Susan had heard about the lake from her brother. She wanted to see it for herself. As she went down the hill she saw the sun glistening off of the water. “So pretty. I wish we could swim safely in the water without being attacked.” she says to herself as she wondered if there was a way to do that. Stopping at a tree nearby, she caught her breath. Being only a first year she didn’t know if she was allowed in the water.

She walked to the next tree and looked around for any other students or a Professor. Stopping a few feet from the water she sits under the tree and just stares at the water. She sighed before singing various folk songs and ancient ballads from her homeland of Scotland.

As she sang she picked up stones and tossed them into the water, as she began skipping rocks. She used to skip rocks with her brother down by the creek while on vacation during summer. She missed when they were little and used to hang out more. Now that they were both here at Hogwarts in a new world, she knew that he would make his own friends and forget about her. Would she ever make any friends?

[Font="Book Antiqua"]The first weekend of the term came as a blessed relief. It was so many new experiences, and so much change so rapidly, and more times than not he barely held himself together. Even with the summer camp to prepare himself, even knowing that others were going through the same things as he was, it was too much. It was all too much. It felt overwhelming, like he was barely managing to keep his head above water.

From his disastrous little meeting with the Head of House, to all manner of oddities that happened to haunt the halls in the guise of humans. When magic enters the equation, common sense goes out the window. It left Hui Ming feeling off-kilter, teetering on the precipice, barely holding himself upright.

Come weekend, the bespectacled Chinese boy had seized upon the opportunity to flee the confines of the castle. For some distance, for some time to think, for some peace and quiet. He had hoped to enjoy some quiet time with his thoughts by the lake early in the morning before the hellspawn in the guise of his peers decided to emerge and wander.

Given the early hour and lack of prying eyes, the 4'6" Chinese boy had decided to do away with his button-ups, opting instead for a light t-shirt, dark pants and converse shoes. It was terribly informal, of course, but he expected that this would be overlooked by the few souls he might pass by.

His first surprise had been the singing. He heard what was clearly a female voice as he approached the Great Lake. It was a familiar melody, something akin to a half-forgotten sea shanty, but the words were foreign to him.

The merpeople perhaps?

Intrigued and interest piqued, the Slytherin first year went to investigate he singing. And that was when he had his second surprise of the day - the singing had not come from some sort of merfolk or other magical creature, but from one of those that were probably his peers.

She was not much taller than him, and hand long, dark hair. She could be another first year, but he had not seen her around before. Perhaps he had missed her - his interactions with Harrington showed that he was rather careless about those around him. Or perhaps she was some magical creature he had not heard of yet?

A part of him wanted to bring attention to himself, to announce his presence. But he could not bring himself to interrupt the rhythm of the song. He did not want to come across as rude. So he waited quietly, and watched the girl skip rocks across the surface of the water, all the while singing some strange and oddly cheerful song.

It was not the worst experience he had had in the magical world.

As the song came to its the Chinese boy brought his ands together in a slow clap. Once, twice, three times.

"I beg your pardon for intruding, Miss." He spoke up, ever polite. "I could not bear to interrupt the song - I have never heard its like, and you have quite the voice,"

A blink, as he took a step closer to the girl, and then he spoke. His tone of voice was rather formal, as if he were introducing himself in front of a class, with the smoothness of repetition. "I am Hui Ming, first year Slytherin. A pleasure to make your acquaintance."

Susan smiled as she tossed the rock into the water. "Susan Markington, first-year Gryffindor. Nice to meet you, Ming. I hope we can be friends.” Susan said as she looked at him. Handing him a rock she picked up another one and tossed it towards the water. It skipped six times before sinking into the murky depths.

How are you liking Hogwarts so far? Made any friends? Do you have any favorite classes? Who’s your favorite professor so far?” she asked as she tried to get to know him a bit more. She tended to babble when she was nervous. “I really like Transfiguration, Charms, Flying and Potions is sort of like cooking. You know combining ingredients to make something into a potion is sort of like combining ingredients for a recipe.” she said as she smiled and picked up another rock.

Tossing it towards the water she watched it bounce and skip four times before sinking. She wondered who or what was in the water besides the mermaids and giant octopus. She saw a tentacle emerge from the water and her jaw dropped. “So big brother was right. There is a giant octopus or something in the lake.” she said as she waved back before seeing the beast emerge and stare at them. “Sorry about the rocks mister octopus!” she said as she waved.

Hui Ming blinked, taken aback by the sheer energy and enthusiasm of the other girl. She was not particularly refined, but there was an infectious quality to her. An innocence and a sincerity that that he could not help but find endearing.

In spite of all that had happened to him since being introduced to the magical world, or perhaps because of it, Hui Ming chuckled. A small, warm laugh that was very unexpected of the quiet, serious boy that people knew him to be.

But there were no people here, now...

"Whoa there, Miss Marki- Uhm. Susan." Get a grip, Ming. What is wrong with you?"Slow down, no one is going to run away with your words."

The Slytherin spun the stone he was handed absently between his fingers, watching the girl babble about her classes. How did he like it here in Hogwarts? It was certainly different, certainly. But not in all the positive ways that he imagined. People here were less like him than he had hoped and he stood out like a sore thumb; a bastion of formality in the endless sea of rowdy kids. Hearing the girl call the giant squid an octopus brought him back to the present.

"An octopus?" The bespectacled Chinese boy managed between surprised laughter. " Oh my. I suppose that is quite something isn't it?"

He considered the girl in front of him, waving carefree and unworried at the giant squid. It was much closer to what he had imagined this school would be, and he was loathe to take that from her. Perhaps she lucked out, and her House and her experiences here were not the same as his, or Mister Harrington's.

"Well, it has been an experience." he said finally, and not untruthfully. "I enjoy the Potions assignments. I like Transfiguration as well. Professor Atticus has been kind enough to help me with some of my other studies when I approached him about it after class."

He did not mention that Flying terrified him, or his concerns about how he stood out, or about the blood purists. It wouldn't be quite right to share those with a stranger after all.

"What about you, Miss? How has Gryffindor been treating its latest batch of incoming students?" He shot back at her, curious as to what she would say. She seemed to exude energy and positivity. Something he would not mind.

And if he were quite honest with himself. He rather liked the way she talked.

The other first years are nice. I have already made a friend with one of them. Wait….that’s a squid, not an octopus….oops. Sorry, Mister Squid!” she says as she watches it disappear. Turning to Ming she returned under the tree. "So what brings you down here? Bored of walking around the hallways?" she asked as she returned to throwing rocks into the water. She wondered if her brother was behaving or causing mischief. I miss Jack. I hope he is okay. Maybe I should write him a letter and see how he is doing? she thought as she looked into the distance.

"I am bored and coming here helps me feel like I am back in Scotland at the rivers. I just wish we were able to swim safely in the water. It is such a nice day and the weather is perfect for a swim." she says as she frowns and tosses a rock again. She begins to hum the Jacobite song as she picks up more rocks and tosses them towards the water. She watched owls fly in and out of the owlery and smiled. She could not wait to be a second year to join the house Quidditch team.
