Thestral Welcome to the Thestral Cabin Closed

Evening, 1st of August
Following the long train journey, students finally arrived at Hogwarts. They were escorted directly to the Campgrounds and registered again. It was, at this stage that they were given the rules for the month. These were pretty obvious but they were stated again by Professor Jensen, simply because she did not trust students to listen. She also wanted to be sure that the visiting students had no excuse of being 'unaware' of the rules. Where necessary, the accompanying adults from each of the schools would repeat the rules in their school's language for people who didn't have English as their first language.

Camp rules were very simple. Obey the curfew, follow usual school rules, don't wander off into the forest, don't be a giant jerk - you know, all of the usual things. Failure to comply would result in a detention, or worse, banned from attending future camps.

Eight log cabins provided lodging for campers, each one with a beast-bearing flag for which they were named. Three were the Avian cabins: Augurey, Occamy, and Phoenix. Across from these were the three Equine cabins: Thestral, Kelpie, and Unicorn. At either end were two cabins intended for adults only but for this year's festivities repurposed for student use: the Hippogriff and Dragon cabins. Those creatures occupying the enchanted flags mutely flexed in a constant show of "friendly" competition: beating wings, clacking beaks, stamping hooves, and soundlessly tossing their heads.

Every structure appeared deceptively humble in size on the outside, while the interiors were enlarged by extension charms, making them wide beyond means and quite comfortable. These were fully furnished with curtained bunks, personal chests, dressers, wood-burning stoves, and plush floor rugs. The layouts were strikingly similar to the dorm rooms back at the castle. Rather than having House themes, however, they featured nuances of the beast on their flag.

During registration, they also all received their cabin allocations. Students were then escorted to the cabins by an adult and given some time to put their bags down, secure themselves a bed and settle into the accommodation that they would be staying at for the month. The official feast was being set up and would start in about an hour. After which, they could attend the first campfire of the month if they wish to. Of course, they could just return to the cabins whenever they wanted to rest.

The group of students that arrived here would be the members of the Thestral Cabin.

Thestral

An eerie sort of cabin, the truth be said. Like the ephemeral nature of death, this cabin is also quite... odd. Visible to those assigned to it, students would be seen walking towards an open space and then they would simply... disappear. When students unassigned walk close to the cabin, they can see the humble features of the dwelling quite plainly. Slats of wood laced together neatly, dark and tired, but solid and firm. The door imposing, the image of a thestral embossed on the frame. Inside, the cabin was brighter than one would expect. Not a space full of dread, but rather a space reflective of misunderstanding. [Image Link]. Comfortable with adequate seating, the actual cabin is uniquely quiet, as in the students within cannot hear anything going on outside and those on the outside cannot hear what transpires within. This being a source of a great many rumours. Those who try to peer inside the cabin uninvited would see through the panes simply a dark, empty space. A field of ash and death, one needs to belong to the thestral cabin to understand its strange mysteries.

An outsider can be temporarily offered admittance, much like a vampire entering an abode. Just that time, just that day. Once they cross the threshold to the outside, they wont be able to enter inside. If their invitation is revoked, they would feel themselves pulled away, out the front door and expelled. At least that is the rumor, nobody ever gets past the front door. A professor is often sitting in that common area and often revokes the invitation as soon as a student utters one. The sleeping quarters are simple and clean. Canopied bunk beds, the lowest very close to the floor which some might find unusual and the second a short climb. [Image Link]

So.. cabins this year? Wasn't it tents last year. And students got to choose who they were with. Now it was all randomly generated. Gross, new people and making friends. The 5th year Durmstrang boy had a small frown on his face. Ah well, the summer would still be fun and eventful and he could reunite with other people he already knew. This was just the people he was rooming with for the summer. Although he probably should try to make friends.. We'll see about that.. most of them are probably Hogwarts students who know each other and will flock together like birds. He bit the inside of his cheek at the thought.

Milosh saw the cabin shimmer as if it just.. appeared and entered the cabin he was assigned to without a second thought. The boy had dropped his luggage in doorway, of course not right in front of it as that would be rude and he'd cause a traffic jam of people tripping over it. It seemed he was early, which wasn't such a bad thing. More time to look around and choose preferred spots for sleeping and what not. Secretly he was happy he didn't have to spend all summer at home but he was also worried about his mother being alone in the house with his dad among other things. He shook his head to rid the thoughts, his blonde curls bobbing around. The boy stuck his hands in his black slacks pockets, and his blue-pinned striped shirt was slightly un-buttoned since he didn't have to be formal at Hogwarts. The sunglasses hung from his collar since there was no point at wearing them indoors. Milo took off his shoes and climbed one of the ladders to a canopy-type bed set up.

He stretched and let out a small yawn, folding his hands behind his head as he gazed around the cabin. It was fairly bright but not overly so which was nice. Sure he was a gremlin when it came to dark places so this would make him open up more. And it was quiet, or at least for now. Soon his gaze turned to the top of the cabin, staring at the grooves and lines in the wood, getting lost in his thoughts, a small content look rest on his lips, his brows slightly furrowed and eyes narrowed as he zoned out, waiting for some of his cabinmates to arrive. Hopefully they didn't take long. Yes he wasn't good at socialization nor did he plan on be-friending anyone but you never know. Plus it was either that or boredom.

There was something magical about the Slytherin Head of House. She had white hair that was perfectly blended with her skin. Intimidation was all she heard when she explained the rules of being in Summer Camp. Perhaps this time, it would be more relaxed in terms of unexpected events with how strict they were being.

Bloom was informed that she was in the Thestral Cabin. Interesting enough it was a creature that Bloom was unable to see. In a way it was a blessing to not be able to see Thestrals as it related to death. She could not even imagine the baggage it came with.

Lugging her belongings, she went towards the area where her cabin should be. There were the Unicorns but where was hers? Bloom walked closer to the Unicorn cabin when all of a sudden the Thestral cabin which was nearby appeared out of nowhere. She looked around, wondering if anyone else had it appear for them so randomly like that. But those who were going to the Unicorn Cabin didn't even glance over to her cabin.

For a second, Bloom placed the bags on the ground. She repositioned her hands on her luggage and lifted carefully, now walking towards the Thestral Cabin.

Opening the door, she looked around with a smile on her face. It was odd, but beautiful. She loved the way it was inviting to the eye. For an animal that was so dark, the inside was bright and warm. Walking in further, she dropped her belongings on the nearest couch.

On the table was a piece of paper and it looked like an attendance list. Bloom took a look at it and tried to find names that were familiar to her. There were a few, but no one that she was ever close with. She guessed that she would have to make the best of it and make new friends.

Bloom grabbed her luggage once more and went to venture around the rooms. They were largely spaced and most were bunk beds. She peeked into one of the rooms and saw that she wasn't alone. Bloom had never met them before. Since meeting two acquaintances on the train ride back home, she had found her outgoing self. Bloom fixed her hair and walked up to the boy who looked to be around her age.

"Hi, um... I'm Bloom," she said, giving the gave the boy a small smile. Bloom went towards the nearest bed and sat down, resting her luggage nearby on the floor. "The weirdest thing happened. This cabin didn't even exist until I came closer to it. Did the same happen to you?" she asked, wondering if it was just a magical extension to the name of the cabin.

August 1st, 2021

Welp, here she was again. Hogwarts.
Mel remembered it from her time here back in May, for the Blossom Ball. Though she was still prickly about having to come to this ridiculous summer camp in the first place -"This'll be a good life experience that you will be grateful to have had later on," her mother had said when she signed her daughter up against her will- Mel had to admit that the place was gorgeous. The surrounding hills were green and lush now that most of the snow had melted, and the mountains beyond them, a dusty purple. The sky was a brilliant blue like no other. The trees rustled in the slight breeze, lending movement to the landscape. Despite her efforts, Mel was glad to be back.

When she arrived at her cabin, Mel glanced at the list of residents, looking for familiar names. Perhaps her friends Rhea or Calypso from Gryffindor. A few of the names she recognized, but she didn't really know the people they belonged to.
Taking time to look around the cabin now, she noticed there was something quite odd about the space. It was unnaturally quiet. An almost-but-not-quite eerie vibe had settled over the room, though it wasn't uninviting. Mel didn't mind the strangeness. It was clean, and the understated neutral-tone design was quite pleasant to look at. Floaty curtains flanked the beds, which looked comfortable. She quickly claimed a top bunk, plunking her trunk down on the quilt and thanking her lucky stars that she hadn't been assigned that Unicorn cabin she'd walked past. Not that Mel had anything against bright colors -she didn't- but the girl imagined it would be a bit hard to sleep or concentrate on anything with that rainbow abomination screaming at you from every surface.

It was only then that Mel noticed the other two campers who had arrived before her. A Durmstrang boy lounging in one of the top bunks, and a Hogwarts Fifth Year trying to start up a conversation with him. She supposed she should make an attempt at friendliness, as these were the people she'd spend a month of the summer with.
Mel grabbed her sweatshirt -it was much colder in Scotland than it had been in the States- climbed down from her bunk, and walked over to her cabinmates. The Hogwartsian, Bloom, was saying something about their cabin playing optic illusions on her. Now that she mentioned it, Mel remembered the cabin appearing almost phantomlike in front of her as she had approached it.

"Hey. Um, sorry to barge in on your conversation like this. I'm Mel. From Ilvermorny. You're right, this cabin is seriously weird. But you know, I kind of like it. It's mysterious. Almost like we're living inside of an adventure."

Cringe. Why did she have to go and say something idiotic like that the first time she was meeting these people? If only Mel could control her own tongue better. Hopefully they didn't think she was a complete moron.

His gaze was drawn from the wall slowly as someone introduced themselves to him. An itch to ignore them and go back to gazing at the wall was tempting but he shrugged it off. The blonde haired boy leapt off the top bunk and gracefully tapped down on the floor which wasn't much of a jump at all but it sure was an entrance. He stood up only halfway and met the girl with a polite, semi-stiff bow. Was this too formal? The boy stood up quickly and shaded his gaze from the girl's face almost awkwardly. "Milosh.. Milo is easier and preferred. Durmstrang fifth year." He corrected his full name to one of his nicknames which was common in slightly butchered English. His accent was thicker but not so much so that it was hard to understand. Since 2 summers ago his understanding of the language was better to so he didn't just stare strangely at them. After all, he was the foreigner here.

The boy had adjusted himself to a more comfortable standing position, his hands sliding to his pockets and him biting the inside of his cheek as was his bad habit. "It shimmered." He said bluntly, a bit of confusion sparked in his eye as his brows furrowed in recollection. He had recalled the cabin being visible to his eyes but no one else casting a glance at it. It was the Thestral Cabin. The Thestral was a creature seen by those who had witnessed a death perhaps of a family or loved one as he had heard. He had never paid attention to classes, much less magical creatures so he could have been wrong. Nor had he witnessed death so he wouldn't be able to see a Thestral anyways. The boy ultimately shrugged and glanced around the cabin and before long their next inhabitant entered.

Now the speed was picking up. She had glanced around before noticing the two of them. He gave a small wave. Had she heard his name or did he have to introduce himself again? He didn't want to have to repeat the same thing 10 times today. He wished they just had nametags, it would be easier for everyone and then he wouldn't have to remember names. The girl introduced herself as Mel and that she was from Ilvermorny. She was a bit bubbly and he let out a small smile. They weren't too pushy or loud, maybe this summer wouldn't be too bad? He shook his head, his blonde curls bouncing. "Nice sweater." The boy's honey-colored eyes hand glanced at her outfit as he muttered the small compliment. Was he under dressed? It wasn't that cold. At least not compared to his home country. Hogwarts and Durmstrang had pretty similar temperatures during the summer, the winter on the other hand. Well they had furred robes for a reason hm? Oh whatever he could appreciate sweaters, they were one of his favorite articles of clothing besides collared tropical summer shirts.

He went back to his bunk bed, he was done with socializing for now, if they engaged him in talk he'd reply but he wanted to be comfortable here. The boy plopped on his top bunk and stretched out before laying on his back, his curls dangling down, drawn by gravity. He probably looked goofy but he was just enjoying life right now. Good temperature, nice cabinmates. Milo was ready for a fun-filled summer.

There was no room to judge no matter the situation. There seemed to be something off about the boy who introduced himself as Milo. It seemed like he did not want to talk as much. How did she figure this out? His quick answers, of course. Then what is he doing here? she asked, wondering if she was being too judgmental about the situation. Bloom had an idea... Maybe he needed a push. She knew that she needed that push when she was always feeling like she did not want to interact with anyone.

"You seem very nice for a Durmstrang student," she said, sincerely. The other Durmstrang students that she had run into were extremely rude in some way, shape or form. This one was quick to answer but wasn't just... rude. Bloom appreciated that.

Bloom slightly jumped at the newcomer who came in. She couldn't help but to smile at the girl. She, too, was someone Bloom had never met. She introduced herself as Melody from Ilvermorny. Bloom had yet to meet someone from that school. Though, she did hear about how dramatic their Headmaster was. Perhaps that was how Ilvermorny students were, too?

"Nice to meet you, Melody. I'm Bloom, fifth year at Hogwarts," she reintroduced herself just in case she never knew from before. "I literally thought it would be dark and gloomy in here because that's how a Thestral looks, but I assumed wrong!" she smiled, thankful that the place was warm and inviting.

Bloom looked back at the boy who seemed to go back to his bunk and relax. Did he want to be left alone? Did she say or do something wrong for him to just want to ignore their presence? "Milo... Do you want to go get something to eat later?" she asked, not at all realizing that she was, in some way, asking him out.

Cassie Heather McGregor-Martin was practically turning cartwheels as she and was lead towards the cabin which was apparently known as 'Thestral'. Cassie had no idea what a so-called 'thestral' was, but if it looked anything like the carving on the wall she was fairly sure it was some mash of a pegasus and a skeleton horse from Minecraft. She vaguely wondered if she'd be able to ride one. (This wouldn't be a good idea. Cassie had never ridden any kind of animal before, unless you counted toy ones when she was little.)

The moment she entered the cabin, Cassie was so disorientated that she stepped back out again, completely ignoring the people already inside.
"Oh goodness."
Though the outside of the cabin looked rather small, the inside - Cassie peeked inside again. The inside was larger.
This didn't make any sense whatsoever.
Mind you though, Cassie thought to herself. When has any kind of magic made any sense whatsoever? She reached out to trace her hand along the carved animal on the door, and imagined strength flowing from it into her.

Then she marched inside, pushing the two smaller suitcases along with her knees, pulling the larger one along behind her, and holding her brand-new broomstick in her other hand with pride. She would have looked quite strange to a wizarding child who was used to expansion charms being used on their own trunks and suitcases, because Cassie's were all Muggle - hence why she had three where one Wizarding one would do. The smallest one was just for Summer Camp, and contained just enough clothes for the month. It was the only one she'd open throughout her stay at Hogwarts. The largest was for her clothes and schoolbooks, and the middle one was for everything else. Oh, and her backpack contained her essentials - pens, a notepad and a stack of envelopes for letter-writing, her phone (which she was fairly sure wouldn't work anyway), a whoopie cushion, and a box of trick pencils she'd been given by one of her friends from home over the summer.

The world went quiet, except for the sound of Cassie's footsteps, her soft breathing, and the others' voices. It was strangely earie. "Well, this is weird," she said loudly, her first words to her new cabinmates.

Cassie forced herself to keep walking and stopped in the middle of a seating area, turning to look around.

The cabin wasn't actually too bad, if you ignored the impossibility of it all. Clean and tidy, it radiated an air of brightness and homeliness. Unexpectedly, Cassie found herself quite liking it.

As for her cabinmates, at the moment there were only three, if you didn't include the supervisor, whom Cassie didn't recognise. Actually, Cassie recognised none of them. There was a boy with blonde hair who was lying on a bunk bed, a girl who looked like she was a few years older than Cassie, and another girl who looked a little younger.

Cassie grinned at them all and gave a little wave with the hand which had been pulling along a suitcase a moment earlier. "Hi!" She started pushing her suitcases over to one of the beds. "I'm Cassie; I'm from Beauxbatons. Well, actually, I'm Cassie Heather, but most people can't be bothered to say first names so you can just call me Cassie. Or Cass. Eh, whatever. One of my friends calls me Cabbage sometimes." It was always best to get the two-first-names thing out of the way first, or people might get confused later.

Having reached a bed, Cassie put down her broomstick on the bottom bunk and rubbed her knees. "Ow." Then she looked up at the older girl, who had also appeared to have taken this bed. "Bags I top bunk!"

More weeks at Hogwarts. Nate had thought for some time whether he should really attend. After the events at the ball, his first answer was clearly no, but he decided to give the school and the professors a second chance. But more important was the fact that Irina was also there and to his relief they were both put in the same cabin.

The two walked across the campgrounds and followed the adult to their cabin - Thestral - It didn't take long for the two Russian students to arrive there and as Nate walked up the small steps to the door he looked skeptically at Irina, "Let's see what this will be." He laughed uncertainly but hoped he could get the remaining time past her without getting poisoned. He held the door open for Irina and strode into the room after her, stopping for a moment to look skeptically around the room. "It's so um white" he remarked before turning to the other students and smiling briefly at them.

The cabin was full of girls except for Nate and one other boy. Before he would somehow try to make new contacts he went to the beds and slid his suitcase under one of the lower beds to reserve it at the same time. He took a seat for a moment and let his gaze wander through the rooms. Nate stood back up and ran his hand through his black hair, his eyes once again falling on the boy lying in his bed. He gave him a quick nod, "Hey, I'm Nate." but didn't want to bother him any further though. It seemed like he wanted his peace and who could blame him?

He ticked through the cabin for a moment and took a good look at everything, it seemed almost clinical and very quiet. It was as if everything in here was blanked out but nothing surprised him here anymore. He glanced around once, he seemed to be unobserved and went back to Irina and whispered to her softly, "speaking of rules." He began, referring to the rules they were held to on the way here, "Kind of funny; at a ball poisoning your own students but talking about rules here." He laughed softly and for safety he had said the words in Russian so that even someone who would overhear them would not understand them. He was more concerned about the adults than the students, but one always had to be on the safe side.

The rest seemed to be already engrossed in conversation and on the one hand he didn't want to be rude and interrupt anyone but on the other hand he didn't want to be rude and not introduce himself at all, after all they would spend the next month here together. He waited for an appropriate moment where he wouldn't interrupt anyone before walking over to the other girls to briefly introduce himself, "Hey, I don't want to interrupt you at all but just introduce myself. I'm Nate." He spoke a little quickly but smiled at them. Nate had a hard time with strangers and seemed rather introverted at first glance but once you became friends with him he was the fun buddy. Also his size and muscles had made some people shy away, but in no way was he a dangerous guy. He went to boxing since he was a child, but he was also taught that you do not hit each other. At least not unnecessarily.

Nice? Well that was the first time someone had blatantly called him nice. He didn't care what people thought of him in all honesty but were other Durmstrang students so bad. A small frown appeared on his face as he wondered if all Durmstrang students gave off a bad mood. A few had, but not the ones he had be-friended. He thought back to his older brothers and shivered. Okay maybe some other Durmstrang students were rude or bad. Luckily, he hadn't come off rude. Maybe a bit snappish and grumpy with his quick answers but it was nice to be complimented.

She introduced herself again to the other girl that had stuck around. Ah a fifth year? She could tell she was from Hogwarts already but being from the same year was nice compared to having to socialize with a younger student who was scared out of their mind. Melody, the other girl had a younger aura to her but not in an immature way. She was confident and rather friendly, she'd get along well around the summer camp he was sure.

He was slowly getting lightheaded from his upside position and sat up quickly after hearing a question Bloom had asked. (1) "Kakiye? Oy!" Milo bit back a cuss, reverting to Russian in case something slipped out. His frown deepened and he rubbed his head which had met the white metal poles that surrounded the top bunks. He wondered how many times he was going to do the same thing during the summer. If it was enough he would move to a bottom bunk, even if there wasn't as much privacy that way.

"Food.. later? Okay." He'd nod his head slowly in thought, being oblivious to the way she asked it or what it sounded like. To him, it was better than looking lost and being alone. His stomach grumbled at the thought. Maybe he'd head out in a few after more people showed up. Didn't want to loose his spot and maybe meet a few more new faces that could possibly join him and Bloom in their adventure for food. Or they could always go by themselves. He didn't mind either way.

Milo now sat cross legged on the bunk and rested his chin on the metal bars, taking a deeper look around the cabin he'd be staying in. It was nice, he could easily all asleep in one of those chairs if he wasn't comfortable. His gaze shifted to the entrance as yet a few more people walked through. Just how many people were going to be rooming in here? I mean there was plenty of space but the more crowded it would get the more he'd want to shrink and hide away from everyone. A girl, introduced herself as Cassie. Loud but not like a I want to punch you in the face type loud. Said she was from Beauxbatons, the mainly girl populated school. He nodded in acknowledgement before his eyes glanced over at the black-haired boy. The boy's name was Nate. It was nice to see another boy around in the cabin. Not that girls were any bad but he'd rather not be dragged into gossip or drama during his stay.

His attention got snagged back to the boy again just as he was zoning out again. They had said something, Russian from what he could hear as he was whispering something to another person. Slowly he understood and hopped down from his perch before strolling over to the small somewhat gathered group. (2)"Milo iz Durmstrang, a ty iz Koldovstoretz?" He asked curiously, brushing the hair out of his eyes. Even though he was from Durmstrang the Bulgarian school, he always wanted to go to Koldovstoretz since he was almost fluent in Russian. He even chose to speak Russian as his primary language versus Bulgarian which sounded rough. The language was pretty to him compared to his Bulgarian tongue and his mother had strong Russian roots so from a young age he tried his best to understand it.

It was once again time for Willow's favorite part of going to Hogwarts which was summer camp. Except last year it had actually been a very bad time of stress and worry and ultimately feeling like she had failed but she had also ended up with a boyfriend? It was a very confusing time. But this time there was no big Quidditch match to stress about. There were no lingering crushing feelings, as she was already with the person she had a crush on! Astrea and her had been together since February and she was really excited to spend some time together after being away for a month (which was like a year in 13 year old time).

It also meant she got to see her best friends again, like Flash and Sylvain who she spent the train ride up with. She had been giddy with excitement the whole time, as she felt like she was once again returning home. Especially since now that she was going to be a third year she'd be able to take even more classes, like Divination finally. Buttons of course was by her side, just as excited as she was but taking a peaceful nap as cats do. This time instead of spending their time in tents they would be in cabins that were on the campgrounds, which she was extremely excited for. Especially when she found our there was a unicorn cabin.

Much to her disappointment she was put in the Thestral cabin, she didn't even know a lot about thestrals in the first place. She followed Professor Iwasaki diligently, with Flash actually taking up her bags by the time she went to go grab them. She gave him a grateful smile and ran to the front of the pack. They were led to a cabin that was actually quite nice and light on the inside. It felt cozy and modern, and the best part? "Bunk beds!!!" Willow launched herself onto one of the top bunks, peering over the top and feeling tall for once. "Its official! Thestral Cabin is the best cabin!" Not only because of its bonkers cool decoration, but because Sylvain and Flash were there too!
