“Excuse me? Going up against me is too much to handle?” Alec chuckled, his laughter making the night seem as bright as day. “I lost my first two duels Snake-boy, there is no way that's possible. Me and AJ, oh um... Allister-Jameson MacAllister for full; anyway, we have a new strategy now though. He'll probably end up being the target still. He was knocked out first in our last two duels.” Wyatt chuckled.

“So, part of your strategy is for one of you to get knocked out? I guess now I can see why you lost those duels,” Wyatt teased. In his head, though, he was more hung up on Allister-Jameson… MacAllister. His parents couldn’t have switched out the first Allister for anything else? Wyatt wasn’t sure how close Alec and “AJ” were, so he didn’t make fun of it aloud, but the weird name would be on his mind for some time.

“Tell me about that duel you were talking about.”

“The upcoming one?” Alec asked, setting down his bag and leaning forward to get a better look at the lake. He looked entranced with the view. The boy was barely paying attention to his own words. Though Wyatt knew he wasn’t looking at him, he nodded anyway, not wanting to verbally assure Alec for fear of ripping him out of his trance. The lake was definitely beautiful.

Maybe less so to Wyatt, though that wouldn’t come as a shock to anyone. Even though it would make sense for anyone to feel less than comfortable there, Wyatt still thought he was broken. It wasn’t the memory of getting thrown into the lake that made him feel shaky, but the memory of everyone coming to help him.

May Moonstar, the girl he’d once helped through a tough moment was there. She now thought he was a helpless loser. Opeila Winters, the girl who he stuck up for when Hanako Tone was an asshole was there. She now thought he was a helpless loser. Cassandra Ironwoods, Alec’s fiancé and fellow parselmouth was there. They now likely held the moment of weakness over his head and thought he was a helpless loser.

Alec was there. Merlin, Wyatt hoped he didn’t now see him as a helpless loser.

And a bloody prefect had arrived at the scene? Just the luck Wyatt had–

“I'm hoping we'll win, I wanna prove we can. I know AJ is getting upset since he's the captain and he's lost all his duels so far.” Alec started, his voice (still soft and entranced) bringing Wyatt out of his thoughts. “The duel is twelve days from now, we're up against Ravenclaw.”

Even Wyatt, himself, didn’t know why, but out of nowhere he just started smiling. He looked up at the stars, and after a few seconds, it went away but everything still seemed so nice. Certainly nice enough to smile if he wanted to. He just felt safe near Alec, even though the two of them were far away from any professor or prefect that could help them if any danger came their way. It almost felt like danger didn’t exist.

“Oh,” Wyatt said suddenly. He’d looked down and remembered the slightly heavy bag containing two teacups he’d been carrying this whole time. “I, erm, got you something,” he stammered, suddenly feeling anxious. What if Alec hated the teacups? Worse, what if he hated the teacups and pretended to like them?

He stuffed his free hand into his pocket, and handed Alec the bag with a faint smirk.

Even as Alec had been captured by the lake his eyes also wandered. Alec could never keep focus for long amounts of time, even beauty at its most couldn't keep him. He'd been starting to think that would always be the way it was. Constantly moving onto new projects and new things. Alec liked having the freedom to be able to just do these things. Make a jar full of jokes, talk to his friends, wandering in the freeing feeling of the darkness. Watching the stars or admiring the lake. Sure, there was some rule-breaking involved. But Alec liked to believe it was "rule-bending", and for a good cause if that didn't satisfy his mind. Which in bending rules, it never did. There always needed to be some justifiable reason. Alec's birthday honestly didn't seem good enough, but that's what he was going for.

“Nooooo” Alec shook his head smiling as he finally caught up and onto the conversation. Or at least Wyatt's earlier reply “I didn't mean it like that, he just gets targeted. I can't tell whether it because he's the stronger dueler or the weaker dueler. It's probably the first one.” Alec said. “He's really nice,” Alec didn't know AJ thatt well, however, you could tell a lot about a person when they are on the brink of passing out. And especially when they're still cheering you on.

Wyatt spoke up as he'd just remembered something, and he had. Looking nervous, stumbling on his words as he'd explained he brought Alec something. Alec wanted to poke at Wyatt just a little when he saw him like that. Wyatt wasn't always nervous, out of the two Alec messed up his words and stuttered more. The foreign sight was a nice reminder. Alec however didn't want to end up embarrassing Wyatt who likely needed more reassurance than a small amount of teasing.

Alec noticed as he was handed the bag, Wyatt was smirking not a big one but something small.“Wait you have to let me grab mine for you. I wanna see your face first.” Alec said, he seemed more excited about giving his own gift. Alec hadn't considered the fact that this excitement for his own might project lacking for the gift he was being given. Even if that wasn't the case. Alec had just been waiting to show Wyatt for forever and what more perfect time than now.

Energy filled Alec right away as if he was about to bounce up and down over showing Wyatt his gift. Alec wasn't completely sure Wyatt would like it as much as Alec did. Especially since Wyatt couldn't use it much now. But the way it would look on Wyatt, it was just amusing and so fun to Alec. Alec set down Wyatt's rather heavy bag down gently. Reaching for his messenger bag to pull out the scarf. “Now it isn't wrapped or anything. Mainly because I don't know how you wrap soft and fluffy things but that is beside the point.” Alec said as he finally was able to pull it out. Dropping the bag on the ground, Alec flinching away as he heard the bag hit the ground and the stuff in it. Remembering his wand, and that glass jar was in there as well. He had the oops look on his face but brushed it off pretty quickly.

Hopefully, it hadn't broken... It didn't sound like it had. Just like a rough fall. It would be fine no doubt.

When he had gotten over this Alec held out the scarf for Wyatt to see. Unlike Wyatt, he didn't seem as nervous. It probably wasn't the fact that he had pride in his gift-making abilities. More so the fact that Alec really liked it. And the new additions. He'd felt he'd needed to add more to the light purple scarf ever since making it. What were the new additions you ask?

Pins, pins, pins, and pins, lots of pins. Specifically and actually pinback buttons. Ones with little random things all over. Starting out white, but now colored, and even surprisingly painted on. One with a snake and lion on it for example. Random book quotes that always had made Alec smile, he was sure they would do the same for Wyatt too. Uplifting quite a few of them, and humorous as well. A small cartoonish drawing of the Hogwarts corridors with soap down them. Alec wouldn't admit to the work being his own even if asked. A lot of them included random memories or things to capture moments in time.

For example, a boy who looked similar to Wyatt playing guitar. Or a button with a little hill drawn upon it and the words "Hill-arious" The buttons were a much more vulnerable piece than the scarf would ever be. Because they were things Alec treasured, and things they would both know about and remember. Alec would've made the whole scarf with buttons all over. He had a ton more he'd done in his dorm. Yet he figured about the 29 or so buttons was enough for just this scarf.

All in all, it took hours and hours of work to make it. Alec had decided if Wyatt wasn't ever going to use it. Alec would. He'd get Wyatt to pawn it off on him somehow. He'd make Wyatt keep the buttons though, those were the ones that felt important. Besides, Alec swore those buttons were evil. They kept poking him when he was trying to put them on. No smart person would wear a scarf around like that if they were to be legitimately using this item to keep warm all the time. Especially when it's something that goes around your neck. Not a smart move. Alec would not recommend. He hadn't realized tiny jabs from pins could hurt so much. Or was possible to make someone bleed to a large extent.

The process of trying to put the buttons on. Even though it was worth it because it turned out well. The process was horrid.

“Wait you have to let me grab mine for you. I wanna see your face first.”

Let me grab mine for you? It was like Alec had forgotten they were here to celebrate his birthday. But that wasn’t the only thing about Alec’s interjection that caught him off guard. A gift? Wyatt rarely got those, whether it was because his mother just couldn’t afford to get him something one year, or because there wasn’t anyone who would want to get or make him something. And if they did, not too many people knew when his birthday was, as Wyatt didn’t often share the date with anyone. Alec was an exception.

Alec seemed just as thrilled digging through his messenger bag to retrieve Wyatt’s gift as he’d seemed while first talking about dueling. Once again, he was almost vibrating with excitement. Happiness was a really good look on the Gryffindor, Wyatt noticed. So focused on Alec, he had barely noticed him take his bag and set it down. He barely cared that his gift was looked over. In fact, the later the reveal of his gift, the better.

“Now it isn't wrapped or anything. Mainly because I don't know how you wrap soft and fluffy things but that is beside the point,” Alec said as he pulled a light purple scarf, riddled with buttons out from his bag. The moment he got the scarf out of his bag, he dropped the bag to the ground, and both Alec and Wyatt winced as they heard it hit the grass. Surely, the stuff in the bag would be alright…

Then, the Gryffindor handed Wyatt his new scarf, the one Alec had mentioned at the end of that P.U.R.E. Ball mess. He looked over the tens of buttons, at one that looked like him playing guitar, at hill-arious, at quotes, at a snake and a lion, at a teacup, at a park, and at a painfully familiar corridor with soap covering the floor. Wyatt chuckled at that one. The memory didn’t feel so bad anymore.

Honestly, Wyatt couldn’t believe it had been so long since Alec pulled that prank. Over a year, probably since they met, too. Alec talking to himself in the corridor. Wyatt commenting on it. The rest. Well, maybe that memory was one Wyatt didn’t like to relive, but he could deal with the impromptu slip-n-slide. It was actually hilarious in retrospect. He couldn’t believe he’d reacted so seriously when it happened.

Or not. He wasn’t very composed toward the end. Or the middle. Or the beginning. He fell for the most basic prank. Slipped on soap. He got up immediately… and then passed out very shortly after threatening to hit Alec and calling him a bastard. Looking back, he was shocked that the crack of his nose breaking wasn’t enough to knock him out, but the blood loss was what did the trick eventually. Of course, Alec had tried to help. Of course, Wyatt let him. Wait… a favor. It was the second one then, but more must’ve piled up by now.

Shit, Wyatt thought. He really hadn’t done anything for Alec. Alec, who he kicked in the face the day they met. Alec, who helped him to the Hospital Wing even after he strongly refused his help and called him names. Alec, who put up with him, which was more than Wyatt, himself, could do sometimes. Alec, who didn’t leave him in the dirt when he got beat up by some muggle losers. He could’ve. He could’ve left. And he didn’t. He helped, even though it could’ve meant not going back to Hogwarts.

Wyatt was losing count of how many good things Alec had done for him. So many feelings were swirling around his brain, none he could name. The only thing he could register was that it was too much. But he didn’t break down. He didn’t cry, shake, pass out, forget how to breathe, or even fidget. He just smiled. He knew he probably looked stupid, and he knew he was in front of another person. But this was Alec.

Alec was okay.

And Alec was insanely brave in the smallest ways that he, himself wouldn’t notice. He wasn’t ever trying to be someone he wasn’t. Whatever he did was because he wanted to do it, like climbing a tree to get to his room even though it was difficult and practically pointless. Or painting his nails, which looked really nice, though Wyatt didn’t know how to mention it. Wyatt didn’t know how to do that. He’d never do something to be noticed or different on purpose. He’d much rather fall into the background.

Alec was okay with being different and new and unique and special. He was so good at it, too.

And Alec was so understanding, beyond Wyatt’s comprehension. He’d never dream of putting himself first, like with basically raising Jackie when his parents wouldn’t. Or being so quiet about the divorce like he didn’t know talking about it would take some of the weight off of his shoulders. He never took his own pain seriously, and Wyatt wished that Alec did that more. There were so many things Wyatt wished he knew how to put into words.

Wyatt didn’t understand why Alec was the one person who didn’t make him feel alone or weird, or how he made him feel safe and calm. It was because Alec wasn’t perfect. He was okay, like Wyatt. And that’s what made this random Gryffindor everything to some equally random Slytherin. Alec J. Mason was the only person who didn’t made Wyatt feel different or crazy.

“Alec, this is really amazing,” Wyatt said, dramatically putting on the scarf. “How do I look?”

For whenever you open the gift from Wyatt:

Inside the silver bag, Alec would find two brown boxes tied with a thin, pastel yellow ribbon. One of the boxes would be slightly larger than the other, and in that box, there’d be a light blue teacup with purple flowers painted on it. The other box would have a smaller, plain blue teacup inside. Both cups would be padded by tissue paper inside the box, and both of the boxes would have little stickers on the bottom that read “Protected by the Unbreaking Charm.”

Also in the larger box: A drawing of Alec sitting on a branch of the tree by his bedroom window, looking at Cookie who he’s holding in the palm of his hand. A note that says “for the tea parties you’ll throw one day.”

Also in the smaller box: A drawing of Jackie having a tea party with her little tea set, smiling widely with Alec seated next to her and grinning just as wide.

The way thoughts could swarm the brain of a person before they all buzzed away immediately was an absurd idea. For how could one go from everything to nothing at once? The Gryffindor was buzzing with excitement, completely and utterly ecstatic, the Gryffindor was over the moon, it had just been the thoughts of the act of giving his gift too Wyatt. Alec searched for more eloquent ways to put the perpetual excitement, though by the end came up raw with nothing. Handing the scarf too Wyatt, in a rather dramatic fashion, Alec's breath hitched. He was nervous. His mind had already found ways around as he'd been looking over the scarf a while back. Alec cared too much about a single item, and when he'd started to worry, his mind had started to come up with the flaws in the gift. Alec wasn't able to help it as a million thoughts swirled around his head, a million different ways Wyatt could react, Alec's shoulders went up, tensing slightly. The Gryffindor had been so calm seconds before and he-

Wyatt chuckled, his eyes were on the scarf, the sound brought Alec back to reality(too often he would drown in his own thoughts), focusing on the moment, letting out a breath he'd been holding in. He moved closer to see which one Wyatt's eyes were on. Eyes catching the pin with the hallways covered in soap. He worried for whatever poor souls had happened upon the mess before it'd been cleaned up. The drawing in it's cartoon form let Alec heal from the incident, it had been easier to move on over feeling guilty about it. He was glad it had been Wyatt, it had to be, if it had been anyone random it would have been harder to let go. Alec knew now Wyatt had forgiven him, strangers may have not ended up affording such grace.

Alec pointed to a more hidden away button on the scarf, further off from the other buttons and so it was harder too notice. It was Alec, holding out his hand to shake to what seemed like a slightly crabby Wyatt. Alec looked as if he'd just finished speaking in it, Wyatt's turn, introducing himself for the second time. Something to start anew, cringe, sure, but it needed to have happened. “This one is my favorite, you better not lose it.” With that small threat out of the way, one that may have been about more than the button, Alec moved too back up as Wyatt spoke, trying to get a better look of the scarf from further away, it stood out in the dark. “It was worth the wait then?” Alec asked, he said it to tease Wyatt slightly, it had been a while since Alec had first mentioned the gift. The finished product may have been slightly different if such a long wait hadn't happened, if Wyatt had gotten it for Christmas instead of having too wait so long. It seemed Alec was going to have to settle for Wyatt covered in snow with the scarf some other time.

Wyatt made a show of dramatically putting on the scarf, Alec tried to keep from smiling so much it hurt. Alec laughed, “the scarf was the missing piece to the ensemble.” He wasn't going to mention the fact that the lighter color stood out compared to the darker ones Wyatt was wearing; it made the scarf look out of place. Alec however after this tilted his head slightly to the left as he looked at Wyatt, “wait-” Alec said, he moved closer to adjust the scarf just a bit before backing up once more. “I had this image in my head because I was thinking about the scarf so much, now it's perfect.” Alec said, he seemed satisfied, but that lasted only a moment before his mind jumped. “Oh! Um, if you do plan to use that scarf with some practical application you should take the buttons off.” Alec showed his fingers to Wyatt, he'd been putting on the last two earlier, the places where the buttons had pricked him were barely visible. It was just an annoyance overall.

Alec glanced back at his messenger bag, that was when Alec had remembered the bag Wyatt had handed him, the one Alec had set to the side. Alec smiled awkwardly and rubbed the back of his neck as he looked up, “I got a little too excited about giving you your gift.” Alec had no clear idea of how to explain it any other way, Alec always got a little carried up in his own excitement when he was giving gifts to people, he'd gotten more carried away when it was Wyatt especially. He'd forgotten Wyatt had brought a gift for Alec, and that Alec was thirteen. Which he still wanted to ramble on about being thirteen. It was so weird. He was a teenager but also a young one so kinda not? But also? And also he's just thirteen, which is a big big big number. Alec certainly didn't feel that much more magically older, yet he couldn't help from obsessing over it either.

Alec gently reached for the silver bag, the bag that had been set down more mindfully then Alec's own. It was surprisingly heavy. Alec looked Wyatt's way once more, “Do you want me to open it now?” He asked, because it was the more polite sounding thing to say. Alec didn't realize his eyes looked that of a pleading puppy. Obviously though Alec and Wyatt both knew Alec should open it now. Wyatt probably wanted to see his face, and Alec had forgotten patience was a thing, to hold off until morning so they could maybe open it when it was was sunnier out. The sunnier out thing didn't even make sense as Alec thought about it, nighttime was the best for anything and everything.
