Dear Simon,
I know that we don't know each other terribly well, but I still consider you a friend. I don't have many close friends at Hogwarts, but you are one of them.
As such, I wanted to keep in touch this summer, to let you know what's been going on with me, and find out what's up with you lately.
I'm writing this from Houston, Texas, because my mom has cancer. And because she is a Muggle, we could not get into St. Mungo's. This was the next best place for cancer treatment, as all the doctors in the UK gave up on her case… Her cancer is very severe.
So that's what's been up with me. What about you? How is your aunt? I know it's early in the summer, but how is it going so far? I'd love to hear from you.
I'm sending this by Muggle post, so I don't know how long it will take to arrive. But if you have an owl, feel free to send it back this way, and I will write you another letter using the owl.

To my good friend, Alexa,
Let me begin by saying...I don't know how to put in words what I'm feeling. I'm deeply saddened to hear the news of your mother - for her and for you and anyone else it affects. I personally know the heartache that this tragic disease can cause.
You know, I was thinking just the other day about life after Hogwarts. I know I still have many years left to go but part of me wants to maybe go into the medical field. A bit crazy, I know...all things considering, but you never know. Perhaps it could be possible. Perhaps I could make a difference to those that need it. To patients and their families.
You'll be in my thoughts and you both will be in my prayers. I know at a time like this some tend to be angry with God but try to remember that he is neither an ultimate guardian angel who shields us from all pain nor a genie that can grant people all their wishes. He is loving and he will join you to face these trials. Maybe this isn't the time or place to suggest such matters. I know it can be a touchy subject for some.
Know that I'm here. I'm here for you to call, to write, - to say anything or just hang on the line with you because you need someone there. I'll write my number at the bottom of this letter. Call me - any time at all. You will never impose.
For me, summer is going well. I'll be attending Summer Camp soon at Hogwarts but I must say it has been good to catch up with Aunt Maggie. She's her same self and that's fantastic, although I do wish she'd take a little more time for herself. It's always work work work.
I've decided to try and take up a new hobby this coming year - drawing. Well, drawing or sketching. Are those the same? I'm not really sure how to go about beginning how to learn it - maybe just by practicing but I'm sure there's some techniques to learn to get me started. Perhaps a trip to the library is in order before Summer Camp.
