BITING THE END OF her quill had become a habit ever since Cedrella started working on her homework. Initially, she'd frown and huff to herself, grumble when she was already sour, then almost cry out of frustration. A lot of emotions she couldn't quite wrap herself around.

This time, despite the neat change in scenario, as she sat comfortably outside (ignoring the terrible weather that was bound to get her sick), in her winter robes, Cedrella was feeling no different than all the other times she had decided to face this particular homework. She had skipped the first stages of stress and was now biting on her quill while looking around, wishing a magical creature would eat and destroy her homework before she had time to finish and deliver it to her professor.

That was when Cedrella's eyes stopped at the familiar figure of one Samantha Salwis all by herself.

Surprisingly enough, she did not hesitate to get up and make her way towards the other witch. In the back of her mind, Cedrella argued with herself, regretting the idea immediately. However, it was too late to back down, as she had gotten close enough to be spotted. If she turned around, the other would most likely think of her as odd.

So, Cedrella sat down next to her, and said, loud and clear, "I need your help,"

After she had finished reading one of the chapters of the book the young girl looked over the lake. Over the past few months this place at the lake had become something special for the young girl. She loved the few she had over the lake and the grass made it a good place to sit, except when it had just rained, then the gras would be wet.

The young girl heard somebody approach her, she turned around to see a familiar face. It was Cedrella, a fellow Ravenclaw first year, who approached her. They had been in a couple classes together. While their relationship after their first meeting had been quite chilly, over the months it had gradually improved.

Samantha looked to Cedrella, a bit surprised to see her. "Hi," Samantha watched the other girl sit down next to her. "You need my help? For what?"

Samantha loved helping people, because she loved to see other people happy. And what was a bigger reason, she could share her knowledge and look smarter. She really was a know it all, and like people to know or at least think that she really knew it all.

She closed her book and placed it next to her: "I think I'll be able to help with homework, I have already finished everything." Samantha had been keeping up with all her homework and most of the time she had even finished it before it needed to be done. She had lots of free time on her hands and sometimes even learned more than she had to.

CEDRELLA STARED AT THE parchment she had in her hands, then turned to Samantha. It was so unlike herself to ask another person for help, let alone a student she didn't get along with at first.

But the Salwis girls seemed prone to help, and she was not in the right place to say no. (After all, she had been the one to go after Samantha, asking for her help, duh). Scratching the back of her neck, Cedrella handed the parchment and her side annotations to the girl.

"I can't really... think of anything to write down here and here," She pointed to the last two questions in her Potions assignment. "I thought of asking my brother for help, but he's busy with his Ministry of Magic stuff, so, yeah," She lied, just to seem a bit more dedicated in her homework. "I tried paying attention in class, but Potions isn't really my cup of tea if you know what I mean,"

Cedrella tugged at her clothing, feeling a bit awkward. Despite the other's kindness, she felt embarrassed to expose her lack of knowledge like that. She, who had been rude to Samantha Salwis at first, solely because she wasn't interested in the Potions classroom, while the other tried to make her pay attention, was now paying the price of not caring for her lessosn.

"If you could help me out. I'd appreciate it," murmured Cedrella, shyly.

The death stare girl Cedrella stared at the parchment before she gave it to Samantha. It was like she was debating with herself, it made Samantha impatient. When Cedrella finally gave Sam the parchment, Samantha started reading it right away.

Samantha read through the last two questions while Cedrella was talking about her brother who was working at the Ministry of Magic. When Cedrella dropped the words Ministry of Magic Samantha's head turned away from the paper to Cedralla. "Your brother works at the Ministry of Magic? That's so cool!" Of course Samantha had known about the Ministry of Magic, but she didn't know anybody who worked there. The young girl was fascinated by magic and it seemed really cool to her to work at the Ministry of Magic.

"Well, you can't be good in everything." Samantha smiled to the other girl. "But maybe if you would have paid attention you would have known this one," she pointed at the last question. "The teacher had said something about it during the class, but you also need your textbook for it. Do you have it with you? I remember most of it, but it is better to check your textbook, it was somewhere in the beginning I believe. And the other question is also in your textbook but more to the end of the book, I believe around chapter 16." Maybe some of her comment were thought to be rude, but Samantha meant it all well. She wanted to help her classmate.

"If you could help me out. I'd appreciate it," murmured Cedrella, shyly. "Yes, of course. I like helping people, so no problem. And maybe you can help me to with something, I just need advice on my mother's birthday present." Sam had no idea's for presents that she could give her mom, but maybe Cedrella did.

"My mom always says she misses me, because I am here, so I though maybe I could do something with that. But I have no idea what." Samantha wasn't the best in coming up with presents, but she never wanted to ask somebody what they wanted. So most of the time she gave pretty bad gifts, but her mom always acted like she liked them.

CEDRELLA NODDED TO everything Samantha said, having no option but to listen, as she had been the one to ask for the girl's help. Quietly, Cedrella grabbed her textbook and opened it in the first few pages, as Salwis had instructed, eyes scanning through every word to see if she could find what she needed.

"I do pay attention, alright. Occasionally," Cedrella couldn't help but say. It wasn't a lie, but it wasn't the truth either. She did pay attention, whenever the professors called her out. She'd flush, cough, and hide her face, but would listen to what the adults had to say. It lingered for only a few seconds before she focused on different things. "But sometimes, it's hard to focus,"

She spotted what she needed, and pointed at it, as if afraid the words would leave the textbook and hide somewhere she'd never be able to find them again, "Ah, there it is," Cedrella clicked her tongue, disappointed. "I swear, I went through this textbook several times and couldn't find anything,"

Cedrella ran her hand through her face, pouting and knitting her brows, scribbling the answer down in the parchment, quickly, but with the most perfect calligraphy.

While Cedrella was flipping trough the book, Samantha looked over her shoulder. Carefully she was watching what Cedrella was doing, making sure the other girl would make no mistakes.

"I do pay attention, alright. Occasionally," Samantha's smile grew. "I am sure you do." She said, teasing the other girl. Samantha tucked her hair behind her ears, slightly bored.

"Did you find it?" Cedrella was still flipping trough the pages of the book. It took ages, according to Sam. When Cedrella finally found it Samantha smiled, it had been exactly were she said it would be. Patiently Samantha waited for Cedrella to finish scribbling down her answers.

When Cedrella was done Samantha would start talking again. "Okay, so now I helped you, so you have to help me. That's the deal." Well, they hadn't made a deal, but in Sam's head that was the deal.

"So my moms birthday present. Are you good at thinking of presents? Well, you can't be worse then me." Samantha hoped Cedrella had some good idea's, otherwise her mom would get a birthday card with some random nice smelling item Sam could find in the store.

Maybe it would help if Samantha knew what the other girl gave her mother as birthday present. "What do you give your mom for her birthday?" Samantha was determent to get her mom something nice this year. Every year her sister would come with these amazing presents and Samantha would come with awful presents. Sam missed the creativity to come up with something original and fun.

SHE, WHO HAD BEEN entranced by her assignment, was surprised by the other's words. The youngest Blythe had quietly hoped this meeting wouldn't require more social interaction on her part, and that Salwis wouldn't drag this on for much longer, but she had been wrong.

A deal, then. Thought Cedrella, half-agreeing to the other girl's good humor, turning to her, thinking about what she had asked. If one could be honest, Cedrella wasn't used to buying gifts for her parents. More often than not, mother and father would leave to celebrate their birthdays by themselves or with their older friends. As both celebrated their birthdays and their wedding anniversary in the same month, they'd join in for one vacation to spend time together.

So, she never had the chance to choose birthday gifts for either of her parental figures. When she was younger, Cedrella would write them silly letters and drawings, reveling in the sweet smiles she'd get from her mother whenever she drew her perfectly.

"I'm not the right person for this, actually. I'm sure what I'd give my mother... Well, if I had to think on the spot, I'd write her a poem or make something she'd enjoy. Like, a necklace or something," said Cedrella, rubbing her hands on her knees. "I'm not very good with gifts. I'm sorry. If you cannot make her anything, perhaps asking your father to buy her something would be nice... Like, a dress. Or, or... flowers?"

"A necklace, I like that one! Maybe I could have a little picture of me inside of it, so my mom doesn't have to miss me. Or at least, when she misses me, she can look at the picture! That's so smart!" Actually Samantha was complimenting herself on how smart the idea of the picture was, but it looked like she complimented Cedrella. However the young girl only cared about her idea and didn't realized it.

Cedrella started talking about how bad she was with gifts. Samantha didn't believe her, she had come up with amazing ideas. "No, no, no. I don't want to hear it. You gave me an amazing idea and I could also do flowers with them!" Sam looked at Cedrella and grinned, she was really happy with the ideas she now had for her mother's birthday present.

The small girl wanted to thank her hero for the great ideas. Samantha wanted to give the other girl a hug, but stopped half way. Sam remember what had happened last time she touched Cedrella. It was clear that the other girl wasn't a fan of phisical touch. She had already leaned towards Cedrella to give her a hug, but now she smoothly changed her hug into a handshake.

The young girl held out her hand, hoping the other girl would accept it. "Thank you very much for this amazing deal. Next time you need any help you can come to my and we can make such a good deal again. Maybe you could get my some candy then!" In Samantha's mind this was an amazing business offer. She would get candy and Cedrella would get help with her homework.
