Healer Internship

OCTAVIUS NOTICE: Please do not sign up yet until I update this thread or inform you all of a new thread
Octavius 3/15/2025: Unpinning this.
A Heads Up
This is an IC-only player opportunity with RP benefit. If for any reason I can no longer be your nurse, I cannot promise that the next nurse will be interested in continuing this program. I am continuing this program after Brumby, Frogge, and Featherstone but the next nurse might not.
The Program
On September 1st, 2021, Nurse Kelsey Brumby established the healing intern program. Fliers with information on the program were posted up on the school bulletin board as well as in the Hospital Wing, inviting students to take part in a learning opportunity where they would gain practical experience in healing. The program is for third-year students or older who had already begun learning healing spells in their classes.

For those who asked, Nurse Sabo would explain what being an intern meant. They wouldn't be learning any new spells, wouldn't get access to her potions, and would be required to be under supervision. If that fits their needs, it would be as simple as signing up and volunteering their free time. This would only be for the kind of student who either knew they were interested in becoming a healer or wanted to try and figure out whether they liked it. Dealing with patients was the most difficult part of being a healer, particularly when the tongue-tying curse was not a valid prescription in most cases.
What Can I Do?
As a healing intern, your character is volunteering their free time to help out in the hospital wing. People who disrespect the position or patients will be removed from the internship IC and/or given detention. You can always contact me to ask for godmodding permission or any questions you might have about what is allowed.

You may:
  • Say that you volunteer in the hospital wing during your free time
  • Say that you have practical/ hands-on healing experience
  • Perform healing spells on minorly wounded students in the hospital wing under supervision
You may not:
  • Perform healing spells/administer potions in the hospital wing without supervision
  • Say that you know any more healing spells/ abilities than what is already in your trunk
  • Take any potions or balms from the nurse's station without express permission
Prerequisites and Sign Up
This is currently an open position with no cap on how many partake.
Prerequisites: Must be a third year or higher, must have at least one healing spell in their trunk
How to apply: Post below the following form filled out which I will approve before you can start:
Name:
Year:
Link to trunk:
First day RP (200 words minimum):
  • You will need to post here with a 'first day' RP of at least 200 words. This will work as both explaining your motivation for taking the position and set your canon start date for working.
  • You may quit at any time, though please tell me if you're doing so. Students who are removed from index for inactivity/ deactivation will also be removed and need to re-apply to be an intern again.
  • Nurse Sabo has rules you must follow that you will be removed from your internship for breaking. If you'd like to do this for plot please contact me first!

It was a bright new year at Hogwarts, and one of the first things that Santario would find was a flyer on a bulletin board. It would not have been easy for her to miss since she was already posting flyers around the school encouraging duelling signups for all houses. It described a learning opportunity that involved being able to intern in the hospital wing!

Excitement filled the young Slytherin as she placed her own flyer on the board and started making her climb up from the basements. While a trek from the basement to the third floor usually took a few minutes, it would take her a little longer as she stopped at the board in the main hall to add her own flyer to it but seeing the internship flyer only instilled a sense of haste in her.

Technically this would not be the first time that Monsieur Brumby had met Santario, but it would be the first time he would see her uninjured while in the hospital wing. She had been in here a few times after a duel to get patched up, and of course, her infamous trip down a well that left her body broken and near death. San preferred not to dwell on those things, and she hoped that he felt the same. She remembered her mother had disliked talking about her work at Saint Mungo’s, especially when she was having an awful day, and she assumed anytime a healer saw a broken child, it was a bad day.

As she got closer to the Hospital wing, Santario realized that she had been rushing and forced herself to slow down before gently pushing open the doors. She did not really think anyone would already be in the hospital wing, but it was better to play it safe than sorry. Santario walked over to his desk with a small smile. “Greetings, Monsieur Brumby; I am Santario Martin, a third-year Slytherin. I would like to inquire more about your flyer and sign up.” Meeting the requirements would not be hard for her since she had been able to cast a healing spell since her second year, and everyone told her that she seemed more adept at it than most others.

She would listen intently as Monsieur Brumby explained precisely what being an intern meant, nodding along where it felt appropriate to do so and answering any questions he might have asked to make sure that she was able to fulfill the role properly. She would make sure to mention that she was also going to be learning Episkey a year early under the guidance of Professor Fresnel. Santario assured him that she understood that she must sign in and out every time San was going to be there and that he must be there if she were to be on duty. “Thank you, yes I would like nothing more than to participate in your internship program. My mother was a healer and she taught me as much as she could, and I find that it has become a passion of mine as well.” In a way, being here helped keep her mother’s memory close and vibrant; her legacy alive.

Santario had abandoned her thought of putting up the rest of her flyers, at least for the time being, and after filling out the required paper work she signed her name on the check-in sheet.

There was not a small number of people that would have been surprised to hear Anastasia Beckett had chosen to sign up for a healer internship. Ana herself would have certainly been among those people. In addition to the fact that she had a great deal on her plate as a Quidditch player, co-captain of the duelling team, and member of seemingly countless clubs, there was the obvious fact that her lifelong dream was to become a professional Quidditch player, not a healer. Ana of years past would have been utterly baffled at fourth year Ana's choice to sign up.

However, the truth was, as much as Ana loved Quidditch, she had witnessed a great deal of tragedy in recent years. She had also spent more than enough time in the hospital wing to understand the value of healing. Still, between the train wreck at the beginning of the year and the deaths of those students over the summer, Ana felt helpless and desperate to do some meaningful good. Upon arriving back at school, she had noticed the fliers and given it an uncharacteristic amount of thought before making her way to the hospital wing to apply.

Attack spells typically used in duelling were more Ana's forte than healing, but she saw no reason to let that stop her. She entered the hospital wing and scanned the room for the nurse before approaching him. "Pardon me, Nurse Brumby," she said as she neared. "Anastasia Beckett, fourth-year Gryffindor. If you have a moment, I'm here to further inquire about what being a healer intern means and what it entails."Introducing herself was more than likely unnecessary, what with what a frequent flyer she was, but it was always best not to assume that she stood out in the sea of students the professors and other staff at the school encountered.

The blonde mostly kept quiet as he spoke, a rare sight that indicated how serious she was about this. Her replies to any questions he may have asked were crisp and concise to allow her more time to listen to the information being conveyed. "Thank you ever so much for your time," she said when he was done speaking. "I am most definitely interested in joining the program."

Ana filled out all the necessary paperwork right then and there, thanked Nurse Brumby profusely, then signed her name on the designated sheet before continuing about her day.

Long story short, I survived

Ileen had to pull herself together not to sprint to the hospital wing, that' s how excited she was. She clutched the flyer in her hand so tightly that it was already all crumpled up. An internship at the Hospital Wing. It was as if a genie had climbed into her dreams and made one of them real. She knew practice was the next thing she needed. She had tried to get as far as possible on her own in the past two years with a little help here and there, but this year would be different. She would finally learn real healing spells in the classes and this offer was the best opportunity to practice and learn from someone who knew much more than her. Watching and learning. And then finally doing it herself - honestly, even if it was mostly about watching and doing little small things to give Mr. Brumby a hand, it was still a big step towards her dream.

All of her life Ileen had been scared to become evil. And then, in her first year she had finally heard her calling when she had spoken to Professor Artemis. Now she knew that helping and healing was her way to go. This way she could make sure not to slip and end up on the bad side. Determined as she was, she had read every book about muggle first-aid and healing spells that she had found. The ambition was there and so was the motivation. And of course, since this was Hogwarts, there were plenty of situations where a healer was required. She had learned the hard way that she was still far from being a real help, but that wouldn’t stop her or slow her down.

Arriving at her desired destination the young Slytherin looked for the Nurse. A rare and soft smile curled her lips when she spotted the man and approached him politely. “Hello Mr. Brumby.” She swallowed to get rid of the lump that had suddenly formed in her throat. Her cheeks were flushed with excitement and her hand still clutching the flyer trembled slightly. All this showed that Ileen was electrified to the tips of her hair. Rarely had the young girl been seen so excited.
She tried to keep her voice calm. She didn't want him to think she was excited and over-excited. She wanted to appear serious and trustworthy. This was important. This was crucial. And every fiber of her body was burning for it. “I found your flyer and I am interested to learn more about the internship.” Actually, it wouldn’t matter what he would tell her. She would join if he allowed her to. No matter what.
But as she listened to him, her heart skipped a beat. That was exactly what she was looking for. More even.
With a beam she thanked him after his explanation. “I’m very interested in joining the program if I may. What do I have to sign?
Ileen’s hand still trembled as she filled out the required paperwork. This was the best opportunity ever. A chance to finally make a difference.

The first day of school was always a jumble of excitement and nerves. Even though it was her third year at Hogwarts sometimes she still felt like the first year that walked through the gates for the first time, but most of the time she owned how much different she was from that time. It was truly exciting how much growth she had done, in magic and in her personal life. This year she was walking into Hogwarts as a Vice-Captain of the Hufflepuff Duelling Team, a writer for the Headliner, and a confident young witch.

An opportunity for continued growth very quickly offered itself to her as she walked past a flyer that she almost missed. A couple of other students bumped into her as she stopped in her tracks in a bustling hallway. She barely managed a mumbled "Sorry!" As she read the details of an opportunity to intern at the Hospital Wing. She always had a natural adept ability for healing, and this seemed like a wonderful step to seeing about another wizardly career that she might be interested in in the future.

After classes that day Willow excitedly bounced into the Hospital Wing to go say hi and snag a place in the internship. "Doctor Nurse Mister Brumby Sir!" She gave him a bright wave as she approached. "I came to ask about the internship opportunity?" After a brief amount of discussion she was handed some paperwork to fill out. Luckily she hadn't returned her school supplies to her dorm for the day and was able to easily procure a quill. After filling it out she returned it back to him. While the Hospital Wing still could feel cold and ominous, she also felt like it was a natural place for her to end up. This seemed like the perfect way to test out those waters of belonging.

It was certainly more than a little strange, to see Xailah Alptraum, of all students, traversing the corridor leading to the Hospital Wing; with lissome stride. Her black bootheels clicked across the chilled tiles in melodic fashion; keeping rhythm with her pace; making sure to fall in place with the supple sways of her hips. She moved in a way that demanded attention; that implied purpose. Truthfully, she was scared absolutely witless- something that was only mirrored in the thin, oblong shape of her quivering pupils; and a single tress of darkness that would occasionally, subtly, flick. Today would be the first day- since "The Incident" in early February of 2020- she would willingly step foot in the Hospital Wing. Well, willingly was a bit generous. She was consciously reluctant, and had mustered everything she had to drag herself to the infirmary.

She was here for... Why was she going again? Oh. Yes, thats right. Something about a healing internship. Xailah had no reason to even be interested in a nursing practicum. Like. At all. Her aspirations did not fall down a traditional healers path. She had no clean white shoes to fill, seeing that not one person in her family were affiliated with such groups (except for maybe just one... but one hardly counted). She herself was no healer, and she undoubtedly had no future as one. Sure she dabbled in the craft here and there- when absolutely necessary- but it was not in her true interest to mend people. Not... everyone anyway. She preferred to put her natural talent for fixing, towards objects- mainly things that couldn't die if something went wrong.

The lioness needed an excuse. What was her excuse? She thought long and hard about it, in the days prior to making her final decision. She fabricated many lies during those days, weaving them with care, and anticipation; only for the end result to be revealed as ridiculous. Yes, downright ridiculous. She couldn't go with the usual, my parents were healers and I want to follow the same path, story. Not that there was anything wrong with such stories, it was just that- Xailahs parents were... not the sort of people you would find in an clinic, tending to the ill. She possessed two metaphorical cards she could play. The first being the Silent Card, a long time favorite for a number of reasons; it was the one card she kept close always. When played, it enabled her to avoid any and all questioning, just by keeping her mouth shut. So long as the person on the other end of the encounter was "polite", she could get away with practically anything.

The second was a Truth Card, which was starting to see much more use, now, than it had in her early life. Unlike the other card, the Truth card was inconsistent- truths varied depending on the situation. She had two main truths for this hospital mess- three, if curiosity was counted, but that was practically a given- she wanted to better understand the curse that had infected the student body. Track any changes, learn it. She also (and this was the big reason) wanted to learn basic first aid. That way, if someone she honestly, truly cared for, was harmed in some way; she would have a chance to possibly save them. That was all. Nothing more to it. Those were her reaso- excuses. A silly thing to plan and get all worked up about, if you think about it. Yes, she had a plan- it looked something along the lines of: play the given cards, expect the absolute worst, (but hope for the best, or second best) and if all else fails, draw 25.

So yes, one could say she intended to join the internship with ulterior motives. Because that was exactly what she was doing. There was no other way around it. In time, Xailah would make her way to the entrance of the infirmary. She paused outside the doorway, and placed one clothed hand against the wooden frame, as a brace. She leaned, cautiously poking her head in to scan the room before entering. Her gaze flicked about, her rounded golds flitting this way and that, like an animal inspecting the interior of a cage, or some other unfamiliar confine. She pressed her lips together, and dampened them, before calling for someone. "Nurse Brumby...?" Ooh. She sneered. First time saying that name. The rich, bell-like tune wavered at the end, forming something that sounded like a question. That won't do. Try again. Don't let him know you're scared of this place. And then again, this time clearer; more confident. "Nurse Brumby." The rich sound carried. She took a step in. But not more. She paused; stood stock still. Inhale. Exhale.

Her eyes fell onto a spot on the tile underfoot, that had been filthied with the imprint of a memory. It was the spot where she had fallen, when she had- in a moment of outright stupidity- had gone to aid her peers in their struggle against corrupt authority. She found some warmth in the memory of camaraderie. She also found some fear. But the warmth derived from the idea, easily outweighed the fear. Her lips pinched slightly, in the tiniest smile. Her attention moved from the spot, and drifted, this time in a more relaxed manner. Xailah was feeling the room, sampling it's energy. It was still unsettling, even with Finlay gone, but that was simply the nature of hospital-like places. They were all wrong in some way. You couldn't always see why, but the quality could always be felt. "I'm here about the internship." Smooth; sharp; straight to the point.

Opeila didn't want to be a healer, she really didn't. Medicine, potions, herbs, that had been her mother's area of expertise, maybe her grandmother's too. Certainly not the young third year's. And yet the flyer that had been posted on the first day, inviting the students to become a healing intern kind of hooked Opeila. She had been reading ahead in her schoolbooks in summer and learned a useful spell then, a bandaging spell. It was that kind of spell the third year had always found they were lacking in class.

Every few weeks they were attacked by whatever decided to roam the castle now, and while they did learn some good spells to fight, they were not taught to help themselves when they lost said fight. Maybe this spell could have helped her back in January when she had ripped her jacket into pieces to bandage Vladimir and herself with them. Maybe it was the knowledge of that lack that brought her to decide to sign up, the knowledge that she could be helping some kids if they couldn't. And who knew, maybe, quite likely even she would learn some more things about healing through that internship. Students needed more knowledge of healing, whether they wanted to be a healer one day or not.

Opeila would not be passing on this chance, especially after she had seen what she had only a few days ago. A boy who was supposed to be dead, buried a year ago, was now just... back. While she knew it was something she maybe should have been relieved or happy about, she simply couldn't be. The dead were meant to stay dead. When they suddenly started to arise, it couldn't mean anything good.

The third year had the feeling that they would all need the ability to help themselves more than ever, especially as said living dead student slept only few meters away from her own dorm. Even closer to her best friend.
So on the first Saturday after their return, Opeila entered the hospital wing. "Mr Brumby?"

She would step further into the hospital wing until she found the nurse. "Hello, Mr Brumby, I am here about the internship.", she explained, "If it is still possible, I would like to participate."

The new year. For some a new year meant a new them or resolutions but for others it meant a new fear or sense of dread.

Henry found himself mauling over the healer internship for months on end since the fall ball and conversation that the lad shared with the nurse. He never been a fan of hospitals or healers, finding their presence creepy and ever so cold. Usually sending a shiver down his spine at the thought. To this day he still finds Nurse Brumby to be a threatening and nerve rattling person but his anxiety seemed to be at bay as his mind seem interested in the idea of healing others.

The teen walked through the corridors, Loki at his heels as he remembered the moment at the ball where he offered help and support to his fellow student. Staying on thr sideways yet aiding in the chaos and fight as much as the spellcasters or knife wheelers.

The teen remembered that warmth that filled him watching others gain strength or courage from a simple healing charm or bandage, the hope given when someone is healed is a wonder to behold. A wonder that captured that likes of the third year and edged him to look further into a path that he found his anxiety thundering at and heatt thumping loudly with every step he took closer to the hospital wing.

The teen thought he realized what he wanted, thought that he knew what his career path would be. A magizoologist since he always loved creatures. However, now after that fall ball experience where he offered a healing charms and bandages to his fellow students. The teen is mow more confused with his future and life after hogwarts than before, a healer or a magizoologist. Unsure if werewolves can even choose healer as a profession. The teen took the nurse's advice to heart all those months ago, it doesn't matter what abother thinks of you only that you are their option to help them.

Nodding to himself as he stood outside the doors the hospital wing, Henry took a deeo breath. Reminding himself that school is the place to take chances, to try new things and see what you like to do or not like to do. With another breath, the teen pushed opened the doors and walked in with Loki at his heels.

The teen looked around, a shiver struck his spine. Taking slow breaths to calm his emotions as he walked further into the hospital wing. Eyes darting around for thr nurse, passing beds that could be filled of injured students at a momenr noticed.

The teen spotted the nurse after a while, took a breath than walked over to the man with Loki at his heels. Henry offered a soft smile, looking at the nurse's eyes as he spoke"hello, mister Brumby. I'm not sure if you remember me, I'm Henry Knight. A third year slytherin," a pause as he couldn't believe that he was doing this before continuing"I thought a bit after our conversation and if there's still open spot and you would allow me to, I would like to become one of your interns here at the hospital wing." Henry Knight, a werewolf as a healer. Sounds unheard of but than again everything needs a first.

It had been nagging at her for a while now, this feeling that perhaps she ought to sign up for the Healer internship she'd heard so much about.

Aly had first found out about the internship, fittingly enough, in the very Hospital Wing into which she was now stepping, nervously red-faced, the scarlet flush drowning out her freckles. Back in November, she'd stopped into the arch-ceilinged room quite a few times, sometimes for herself and sometimes escorting teammates, but always post-Quidditch practices gone wrong. During one of these visits, she'd discovered the magic that was a band-aid - or, well, a plaster, as she'd just found out they could also be called - and had come back later, uninjured, to beg some more from the nurse.

She still carried the box Nurse Brumby had given her that day around with her everywhere, usually tucked into the third-year's satchel right alongside her precious flowers. That day had also been when the nurse had mentioned the internship whilst giving up a tin of the Muggle bandages - not preachingly, but just a passing mention, really. Still, the internship had been on Aly's mind ever since.

Of course, the main reason that she had stayed away and not yet signed up was that she honestly hadn't been quite sure if she'd wanted to be a Healer or not. A bit of research had turned up that Healers had to be skilled at Potions and Transfiguration, which were notoriously two of the curly-haired Ravenclaw's worst subjects, although she'd been studying hard at them more recently and had been doing passably better. But after a few good grades in Potions, one too many Quidditch injuries (obtained both by herself and by her friends), and a certain few recent incidents... well, her mind had been inching closer and closer to the decision that perhaps a career as a Healer could be worth looking into after all. Aly had always loved the idea of healing magic and helping others, and it was a respectable job; what was keeping her from at least checking it out? She'd stopped by a few days before to pick up the paperwork, and now it was carefully filled out, folded in two, and stowed in her satchel right next to the box of plasters that had started this whole thing.

Trying to breathe and calm her nerves - why was she nervous, anyway? The worst he can do is turn me down - Aly scanned the room for Nurse Brumby's light brown hair and tell-tale uniform that marked him as the school nurse. Finding him quickly, she crossed the room to him and waited until he was free before stepping into his field of vision with a small, cheerful wave.

"Hello - Nurse Brumby?" she started, fumbling fingers searching in her satchel for the put-away paperwork she'd placed in there earlier. "I thought I'd, er, stop in and return this? Well, it's not really returning, since it's all filled out. I've decided I'd like to apply for the internship you mentioned a while back - if there's still a spot, that is. In fact-" she took a deep breath, then looked up to meet the nurse's eyes with an apprehensive smile- "I think I may like to someday be a Healer. So I think this would be a great way to start learning about all a Healer career has to offer."

Her fingers finally finding the file of parchments she'd folded and packed precisely into the bag, Aly withdrew the paperwork, straightened out the crease on a nearby table, and held it out to the nurse.

"If you'll have me as an intern, of course."

Out of any student in school, Selim likely would be assumed as one of the last people to sign up for a healing internship. Of course, the fact that he was likely subverting many people's expectations was mildly amusing, but he was mostly doing it for the knowledge, not for something as whimsical as helping people out of the goodness of his heart, not because he wanted to protect 'friends' of which he had none, nor to protect 'family' seeing as how he had no family at Hogwarts, not anymore, at least, and that was honestly for the best.

He was also trying not to add to the problem of students injuring and hurting each other during whatever dark events might spring up out of the woodwork of this school. No, rather he was attempting to subtract from it, to subtract from students regularly facing the abyss of death. After all, there was already far more death at this school than there should be at a, well, a literal school.

Perhaps he could knock some sense into a few skulls during this internship. However long it, or Nurse Brumby, lasted at Hogwarts.

He wouldn't be the best healer to encounter at the school though, after all, he hardly cared about bedside manners and was willing to take full advantage of not having some Hippocratic oath to follow if need be. He wasn't going to not defend himself, or other students if he had to simply because he was also a healer.

Anyhow, he had told the Nurse he would join after the disastrous fall festival, so here he was, doing exactly that. Hell, he had even asked the Shimadas to send him a few doctor's robes to play the part. It was long past the time for him to switch up his style anyways, and they were actually rather comfortable. Underneath were some simple dark lounging clothes, and under those was bandaging, largely around his neck, his arms, and one hand. Yes, he had taken to hiding the scars once again, to dispel or restrict any urges he may have to itch at any within reach. It was for the best.

Rabbit mask hiding his facial features, as per usual, he walked into the hospital wing, papers clutched lightly in one hand as he made his way to the desk. He had the forms already, had taken them to his dorm to study them thoroughly, to look for fine print, or loopholes either her or the one enforcing them could exploit. He had actually found some of the latter, in fact.

Whether he'd use them or not was up to debate though.

With everything signed in his scrawling writing, he walked over to the desk, placing them down easily. Sharp yellow gaze hidden by shadows, he blinked and nodded. "I look forward to learning." He could only assist with his muggle first aid skills and the store of medical knowledge he had gathered... and one single healing spell that backfired on him more often than not, but he was sure the mand would appreciate all these extra hands nonetheless.

Left him to enjoy whatever festivities that may happen at Hogwarts without being the only person to heal reckless children when things took a turn for the worse as well.

With that now finished, he was now a 'healing intern'.

It'd definitely be an... interesting, chapter in his life.
