Avery was finally able to catch a break in his schedule to come to the library this afternoon for the first time. The first few days at Hogwarts have been hectic, with all sorts of new classes that he'd never taken in his life filled with spells and concepts he never knew existed. He could hardly find his bearings to arrive in class on time, with all those moving staircases and paintings that had too much of a social life to be useful landmarks.

He pushed open the large door with the silver doorknob, stepping into a light-filled hallway with soaring shelves on either side, then shelves as far as the eye could see....this was a very real type of heaven! Avery had thought he'd be in Ravenclaw when he got sorted, but alas, it wasn't written in his destiny. At least this entire library was his to explore. The boy knew exactly what he was looking for.

"Excuse me," he said to one of the house elves passing by, as he assumed they knew what they were doing, "do you happen to know where I can find books about magical music?" The house elf pointed him in the right direction, and he nodded his thanks with a smile. The section was next to a high window with a warm afternoon light -- perfect. What a good place to settle in. He ran his finger along the books and pulled one out: "Violent Violinists". That sounded a bit scary, but he had to give the author credit for coming up with a catchy title.

He settled into a reading chair under the window, and opened the book, excited and scared at the same time to see what information it might divulge.

A new year at Hogwarts. Henry Knight was now a third year back for another year at Hogwarts after a chaotic but fun summer holiday.

The young teen now had a step family and Rose was officially his step sister. They returned to godric hollow and he got to spend most of his days wirh Scarlett and Rose this summer holiday. He studied and read books ahead of his current year, determined to be prepared and focused for the dueling season that year. His elder brother and him started to do karate together, Henry wasn't good but it helped him fill in and build muscles.

The blue eye thirteen year old was now five feet and six inches and started to fill in a bit, along with build some muscles although his voice was still a bit higher than normal in its classic british accent and he had no hair not even peach fuzz. But his dark brown hair was still a but messy and looked like it could go for a trim.

The one part the teen didn't like was over the summer holiday, during one brutal transformation he gave himself a scar along his right should running down to his bicep. So that meant he mainly worse long sleeves now to hide the second scar from others.

Hogwarts just started and Henry stepped inside the library with his orange feline; Loki as usual. The teen walked through the rows for a bit searching for books until he found a total of four of them, each about a different topic.

Henry then spotted a table with a single boy with black hair, Henry thought he remembered him from the sorting ceremony that year. He was a slytherin also right? Henry didn't care for house and approached his table with Loki on his heels, eyeing his book as he spoke" do you play violin as well?" The teen definitely gained in confidence since that summer holiday as he offered a hand and his tradition kind smile continuing" I'm Henry and this is Loki," nodding toward his feline friend before back at the boy as and asked" mind if we joined you?"

He thumbed through the book to the table of contents, and was amused to find that several famous violinists were actually wizards with magically violent stories -- who would've thought! It seemed that there was so much more to music history that he didn't know. Intrigued, the pre-teen flipped through the pages slowly. The afternoon glow was comforting, catching his black messy hair so that it shone a bit warmer than usual, creating a relaxing atmosphere that helped the young boy settle in despite his unfamiliar surroundings.

Just as he was getting to the story of a dark magic violinist who often enchanted unsuspecting listeners to his lair, he saw someone approaching from the corner of his eye. "Do you play violin as well?" the older boy asked, before introducing himself as Henry and his ginger cat as Loki.

"Oh sure, feel free to join me," Avery said, and hastily made some room by gathering his things, which were messily splayed out. Judging from the boy's height and build, Henry was likely the first upperclassman that he's met so far, and he didn't want to make a bad impression in front of his seniors. He steadied himself before responding. "My name's Avery, by the way, and I'm a first year Slytherin," he said, shaking Henry's hand and then smiling at Loki, who actually seemed very well-behaved, unlike his neighborhood's irritable cats. "Yup, I've played the violin for as long as I can remember," he laughed softly. "But it's kind of a love-hate relationship." He wasn't quite sure why he divulged that last part, but violin was a big part of his life and a side of him he was willing to share with others, if they had any interest. Henry implied that he played the violin as well, and it was interesting to find that there was someone at a magical school who he had something in common with.

For some reason, the older boy had a presence that made Avery willing to share his thoughts in this quiet, contemplative library. "Now that I'm at Hogwarts, it feels like everything I've known my entire life has a different side to it that I never knew about, and it's exciting but nerve-racking at the same time," he mused. He knew music had a way of capturing and illustrating his emotions, but now he vaguely wondered if there was actually a magical element to it. "What year are you in and what was it like when you first came to Hogwarts?" he asked, wondering if others' lives were also changed upon setting foot on campus and being introduced to so many people and new things.

"Thanks," Henry replied and took the seat across from the younger boy, setting his books in neat stack besides him. Loki would approach the boy from the ground, sniff him once then give his short approval meow.

"That means he likes you and you can pet him if you want," Henry explained to the boy while Loki stayed by his feet for a few moments before turning and walking back to Henry. Jumping up on the chair besides his owner and sitting down, his amber eyes traveled back and fourth of his owner to the first year almost like he was listening to their conversation.

Henry looked into the boy's brown eyes as he spoke, introduced himself as Avery; a first year slytherin and the young teen nodded as he spoke" pleasure to meet you, mate," before letting him continue speaking about the violin and how long he played the instrument for. However what peaked the teen's mind was his comment on the violin, that he had a complicated relationship with it. That sounded rather familiar to the blue eyed teen.

Henry waited till he finished before smiling softly and speaking" I played it for a few years as well, I have a complicated relationship with the instrument to. Would you mind me asking why do you have a complicated relationship with the violin?" Henry smiled as his blue eyes filled with kindness gazed over the Asian British boy. Black hair that grown in different ways in each part and chocolate brown eyes. A face and name that Henry wouldn't forget quickly.

Henry listened to his next comment, about hogwarts and about everything being new. The third year thought he might be a muggleborn or halfblood not that Henry minded, his girlfriend and a few of his closest friends were muggleborn after all.

Henry smiled lightly and allowed Avery to finished before asking" I reckon your muggleborn, Avery?" Henry smiled lightly letting the boy answer before saying" I'm pureblood but sole of my best mates are muggleborns and there more brilliant than pureblood's at times. If you need any help through with hogwarts or magic or have all questions, you can always ask me," Henry smiled a little at the first year always having a liking to help others. Especially now that he has younger siblings or step siblings, the teen has taking a liking to helping others and mentoring them.

Henry heard his question and figured he should have said thay before as he spoke" I'm a third year, duelist and my first year at Hogwarts was sort of boring. I met my best friends that year but stayed in the library most days and skipped nearly all social interactions," Henry was rather a anxious and shy first year back then and looking back was not a good memory for him as he smiled toward Avery and spoke" but you'll have a great first year, Avery. Do you have any hobbies or favorite classes yet?"

Loki approached him and Avery was happy to pet the ginger cat, who was very adorable and well-mannered. After their friendly greeting, Loki bounded back to a nearby chair.

He listened as Henry briefly explained his own violin experience and asked about Avery's love-hate relationship with his violin -- it's something that he'd been dwelling on for the past year, possibly the result of becoming a more independently-minded pre-teen after having been a very disciplined child growing up. "Well, how do I put it," he began with a reminiscing sigh. "I really love music and practically grew up with it. Playing the violin is a great way to relax when you need an emotional outlet, and it's also fun when you want the challenge of learning a new piece, you know? My mom is a musician and she has really high expectations for me. Practice could be hours a day, anything less is 'being lazy', and mistakes can be unacceptable." Mentally, he recounted times when he'd receive bow whips to the forearm either from his mom or his tutor. What hurt most was the emotional sting rather than the physical one, which was rather harmless; they stunned more than injured. It was a reminder that you failed and a warning to not make mistakes again, which could sometimes worsen his anxiety into making another mistake, continuing the vicious cycle.

"Sometimes, it's almost as if you could never be good enough because you weren't perfect, and how well I did seemed to translate into how good of a person I was, which made it kind of intimidating," he explained. "I love violin, but sometimes it really makes me doubt myself." Looking back, it seemed that the disciplinary pressure from the adults in his life only dulled his passion for the instrument rather than enforced it. There would be times when he dreaded picking up the instrument. He gave a small laugh, "I'm not sure if I'm even making any sense, I'm just thinking aloud now."

"Yes, I'm muggle-born," he answered, relieved that Henry was so considerate in thinking so highly of his muggle-born friends. "And thanks for offering to help, Henry. I'll definitely have a lot of questions and now I finally know who I can come to!" That was so nice of him! Immediately, he felt like he had an ally, and in his own house, too!... Slytherin seemed a lot less cold all of a sudden.

Avery listened as Henry described his first year. Sometimes it just took a bit of time to get into the groove of things, huh? Avery could totally relate; starting things was hard, but once you found your place and a good foothold, things get a lot better. Regarding hobbies and favorite classes... "Transfiguration is the coolest and strangest thing ever," he exclaimed, "just the idea that items can transform into other things just baffles me. I'm not sure if third-years are able to do it, but if you were an animagi, what kind of animal do you think you'd be?"

Henry listened to Avery's words on the violin and his relationship with the instrument. Henry took mental notes on how the first year enjoyed playing and it served has a emotional outlet but also challenge before explaining that his mother pushed him to be the best. Henry understood that, slightly.

The young teen nodded to him choosing not to interrupt. He sort of understood having to perfect something, after all he only started playing the violin himself because his father wanted him to and then went on to wanting his youngest son to be perfect at the instrument. Even if he never gave the time to listen to him play or anything.

Henry listened to Avery and realized that the boy compared himself to the instrument. He saw himself in the violin, he compared himself to his skill with the instrument. Henry nodded and when he asked his final question, claiming to be thinking out loud the young teen smiled softly and spoke" that does actually make sense, did you choose to play or was it your mother who asked you to play? My father was the one who got me to play and at first I hated it slowly I started to enjoy it but you see yourself in the violin and you skill, correct? I can help you with that and now at Hogwarts, it gives you a opportunity to discover new choices without your parents overlooking again I can help you Avery." Henry smiled at the first yea determined to help him through his Hogwarts years, they may have just met and Avery might have been younger but Henry knew he would remain by his side for time to come.

So the boy is a muggleborn, not that it bothered Henry at all and he would smiled to his next words. Waiting for him to fished before adding" I'm always there when you need help," that was the truth, he would try his best to help Avery and answer all of his questions no matter how many the boy might have.

Then their conversation changed to Transfiguration and Henry smiled, listening to the boy however his mind would flicker a little at the mention of animagus. Jumping to his lost twin sister, a old promise, and being a werewolf however Henry his these emotions only showing a smile as he spoke" Transfiguration is amazing to me also, I have always loved the class and if you want we can have study sessions together?" Smiling toward the boy before taking a breath and hearing himself say" if I was a animagus then perhaps a red fox, the animal connects to a special memory for me. And what animal would you choose?"

Avery pondered Henry's question about whether he chose to play or if his mother was the one who influence him to do so. Hmm, that was a good question. "Similar to you and your father, my mother was the one who told me to pick up the violin when I was young. It was just something I decided must be done, like a chore, but as I learned more about music and found out I could be good at it, I guess I developed my confidence and passion for music." He supposed that when he was younger, he didn't really understand the complexities of music and the emotions it could draw, but as he grew older, it was easier to identify with the pieces he played and the feelings they could communicate. Perhaps others could relate.

His mood brightened as Henry offered to help him along his journey. Yes, it really was a good opportunity for self-discovery now that he was at Hogwarts, away from his confusions from parental influence. "Thanks, Henry," he said. "I think I could really use the help of friends and classmates to learn a bit more about myself and where I'm headed. There are still many years in life ahead of us, aren't there? I guess a little companionship and encouragement can go a long way for anybody." It was difficult to stay optimistic sometimes, but he guessed that's what friends were for.

Yes, transfiguration was actually quite exciting, and he was glad Henry shared his excitement. "Yes, it would be great to study together -- I'd be honored to practice with an upperclassman!" he exclaimed, eyes wide. Perhaps he'd even be able to see some third-year magic that would quite literally blow his socks off. He laughed inwardly about the prospect.

When Henry mentioned he might be a red fox, Avery could somehow see it. It was a limber animal with poise and -- in stories at least -- crafty intelligence. "What kind of special memory does the red fox evoke for you?" he asked, curious to learn a bit more about the third-year.

As to what kind of animal Avery would be, he considered the question. "I'm not sure, but maybe something similar to an Arabian horse, since I feel like I can be pretty stubborn sometimes, when I've set my mind to something," he laughed softly. Yes, that was one of his best and worst traits; headstrong in determination but sometimes not knowing when to change course.

Henry listened to Avery's answer, were the two more alike then what meets the eye? They both were told to play by their parents and then after formed a liking or passion for the instrument.

Henry nodded to his words with a smile unsure what to say next as their conversation continued. However when the boy would say his next words, saying about how many years they had ahead of them and discussing friendship that allowed the young teen to smile and look into Avery's brown eyes. Blue meeting brown.

Henry would wait for him to finish speaking before smiling gently and replying" I'll love to help you Avery with anything we need for all your years at Hogwarts and were friends, right? I promise to remain by your side then," the young teen smiled glad that he went to the library that day and met Avery. Even with their age difference, he was determined to be friends with the boy. Plus being older only meant Henry could help him with different topics and questions.

When studying together came up, Henry smiled toward Avery's words taken back but still smiling as he spoke" and I'll be honored to study with a first year as intelligent as yourself," then a moment away his eyes would flicker sideways around them before he would pull his mayhaw wood wand from his pocket and fiddle with it as he asked" would you like to see a spell? Maybe I could teach you it later?" Henry smiled at Avery as Loki watched from his chair. His amber eyes flickering between the two boys.

Animagus popped back in and Henry heard his question. Dropping his eyes to his wand as he fiddled with it, taking breaths. The young teen took a breath and figured he should tell him as he softly spoke" red foxes always amazed me with their body structure and intellect and they embody my smarts I guess," taking a pause as he looked from his was then moved his eyes to Avery as he continued" but I choose a red fox because years before Hogwarts, when I was 6 I had a toy fox. My twin and I would imagined being the animals that our toys were and my brother told us about animagus first and my mother supported us in becoming them." Henry smiled a little and looked down as flickers of memories flashed over his eyes.

He held his wand down and looked back up at Avery as he spoke" well that was long ago before my mum died and my father married my step mum, don't feel bad alright," Henry never liked pity or other feeling sad for him as he listened to Avery. Nodding with a smile when he finished and replying" Arabian horses are wicked creatures and determination is a brilliant trait mate."

"Yes, friends," Avery nodded and smiled, glad that he had made his first upperclassman friend. He was very grateful that Henry had come to join him at this nook in the library. He seemed like a sincere and caring person.

Avery's eyes widened at the prospect of being able to see a spell and possibly learn one. "That would be awesome!" he responded, barely able to contain his excitement. Any spell would completely blow his mind away at this point. Would the wand in the boy's wand be able to summon light? Could a flame shoot out? he wondered, completely forgetting that they were in the library surrounded by very flammable books.

Avery listened as Henry explained his story behind the red fox and his mother, which was a sad story to learn. Avery couldn't imagine what it would be like to lose a parent as a child; there was obviously a lot to Henry's past that you couldn't tell just by looking at the kind teenaged boy. "I'm so sorry to hear that your mom passed," he said, eyes solemn. "But what's it like having a twin?" he asked. "Are the two of you close, and are they at Hogwarts too?" It must be nice having a family member of the same age, so you'd have a lot of commonality and support if you needed it.

Henry smiled and returned the nod when he heard Avery's words, almost confirming that they were indeed friends. Even through the boy was a first year and Henry was a third year, that didn't matter at least not to Henry. He was only glad to have another friend and saw the year difference as a good thing, he could offer help and advice to Avery now.

Henry's smiled widened when he heard his words about trying a spell and naturally his eyes wandered around them, looking for any prefects or professors before turning back toward Avery as he spoke" so I learned this last year even through it's a third year spell. It's the summoning charm; Accio and if you want I can teach you it," Loki watched as his owner rose from his seat and took a single book and walking toward the table besides them and placing it down on it. Giving the book a slight push to slide it toward the other side of the table, nodding at his work before going back to their table and taking a seat.

Henry nodded at Avery with a smile and pulled out his wand, holding it low as he whispered"Accio book," the book then came back toward him and Henry could catch it in his free hand. Placing the book back into his neat pile then tucking his wand back inside his jacket pocket as he turned to Avery with a smile and asked" so what do you think?"

Henry smiled toward Avery glad that he went to the library that day and asked the first year if he could join him. The teen enjoyed his presence
and felt different around him, he thought the two would become good friends but there was something else. Something almost telling Henry to help the boy. To answer his questions. To look out for him. To mentor him.

Henry heard his next few questions, on his dead mum and twin. Henry felt awkward and decided to start with the non awkward question first as he softly spoke" thanks but don't feel sorry, really I'm fine. Anyway I now have a stepmum and five step siblings who are all here at Hogwarts so," not Henry's favorite part of the summer but still it was something and it wasn't as awkward. The teen cast his eyes to the passing students, a few of them looked at him strangely before hurrying away.

Henry took a breath and moved his blue eyes to Avery's brown ones, another moment then the teen spoke softly" my twin is a squib, meaning she doesn't have magic and is currently missing," the words didn't feel right coming from his mouth and Loki look over his owner who continued" I got a howler, uh a letter that screams last year from my father telling me this so a few students know." Henry felt even worse saying the words to someone he liked and considered a friend and wanted to help as he shook his head and smiled a little, asking" enough about me, have any other questions Avery?"
