided with a grin, offering Kazuo a quick wave before he trotted off into the direction of where he had seen some students show up with all sorts of inflatables.

It didn't take too long to find the equipment shed, and with it the various kinds of things one could use in the lake. He found one that grabbed his attention almost immediately - The thing was bigger than him, but it had a convenient handle to drag it around, even if that meant knocking over some people's drinks and baskets, and bumping into multiple students on his way back to Kazuo. "Can't drown with this," he pointed out with a grin as he dropped the large angel float on the grass next to their blanket. "And if the squid and grindylow somehow break through that barrier they'll hopefully go for the smaller looking humans in the water first."

This summer had already been going much differently from how Jake had expected. First, they hadn't even been able to pick their own cabins. Secondly, he found that his assumption that everybody who had been at camp last year would be there this year had turned out to be not true at all. It had seemed like it might have the recipe for disaster...but luckily, Jake had Jack, one of his best friends, sharing a bunk bed with him in kelpie cabin. He didn't know WHAT he would have done if they had ended up in different bunks.

The worst part of all of it was having to share a cabin with Howard...Jake stayed far, far away from him, which is why he didn't stick around the cabin when he didn't have to. The other worst part of it was that his other best friend, George, hadn't come to camp this year. Having fewer friends at camp had turned out to be a bit of a downer, because Jack was a lot more active than Jake was, and sometimes Jake found that he was just gone.

Today was one of those days where Jake was outside on his own - but the bright sun illuminated a happy summer afternoon, with music playing. The Hufflepuff had heard there was going to be a lake party today. He had never really done much swimming in a lake, preferring to swim in pools which were much less deep and a much more controlled environment - He usually didn't like being amongst so many other kids either, especially without familiar faces to surround himself with. But for whatever reason the bright day lifted his spirits, and the boy put on his bathing suit, got his towel, and walked along the lakeside.

To make things even better, he soon found that the summer wasn't entirely without familiar faces.

"Ruka! Kaz!" Jake waved, hurrying up to the two boys he hadn't seen since school's end, and wrapping his arms around them in greeting. While in between them in age, Jake was the smallest of the three boys, which was lucky for them, since he'd lost a bit of control of his own momentum on the hug, turning it into a bit of a flop. "Sorry," he mumbled sheepishly, rolling over the floatie that Ruka had dropped onto their blanket, and sitting in front of them as gracefully as he could manage.

"Hi guys! So you came to camp too? I musta missed you on the first day. I'm in the Kelpie cabin... how 'bout you?" The excitement of seeing his friends for the first time in over a month had Jake feeling especially excitable and it didn't take him too long to get over his slight failure of an entrance.

The other two had sunglasses to protect them from the summer sun, which was smart Jake thought, because it'd been quite bright out. He didn't have any such protection against the sun, just a generous amount of sunscreen, which he'd had one of his cabinmates help him apply.

"Can I share your blanket...?" he asked, realizing he had better check if he was welcome. "Ya know I've never swam in a lake before, just a pool."

Selina looked around and saw the boy that had said;
No point crying over spilt milk!
Selina scowled at the boy as she was only trying to help the girl and nobody knew that she was dating the girl her name was Paige Grant.

She loved Paige with all her heart, and was sort of hoping to swim with her as well. She didn't dare tell Milosh as she wanted to swim with Milosh as well but she was secretly hoping to swim with the both of them.

"Well, Milosh do you want to go in or is there something else you want to do before?" Selina asked Milosh really wanting to get into the water.

Milosh was someone that Selina wanted to hang out with and she hoped Milosh like hanging out with her too. She loved hanging out with people and making new friends, and she felt like her and Milosh had become friends.

"May I call you Milo? It's ok if you don't want me to just like a nickname." Selina said hoping he would say yes but it would be ok if he said no as well.

Milo was just a short name or a nickname for short type thing basically.

Milo raised his brows as the girl, Selina had began to stare off into the distance. Head in the clouds there? Or perhaps eyeing a certain someone? He'd bump the girl's shoulders as a small knowing smile appeared on his lips. Before she could retort he'd push himself off the ground and stretch his arms above his head, shoulders popping. She had helped him with sunscreen and his towel and shoes were already off and set down away from the waters edge. "Nah I have nothing better in mind, I'm ready let's go swim."

With that he'd jog over to the water and splash in, possibly spraying a few people in the process. When he emerged at the surface he threw his wet curls behind him which had become darker, and slicked back against his head. He shook his head to the side, trying to get some water out of his ear before responding to her question. "Yeah Milo is fine, Milosh is too formal. I suppose a lot of people have nicknames or just don't like their given name. Do you have one I can call you or is Selina fine?" He tested her name with his accent, having not said it before, her name being more drawn out and the e sounding more like an a. He'd have to work on his accent but it had approved a lot over the years. Speaking fluent sentences with more complex words or ideas were easier now.

Milo would splash a few small waves at the girl, playfully encouraging her to come join him in the lake while it was still warm out.

At the admission to his confusion, Evelynn paused mid-way to bringing her sandwich for another bit and shifted her gaze to the young Hui. Hands gradually settling to her lap like snowflakes to a fresh embankment, she tilted her head just slightly in curiosity and settled in to hear him out. Almost immediately, however, a brow flared with the quirking corner of her lips.

"I think you might be in part, yes," she replied when he'd concluded, seeking confirmation. "There are, of course, rules and laws. Both in the greater wizarding society and within the confines of the school itself. The British Ministry of Magic ensures that order is assured and laws followed. For example, an underage witch or wizard—all of us who have yet to reach our seventeenth nameday, that is—is not permitted to use magic outside of school. They place something called a "trace" upon you that detects if you have. Failure to comply can result in expulsion from school; or worse, depending on what it is that you did.

"And at Hogwarts, we have our own set of rules as well. You may not duel beyond the supervision of the Duelling Club; you must return to your House common room by eight in the evening, and be within your own dorm by ten; the Forbidden Forest is off limits; you may not swim in the Great Lake without supervision of a staff member; no fighting; etcetera." Evelynn, having been idly waving her hand as she listed off various school rules from the top of her head, flourished her fingers to a close when she'd decided enough examples had been provided. "It is the responsibility of prefects, such as myself, to ensure those school rules are upheld, re-educating the ignorant and administering punitive correction to the belligerent as needed.

"This, of course, includes maintaining social peace. But..." She shrugged a brow and pursed her lips, the subtlety of her expression perhaps hinting at a deeper irritation to the keen eye. "...we are not omnipresent and cannot always be relied upon to be available when needed. Unfortunately, there are those who—just as in the muggle realm—are more than keen to take advantage of a lapse in supervision to harass those they deem unworthy or administer their own twisted sense of justice for an ill-perceived sleight. So...while I don't agree with it...it's better for yourself to err on the side of caution."

Xeno was smiling, unlike he had been seen doing throughout the majority of camp. Afterall, he thought it had been alright so far, yet he had been angered by the fact so many people were getting in his way, he really wasn't the kind of person to enjoy crowds. And on top of that a few more things were upsetting him, but those were things he wouldnt usually talk to people about. He would nod at charles, as they would continue their walk, making small talk as they went.

Soon enough the talking ended, a question now coming from charles, about how Xeno had liked the camp "oh uh.. its alright i suppose truthfully im just upset i didnt get the same cabin as my bestie" he said, scanning around in search of his friend, who once again was nowhere in sight. A sigh escaped him, maybe Winter was ditching him? He tossed the negative thoughts out of the window, he knew deep down she would never! She had probably just slept in or something, that had always been normal behavior for her anyways.

The entire time the two boys were walking, Xeno noticed something about Charles. Something of oddity, he felt as though his friend was anxious, maybe he could even say nervous. They would soon arrive in the food area, where a few food stands, and trucks had been placed , the menus crowded with foods of many kinds. He looked at Charles, his attention wandering for a bit before snapping back to reality when a question shot towards Xeno. "O-Oh uhm i think i may just get a burger or something-" he said, going to continue when he felt the tension once more, charles seemed to not focus from the food. "Haha silly me i forgot to compliment you! I wanted to say this earlier, you look great today Charles!" Xeno once more exclaimed, hoping to boost his cabin mates mood. A smile came over Xenos face, his head tilting a bit as he asked in a sweet tone

"So what are you gunna order?"

Charles smiled, it wasn't a half grin or a fake one either that the blonde has been putting on at the camp. It was a actual smile, one that told others he was happy to be there and was enjoying himself.

Charles smiled while looking at Xeno, it was almost like he couldn't take his eyes or mind off of the boy. The blonde saw something in the boy and was attracted to it, he liked it and wanted to spend all his time with him.

Charles thought about going back in the water, about jumping in or splashing around the lake water with the others. About engaging in a bicker water water with Nikita or doing that race with Scarlett or bothering Arjan with either words or actions. But when he thought about those things, he was distracted. Distracted by Xeno.

Walking besides him, smiling and gazing at him as he nodded toward the boy's words before replying"apologies you didn't get in the same cabin with your best friend," Charles smiled toward him before looking ahead and a bit down as he spoke" o didn't get in a cabin with my uh best friends either but I'm happy with my cabin mates now," Charles would look over at Xeno and smile a little, the blond was certainly glad that they shared the same cabin.

Arriving at the food area where the muggle truck was at, Charles would look over Xeno's shoulder at the menu reading it over at he took glances at Xeno still smiling.

"Thanks, you look amazing today to, Xeno," Charles replied smiling toward Xeno and forgetting where he was at and what he was doing, the blonde only had eyes for his crush and opened his mouth to tell him this but then heard Xeno's voice.

Shaking his head a little as he spoke" a burger as well," Charles smiled toward Xeno and noticed he probably looked like a idiot a few moments ago with his mouth hanging open so he quickly spoke" Do you perfer English or french to talk in?"
