A familiar smile took ahold of Sylvain's face as Maria agreed to go with him. "I know, it's cold, but I can't help the feeling that some fresh air would help." Her enthusiasm was certainly helping him already. Pulling his toboggin, scarf and winter cloak off of the seat he had set them in, Sylvain began assembling his outdoor adventuring gear into its intended ensemble. Geared up and ready to go, he turned to Maria to see if she was prepared. "You ready?" If she said no, he would stay until she was. If so, then he would make for the courtyard.

His mind still fogged by the overwhelming amount of work in his pack, Sylvain shook his head as he walked to loosen the screws a bit. Changing the hangout from homework to a walk in the winter cold had been a rapid change of pace, so now it was difficult to think of what to talk about. Eventually, after a few moments of comfortable silence, he decided on snowmen. "Did you see all the snow..." he would pause, searching for the right word. "Creatures? The ones everyone made with me last month?"

It had been an attempt to lighten spirits. The errand had been orchestrated with the hopes of uplifting others and keeping the season spirits high, and there were several students who put together more than marvelous sculptures. There were even a few who had participated from their dorms. Of course, all of their hard work had disappeared by now. It had either been dismantled by the Castle's staff, or melted by a warm couple of days. Regardless, there would've been at least a day or two that the courtyard had been filled with golems of all shapes and sizes.

"Did you like any of them?" Secretly, he hoped she had liked his.

Maria couldn’t help but smile back when she saw Syl suit up for the snow. The Hufflepuff donned her own gear: a warm pair of earmuffs, a button-up coat with a fluffy high collar, and gloves. She had to admit that perhaps she was not entirely built for the snow as she much preferred the warm spring breezes, but she was going to enjoy time with her friend. “Ready!” She exclaimed with her arms out, as if presenting herself when he asked if she was.

When they arrived at the courtyard, her eyes couldn’t help but look at the courtyard, now covered in sheets of ice and snow. It seemed like a stark difference from its usual picture, full of life and full of students. The lack of life almost seemed morbid, but as the seasons change, and fall transitions to the harsh winter, spring also comes bringing new life with it.

As she pondered, she nearly missed hearing Syl’s question.

“Hmm? Oh, I don’t think I did.” She said, snapping back into reality. “This time last year was kind of busy for me.” She was indeed busy trying to keep up with everything and not be so sad. But she would not tell him that last part. She wanted to lighten the mood and make him feel better. “Did you make anything good?” She asked, continuing to survey the area.

Tryna solve a problem like Maria.

Sylvain shrugged in response to Maria's question before a joke popped into his head. "I made a snowman. They're pretty cool if you think about them being made out of snow and stuff." He'd shoot her a deadpan look as though he got her good, but it was a pretty nerdy joke all things considered. Maybe it would go right over her head.

The walk down the steps was not as crowded as it was normally. It was an interesting change of pace. "Asides from the snowmen, I got to help a bunch of others put together their own creations." His eyes would sparkle as he spoke of inspiring others. He thought of it as a reward of its own. "Far more fun that way. At least I think so."

Still, the issue he'd been having with charms lingered. As much as small talk was distracting, nothing really ate at him like being unable to do the things he'd been practicing at. It was almost as if a madness overtook him when he lingered on the topic of being incapable of magic. Frowning, he turned to Maria to ask her perspective. "Ollivander said that the wand chooses the wizard," he held his aloft in front of them both. "But I for the life of me can't figure out why mine chose me."

It was a stubborn bit of wood, but admittedly it had flair when they worked together. "Does your wand ever..." He would struggle to find the right words. "Does it ever just not listen to you?" It was fickle to say the least. Sometimes it helped, others times it hurt. Talk about mixed signals.
