A Whole New World
Dylan remembers last year, the first time his mother let him follow his sister through the brick barrier at Platform 9 3/4, his eyes glistening and gleaming as the grand express stood before him, the steam and smoke billowing out like a canvas for all his magical fantasies about to be painted on.
”You’re really sure I can’t sneak on in your luggage?” he asked with hopeful eyes and and a held breath.
”It’s only one more year to wait, you’ll be here in no time” she responded with a laugh, ruffling his hair, ”Be good to Mum while I’m gone, I love you.”
”Love you too”, he calls back, slightly dejected, the steam rolling away like his magical dreams, ”One more year”.
That year could not have gone by any slower, but now, wand in hand and cloak wrapped tightly, he runs through the platform, almost losing his luggage as he jumps onto the train. Panting heavily, and dragging his bags through the corridor, pushing through waves of students, owls and cats nipping him out of annoyance, he collapses down into the first empty cabin.
As the calm English fields begin to roll past, the green hills the first splash of colour on his future’s canvas, Dylan sits awkwardly, wishing someone would join him to help drown out the silence.

Fay had been with her parents up until the barrier at Platform 9 ¾. It was then, she had bid them farewell, as they couldn’t pass through to the other side due to them being non-magical. She felt a bit sad seeing many other kids her age, and some older, standing on the platform, talking, laughing, having a good time with their families before the train departed. She sighed, wishing her parents could have been there too.
Not wanting to dwell on the thought any longer, she dragged her trunk up and onto the train, letting her eyes catch glimpses of the scenery around her. The interior of the train was beautiful. She wished at that moment she could have taken a picture to show her parents, she’s sure they would have loved it. What she would love even more is if there was a way she could show her parents all that she was seeing in this magical world.
She started walking, looking to find either an empty compartment or someone with a friendly face, that perhaps she could even become friends with. She smiled, she hoped that she could make a friend before getting to school, it would make things a bit easier, if she knew someone already.
She felt movement and stumbled from her walk, the train must have already started moving. She hurried as fast as she could to find what she sought, when at last, she saw a boy about her age sitting alone in a compartment. Taking a deep breath, she knocked on the door, wondering what he would say.

A Whole New World
Dylan was somewhere between fantasising about his future at Hogwarts and dozing off, the warm countryside sun pushing him towards the latter, not too long after the Hogwarts Express had started its journey. The various treats and cakes his mum and sister sneaked him before his journey providing all the comfort the young boy needed.
He supposed he would have dozed off if not for the million thoughts racing through his head, the largest one being the most worrying to the young wizard.
‘I hope I make some friends soon.
It had seemed like people already formed their groups, as far as Dylan could judge from the overheard conversations about topics he could half follow from a random owl or two his sister had sent. He fiddled with his trunk to distract from the thoughts.
Reaching for another chocolate frog, Dylan could have almost dozed off again if not, this time, for a slight knock at his compartment door. Becoming immediately all too aware of the mess his hair would be in and the chocolate on his face, he looked up into the eyes of the girl now standing in front of him, flashing a hopeful smile.
”Oh hi! Do you need help with anything?” he started quickly with what he later feared was too much enthusiasm, before eyeing the trunk in her hand, ”You’re welcome to sit here, if you’d like that is.”
Holding up some chocolate like a tree branch he continued ”I’m Dylan by the way! I’m a first year.”

Fay’s eyes widened when she saw the boy had a chocolate frog. She loved chocolate, her favorite flavor of the food was milk as she found the dark chocolate too bitter for her taste buds. She made a face at the remembrance of how it made her feel, when she had the misfortune of having it. She had been about seven when she had been introduced to the candy shop, courtesy of her parents. Her eyes had fallen onto the piles of wrapped chocolate bars by the register, as her parents were being ringed out for their own purchases. She begged her mom and dad to get them all to try. She remembered mustering the best pouting face she could and they had given in to her demands to her delight. Thinking back, she wished she hadn’t due to the surprising bitter taste one of the chocolates gave her. It was so bad she had scrubbed her tongue which ended up doing no good.
Right after she tasted the dark she tried the white chocolate and it just didn’t taste the same as milk, don’t get her wrong, it was good but it couldn’t compare to milk chocolate. Then again, perhaps that’s the case because her taste buds were so accustomed to sugar from how much she enjoys sweets. That had to be it, she could think of no other reason. Another thing she didn’t like was when there were crunchy foods, such as nuts in chocolate. That made it hard to chew, she wasn’t a fan of that.
She was brought back from the depths of her mind due to the boy speaking to her. She blinked, trying to remember what he said. Something about wanting her to sit with him. She gasped and her head jerked up to look at him. She thought she was hearing things, someone actually wanted her to sit with them on the train to Hogwarts? She was in utter shock when she saw he was extending a chocolate frog to her and had told her his name.
“Nice to meet you, Dylan. My name is Fay, Fay Fitzgerald. Oh, you’re a first year? I am too! What house do you think you’ll be in? I had no idea about Hogwarts until the day I got my letter! My parents were so surprised but I think they were a bit relieved at the same time, you see, I think, me being magical was starting to scare them so they’re glad I can come here to learn more about magic and how to control it.”

A Whole New World
Dylan paused, his body frozen, as he waited for the girl’s response, worried that she wouldn’t want to sit with him or that he had somehow weirded her out. Still, his smile persisted, widening slightly when she turned to face him, his shoulders finally relaxing when she started speaking.
Losing focus slightly as his brain worked overtime to commit Fay’s name to memory, made harder by the happiness he felt that he wouldn’t be sitting through this train ride alone, the relief so heavy that he almost missed the questions Fay had posed.
”My house?” he thought aloud, the four colours splashing over the canvas of his thoughts. “Well, they all seem really cool but, I think Hufflepuff is the one for me!”
He remembers the owl he got when his sister was sorted, the paragraphs about their common room, midnight trips to the kitchens, the kindness she had faced from the older years, Dylan longed more than anything to join his sister there.
Continuing the conversation, Dylan exclaimed “Oh I was raised in the muggle world too! So much of this stuff is weird to me, but what magic are you looking forward to learning?” Dylan leaned forward excitedly, the chocolate frog leaping out of his hand, and jumping straight towards the unsuspecting Fay.
