Madeleine Nakamura was home for the summer, spending time in her beloved hometown of Colmar, France. The bright houses, the flowers, the atmosphere - it was all such a comfort to the twelve-year-old girl. She got to catch up with her childhood friends - girls in the neighborhood that had gone to the same dance studio as her - and spend her days running around the town with them. And the best part of it all was being able to cuddle with her giant of a dog every night. Her labradoodle Louie missed her just as much as she missed him.Late July 2021

Of course, seeing her mother was also a highlight, but Melanie Nakamura was quite busy during the summer holidays. As a wandmaker, this is when she would get the most requests or visitors to her studio, creating wands for children about to enter their first year at Beauxbatons. Thus, Maddie spent most of her free time out of the house and hanging out with her friends or writing owls to Cassanora.
When she woke up on this particular morning, though, she smelled food cooking. Not normal food either - it smelled like pancakes! Her mother usually made savory foods for breakfast, not sweets. Sweets were reserved for snacktimes or dessert. Maddie also thought she heard - singing? With a sudden realization striking her, a wide grin spread across her face and she launched out of bed. She and Louie bounded down the stairs of the cottage and came face-to-face with a woman who was not normally seen in this house.
"Auntie Hanna!" Madeleine immediately wrapped her arms around her aunt, squeezing tightly. She had not seen her aunt in well over a year, and this was a great surprise!
"It's lovely to see you, too, Maddie," Hanna replied with a laugh, returning the hug with equal gusto. "You've grown so much!" she commented when they pulled apart. Maddie agreed with her aunt's assessment. She had grown quite a bit since they'd last seen each other.
"Where's Mom?" Maddie asked, her eyes casting about the room but unable to find her mother. "I mean, where's mom?" the young French girl made the correction to speaking in Japanese as she turned back to her aunt, since the woman was nowhere close to fluent in French. They could both speak in English, but Maddie knew this was a good opportunity to practice the language she used the least.
"She had to go to the studio for an early appointment. I've made breakfast, though!"
Over the pancake-laden breakfast, Madeleine regaled her aunt with stories of her second year at Beauxbatons and her visits to Hogwarts. She spoke highly of her best friend Cassanora. She elaborated on her dance lessons and her growing skills with her wand. She spoke of how beautiful the French castle was and its gardens. Hanna was an amazing audience, asking all the right questions and laughing when Maddie expected it. It was nice to be able to sit with her and just talk.
"So how come you're here?" Maddie asked an hour later, when both were full and had transitioned to the living room. The young girl knew there must be a reason her aunt was there - not just to provide breakfast today. She was patting Louie's head when she asked the question, but when she didn't receive an immediate response she looked up at her aunt and caught a glimpse of something. Nerves? Was that a nervous look? It was gone from Hanna's face before Maddie could make a proper deduction.
"Well, I wanted to show you something," Hanna said, a small smile gracing her lips. Maddie still thought she saw nerves and was becoming apprehensive herself, but the idea of seeing something cool was making her more excited than anything else. "Think of it as a birthday present." This statement only made Maddie more excited. She was turning thirteen in a couple weeks, which was a big deal. This must be a really good present!
She watched as her aunt reached into her purse and pulled out what looked like a picture. Maddie felt slight disappointment. Was that all? A picture? She could only see the back of it at the moment, which was devoid of any detail, and she tried to wait patiently as her aunt turned to her. Maddie met Hanna's eyes and this time definitely read the uncertainty in her look. Why did she look like she was-
"I found a picture of your father," she said.
Maddie's eyes widened at the words that came from her aunt. Her father? But- Mom had said that all of his pictures had been destroyed when he died. "How did you get it?" Maddie asked, her voice sounding foreign to her own ears. Her eyes fell to the picture in her aunt's hand, and she reached for it. Hanna jerked her hand back, holding it out of reach and prompting Maddie to focus her eyes back on her aunt.
"You can't tell your mom that I'm showing you this," Hanna said, her voice carrying a tone that Maddie had not heard before. "I found it in our childhood home, in your mother's old things," she answered, her gaze softening while looking at the young girl. "Maybe she forgot it was there, but- I don't think she'd be pleased to know that I'm showing you. I can't answer beyond that, but... I think you deserve to know what he looked like."
Madeleine's heart was pounding as her aunt spoke, barely registering the content of her words. This was probably the most she'd heard about her father in years - since she learned to stop asking. Mom said her father had worked for the government, and when he died, they had erased all trace of his existence. It was for their safety, her mother always said.
But now - now Maddie would finally get to see what he had looked like, beyond her mother's descriptions.
"I won't tell her," Maddie agreed, not truly understanding why they couldn't tell her, but also not caring. She wanted the picture. And at last, Hanna offered it to her. She took it without a word and studied the man in it.
The young girl didn't know what she'd been expecting, but her slender fingers traced the outline of his face. He was so young in this picture. Was this before he had even started his job with the government? She knew so little of her father, and she had learned not to ask questions. Her mother didn't like to speak about him much, but sometimes on a holiday or special occasion, Melanie had told Madeleine a story or two about him. Seeing his face... well, it was stirring feelings. She was suddenly intensely sad. But also- confused...
"I'm here!" Maddie jumped when she heard her mother's voice at the front door. Louie rushed off to greet the woman as Hanna snatched the photo from Maddie and stuffed it back in her purse. "Just for a few moments, but I'm here!" It seemed Melanie had returned from her wand studio to check in on them.
"Not a word, remember?" Hanna said, her dark eyes catching Maddie's. The young girl nodded, confusion still running rampant through her. Her mother entered the room, and Maddie tried to act normally. She hugged her mother, but left the conversation to the two adults. It felt like forever that her mother stayed, making conversation and apologizing for not being able to spend more time. It was only fifteen minutes that she stayed, but the whole time Maddie could hardly contain herself.
Finally, her mother had to return back to work, and Aunt Hanna walked her to the door. Maddie stayed in the living room and dug through her aunt's purse, taking out the picture.
Her heart rate increased when she saw it again. Her confusion from earlier multiplied. Her father was dead... But if that was the case... why did it feel like she had seen this man before? Why did he seem so... familiar?

Aunt Hanna stayed for a couple days before heading back home. Surprisingly, it wasn't hard for Maddie to continue as normal, because she really missed her aunt and treasured the time she and her mom were together. It was on her last day that Maddie felt it - the need to keep the photo. So she did exactly that - just before Hanna left France, Maddie snuck the photograph out of her aunt's purse and held onto it. Hanna didn't notice - or if she did, she didn't say anything before she left the house and was off back to Australia.Later July 2021
The next day - without the beautiful chaos of her aunt, and her mother returning to her wand workshop - Maddie was finally left alone with her thoughts. And the photo. She kept looking at it throughout the day, trying to figure out why it was such a familiar visage, but she got no closer to figuring it out. And her paranoia was growing.
For many of her childhood years, she hadn't even known she had grandparents on her mom's side. She had never properly had a conversation with her mom about it either - what was she supposed to say? Why did you never tell me about your parents? All that she'd been told was that she'd never had an opportunity to meet them before a couple years ago, and she had accepted that. Any of the politics behind it was lost in her childhood mind. But she'd also held a buried resentment towards her mom for keeping her from that side of the family for a while. And now, that buried resentment was starting to surface as she wondered if something else was being kept from her.
This photograph of the father she had never seen before was stirring a lot of feelings. Sadness, confusion, longing. Feelings she'd never felt so intensely before when thinking of the man that had died before she was born. Having never met him or even seen him before - and with very limited stories from her mother - she'd never felt like she was missing out on much. And now - just having an image to put to the idea of a father was shaking her to her core.
Madeleine sat down in her backyard with Louie on 31st July, the day before she was meant to go to the Hogwarts summer camp with her schoolmates. She had in her lap a clipboard and a parchment, on which she would write a letter.
The letter is written in French
This part of the letter was true-ish. She did miss her mom and her mom missed her, but that absolutely wasn't the reason Maddie was staying behind. She and her mom had grown used to the limited time they had together, and being such independent beings, they had adjusted well enough to Maddie being away for most of every year. In more truth, though, Maddie was feeling suspicious of her mother. Her mom hadn't really done anything special during this summer break so far, but Maddie's mind was running wild ever since her aunt showed her that photo. The paranoia was only growing, and by staying for the rest of the summer, Maddie thought maybe she could find something out that would put her mind at ease.Cass (@Hugh Lowe),
Sorry to be so last minute, but I've decided not to go to the Hogwarts summer camp after all. I want to spend a bit more time at home with Mom before spending the year at school. I think she has been missing me more than she lets on, and I kinda miss her too, so another month will be nice to have with her.
Maddie signed the letter with her usual grand signature, adding hearts and x's and o's. She was sad that she wouldn't be seeing Cassanora for another month, but they could still send owls. It was hard not to just pour her heart out to her best friend and write about all the things she was feeling, but she wanted to try to process it on her own. She was probably imagining the fact that the photo looked so familiar, but she couldn't leave home without trying to find out more. And tell Angél (@Santario Martin) that I'm sorry I won't be there. I know we're the ones who convinced her to go to camp in first place. Make sure to at least keep her away from any crazy boys - oh, and that cousin of hers. She's the worst.
I hope you have fun at camp, and tell your dad hi from me!
Stay safe around all those crazy Hogwarts students!![]()

I'll see you at Beauxbatons! Make sure to write me about everything that's happening at camp!
xoxo
Maddie
The almost-thirteen-year-old girl rolled up the parchment and decided to head towards her mother's wandshop, where there would be an owl that she could send the letter with.

August 2021
The first week of August, Madeleine put herself to work. When her mother was at her wand studio, Maddie would scour the house like she never had before. She was looking for any information at all on her father. She had always known his name had been Mako, though she did not know his last name. Safety reasons, her mother had always said. The more she searched and thought about it, the more skeptical she was becoming of her mother. But her search wasn't turning up anything. She even went into her mother's room and searched areas like under the bed and in her closet. Rien. Nothing.
The brunette did this for days, unwilling to believe that her mother truly had no more information around the house about her father. The absence of him in photos and spirit was something she had been used to all her life, but now she was putting it all under a microscope. Everytime she looked at the photo, there was a gut feeling that he looked familiar for a reason! But why? Mads even went to her mother's wand studio one day under the guise of lunch, and spent some time searching when her mother attended to customers. Still absolutely nothing.
Then came the news of the bombing. Maddie and Cassanora (@Hugh Lowe) were writing each other regularly, so of course she heard about the bombing in Hogsmeade. Although she did not know anyone in Koldovstoretz, that night Maddie broke down in tears in her mother's arms and felt an overwhelming sense of guilt. For some strange reason, she was sad that she had not been there at camp. She knew in her head that she couldn't have helped and that being there would have been scary, but at least she could have been there with Cass. And the fact that all those kids had died with no warning whatsoever? It was just so so tragic and she couldn't help tearing up every time she thought about it. How lives were just snuffed out in a blink of the eye. For the young girl who had not experienced a close death in her life yet (sans the father she never knew), she was unequipped for how oddly intense the sadness was.
That night Melanie comforted her to no end, and Maddie soon felt her guilt shifting towards her caring mother. Why was she doubting the woman who was here comforting her while she cried over something that didn't even impact her? The woman who had raised her all these years? Who was always so supportive of her dreams? This grief seemed to shift her outlook on her mother back to where it had been. The idea that her mother was being anything but honest about her father and his death and why she couldn't have details - it was preposterous. Of course it was all true. Why had seeing a picture of him made her so doubtful? It was just an image. One she would treasure in secret, but not criticize her mother for keeping from her.
And so Maddie became less invested in finding some crazy conspiracy theory about her father. The more she looked at the photo, the less she felt that he looked familiar for the reasons she originally thought. The familiarity was in the warm color of his skin and the point of his chin. He was familiar because Maddie herself had similar features and saw them all the time in the mirror. That explained it as long as she ignored her gut feeling that said otherwise.
A week later came August 18th - Madeleine's thirteenth birthday party. She had a party like she normally did, inviting her friends in the neighborhood. It was a fun time, but Maddie found herself wishing she could celebrate with Cass and Angél. She was longing to go back to Beauxbatons, where she and Cass could exchange gifts and celebrate each other's birthdays properly. And she no longer wanted to be at home, where all she did was ponder the stories she'd been told of her father. She tried to distract herself by leaving the house often - taking Louie on walks, playing with her friends, going to the dance studio. But her thoughts kept drifting back to that familiar face...
Finally, her last week of August arrived and she couldn't contain her excitement about going back to school. She and her mother's relationship felt normal again, and she was a bit sad to be leaving her, but not for long. Melanie always encouraged her independence and cheered on her goals. They would write like they normally did, but Maddie's schedule would soon be filled again with classes and dance and friends and learning.
As she packed up the last of her uniforms and her scrunchies, she took the photo of her father in her hands. She would take it with her to school, but she wasn't ready to share it yet with Cass. Soon for sure, but for now, she would keep this photo to herself. The new teenager couldn't explain why she felt that way, but for just for a little bit longer, she wanted to feel like she had this secret connection to him.
Madeleine tucked the photo preciously into her trunk, then headed downstairs where her mom was waiting to take her to school.
