Dear Alice,

Thank you so much for writing. I must say, I don't think anyone except perhaps Kingsley expected to hear from you so soon; it took Mary months to write, although I suppose she tends to be more reserved than you in the best of circumstances. I don't much plan to talk about Kingsley in this letter upon his own request. He wanted to owl you his own letter, which will be forthcoming. Expect some art with it as well, he seems quite exuberant about the prospect.

Congratulations on the sorting into Gryffindor. We're all quite happy for you, I know that's what you were hoping for. Gamma is the most excited out of all of us though, but I'm sure that was to be expected. I've not seen my mother quite so giddy in many years. Gryffindor has gained a great person, and perhaps an even better quidditch player. Your uncle Alfred was over when I was reading your letter aloud, and made sure to tell me to mention that your aunt Elspeth was also a Gryffindor when she attended Hogwarts, and that she'd be happy to send you some of her old Gryffindor pride gear, if that would be something you're interested in. Apparently she was quite the rapscallion during her school years. You should owl her, I'm sure she'd love to hear from her niece. Perhaps you could even pay them a visit during the holidays with Mary this year. They've always adored you, you know.

Your mother would like me to remind you that you should be focusing more on your classes than exploring the castle grounds and getting into trouble. She expects nothing less than perfect marks from you. And while I would also be thrilled to see that level of academic achievement from you, I will be quite happy as long as you make the next grade. A challenge for you from your dear old dad, though. Pick a subject each year, one that you like, and try to get perfect marks in that class. Consider it a game! And don't be afraid to ask for help, whether it be from your classmates, your professors, or even one of us at home. We're here to support you, whatever you need.

Thank you so much for writing! I was really excited to hear from you. I told father not to talk about me that much because I wanted to write my own letter. I'm so happy you got into Gryffindor like you wanted. Mother isn't thrilled, though, but I don't think Father wanted to mention that. I think she wanted you to be a Slytherin, but I think you would have been miserable there.
Daniel says hi, by the way (I'm sitting in the garden writing this letter.) He told me to remind you to do your herbology homework, because it's important. I second this. Do it so you can tell me all about it so I can be at the top of my herbology class when I go to Hogwarts! Have you seen Mary at all yet? Probably not, right? If you do, tell her I said hi.
I'm also owling you a drawing to hang up and some more bubblegum with this letter. Try not to get into too much trouble, okay?
