Gwen lives in London England with her loving father and mother. Her parents are muggles and knew nothing of magic until the invitation to Hogwarts came. As a science professor at Oxford, her father didn't believe in magic and was very vocal about it. Gwen used to believe and hoped that magic existed, but her father would correct her every time she tried to talk about it. This led her hope to dwindle and she stopped talking about it in front of her father. Her father loved h er and believed he was doing her service for her to grow up. On the other hand, her mother believes kids should be allowed to have imaginations that would support these beliefs. She just thought Gwen was playing pretend though.
Gwen's first instance of accidental magic happened when Gwen and her mother were arguing. Gwen became very angry then suddenly, books went flying off the shelf towards her mother. They missed, but it was very close. Mother brushed it off, saying it must have been an earthquake. Gwen on the other hand had a feeling that she may have caused the chaos. She couldn't explain it, but Gwen believed magic was involved. There were a few other incidences over time also, further strengthening that belief.
The letter from Hogwarts confirmed that belief to be true. She couldn't believe it. When her father read the letter, he refused to believe it was authentic and said it must be a joke. Gwen pleaded with her father to let her go. He refused and to finalize his decision, he threw the letter into the fire burning in the fireplace. Gwen quickly grabbed the letter before it could burn, nearly burning her hand in the process.
Her mother told her she would help her get the supplies and prepare her for Hogwarts the next day. When the time comes for Gwen to go, her mother and her father take her to the station. Her mother was able to convince her father to let her go as it would be good for her.
