Sizzling in the sun, awaiting @Santario Martin to join the thread

At the first mention of Hogwarts' Summer Camp, Simon dismissed the idea for himself to be part of it. No, instead he would go home and like everyone else enjoy the month of July with family. When others would go back to Hogwarts for some summer fun, he'd remain in London. It wouldn't be a bad thing, he adored his aunt and had many friends there that he could catch up with.

Summer was a favorite season for many. He remembered back in primary school when they had to state what they loved about Summer. Some of the answers were: the longer days, waking up to the morning sun beaming in your room, outdoor cookouts, beach trips, sunbathing, the warm weather, and watching sunsets.

Sun, sun, sun, it was all about the sun. The sun was a wonderful thing - as it allowed for life to exist but yet it was also Simon's enemy. Upon growing up thinking it was a genetic condition that led to an aversion toward the sun, he now knew better thanks to some self discovery and research within the corridors of Hogwarts. His lack of ability to be in the sun for very long wasn't from any genetic condition - unless you considered your father being a vampire one. Genetic condition? No. Genetics? Yes.

Simon knew many of the activities would be outside. He knew that the students had stayed in tents last year. He knew that most everything would be centered around that Summer sun....but the wizarding world was too tempting. He had to go.

So there he had been - participating in the many games of outdoor tag, exploring the landscape, signing up for several of the other activities, and even attending the lake party. It was all quite brilliant but now he was paying the price.

Day after day in the Summer sun had done a toll on him. He had worn sunscreen, he had taken breaks in the shade, and he wore layers of clothing despite the heat. Still, here he was with quite a severe burn that didn't look as bad as it felt. It felt absolutely awful.

He took a cool shower and gently dried off before getting dressed and headed outside. His preference was to stay in the cabin out of the sun's rays for a bit but one of the school elves was in there to clean up. She wanted her peace as she tidied up and changed the sheets and so forth so she shuffled him out. Simon looked up to the bright sun in the sky before he found a table under the shade of some trees. Still somewhat in the sun, but there seemed to be no place better so this would have to do.

Santario sighed as she pulled her hair up, securing it in place with a green wooden helix hair fork. Wispy hair strands, not quite long enough to stay pinned back, fell forward to frame her face. “Too hot.” She complained to herself while emerging from behind the cabins. Shifting her camera bag to her lower back as she walked toward the area where drinks were kept for them, her eyes glanced around, taking in who was where. There were a few undesirable people that she would rather avoid, especially on a day like today when wearing shorts and a tank top did not help to keep her cool enough.

How she longed for the cool breezes and cloudy skies of autumn, but for now, some water and the shade would have to do. One of the only slightly shaded tables available had a lone figure seated at it already, so when she bent down to retrieve a water bottle out of an iced cooler, she grabbed two and made her way over. “May I?” A silvery French-accent voice asked as she motioned to the seat across from him right before setting a bottle down on the table in front of him.

Assuming Simon said yes, or this would be a short thread, Santario would take a seat and crack open her own water bottle taking a drink. “Your skin does not look like it is fairing well.” Concerned crept into her voice and her eyes as she looked him over before starting to rummage through her bag, pulling out two different bottles of sunscreen. One of them was 80 spf, and the other stated 100 spf. The last thing she pulled out was a jar of something homemade.

“The first bottle is for your body, the second for your face. This last one goes on after. Though it will make you smell like night-blooming jasmine, it might offer some relief as it is very hydrating and has a lot of aloe in it. Plus staying hydrated…. Might help.” The jar was a whipped homemade lotion made of aloe, coconut, beeswax, and a few drops of jasmine oil. Santario herself was very fair-skinned and tended to burn quite quickly, so it was safe to say that she always carried something on her during the summer months to help.

Trying to not be so short with @Santario Martin

He was surprised to see someone over his way and he gave her a small smile when she offered up a water to him. "Thanks," he said, watching as she came and sat down next to him before taking a drink. He could tell that she was pretty observant, just in the way she seemed to survey the world around her.

It included details like his skin, his skin that was now far too burnt to even be comfortable. It hurt to put on clothing and it hurt to try and sleep at night. She saw that detail too. He watched as she pulled out some cream from her bag. Simon listened to her brief description of each one as he opened the water bottle in his hands and drew in a sip.

"I had my aunt send me the highest she could find," he said of sunscreen as he looked over the items that she brought out from her bag. "It's just not doing it," he said, curious as to what was in the jar beyond the aloe. Maybe he would have to ask her for the ingredients or see if he couldn't find it somewhere. He certainly wasn't about to take hers.

Simon lifted the jar from the table and looked at it, turning it over in his hands before placing it back down. "It's not the products that are the problem; it's me. I foolishly thought I could handle outdoor Summer Camp," he said with a smile, but was more frustrated than happy and didn't really want to be smiling. He didn't really want to be frustrated either.

"Guess we sometimes have trouble realizing our flaws and sometimes have even more trouble admitting defeat, huh?"
Was it so wrong though to, just for once, want to be able to do what everyone else was able to do? He had to lurk in the shadows his whole entire life.

"Simon, by the way," he realized he hadn't introduced himself. That was rude of him. He was allowing his bad mood to get the better of him and realized he needed to attempt to perk out of it. He had seen the girl before, he was pretty sure, but only in passing through the corridors. "Simon Kincaid. Second year Hufflepuff."

Santario’s brow furrowed just a little when he stated the problem was just him, and that was when she started really looking at him. Taking in his skin, not that she would be able to see precisely how pale it was under his sunburn. His eyes, were they red like most dhampirs? His nails could be claws unless he trimmed them excessively. All traits she would quickly pick up on being so close to the boy. She had people in her life, such as Nico, Kaegen, and Howard. She had come to learn the signs, which usually followed with an unsettling feeling, but this boy did not give that off. Perhaps, he was not old enough yet? Not that she could proclaim to understand why Dhampirs gave off the feeling that they did.

“It is easy to become stubborn, especially when you are fighting against yourself.” She chose her words carefully; if she were correct in an assumption based on his own words, she did not want to come right out and say it. She rarely did, even with those she knew much better, and those she didn't might not like it pointed out. “Santario Martin. Third-year, Slytherin. A pleasure to make your acquantance” She was not a Prefrect yet, but her name could be familiar from duel and some editions from the Hogwarts Headliner when she wrote for them last year.

“Let’s at least try this one; it should still offer you some relief even if your skin is… Well, much more sensitive than mine. The biggest problem with a sunburn is keeping your skin hydrated. I’ve heard even dhampir’s who get burned can still be treated the same way other people can. So if it can work for them, certainly it can work for you.” More dancing around a suspicion as she opened her jar and took a large scoop out with two of her fingers and started rubbing it between her hands.

Santario would motion for one of his arms, and if he complied, she would start to rub the cream into his skin as gently as possible. It is possible, depending on how used to being touched he was, that he could notice that Santario seemed to have a gentler touch than most. Simon, even as a dhampir, would find the sensation slightly cooling, and it would offer a slight hint of relief while emitting the scent of night-blooming jasmine.
@Simon Kincaid

Gentle touch comes from healing sage & the lotion helping, even if just a little, comes from dhampir lore.

Talking with @Santario Martin

When she mentioned about his skin possibly being more sensitive than her own, he glanced over to her to really get a good look. She was pale and he could see her as the type that would burn instead of tan but something about her didn't seem like a dhampir. He sometimes wondered if his kind didn't give off some kind of vibe, because he felt it before with one of his errand partners and he felt it again during one summer night in London that summer when a man showed up at his door.

He brought his thoughts back to the current moment.

The Slytherin seemed to know what she was talking about with the cream because as it was being applied he could already begin to feel the relief. "Maybe that's what I'll have to spend most of my research on this year in the Library, different cures of ailments and afflictions. Last year, all of this stuff was new to me so I focused on a general background knowledge of the wizarding world, and then all its creatures and plants." He had come across many which had medical benefit, and that had already made him a little curious in the subject.

"I don't really know which is worse, coming to Hogwarts and not knowing a thing or coming from it all and knowing there's restrictions on what you can or cannot do because of your age,"
he said, thinking of the differences that probably a muggleborn or someone of magic felt. "What was your experience like?" He didn't know which she was, but he knew that out of all the houses, Slytherin seemed to have the most population of students that had come from a magical background.

Santario nodded as she gently worked the cream into his skin, moving from one arm to the next, motioning for it when she needed it. The cream was a little goes a long way, taking less than expected to cover up his exposed arms. “This one is pretty simple fresh aloe, coconut oil, beeswax, and a few drops of any essential oil you want for scent. Otherwise, you’ll just smell faintly of coconut. You can also add in tea tree but only a little at a time, so it doesn’t ruin the consistency, but you can always balance it with more solids. I’ll let you do your own face; trust me, it needs it, so does the back of your neck.” The excess on her hands would be rubbing into her own forearms and hands as she continued to listen to him.

“I am the opposite of you. I come from purebloods. I used to help my mom prep potion ingredients, and they had me practicing wand motions with sticks. I was into it, so it was not a bad thing. I learned the proper ways to apply burn and bruise pastes before I learned how to hold a camera.” She laughed a little with a bit of a shrug. “I think coming here was finally being able to do the things we saw at home. I grew up watching it, never being able to do it, and now I finally can, within reason, of course. Kind of like the unattainable finally being attained? If that makes sense.”

She watched him for a moment before finally deciding to breach the subject. “If I am correct, you must have had it a bit harder than most other children raised in the muggle world… The way your skin burns. I am not unfamiliar with it.” Her sapphire eyes would meet his if he chooses to meet her eye contact. “You hide it quite well, whether on purpose or not. Not that I think there is anything to hide.” Because she did not though she did high respect people and their choice to hide what they were if they wanted to.

Truths with @Santario Martin

He did as told, putting some of the cream onto his face and some at the back of his neck as he listened to her share her experience about being from a pureblood background. How very different their upbringing must have been. He only could wonder what it was like to help mix potions and know about this magical world from the start.

Then she caught him off guard. She mentioned how he must have had it harder than other children in the muggle world because of the way his skin burned. ...And that he hid it well. Simon's brown eyes lifted to meet her gaze for a moment and he could just tell that she knew.

She knew.

There were only two other people besides himself that knew this fact but here the Slytherin had figured it out. There was no sense hiding it, not so much because it wasn't something to be ashamed of but because she already discovered it as fact.

He laughed a soft nervous laugh. "Yea...growing up I thought I had a genetic condition called Xeroderma Pigmentosum. It causes an aversion to sunlight. I never liked it and easily burned even as a baby and my mum, she had her own sickness to deal with and was so sick of doctors and tests that she didn't want to put me through all that. One doctor suggested it and she just took it as fact. Later on I come to discover that there must have been something pretty damn crazy about my father since my mum, she was just a muggleborn witch."

Simon grew quiet for a moment. It was a bit odd for him that someone had picked up on it but he knew it was pretty obvious. Unfortunately he couldn't help the pale skin or how it easily burned. There were other characteristics as well. "...Do you truly believe it's nothing to be ashamed of?"

His nervous laughter told San that he understood that she knew, but he had not withdrawn or taken hostile action, so that was good. Not many people ever enjoyed having their race talked about, especially if they were trying to hide it or felt ashamed of it. A wave of relief washed over her as she watched him while he spoke about what he went through as a child. “That must have been intensely frustrating.” She could not imagine having gone through everything he must have with his muggle doctors.

Then he posed his question, and she seemed to sit up a little straighter and look at him dead on, willing to make eye contact if he was. “There is absolutely nothing to be ashamed about! Every person is built differently, and we must work on accepting that rather than trying to change it all the time. I know a decent amount of dhampirs and other people that have more in them than human. You are all unique in your own way, and I think you should own it instead of running from it.” Santario never saw people who had other things in them as less. If anything, she saw them as having more.

She motioned toward the cream. “And seriously hang on to that. At least until you can talk to Monsieur Brumby to get a better solution. With how burnt you are right now, you will have trouble sleeping tonight if you do not have anything to put on it. If you get something better from the nurse, then you can always leave it with the Phoenix Cabin.” Even burn cream would do him one better for what he had suffered that day, but he would still have to procure it from the nurse.
