Before the game even started he heard a supportive shout come from the stands from a girl he was more than familiar with. San, a girl who he had got to know better was urging him to kick their arses. The encouragement made Gray release a smirk in the corner of his lips before the chess duel was officially underway. Percival was more than happy to deliver with that promise by any means.
With a sudden flick of his wand, he shot a flipendo at Greta, hitting her directly and scoring one of the first hits of the game. Even if it was a small dent in their system, it would go a long way in the later stages of the contest. Gray snapped his head to check on his teammates and saw that the queen had been set on fire. He slowly shook his head and looked over to the enemy queen, who for whatever reason called them cowards behind a wall of bodies.
"Why don't you step out from your refuge and say that in the field of play, milksop..." he shouted back with as little enthusiasm as can be.
Calmly swishing his wand right and left he decided to think about his next move, his head slowly turning to the spectator stands to give a respectful nod to San and an expressionless look to the girl sitting next to her, Evelynn.

All at once, the game was off to a start. A start that Greta missed initially. One moment, she was peering up towards Yefim, struck just by how out if place he seemed among their ranks; and yet, how completely unbothered. What was life like, she she couldn't help but wonder, when faced with such fathomless confidence? It didn't seem at all to matter to him that his strengths lay entirely elsewhere from the intellectual pursuits of chess, nor the almost artistic expression of spell work. He was here and those who fought against him would feel his prowess.
If only Greta could feel that certainty. Instead, a voice ahead had spoken in a way reminiscent of a chant. Whipping her head around, strands of wavy hair webbed about her face. Fingers darted to claw away the obscurement of her vision, revealing the horrifically luminescent approach of promised pain. She tried to start to the side, to dodge the incoming spell, but it struck her squarely in the shoulder. It twisted her off balance counter current to her direction of travel. Crying out with mixed alarm and pain, she staggered at an angle. Although she managed to stop herself from sprawling out completely—barely—she couldn't deny her embarrassment.
A tremble courses through her her off hand lifting to hold her shoulder. The pressure seemed help alleviate the lingering sting. With a white knuckles grip about her wand, she tried to calm herself, to ignore the faces in the crowd and dismiss any notions of just who might be watching her to have seen that fumble. Head in the game, Greta.

The new round started, and it brought with itself a series of new spells as both teams continued on with their strategies.
With their mind set on not letting their Queen suffer any more damage, Hanako decided to extinguish the flames that had been slowly burning Piper, avoiding her more pain coming from the fire spell. Piper had also decided that this round nobody -except that for Hanako of course- will hit her; so when Enzo's dancing feet spell came her way, the young Slytherin easily dodged out of the way.
That Tarantallegra wasn't the only spell that the opponents had decided to cast this round. Lovanna aimed at Starlee, ready to hit her with her Flipendo, but the girl managed to avoid the spell as well; two Slytherin had managed to successfully avoid being hit, but that lucky streak was about to end. Greta decided to aim her wand and cast a powerful Incendio Duo towards Opeila, hitting her right on the arm. The flames would start burning the clothes, bringing quite some damage with them, and leaving Opeila aflame for the next round.
No matter what though, the duel had to continue, and the players kept moving on the chessboard: Opeila and Percival moved forward towards their opponents, while Starlee moved to her right, covering their Queen. The other team kept their compact front, and proceeded ahead almost as if they were one thing, one army lead by their frontman Yefim; behind him stood their Queen Roberta, and Lydia had to admit that from an outsider point of view, they all looked pretty intimidating.

It was always a shame when spells missed. All that pain that could have been caused... vanished into the wind. It would be a mistake to depend on hitting every mark though, that wasn't what brought victory closer. It was staying alive, never giving up.
The closer he got to the enemy team, the more they all looked like little ants to him. They clearly never spent a day at the gym in their lives. Blondie McBangs was now under his towering shadow, receiving the brunt of his cocky grin.

”Feeling lucky?” He'd say, not pretending to care what her answer might be. Their team would need to be extremely lucky if they were going to have even a shred of a chance. Maybe a miracle. Too bad the heavens favored him.

[font=Monotype Corsiva]Enzo had readied his wand and quickly cast a spell aiming at the other queen. Then, to his great dismay the spell just went straight past her. His jaw clenched even more and he held back a angry groan along with a few choice words.
Okay, you know what screw not saying anything to them. His emoteless eyes were glued to Piper as he first called out 'Yoowhoo' to try and catch her attention, if he succeeded he would continue on sarcastically with his taunt. "Mademoiselle serpent queen, don't let that get to your head, that was your first and last time dodging a spell of mine"

Starlee had managed to drag Cash out to watch this morning, and she was finally hearing the cheers erupting from one of her best friends. She would smile, take a deep breath just like Cash was suggesting, and quickly and easily manage to dodge the spell that flew right at her. She would throw a smirk back at the girl who cast at her, and would stick her tongue out playfully. Or, well, more like a child that had won something, but still. She had successfully dodged and incoming spell, and boy was she proud.
She moved herself over to B3, and watched as Piper easily dodged another incoming spell. She was feeling pretty confident now, but then the huge towering boy stepped into the spot in front of her. She couldn't lie that she was a bit nervous, and she almost took a step back, but she quickly remembered that he was in the same position at her, bishop, so he wouldn't be able to cast at her. Of course, he could just go for the physical attack, which, judging by his physique, seemed more his speed, but that would leave him disqualified.
She took another deep breath and attempted to taunt back at him, but her voice would waver as she said, "Why, y-yes, I am." She mentally cursed as she wavered, but attempted to stand strong and look serious as the tall boy grinned down at her. She had to focus on the task at hand: Winning.

Advance. Mind your footing. Be wary of the peaks and valleys in your opponent's arms and shoulders. Keep your eyes trained on theirs lest they attempt to deceive you. Keep moving forward. Never give up. Never surrender.
As the din of their battle grew, so did her consciousness expand, and with it, her ferocity and ruthlessness would mold a determined conquerer.
It was here in the heat of battle she felt her most powerful. It was here in the forges of victory her mind was put to ease. She would practically growl to her comrades. "Give no quarter and leave none standing."

Chess Combat (Match 3)
The battlefield suddenly seemed to explode in a flurry of spells and action. Fortunately, the burning flames on Piper's robes were quickly put out by the boy next to her. "Thanks," she said, a little miffed that she hadn't been able to extinguish those herself. Now that Piper thought about it, she hadn't once been able to extinguish herself in all the times she had been set on fire. It had always been someone else who had saved her. The Slytherin clenched her jaw, despising the feeling of helplessness.
There was little time to dwell on her complaints of her rescue, however, because a spell came flying Piper's way. All it took for it to sail past her waist was a simple sidestep; the person who had cast it had had their aim way off target. Piper watched as a couple of her teammates cast spells expertly at the other team, the opposition suffering damage. Good. Her own teammates managed to dodge some otherwise damaging spells, except for Opeila. Piper had remembered her from the whole Dormbattle event. Piper flinched watching Opeila take the Incendio hit; she of all people would know that hurt.
Quickly, the second-year retreated behind two of her teammates once more. There was a certain satisfaction in having her rival stuck as her personal human shield, but no comments would be made. At least, not yet by Piper. One of the foreign students was trying to get her attention. Piper bit the line and looked his way, only for him to attempt to insult her. "Mademoiselle serpent queen, don't let that get to your head, that was your first and last time dodging a spell of mine."
Not much would be going to Piper's head except the fact that he called her "mademoiselle serpent queen." I like the ring of that. I need it framed or something. Nobody else was getting called a serpent queen. She was very special. "Please," Piper scoffed. "All it took was a step to dodge your lousy aim." Staring into his eyes, she curtsied.
Hopefully that wouldn't make him too mad; the whole team seemed like it wanted to rip the Vipers' heads off.Doing as strategized

It was still a bit of getting used to, this game. Greta had played before, but only once; and outside of these rare occurrences, chess (wizard or otherwise) was just never on the agenda. She wasn't a dullard by any means. In school, her grades were actually fairly decent. But it didn't come instinctively to her. Where some were naturally gifted, Greta had to work at it, putting in long hours and pulling out more than a few hairs. Even then, the heights of Great seemed unobtainable. Only Good was ever in reach.
The one occasion that she had played, she'd been the queen. She was very much wishing she'd spoken up and requested that again. It had afforded her a position to be far more offensive than she could be now. Aching to prove her worth as deceptively larger than her small frame might have suggested, she had to stop herself on several occasions from slinging spells down the diagonals. Even then, her wand would twitch out towards them suggestively as though quietly daring them draw nearer. In the end, though, she was forced to focus fire along the vertical and horizontal files only.
Repositioning hadn't really helped much, and she constantly shifted her focus from the enemy before to her allies nearby searching for a signal as to what she should be doing and where. But how desperately she wanted to knock that queen flat unlike the inconclusive game of yesteryear. Naturally, the moment someone had crossed into her permissible line of fire, she'd struck. Fire blazed out towards the girl, catching her arm in passing. An almost manic delight reflected for but a second in Greta's seafoam eyes before the distraction cleared and she realized her predicament. She'd been so focused on the offense that she hadn't realized the opponents had positioned themselves for an all out assault. With their Queen, Bishop and Rook positioned as they were, they could execute a three pronged attack. Was that... Intentional? Were they going to keep moving? Was their target of priority.. her??
What little colour Greta had drained from her face, her freckles like a smattering of cinnamon against unkneaded dough. Backed into a corner, this situation was anything but delicious. She wasn't the strongest. Or the most durable. She knew that. Why couldn't she have been on a team with Hanzo or the rest? Why did Niche have to leave the team just as she was joining it? Feeling quite alone among strangers, Greta faltered at the entrance to the serpent's den. Even with the boy who had previously knocked her off balance in a position before her where she could seek restitution and revenge for his earlier slight, all she could think was that she was about to have spells flying at her.
She swallowed. Hard. Forcing the lump of fear and nervous energy down into her gullet. Tears threatened to brim her eyes. Three on one was horribly frightening. It wasn't fair. The pain their mere presences promised was almost enough to send her running with her tail tucked between her legs. But if she did that... She'd never be forgiven. She would never forgive herself. She had to be brave. Besides...she was small. That had always been an advantage. It was harder to hit her. Let them try.

[font=PT Sans]Eh, he was just there so why not just help a burning girl out, no? By this round, he was starting to get fairly bored. Was he jealous of Opeila who was now the latest burning girl on their team? No, not really. But, come on, at least she got to move here and there. Him? He had been standing in the same place since the duel began. Getting sarcastic with the other team’s queen, reminding himself he didn’t have emotions so he wouldn’t get intimated, and extinguishing a person wasn’t all that exciting.
He supposed there was the girl he shot a flipendo spell at earlier. But if he recalled, they were too busy with their own problems to react to it too much. Was it too late to mock her about it? Pity. Mocking someone would really improve his mood now.
