Battle Royale Quidditch Match

The last year had been one of blood, separation, and death for young Valentin “Niffler” Schnell. Following last summer’s quidditch match, most of Durmstrang’s team broke up, tearing gaping fissures between him and his closest friends. He even had to spill the blood of his friend, Mikael, during their duel over if Valentin was worthy of friendship with ex-team mate Yefim. Recently Valentin’s Russian mother, the famous wrock star Zinoviya Makarova, passed away after a crazed stalker fan murdered her. Shortly thereafter Valentin lost contact with his German father who sought revenge. Now under the care of a family friend and struggling against his eating disorder, Valentin clung to the only thing he had always had: quidditch, his fans, and a need to win the respect of his remaining friends.

Valentin’s heart was ravaged by the attack on Koldovstoretz as if the victims had been his own family. The boy was half-Russian himself, and his closest friends always spoke in Russian amongst themselves. Valentin’s family had travelled constantly, especially to Russia, during his parents’ musical tours, and for them to have set up a home base in Germany was fundamentally a coin flip. Those deaths… any of them could have been him. Those could have been Yefim, could have been Mikael, blown to pieces if they had simply matriculated at a different school. To Valentin, the victims were his own people.

Now, a jumble of teams was called together to play a good old game of quidditch. Well, for Valentin it could not be a normal day for enjoyment, crashing about laughing and lazing in the grass under the sun. The only thing Valentin had known for the past year was training in order to take back even a fraction of what was taken from him. Mounting a silver arrow, Valentin shot out onto the pitch like a bullet. He passed each of his team members, including those on the bench, and looked each one in the eyes. If there was a word to describe his face, it simply showed love.

Spiralling to a stop in the center where he stood up on his broom, high above, Valentin’s pale skin shone like a beacon. He rotated his silver-haired head to look at the stadium’s fans in every direction and he placed his hands over his heart. He had carefully practiced his words in English, laden heavily with his Russian accent, so that everyone would understand.

“For you who hurt, for you who no longer feel, for you who cannot find your way… I FIGHT FOR YOU THIS DAY!” screamed the pale seeker. Shooting his arms overhead, Valentin’s hands balled into fists and tears streamed down his face. Surrounded by people from every school, he had purpose again. At last, Valentin could feel.

“There is only one way to win. Death can take those we love most, and even us, but… we must fight. We must fight the emptiness that would kill our hearts forever. Our lost ones would want us to survive. The only way to win is to find our way back to happiness.

Today I fight for all of you. Let us live today and honor those we have lost.”

Truth to be told, Gregorí Erkens did not feel really good when he woke up that morning - in fact, he did not even feel like himself. It worried the boy, because he was supposed to take part in the Quidditch game later - and it would be a difficult game, logically speaking: not only that he was a beginner, but also he was paired with a number of kids from other schools - kids whose flying style he did not know - and they were to play against two teams, also composed of students from different schools.

"It will just be like soccer," the Mexican told himself, inside his head, in Spanish - his mother tongue. At home, Gregorí often played his favorite sport with other children from his neighborhood, and it was not unusual for the Ilvermony boy to play as a goalie. Today, on a school broom, he acted as a keeper - a position he had always assumed similar to a goalkeeper. This was one of the reasons he kept telling himself that today's game would be just like soccer, and the other reason was because soccer almost always made him feel better - something he could really use right now.

Slava was shaken. He was known for his joking nature, his playful bounciness and teasing, yet he had never experienced something like the death of almost an entire team of students. Students that he might have been talking to and could’ve made friends with had they been here. It was a shock to have something like that happen so close, the knowledge that it could have been his team if they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Danger had been something that, in the past, he could punch in the face or run away from. It was the feeling of adrenaline, not solemnness and fear. A moment of silence was called at the beginning of the game and he bowed his head respectfully, honouring the students who were lost.

It didn’t set a good tone for the match. He wanted to respect them further, but he knew that he had to snap out of it. If his head wasn’t in the game, people could get seriously hurt and he would likely end up on the ground. He scoffed at Arjan and rolled his eyes. “Dream on. I’ve got this.” He then turned to the rest of his team. “Let's go! Show them what we're made of,” he cried. With a look at the Ilvermorny students, he added, “We may not all be from the same school, but we play together. Have some fun and, of course, try to win.” He briefly took to fist bumping his teammates or giving them a pat on the shoulder, then added, “We can do this.” With a final nod to a few of them, he mounted his broom and took off into the air, readying himself.

Suzuki yawned as she lugged the school broom over to the Quidditch Field. Yes, she was quite excited, but also quite tired. Maybe she shouldn't have stayed up to read all night. Maybe. Probably.

She joined the rest of the team near the field, watching the other teams putter around the stands. Here it was. What she'd been waiting for all school year long, to get into the Gryffindor Quidditch Team. Although she had never seen the Gryffindor Team playing before, she had watched and played with/against a few team members in scrimmages. And lost against some. Which, although quite disappointed, was still fun. The game was fun. Not the losing. Never the losing.

Griseldis was quite surprised when she found out that her team was going against not one but TWO wizarding schools in this year's International Quidditch game. At first, she didn't understand and thought it was unfair since last year, the Hufflepuff team only went against Durmstrang until she heard the true reason why it ended up being a "Battle Royale" game. The young lioness did feel a bit sad for what happened to those poor students, and the timing was not helping at all because it didn't allow them to have time to mourn for their fallen friends. Still, it didn't sit well with her, but she couldn't do anything about it. All she could do now is to trust her own teammates that they could pull through this together like they always did, even when they had to face more opponents than before.

They already came this far, so she should stay positive and focus on the big game. She mounted on her Silver Arrow and got into her position. No matter what would happen, she was determined to do her best.

Steely brown eyes trained at the muddy ground beneath his feet, a grimace of effort and the huffs of lungs working far too hard – these were the traits marking the entrance of Rafael D’Spacito to the Quidditch Court.

It was a rather unfortunate, you see. Embarrassing, really. It would seem that the young man had gotten caught up in his own dreams of athletic success, having fallen asleep upon his play notes. A simple mistake, one that could have severely damaged his team should he have not caught it early. The very thought brought a green sheen to his cheeks, a red tinge to his ears – he was truly ashamed, though he would never deign to admit it aloud. The guilt was doing nothing for his progression into position, however. The court was beginning to fill out, he noted with a sense of horror – perhaps those inattentive to the happenings in the air would find some humor to the Captain’s nervous sprint, the way his Silver Arrow shuddered haphazardly in his grip, the plastic refreshments bag’s abrasive song of attendance. ‘T’was a worthy punishment, one he could do nothing to dwell on with the time he was severely lacking. Approaching the bench in record time, he dropped his bag by the bench, before deftly boarding his broom, a look of cool indifference on his face as he sidled into position.

Alas, he’d arrived at the scene of the competition, and with few minutes to spare. Certainly not making a good example of himself – he’d simply have to be better next time, make up for his shortcomings with his playing. Leaning forward on his broom, he let the fog of determination flood about his mind, flushing out his own sense of disappointment and self-doubt and replacing it with a steely hunger for redemption – it was time to represent the cup for Gryffindor like the Quidditch Champions he and his team were. The Lions’ streak was at stake, after all.

Abilities:
INTERCEPTION
When a Quaffle is being passed, users with this ability automatically get a chance to Intercept the quaffle. This does not replace their normal action for the round. This put the quaffle in your and by extension you teams' possession.

Also, if the Quaffle is dropped for any reason, you would automatically (without it taking up an action) attempt another Quafflegrab. At present there would be no mid-round way to drop a quaffle due to the order of operations, however there will be certain effects in future patches that can cause this effect.

CATCH
Able to catch two falling players on your broom when playing Quidditch. These additional caught players would be brought to the ground safely and they would be allowed to retrieve their broom and enter play again the next round. This can be done every round as the player's action if they choose to do so.

With brooms that have the feature where an additional player may be caught (such as Bluebottle) where there is a stackable chance of failure with each additional person caught, there is no stacking failure chance for players with this ability.

Lucietta hadn’t thought much about it, really, when she’d signed up for the Quidditch team. Quidditch seemed like another thing she could never really be part of, and she’d wanted to fully immerse herself in this new world. At the time she’d never stopped to consider how particularly brutal the game itself was. Despite all that, Lucie had loved the game. The adrenaline, the whoosh of the wind as she flew by, the game in all. The prospect of actually playing in a game, at right this moment, felt all too surreal.

She’d tried herself to arrive early, as Mama had always told her. ‘Punctuality is key,’ Annalise would tell Lucietta, a serene smile on the woman’s face, blond-white hair tickling Lucietta’s face. Lucietta would laugh at the feeling, but she would always remember Annalise’s words. ’Without it, you are given an image of yourself and your peers you do not want to give.’ At the thought of Mama, Pappa, and Finn and Leon, Lucietta closed her eyes, her face a mixture of sadness and joy and pride. Lucie had seen them just a month ago, but soon enough she would be off to Ilvermorny again. She missed them terribly, but couldn’t wait for her second year. With her broom by her side - her parents had tried to make an effort to buy her a broom that fit her needs when Lucie had told them in her owls that she’d joined the Quidditch team, but they hadn’t managed yet to figure out how it all worked, so for now, Lucie had to use a school broom - Lucie walked out on the field, head held high, trying her best not to seem indifferent. She spotted her team fairly quickly - a strange combination of members from each of the schools, save for Durmstrang and Hogwarts, whom they would be playing against. Lucietta shivered, thinking of how much more difficult it would be to win, playing against twice the amount of people. Her gaze become more focused, more determined. She joined the group of people - she barely knew most of them, and those she did were in passing - and gave them all a smile, making a half-attempt to introduce herself, and a “good luck.”

Would it be horrible of Cassie Heather to say that she was excited?

After... everything, Cassie's parents had nearly pulled her out of summer camp before their daughter had reminded them that there wasn't really any way for her to leave. Plus, she wanted to be with her friends. She wanted to help fix things. And anyway, the attack hadn't happened on site.

That didn't make it any less terrible though.

But there was still a part of her that was excited for this. This was not only her first international quidditch game, but her first international sporting event at all, and that was definitely something to be excited for. Even if you were only able to do it because you were filling in for people who had died.

Well, that had gotten dark real quick.

Cassie reached to rub her rosary beads, a habit she'd taken to doing whenever she thought about the attack, realised they were tucked away safely under her gloves, and decided that she should focus on the game. At the very least, she could try bring home some glory for herself and Beauxbatons (well, and the rest of the schools, if she had to) while she was in the air.

She looked around at her team. It had been cobbled together from every school apart from Durmstrang and Hogwarts, and wasn't looking too bad. Cassie didn't know most of her teammates all that well but she was confident that she knew them well enough to play a game of Quidditch with them.

Cassie adjusted her new uniform while she listened to the man talking. Wasn't he the headmaster of Durmstrang or something? Or was it Ilvermorny? Eh, similar enough. At the moment, Cassie was more preoccupied with trying to remember who had suggested cloaks as a part of Wixes United's uniform. They looked cool, but Cassie kept stepping on hers, which wasn't great.

Then, the man announced a moment of silence for SCAR's victims and Cassie bowed her head, clasping her hands together as she murmured a soundless prayer to God.

Cassie lost track of the rest of the speech. Something about teamwork? It was the kind of speech her mum liked giving. Or her papa, actually. They were quite similar in that respect.

For our fallen teammates, said Luka, the team's keeper. Cassie gave him a small smile, if he noticed. This situation was entirely unprecedented. For once, the girl had no idea what to say.

The captain, Anastasia, was also from Koldovstoretz, and just said two words before following her schoolmate into the sky.

From across the pitch, Cassie suddenly saw Scarlett give her a thumbs up and gave her a small wave, suddenly realising that they were opponents now. Her, and Scarlett, and Charles. Well, Cassie would just have to beat them anyway.

Then her attention was brought back to her own team by Milo Durand, who swaggered up to her with his usual arrogance. (Well, maybe it wasn't swaggering, but it certainly looked that way to a rather biased Cassie.) "Me, obviously. But may the best person win."

Cassie mounted her broom, her birthday present which would see its first match today, and took off, waving her bat high in the air. "WIXES UNITED FOR THE WIN!"

Viola entered the Quidditch pitch, head held high. She was... oh, she didn't even know the term for what she was feeling right now, but it was a feeling that seemed prominent whenever she was about to play Quidditch. Excitement, maybe? Nausea? Of course, whatever she was feeling was also mixed with the uncertainty she felt, playing for a makeshift team, and the confusion and fear that concerned the students who had recently passed.

It was odd, playing in a team not fully made up of Beauxbatons students. Strange. She didn't feel good about it. She'd say that maybe team spirit just wasn't her thing, but she felt pride whenever playing for Beauxbatons. This feeling wasn't pride. Also, on top of not playing only for Beauxbatons, she was playing second-string, for the chaser role, nonetheless. Of course, she had no doubt the role would come easily onto her, her mother had been the Beauxbatons chaser, but she was used to playing as a keeper, and she was used to playing first-string. What was second string but a backup plan? She was more than a backup plan! Taking her seat, she felt guilty for some reason, as if it was her fault, as if she had done something wrong.

She bowed her head in silence for the fallen students. Again, another feeling she wasn't used to, but at least one she could name; fear. With the way she had been raised, and the future that had been planned for her, Viola forgot too often that she was a child. This fear crept inside of her and made sure she never forgot, and it had been following her around since she had learnt of the news. It was the terrifying knowledge, she thought, that if she had been in that situation, she wasn't sure she would have made it.

Viola listened to the rest of the speech. All about 'teamwork', and 'trust' and the like. At least he got one part right, although he only got it right if you ignored the rest of the speech; Quidditch was about dealing with success and failure. And no matter if she was playing a position she wasn't used to, and no matter if this team was thrown together messily after some students actually died, her team would be the ones dealing with success.

For the first time, Gia wasn't sure if she wanted to participate in a game of Quidditch. Honestly, she hadn't really felt like doing anything at all since she'd heard about the attack one week ago. The attack where 17 people had died. Although it had been days since it had all happened, the shock was still there. Gia knew that bad things happened in the wizarding world, some of those things much worse than the bad things that happened in the muggle world, but still. Hogwarts and Hogsmeade and all the other wizarding world schools were supposed to be safe. And yet... the incident had still occurred.

Her grip tightening on her broom, Gia found her way to her seat on the bench. The Quidditch Pitch was quite full—definitely more full than she'd ever seen it, at least—and the cheers and claps and other loud noises surrounding her helped draw her from her thoughts for a little while. Looking around at the faces of the other Gryffindor players around her, Gia took a deep breath, trying to get herself a little bit more excited. This was a big game after all, wasn't it?

Yes, it was. Clenching her hands into fists, the lion forced herself to focus. Gryffindor had won the Hogwarts quidditch championships, and now they were the team that was able to represent their school! Plus, the other team was made up of many different members from many different teams, so didn't they have a pretty decent shot at winning it all? With these thoughts glued in her mind, Gia waited for the game to begin.
