Letters would arrive, simple small white envelopes that were sealed with a drop of wax and a singular divot reminiscent of the side of a quill. The letters were for the Ravenclaws housed in this cabin. Identical in raw form, their names written individually on their own personal envelope.

They would be found there first thing in the morning on Aug 8, whoever had dropped them off had done so at an incredibly early hour. If one must know, it was a little after five in the morning. The letters were pushed under the front door and awaited the Ravenclaws when they rose.

For those that were aware, that had paid attention over the past year, no several. The message was obvious and clear. For those that had not paid attention, had the good fortune to avoid the drama and mayhem, were simply too new to know the terrors that awaited them in the wizarding world away from the diligent protection of their parents, they would be left with a mystery to solve in a matter of mere hours. Ravenclaws were the sort that always enjoyed a good riddle, a bit of intellectual flair to their otherwise humdrum days. The promise of a mystery, a puzzle, something to solve would be enough to draw them out.

Put an end to one more thorn.
This is a hook for Ravenclaws (if you are not named presume you got a letter as well if you are a Ravenclaw). Link

Another summer, another cabin. Percival had been to this kind of summer camp a few times already. But for a few, it would be the first time they'd experience such a pleasure. When he wondered through the front door of the cabin clad in his black sweater, some people had already made themselves at home. A few familiar faces like Illowy and Santario were among them, as well as a fellow who made chaos wherever he went.

Vlad... of course he was in this cabin. Thankfully, no one had pulled out their want and took a shot at him, else it was sure to turn into a recreation of the ball. He seemed to be talking too a new boy, someone who didn't know what his past was like. It was probably best it kept that way too. Slowly, he began to make his way towards them, his eyes noticing the librarian coming out of her room in front of him "Afternoon bookworm, I might need to have a word with you later" he said in his usual bored tone while walking past her, a small nod going to her as a way of introduction.

Turning back to his target he steps up behind him, both hands tucked into his pockets as he shoots a quick glare to the new comer "Hello there Vlad... fancy seeing you here" he said in a lack luster voice, almost as if he didn't care about the conversation at hand "I'm pleasantly surprised no one is trying to blow your head off yet, maybe they've changed their mind about you" Gray smirked before tilting his head to Isaac "And please, I hope you don't have any plans to turn into a crazed psycho and attack him too. Hell, I'd be happier if he made a few friends"

“This is only a foretaste of what is to come, and only the shadow of what is going to be.”

Sarah had to stop herself from making an unattractive snorting sound at the prospect of the other Slytherin duelling captain being so egotistical that the only solution was to bake him into pies. It was a ridiculous idea, yet she couldn’t help herself from subconsciously listing ff a number of people who she really wouldn’t mind ending up in meat pie. The rude witch who’d nearly shoved her off of the platform and onto the train tracks earlier that day being top of that list. Then again, she’d probably taste sour, so maybe not. “I’m sensing rivalry up in our duelling ranks,” Sarah said through a laugh, grinning at Santario amusedly.

She took another small bite of the pie and let out a satisfied sigh. “Well, they taste amazing. I feel like spiced lamb beats Dmitri pie any day,” She added just before a boy approached. He greeted them both, offering a name and his school – which was unsurprising given the lilt to his voice which suggested Eastern Europe. Sarah watched him with curiosity, green eyes narrowing slightly as if to get a read on him. It almost appeared like the was frowning at Aleksander, though she held little worry that he’d even notice if the way he was staring at Snatario was anything to go by. Sarah might have felt offended by the obvious disinterest in herself had she not been so amused by his apparently enamoured gaze.

Though she managed to hold in her amused giggle at his actions, she couldn’t help but smile when she realised it took San all of three sentences of her introduction to bring up duelling. “Subtle,” She whispered under her breath, unsure whater anyone heard or not. She could tell her captain was trying to gauge him, see whether he was a threat to their team. Though the Vipers were strong, they couldn’t be complacent with the new talent coming in for the summer, and Sarah realised both girls likely shared similar thoughts.

After a moment longer of letting Aleksander watch Santario, Sarah decided to introduce herself, curious to see what the boy’s reaction might be. She wondered whether he’d be irritated that she’d not left or not. “Nice to meet you, Aleksander. I’m Sarah Lightwood, also Slytherin,” She said with a smile and that same curiosity still lingering in her eyes, mixed with something almost teasing, which might be visible if someone was to look closely enough.

The cabin was filling up quickly. It seemed that the door opened and closed every few seconds to allow a new face to pass by, but Aleksandar had already found his main focus. Not much could have distracted him from the angel he was talking to and Aleksandar doubted things would be easy enough for the person he was looking for to just waltz through the door. Nonetheless, his eyes would flicker to the entrance every so often with lazy disinterest, just in case.

The girl's words were enough to capture his attention completely, a sweet sound, an accent that had him wondering. There was time to ask but now was not it. Introductions, small talk, the polite way to go about things. The angel spoke of her dislike of the sweets on the train, a sentiment Aleksandar could agree with. A lot of sugar and no nutritional value - What kind of people were content with that? The mention of a barbecue sparked his interest. So there was acceptable food provided, it had just been scheduled later than it should have been. "This should tide me over until then," he announced, an amused tinge to his voice. "I trust the barbecue will be easy to find?" A smile and the tilt of his head, his eyes would focus on the beautiful girl in front of him. "If it is not a bother, maybe you could show me the way."

Santario, an unusual name for an unusual beauty, more uncommon than her last name which was not easy to place. Irrelevant, for the moment. Aleksandar would focus on her first name, repeat it with a certain reverence, as if tasting each syllable on the tip of his tongue. Her handshake was firm, assured. Different from the sloppy, limp handshakes he was used to getting from some of his less well-mannered peers. You can tell a man by his Handshake, his father had always said, and clearly you could also tell a lady by her's. "The pleasure is all mine," he told her with a small nod, tightening his hold around her hand once before letting it go.

Quidditch and Duelling were the first thing Santario talked about, a topic of comfort maybe, certainly of interest if she chose to bring it up unprovoked. Aleksandar could only offer her a sheepish smile. "Admittedly, I am here mostly for the sake of my own curiosity." Sporting events had never quite been the focus of his attention. "Though I might follow the games if you said they will be entertaining."

His gaze shifted to the second girl then, a sweet pale doll with bright green eyes to match the vibrance of her hair. "My pleasure, Sarah," he said. With both girls opting to address him by his first name he felt comfortable to do the same. Though Miss Lightwood seemed to be seizing him up, Aleksandar would remain calm, smile never wavering from his face. "And might I say, you look vibrant." A forest spirit known to take the shape of a beautiful young woman, Sarah was a unique sight. Aleksandar may have felt captivated by her had Santario not so fully caught his attention. Even a forest spirit paled next to something so angelic.

Santario smirked at Sarah with a soft giggle. “I have to give him a hard time when I can.” Which usually meant when he was not around, considering she had a feeling he would shove his wand in her face if she ever said it to his face. “I will let my grandparents know that they are liked.” Aleksander quickly recaptured her attention, asking about the barbeque. “Sure, I’ll need to change before we go because I am not going in these.”

Sarah saw what Santario did not; she saw the way he looked at her. Most of the people who knew Santario, probably even well enough by her duelling team, knew she was oblivious to such things. San did not seem to notice casual flirting, whether directed at her or just around her. Pretty faces did not move her to stare or gawk, almost like she lived in her own little world. Instead, she hyper-focused on other things, like the quiet things people said or the comings and goings of others. The door opened to reveal the figure of a boy she had not expected. Well, boy seemed a strange phrase for him given his general size and age. Her eyes followed Vladimir, a neutral expression on her face until he was out of her available range of sight without having to move. Percival also would have been mostly ignored. She felt like the drama of the ball had only just happened yesterday, and she was not looking for more. At least not right this second.

Her eyes darted to Sarah, she had heard what was said, but it was met with a playful smirk. “Can you really blame me for trying to size up my possible competition? As one of the captains of the team, I feel like it is my duty to try and figure out who we are against. Especially after the very aggressively worded invitation.” Santario looked back over to Aleksander and smiled. “Well, now that I know you are not my competition, I guess I am allowed to like you… And yes, isn’t she? I always thought Sarah kind of looked like she belonged in a painting.” It was as close to a compliment as anyone ever got about their looks when it came from Santario. Though she had to admit that sometimes she thought Sarah looked too perfect, but not as bad as other people, like Erin. Because part-veelas look so perfect it was unsettling to her.

“Well, I think I am going to go change; even if they are not ready yet, I would not mind wandering about and grabbing some photos before things are overrun by everyone. I should only be a minute if you want to head out early with me?” She inquired to Aleksander and Sarah as she stood up and started walking towards her room. She would await their answers before entering her room and shutting the door.

She was not lying either; Santario was not one much to fuss. She kicked off her shoes and changed them for her red converse before replacing her grey t-shirt with the first thing she pulled out of her trunk, a red and grey plaid lace-up asymmetrical tank top. A quick brush through her hair and the grabbing of her camera bag, and she was ready to go. Re-opening her bedroom door, she would remerge.

If no one wanted to go with her early, Santario would leave the cabin by herself; if others came, she would wait until they were ready.

Sarah rolled her eyes at the mention of the invitation. “Very aggressive,” She agreed, though aggressive almost sounded like an understatement in her opinion. She was already secretly nervous about being an official Viper in her next year, something she was very keen on keeping hidden from any of her teammates and especially those on the other house teams. But aggressive letters were enough to even make her mask slip on occasion. She put it to the back of her mind for now, there were other things to be focussing on. Like seeing where whatever this thing was going between San and Aleksander. As of yet, Santario seemed unaware of the flirting which seemed so obvious to Sarah.

The Slytherin had been complimented on her appearance before, though she took very little from such compliments. If one was to compliment her brain or magical ability, however. Even so, unexpected compliments were still enough to cause a smattering of pink to flush across her usually pale cheeks. “Flattery will get you everywhere,” she said with a sly grin which she hoped drew away from her blush. “If I ever do end up in a painting, please make sure I’m not stuck by the boys’ lavatories like the poor sods on the castle fourth floor. Maybe near the kitchen would be nicer,” She mused, not really expecting anything in return for her fantastical nonsense.

When San stood to leave, Sarah almost moved to walk away with her. She’d dressed for summer, and as warm as it had been earlier, she thought perhaps grabbing a jacket might be sensible. She had no idea how long they’d all stay out tonight anyway. But she stopped herself from standing and instead gave Santario a noncommittal nod.

“I can go and find someone else to attend the barbecue with if you’d like?” Sarah said when Santario was out of earshot, a teasing edge to her voice as she looked across at Aleksander. Her fellow snake hadn’t picked up on the flirting, but as her lips curled into an amused yet friendly smile, she let him know that she had. She hadn’t planned to meet with anyone that evening though she’d probably find someone if she needed to. But if she didn’t go with the pair, she’d make sure to catch up with the other Slytherin later to not-so-subtly ask how her evening had been. Perhaps she should change rooms and ask to bunk with her so they could gossip all night, she mused. “Oh, and a piece of advice, ask about her camera, or photography, or anything else related to it,” Sarah said, her eyes knowing. She was torn between wanting to leave the pair be and wanting to tag along, if only to watch more unnoticed flirting. She hoped Santario would feel flattered when, or if, she finally noticed.

“Hi”

A small voice proclaimed a simple, quiet greeting. He almost missed the words, often not intended for him, over the din of chatter in the rooms adjacent.

"Salutations and salamanders," he replied. He did not look in the direction of the soon to be first year but smiled slightly as he withdrew his belongings.

“I’m Isaac.”

"Vladimir Athanatos, House Ravenclaw," he replied with an old sense of formality. He was imposing but more in his expression, one of stern seriousness. For those that had older siblings in the school or were themselves a student, he was known often by reputation -- suspicious, potentially dangerous. Disaster seemed to follow the teen wherever he went yet the stuffy, tall youth who stood at approximately six feet with broad shoulders and large hands did not seem dressed for the occasion in comparison to his impeccably dressed peers. Dress to impress many would say but one would think at the very least dress to blend in. Not to say he was not smartly dressed, cleanly attired or that his garments were in a state of disrepair. No, he simply wore simple clothes. A pair of pleated dresspants with a belt that cinched his surprisingly narrow waist. A pair of polished dress shoes, laced that gave a false impression of additional height, a ruler would measure him at 6 foot 1 rather than 6 foot even. Despite the heat he wore a long sleeved shirt, the fabric was of course thin and a dark charcoal color but well fitted. A small silver chain extended from his right pocket, clasped to his belt loop. A silver necklace dipped into his shirt, hiding a pendant likely. On his hand, a single ring with a dark blue stone.

The stare from the curious underclassman was not lost to the Ravenclaw. It was hardly a secret at this point. "Medicine," he said simply. "But it is not contagious," he lied.

He let out a sigh as he glanced towards the door. "Actually," he changed direction and handed the boy a small collection of syringes. "I have been plagued by curious peers, it would be a great service to me if you left these among your things," he offered about seven glass syringes with long, thick capped needles. They looked a bit wider than the ones someone might see if they went to the doctor's office for a vaccine. (18G for those that want a number.) "I use these for my nightly treatments," he continued. "If you see anything filled with a dark fluid, just leave it alone -- it is dirty. Just tell me which one you found." He did not expect much from the kid, he had every intention of keeping the soon to be first year out of the messes he intended to make. "If you can't wake me up, just find Nurse Kelsey Brumby. Don't try to help me, keep all the lights on and shut... no, lock the door."

“Are you excited for Summer Camp?”

A potentially welcome change of topic. "No, not really," he admitted. "I hope you have a decent one however. My first year in Hogwarts was bloody hellish."

Speaking of. He felt someone enter the room, the buzz of their presence. Familiar, terse, tense, Percival Grey. He quickly slid the bottles and needles under his pillow less perhaps whatever was donated to the first year.

"Hello there Vlad... fancy seeing you here"

"Grey," he replied stiffly.

"I'm pleasantly surprised no one is trying to blow your head off yet, maybe they've changed their mind about you"

"Summer is young, give them a day," he replied. "Unless you are looking for the first shot," an attempt to echo the indifferent tone and unnerve the freshly badged Prefect.

"And please, I hope you don't have any plans to turn into a crazed psycho and attack him too. Hell, I'd be happier if he made a few friends"

"Shu-Hui will be under my care this summer," he claimed. Friend might be a bit too ambitious. And there he was, being creepy already knowing what she should not.

Salamanders.

He couldn't help but smile at that. Above all, it was heartening to be acknowledged by the older student. Vladimir had to be at least two or three years older based on his looks and height alone, and being so, he had no obligation to fraternize with a kid. It lifted his spirits further when the stocky, unfriendly Ravenclaw showed the slightest hints of a grin.

Medicine. For a disease that is not contagious.

It was the most exquisite medicine he had ever seen. Its lush, golden texture could've served ornament to many aesthetic designs, for tables, shelves, art pieces... Hmm? His wandering gaze returned to Vladimir as he began to speak again. His request was simple, his reasoning political.

"Yeah, sure!" he exclaimed hastily, afraid to lose or waste away this moment of amiability he had found in his roommate. His large hands easily took hold of the syringes, and he tucked them away in a corner of his bag, cushioned by some towels he had brought for swimming. Plagued by curious peers?

And lock the door. He nodded and stood, crossing the room to the closed door. Overzealous interpretation led him to mistake the guidance as an immediate instruction, and his index finger already moved towards the small metal button that would seal them from outsiders, all as he listened to Vladimir's safety briefing, followed by the concerning admission that his first year at Hogwarts had been less than pleasant. Even his choice of wording, wishing him a decent one rather than a good one spoke volumes of his experience at this school. Isaac might've asked him then to elaborate, out of concern for his eventual upperclassman and roommate for a month, when the closed door beside him was purposefully opened from the outside, causing him to stumble out of the way almost comically.

Was it a Professor, come to forbid them from seeking privacy before lights out? No, it was a student, one who didn't respect the symbolism of closed doors. Almost like a wall of thin air, Isaac remained present but unnoticed amid their passive aggressive exchange. Though his posture was placating, like a civilian caught in the middle of a crossfire, he learned the other boy’s name, Gray. He also learned that his roommate was someone who was not well-liked, to a far greater extent than what he initially assumed. But children are cruel and prone to swift judgement. Isaac had been judged before by many, not to say that he wasn’t prone to judgement himself, simply that he didn’t judge immediately off of rumour and hearsay. His soft, girlish voice appealed to the intruder.

Dude, you should knock first,” he said quietly to Gray, who hadn’t spoken a word to him ever since bursting into his room seconds ago, whose affections belonged entirely to Vladimir Athanatos. The use of his Chinese name from the latter went over his head. He simply assumed that the older boy had referred to a name list beforehand or something, a wise step of preparation for someone who wasn’t popular among the students.

A captain.

The angel was not only beautiful, she also showed leadership skill. A winner, judging by the fact that her team - whether it was Quidditch or Duelling - was playing against the guest schools. Ambition was a well known trait of those who inhabited House Slytherin, Aleksandar had read enough about Hogwarts to be aware of that. Clever, cunning. None of the books had mentioned stunning. He found himself drawn in like metal to a magnet, powerless to resist that kind of force. Her words made him smile, bearing pearly white teeth. "If you are playing to lead your team to victory," he said with a small nod. "I will definitely be following the games. You will just need to point me in the right direction." He would make sure to show his support in some way. Betrayal to his own school? He had no ties to either of their sports teams, so he also had no loyalties to them.

His focus was shifted to Sarah then, the beautiful forest spirit in vibrant greens, the girl who indeed belonged in a painting, hung in a gallery. Natural beauty was seldom found and while Aleksandar did not consider it the most important thing in a person, he certainly appreciated its aesthetic. Her words did not make much sense to him - He did not know enough about Hogwarts to be aware of specific locations, but the interaction seemed to be mostly between the two girls, so Aleksandar leaned back to simply observe. Things did not always have to be about him.

It only took a moment then, for Santario to take the initiative and proclaim her intentions of visiting the Barbecue early. It made Aleksandar smile, a small tilt of his head showing his acknowledgment. There was a strength to her that could only reside within an ethereal creature. "I should do the same," he decided. A glance down his own body showed distaste for his current attire. Too casual for a Welcome Barbecue, he assumed, with the scent of old train compartments and pastries clinging to every fibre. "I'd be honoured to join you then." He watched as she made her way to her room, turned to retreat to his own just as Sarah's voice held him back with a surprising offer.

"Please do not change your plans on my account," he told her with a smile, one hand pressed against his chest. He appreciated the thought, was aware that his advances may have been more obvious than he would have liked for them to be, though he had no intention of pushing anybody away. The advice that followed Sarah's offer was met with a grateful nod. Santario had spoken of taking pictures if the barbecue was not read yet, though Sarah's words revealed it to be a passion more so than just a casual hobby. "You are kind, Sarah," he told the forest spirit warmly. "Your advice is much appreciated." With a nod and a shallow bow he excused himself to his room.

The letter he had been looking at was still on his bed, so he made quick work of sliding it into his bag before changing into something he thought more suitable. Black and red in colour, he looked more formal in his new attire without fearing to be overdressed. After all, this was a Summer Camp, not a Ball.

Aleksandar would rejoin the living quarters not long after Santario, a pleased expression crossing his features as he considered her new clothes. Casual, yet intriguing, flecks of colour in a sea of greys. She looked stunning, though she already had in the clothes she had worn before so it hardly required a comment on the obvious. If Sarah was joining them for the Barbecue, Aleksandar would make sure she was ready as well before reaching out and respectfully hovering his hand inches from Santario's arm to beckon her along. "Shall we?" he said, either directed to the angel, or Sarah as well if she was accompanying them.

Either way he would hold the door open and leave the cabin last with a smile on his face.

As Santario emerged from the room, smoothing the front of her shirt, she noticed Aleksander was not there, so she assumed that he went to change as well, given that he had been keen to go just beforehand. “Did you want to come with us, Sarah? Oh, and if we don’t have enough girls in here, you can feel free to switch to my room.” She offered for her to join them one more time, not having gotten a clear answer from her before and adding an invitation to her bunk. She was trying, and that was what counted. She vowed after last January that she would try to not be so closed off all the time. So a room invite surely must have shown that. She was not looking to make any new best friends, but in the least friendly acquaintances were better than nothing.

As Aleksander reappeared, Santario looked up, offering him a small smile as she readjusted the strap on her camera bag; it had been hanging slightly lopsided, which was just annoying. “I like your shirt.” His eyes lingered, and she just assumed he was waiting on her. Santario moved past the seating area to join Aleksander’s side. “Oh, I can show you where we will be having the duelling competition now as well. The quidditch pitch is harder to miss.” Considering the quidditch pitch was always outside, and the duelling area was not.

She would mostly follow Aleksander’s lead for leaving the cabin, and when Sarah either decided to come or did not, Santario would walk through the door that was held open.
