1800 Friday, June 18th - Raining

This extremely long year was slowly coming to an end with final exams on top of them, and Santario was left without a way to blow off steam. She could not even go out for her evening run tonight because the sky had seemed fit to bless them with a decent bout of rain. She would not call it a storm, but it was not a light sprinkle either. The last thing she wanted to do was get herself a head cold during the last couple of weeks of school.
Since the Frog Choir was also done for the year, she figured she could pop into the rehearsal room as long as no one else was already in there. After all, supper was over, and it was starting to get late. The rain clouds made it darker outside, and most people would be seeking their cozy common rooms. Which meant her odds were pretty decent.
Thankfully, the rehearsal room was no higher than the fourth floor, which matched the duelling room. This was a trek Santario had been very used to by now. Having made it many times and in record time from there to the dungeons before curfew. She knew exactly how long she would be able to prolong her stay here. She slowly pushed open the heavy oak doors only to hear an abrupt cut-off of chatter from the paintings. It was a tell-tale sign that the room was empty since they did not usually talk when someone was in there.
Slipping through the doors, she would allow them to stay open as she walked over to the grand piano. She did not sit down in front of it but rather placed some papers on the back of it and gently leaned forward against it, putting her back to the door. “I know you’d like to watch, but would you mind?” Her soft silvery voice asked, and the curtains closed around the paintings. She had brought the same song that she had sung for the Apollo Trials in the blossom ball since it was also the piece that she was practicing for the Frog Choir next year.
Santario closed her eyes and started to sing.
Trying to find your hand in the darkness
Trying to hear your words over the rain
Trying to be unveiled but accepted
Trying to mend your heart without the pain
And we fall together
In messy piles upon the floor
But we're made of feathers
Delicate and vulnerable
Scared to fly and scared to fall
(Vocalizations)
Trying to see your world from my window
Trying to find the bridge to where you lay
Trying to love out of the shadows
Trying to love you when you're not ok
And we fall together
In messy piles upon the floor
But we're made of feathers
Delicate and vulnerable
Scared to fly and scared to fall
And we fall together
In messy piles upon the floor
But we're made of feathers
Delicate and vulnerable
Scared to fly and scared to fall
Trying to hear your words over the rain
Trying to be unveiled but accepted
Trying to mend your heart without the pain
And we fall together
In messy piles upon the floor
But we're made of feathers
Delicate and vulnerable
Scared to fly and scared to fall
(Vocalizations)
Trying to see your world from my window
Trying to find the bridge to where you lay
Trying to love out of the shadows
Trying to love you when you're not ok
And we fall together
In messy piles upon the floor
But we're made of feathers
Delicate and vulnerable
Scared to fly and scared to fall
And we fall together
In messy piles upon the floor

Fridays were not Ruka's usual practice days, but the term was slowly coming to an end, exams were over, and there wasn't as much need for studying and homework anymore, so he had decided to make as much use of the Rehearsal Room as he could while he was still at Hogwarts.
He had changed into the black fire retardant clothes with the fire fox pattern he and Jack had gotten from their mother for last year's Talent Show, had gathered two torches and the fire fan he had been gifted by Winnie's mother, and made his way down the stairs with a bounce in his step. The end of the school year always filled him with excitement; Getting away from the castle, the people, the dangers. He was eager for that train ride back home.
So as he made his way to the Rehearsal Room, Ruka hummed a toneless melody to himself, barely paying attention to the people he passed in the hallways. Only when he neared the large double door that hid his destination did he slow down, cease his humming. It wasn't a time that a lot of people would be seeking out the Rehearsal Room, usually, but he still didn't want to risk interrupting anybody with an inconsiderate and loud entrance. So he pushed the door open carefully, was about to set foot inside the room when he heard a melodious voice being echoed from the high walls. There was a girl, by herself, and the song she was singing was hauntingly beautiful, enthralled him for a long moment as he just stood there and listened.
Something inside him told him that he wasn't supposed to be there, that he should move away and give the girl some privacy, but he couldn't pull himself away. Ruka had always admired artists of all sorts, had always found it hard not to dedicate his whole attention to them. He couldn't move, not really, not until the song was over and he found it in himself to finally enter the room and let the doors fall shut behind him. "Wow," he said quietly, would have applauded had it not been for the torches and fire fan occupying his hands. "That was beautiful."
Carefully, he stepped closer, pupils widening in recognition as he got his first glimpse at the girl's face. "Santario, right?" He didn't really know the girl personally, knew of her more than anything. Slytherin, Duellist, same Year as his brother. Anything beyond that was just hearsay. "Sorry, I didn't mean to... That was a beautiful song. Beautifully sung, too." He offered the girl a smile and bent down at the knees to place his torches on the ground. The fire fan was still clutched in his left hand. "Mind if I stick around to get some practice in, too?" He remembered Kazuo asking him why he didn't ask anybody else to sing while he was practicing. "Always nicer to dance with music than without."

Her eyes closed with her hands pressed against the papers she had placed on the piano, her mezzo-soprano voice rang out. The sheet music was there as a reference in case she forgot a lyric or a note run, but her eyes would get to remain closed. Allowing the music to flow through her and thus into the room. She had sung so much when she was a little child while she gardened with her mother, did her chores, and while out taking photos. Then, there had come a time where she did not sing anymore. Her heart could not feel joy enough to produce the music, but then she had found the frog choir and was very slowly learning how to open back up.
In turn, she had started to realize that she had harshly misjudged some of her fellow peers. She worked on trying not to react so severely to things, but it was a slow process. In a way, this song represented that journey in her. As if summoned, a minor test of her change would be heard as her song concluded. Santario gasped softly and spun around, slightly startled after having been ripped out of her own head. Her left hand moved to grasp the white rose locket that hung over her grey t-shirt.
“I-…Thank you” She managed as San ran her free hand through her hair, a light flush hitting her cheeks in embarrassment. “Yes, that’s right.” She confirmed her name, and Santario tried to remember who he was… He was tied to Jack. She knew that much, and she had seen him at the ball. Her sapphire eyes took in his outfit, a brow arching slightly in curiosity. “My apologies, I cannot seem to recall your name.” It was embarrassing to have someone know you and not know them, but she was not sure she had ever actually known his name. “And yes, of course, I think this room is quite big enough for the both of us… What kind of dance do you do?” She nodded at the object that he still had in his hand.
Santario seemed to visibly relax a little as she released the locket that she held in her hand. The patter of the rain against the windows helped put her at ease as well. “I could hum something or just vocalize. Even play the piano a little. Though I can’t promise it would be anything you might want to dance to.” Her piano playing was not nearly as impressive as her singing, but it was something that she practiced from time to time.

His presence had clearly not been expected, and Ruka couldn't blame Santario for reacting rather startled to it. His eyes followed the movement of her hand clasping something over her chest. He recognised the gesture easily from the way he held onto his own locket to calm himself down more often than he liked to admit.
His compliment was accepted, though the way her cheeks flushed spoke of slight embarrassment, which made sense considering she had chosen the Rehearsal Room at this particularly quiet time of day. She probably had not meant for anybody to hear her. With a small nod of acknowledgment when she confirmed her name, Ruka let out a light chuckle when she admitted to not knowing his. "Well, we haven't really met," he pointed out, dismissively waving the hand holding the fire fan to the side. "It's Ruka. My name, I mean." The additional explanation was a habit by now; At times people didn't quite recognise the word as a name and he didn't want Santario thinking he was talking nonsense.
A bright smile spread across his face when she agreed to him sticking around to do some dance practice as well. Usually he liked to stay by himself, though this seemed like a good opportunity to step outside of his comfort zone again, after such a long time of caution, paranoia. "Oh, it's..." He hummed quietly, moved towards one of the walls to kick off his sneakers there and drop his torches. Carefully he pulled his wand from the left pocket of his trousers and aimed a well practiced Incendio at the wicks of his fire fan, eyes glistening with delight once they were alight.
Turning back towards Santario, he grinned brightly, then spun around himself twice, circling his wrists in a way he had learned made the flames create beautiful patterns around him as he moved. He came to a halt, bowing shallowly at the waist and chuckling. "Fire Dance," he finally titled it, lifting his fire fan into the air to twirl it above his head. Working with it was very different from just using his torches, but Ruka found he was enjoying figuring out all the things he was able to do with it. "Unless fire makes you queasy," he added, taking a quick step back, just in case he had crossed Santario's comfort zone. "In which case I can put the fire out and just practice the steps without." Which wasn't quite the same, but he didn't want to make the girl uncomfortable with anything he was doing.
At Santario's words about being able to hum, vocalise or play the piano, Ruka smiled brightly, obviously excited about the thought of getting to hear some more music of any kind. "Whatever you feel most comfortable with is fine by me," he told her sincerely. "Don't feel like you need to give me something to dance to. I can work with anything you throw at me, I promise."

He was correct; they had never formally met. In fact, the ball was probably the only time she had ever seen him up close, and that had not lasted very long, to begin with. “It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Ruka.” Formality was not something that she was good at dropping even with her closest of friends at times, and those that did not know her well enough often got the impression that she was too stiff. She was also trying not to judge him based on Jack, someone she did not exactly enjoy the company of.
As a smile spread across his face, one would also appear on hers as she had learned that sometimes mimicking was easier with her peers. She watched him curiously with her head slightly tilted to the side, her hand letting go of the locket and finally returning to her side. She watched Ruka kick off his shoes and set down some of his equipment. Quietly she would watch on as he lit the ends of his fan and flourished it within the air while spinning. Her eyes followed the fan and took in the patterns it made in the air. A genuine smile spread across her face and touched her eyes, giving the sapphires that extra sparkle. “Fire does not bother me one bit, and honestly, that is probably one of the most stunning things I have ever seen.”
Sure it had just been a small twirl for showmanship, but Santario was a girl confined in a gilded cage of affluent pureblood society. She was an heir to a fortune, and so she had been groomed to impress. Not by her parents, but any time her grandmother in France had been able to sink her claws into her, she had, and now that Santario lived with her, it was constant. It did not matter how you wrapped it though a cage was still a cage. “If you say so, I am still practicing, so this probably will not be perfect.” She did not practice nearly as much as her grandmother would have liked her too, and thus she was no child prodigy when it came to the piano.
Santario would walk around to the front of the piano, taking a seat on the bench while lifting the cover protecting the keys from dust. She would start to play a song that she had initially found the sheet music to in a public library though she had no idea its true origins. As her fingers moved along the keys, she would hum along, glancing up at Ruka every now and again. She had not lied in the beginning; she would have been rusty missing a note here or hitting the wrong one there, but the longer she played, the smoother it would become. She would choose to loop the song if need be, though if Ruka got really fancy, she might get distracted and stop playing to watch.

@Santario Martin
The formal way in which Santario responded to his introduction made Ruka want to laugh - It reminded him too much of other people, Evelynn, Flash - but he suppressed the urge to instead offer the girl a smile and a nod in acknowledgment. If his hands hadn't been full with his equipment he would have offered her his hand to shake. However, as she didn't make a move to offer her's either, Ruka felt like she wouldn't hold it against him.
As he kicked his shoes off and dropped his torches, Ruka was aware of the eyes on him, so he took extra care of the way he moved when he twirled his fire fans around. It seemed to have paid off when Santario commented on it having been the most stunning thing she had ever seen. It put a delighted grin on his face, eye sparkling with genuine excitement. "It's really quite beautiful, isn't it?" he agreed reverently, letting his gaze drift to the playfully flickering flames.
Santario's agreement to accompanying his dance was followed by her moving towards the piano as Ruka stood and watched, a sense of tranquility filling his senses once the first chords sounded through the room. He let his eyelids flutter shut for a moment, lifted his arms to stretch and let the music fill his veins until it had replaced everything else. He moved carefully as he slowly twirled his way to where he had dropped his equipment so he could pick up the second fan and set the wicks on fire with the help of the first.
He gracefully moved back towards the piano, would offer Santario a smile if she looked his way, then let the melody guide his movements; The slow rotation of his wrists would cast a beautiful trail of flames into the air as his feet gracefully tiptoed in a semi-circle. Each time the intensity of the music built, Ruka would leap, turn to his side midair and land on the balls of his feet with a shallow bend of his knees. The minor hiccups in the music didn't bother him - There was a passion in the melody he could work with, could move to, let the fire dance to with their insistent playful cackling, the blazing trails of burnt orange and red illuminating everything around him like a near soundless firework.
Despite the fact that he had told Kazuo that he usually got too lost in dancing to hear the music anyway, it seemed to be the only thing he could really focus on at this point in time. His steps became more confident the longer Santario played, until he had worked out exactly when to repeat which moves. He lost himself in it right up until Santario would stop playing, which was when he would come to a halt as well, taking a moment for his body to slow down again. A wide smile would spread across his face, forest green eyes sparkling with awe. "Beautiful," he found himself saying, slightly out of breath. "Thank you, that was..." He lifted his left arm, wiped some sweat off his forehead with his sleeve while taking care not to set anything on fire. "You said you're only practicing? That was amazing. How long have you been playing?"

She would watch him off and on during the parts where she was comfortable not looking at her fingers while she played. His walking closer to her made her look up, and she would return the smile at the cost of missing a note. Though it would not seem to take long for her to fall into a groove of being able to watch his movements while her fingers glided across the keys. Perhaps San had fibbed a little about how good she was; she had been playing for a while she just had not played recently. Rusty was the proper word for it. Granted, she was not in the habit of giving herself a lot of credit in certain areas of her life either.
As he stopped and her song came to an end, she grinned and gave him a few quick claps. “Mine? No, what you do is a work of art that can never be captured on canvas.” While she suppressed the urge to actually say it, she wanted to photograph him dancing sometime in the future. Not just because she thought he would look stunning in some of the stills San felt she could take, but because they could also get developed into moving photos, the only way she thought that the beauty of his art could be encapsulated. Perhaps, someday when they knew each other better… If they lived that long.
“Oh well… going on five years now, I think. Yeah, that’s right. As of this summer, I’ll have been doing it for five years. I do not practice as much as I should, though. How about you? Your dancing is quite impressive. I have never seen anything like it before, truly breathtaking.” Truth be told, it was mesmerizing, and if she had not had to be so focused on playing, she would have just stared at him like an amazed idiot.
She could see herself doing this more often though accompanying someone else performing their own art. It would make it worth it to practice more usually. When she played the piano alone, it was because she was sad. It was a telltale sign that not even her closest friends knew about, and why would they? She isolated when she was upset, and finding time in the rehearsal room to be by herself was not hard, and neither was the room of requirement when she really did not want to be disturbed. “I know we just formally met, but I think we should do this more often.” If he agreed, he would be met with a gleeful smile, the rare kind that gave her eyes that extra sparkle.
