In general the people you meet your first weeks tend to be long-term friends ion the community so reach out over a few mediums as you start out. I strongly recommend Discord for interfacing with other users, getting your questions answered and finding roleplay friends as well.

It's funny cause I actually have a lot of friends on the Discord server I just never reach out to start threads so I'm like awh we are really great friends and then Annie doesn't know their character.

Ahahaha that happens to me all the time. I’ll see a character and want to say hi before I realize Callista doesn’t actually know who they are. I usually just mention something like “they look familiar” as a way of saying “hi, do you remember me :>”
