A Summer Correspondence

Dear Lucia,
First of all, I must sincerely apologize for becoming so distant this past year. Between Simon and Alina leaving, my parents' divorce, the selling of the farm, and more, I seem to have distanced myself from everyone… And that's not fair, especially to my best friend.
I'm writing this letter because I miss you, and I want to reconnect as friends. You've been so supportive of all of my problems, including cheering me on all those times I lost at dueling, ha ha. So please, tell me everything that's going on with you. And I will do the same from my end.
So I didn't tell you before I left, because I only got the letter from my father the day before the Hogwarts Express came, but my mother is very sick. She has something called cancer; I don't know how well-known it is in the wizarding world. But it suddenly occurs to me: I've never asked you if you had wizard and witch parents, or Muggle parents. Or both, I guess. I'm a Muggle-born, so we couldn't get mom into St. Mungo's. So we've come to Texas in America for some doctors who are willing to help her.
Also, I have some, somewhat big news as well. I don't think I ever told you, or anyone for that matter, but I have had feelings for Henry Knight, for a while now. And it turns out (and I found this out the day I got the letter from my dad) that he – Henry that is – has feelings for me too! It's crazy, and the timing is terrible because of mom, but at the same time I'm so happy about that.
Anyway, I just wanted to see how you were doing, and what you were up to this summer. I'm sending this by Muggle mail because I don't have an owl, but feel free to send an owl back, so we can write to each other more quickly. Owls are way better than Muggle mail.
Miss you,
Alexa

Alexa,
Hello!! I missed you on the train; I meant to ask if you wanted to stay with me over the summer but I couldn't see you anywhere. It's okay... I know this year has been hard for you. I'm glad we're still best friends though. Anyway, you have no idea how surprised Ebony was when she saw your letter. Nobody's ever written to me before so I had to explain that I recognised your handwriting.
I miss you too. I wish I could Do you want to I miss you too. And don't worry about it, it would have been fun cheering you on whether you won or lost. (Although, admittedly, it might have been nice to go without the trips to the Hospital Wing afterwards.) I will try to explain everything that's happening for me. Something rather big happened about a week ago, but I don't really feel like explaining it in a letter right now. I'm still trying to process it, I guess. Do you understand? I'll tell you at some point though, I promise.
I've heard of cancer. I read about it, in a Muggle book. I don't know much about it, but Merlin's beard do I know that it's something nobody wants to be dealing with. Merlin, I'm so sorry, Alexa. They should have let her into St Mungo's - I don't care that she's a Muggle, they shouldn't just leave her!
I never really thought about how they don't let Muggles in before.
Well, you know that my father's family is pureblood, the Foxes. Did I not tell you about my mother's? Well, Ebony is a ha pureblood as well, which makes me one too. She comes from the Baxter line, which isn't really as well-known as the Foxes so there's not much point looking for it anywhere. You might find an old family tree or something but nothing recent.
I really, really, really hope your mum gets better. If there's anything I can do - a place for you to stay over here if you need to get away, chocolate frog deliveries, anything - tell me and I'll do my best. I can't promise much, especially since your mum's a Muggle so I doubt Ebony would let me do anything huge but I'll really try, I swear I will.
Oh. My. Merlin's. Beard. Henry Knight. Henry. Knight. Merlin's wand, I never even guessed! I'm a little disappointed in myself now for not realising. He's really nice, Henry. I know him a little, and he's friends with Logan - you know Logan? From duelling - so he can't be that bad. I want regular updates Alexa, you here me? Also I want quotations from his letters if he's writing to you.
Sending this back with an owl from the Post Office. You'll have to pay him a couple of knuts to write back by return flight.
Your friend best friend,
Lucia

Hi Lucia,
I’m sorry I missed you on the train; I was kind of wrapped up in my own thoughts I didn’t really notice what was going on. I was way in the back. If we get back in time, and summer is still going on, I would love to visit! I would invite you as well, but I don’t know where we are going to be staying when we come home.
Ebony, that’s your mom? Why do you call her Ebony? I’m glad I wrote to you, And that you responded so quickly; owls are great. But my dad was very surprised to see one waiting at our window in the hotel! Haven’t seen him looked so shocked in a while. Actually made me smile, which I haven’t seem to be doing a lot of lately.
Ha ha, thank you about the dueling. I promise I will be a better supporter for you this year! Too bad we aren’t on a team together, but maybe that’s good, since I seem to be bad luck!
Whatever it was that happened last week that was a big, I hope it’s OK… I hope you’re OK. Let me know whenever you’re ready to talk about it, I definitely understand not being ready.
Yeah, I don’t understand it myself. If you were a healer, wouldn’t you want to cure everyone, not just wizards and witches? Shows what I know. And thank you for saying that, it means a lot.
I knew you were a pureblood, but we really haven’t talked much about our respective families. Thanks about my mom. I’m sure I’ll take you up on any of those things, particularly the visit and the chocolate! Don’t worry if you can’t do anything; Just knowing you’re there helps.
Yeah, Henry Knight! We have a lot in common, and I’ve liked him for a while. Yeah, Logan is his best friend, and besides from dueling, I met her in the library and we talked once.
I’ll definitely do regular updates. Mother is… Holding steady, I suppose. Maybe a little bit worse. They started some medicine that’s supposed to beat the cancer, but also makes her more sick than she already is. Definitely a double-edged sword. I don’t know where I heard that, maybe dad? Maybe I read it somewhere? Anyway, we just have to hope the medicine helps before it hurts, if that makes sense.
I’ll give you quotations from his next letter! He’s just being really supportive now, which is really nice. He says he loves me… I care about him a great deal, but I’m not sure I know what love feels like yet, you know? Worries me a little bit. What if I just don’t know how to love right?
Anyway, you’ll have to let me know how you are, how are your parents and family are. I await your letter excitedly!
Your best friend,
Alexa

A Summer Correspondence
Dear Alexa,
It's just what I call her, I guess. Apparently she used to call her mother by her first name, so it would have felt strange for us not to do that for her. You know? I know it's a bit different, but that's just what we call her, I guess.
Yes. I think the reasoning behind it is that Muggles have their own methods of healing, so so do we - and after all, magic and technology don't mix. I asked Ebony, and she said that Muggles probably wouldn't be able to handle it. Because of all the magic. We've already got magic, so we're okay, but they don't, so when it enters their immune system it sort of rejects it, like an implant I guess.[NOTE: This is probably not true, but Lucia wholeheartedly believes anything Ebony tells her.] And, anyway, can you imagine the Muggles' reaction if they knew about us? They'd burn us all at the stake. Honestly, if only they were a bit more open to the suggestion that they don't actually know everything, I bet the world would be a far better place. I guess that, if not for the immune system thing, we could just Obliviate them all a soon as they were treated, but that'd be a pain in the neck to do. Obliviation's really hard to do, apparently. People have to be specially trained to do it on daily basis. My father was an Obliviator.
I hope it does help. Isn't there a saying somewhere about something not helping until it hurts? I'm sure it will - after all, they wouldn't give it to her unless it had been tested properly, and if it's been tested properly then they know it works, or they wouldn't be giving it to her. Right? That's so cute! Don't worry. Sometimes True Love just bursts into you like a volcano or something, and you know exactly what it is and where it is and it's overwhelming. But sometimes it sort of sneaks up on you, and you don't know it's there until you just look at him one day and go, 'Oh. There it is.' It's often the second one which lasts, because the first one is all firey passion, but the second is more of a long-term type thing. Plus, in every fairytale the couple has to go through trials - to prove their love, you know? And I know you won't get literal trials in real life, but you'll still have to go through ups and downs together. And the first one is always more steeper, I guess? You go from one to the other really fast. But the second one's more smooth, because you're still learning, the whole time. I mean, look at Romeo and Juliet! They were one of the first type, and I'm not saying their story isn't beautiful, because it's incredibly beautiful and romantic, but at the same time, they did end up dead, even if it was in a romantic way. But the couples from A Midsummer Night's Dream (I can't remember thrir names) - they ended up getting married, and that's because they'd gone through so many trials together that they knew there wasn't anything else they couldn't face while they were together. I don't think there's a 'right' way to love. It's just whatever comes naturally to you, really. And I know you, Alexa. If you're going to love someone, you might do it quietly, but you'll do it wholeheartedly and whoever you love will know you're always there for them. It'll turn out alright in the end.
I'm doing pretty terribly not too bad, as are my sisters. Ebony's not doing great either but I think I'll tell you what's been happening when I see you in person, if that's okay. If you're owling any other purebloods you'll probably find out soon enough but still. It's a bit complicated.
Sending good luck to your family,
Lucia
P.S. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!
Accompanying this letter is a Howler of Lucia attempting to sing Happy Birthday, with her younger sister Willow constantly interrupting, and a small parcel containing a horse-shaped necklace.
