Back in London, Simon was big on service to his community. He devoted some of his time to volunteering, wanting to be giving as it was in his selfless nature to help others. He was fortunate in many ways and wanted to do what he could so that others that didn't have as much, no matter the circumstance, had a little more than they did when he first started.
When he heard about the Grounds Keeper at Hogwarts proposal to have students help with the landscaping, he was instantly out. Having discovered fairly recently what he was - it seemed more important now than ever that he didn't go into the sun. His aversion to the sun wasn't just some genetic condition; it was half of his entire genetic makeup.
Still, the few times he ventured out to the Hogwarts grounds he discovered how beautiful it really was. The Scottish Highlands were vibrant with various bright colors of different patches of flowers here and there and the waters of the Great Lake seemed to mimic one's mood, either flowing with small waves or being as still as glass.
The Great Lake was one of the places he loved best. If he could better it somehow, help take out any invasive species to the area to help the strength and beauty of the area - shouldn't he try to help? After all, he could be outside during the day - just not for very long.
Simon signed up, feeling a bit of regret at first but would follow through with it. In time he was given the name of another first year student in Gryffindor that he would be paired with. Come the day of June 15th, he lathered up on sunscreen, tossed on his hooded sweatshirt, and headed out to the Great Lake. He waited patiently as volunteer after volunteer met their partner and began. He was waiting for someone named Noah Harris, someone he hadn't met before. He had his name on a piece of paper but each time an unfamiliar Gryffindor. Was he coming?
Simon watched as two more partner pairs got to work before a young boy, most likely a first year, approached. "Hi! Noah Harris?" he asked hopeful. The boy shook his head. "No, but he's one of my dorm mates. ...He's caught up in the Hospital Wing...a bad potions assignment gone wrong. Lost a bit of his memory and his eyebrows too," the boy exclaimed. Simon nodded and thanked him before he joined his partner, someone that the other Gryffindor boy seemed to already know.
Simon stood there and sighed, hoping that this Noah Harris boy was going to be okay but also wondering if he should be doing the errand on his own. The Grounds Keeper had stressed that they work in partners for safety but he now was left with no partner.

Winter had been waiting for this day, though the sun bothered her she loved nothing more to be outside in the beautiful land. She too lathered herself well in sunscreen, throwing on her black and red checkered hoodie, and pulling the hood over her head. Winter must've looked covered from head to toe, for she was pretty sensitive to sunlight. Her friend from the Ravenclaw house had previously asked her to do the errand with them, and with no hesitation winter agreed.
Winter had gotten up early to make sure she would be ready in time, rushing her way down to the great lake where they had planned to meet. Scanning around the area, she had seen her friend nowhere in sight. She sat down and decides to wait. After a while a student of which she had recognized from the Ravenclaw house walked up to her. "Hello there, are you winter?"the girl asked. "u-uhm.. yes... can i help you? she responded a bit confused by the girl randomly walking up to her from a group of people. "I was told to let you know your partner won't be able to make an appearance, he had to return home for a family emergency" the girl spoke softly. Winter sighed "I understand thank you for letting me know.." she said clearly upset, yet worried about her friend.
The girl returned back to the group as winter fiddled with the grass. She considered doing the errand by herself, or perhaps even just returning to the dorms. Scanning the area once again she noticed a boy standing alone, a few thoughts ran through her mind. Had the boy been waiting on someone, or perhaps not found a partner yet? Winter wasn't about to make accusations without proof so instead, she waited, waited to see if this boys partner would show. Would she be alone this evening or would there be a chance for her to team up with this boy and do the errand. Afterall, they seemed to be oddly alike. But everything would happen in time. All she could now do was wait.

Approaching @Winter Wolfhartz
He was now without a partner.
That wouldn't have mattered to Simon. He always had rather unremarkable strength and knew he would have no problem digging some holes by himself but the Grounds Keeper had stated that they should be partnered up - for safety.
It seemed rather silly, but then again Simon didn't want to go against someone's wishes. Sure, he had broken rules more than several times before but that was always in fun and never out of direct disobedience or at someone's expense. Now what would he do?
His eyes came to a girl across the way. She too had a hooded sweatshirt on for a rather warm day and he wondered what her reasoning was for it. He wore them because he could pull the hood up and offer himself some protection from the sun. He doubted hers was for the same reason.
She was standing all alone and now and again she'd look around at others coming. Perhaps she was waiting for her partner to come. Maybe he could help find them since he was planning to head back to the castle and forgo the event. "Hi there," he said kindly as he approached. He now could see that she was rather pale, like himself. That made him instantly curious. Was she like him?
"Looking for your partner?" he asked, ready to help. "Mine isn't coming and so I figured I'd head back in. I can scout yours out in the castle if you'd like, tell them to hurry themselves up," he smiled. Still though, despite the smile, he was a little disappointed that his lack in a partner meant no errand for him. He actually was hoping to get in a bit of time on the Grounds that day.

Without a partner what was winter to do?
Winter thought more about it and she decided not to go inside,it was such a beautiful day, though the rules clearly stated you SHOULD have a partner it never said you needed one. She sighed and turned to look at the castle again, thinking everything over once more.
She thought about what the Ground Keeper meant by "for safety" what could be so dangerous about plants? They wouldn't allow students to do anything too dangerous, right? Winter though shy and self oriented just found odd ways of getting in trouble, what would she be risking? Perhaps detention.., no she doesn't want to go there again anywhere but detention.
Just as she was about to begin walking back she heard a voice greet her. She turned to look at the boy, her red eyes gleaming in the light. Pulling her hoodie over her face a tad more she responded in a soft voice, just loud enough to hear. H-hi..? she was confused by this stranger, nobody usually spoke to winter without reason.
She studied his looks and realised his pale skin, his aura he put off she could sense he wasn't human. Could he sense her too? She wondered, a bit spaced out with her thoughts, until he began speaking once again. He had a certain tone in his voice, something was upsetting him yet he was still ready to help others.
Oh.. my partner actually isn't coming either... but thanks anyways" she said, now a bit louder then before. Had he really talked to her just to be helpful? Winter already had a good felling about this boy, strong character, and an obvious good personality. uhm.. i-i'm Winter.., Winter Wolfhartz" she introduced herself, putting her hands in her hoodie pocket, obviously nervous for reasons even her herself didn't know of. And you are..? she asked, wondering who this nice boy was. Perhaps they could be partners for the errand, it was obvious by both their body language neither of them wanted to return to the castle.

Offering up a partnership with @Winter Wolfhartz
Winter. It was a pretty name but not one he had heard someone being named before. He had heard Summer and named based on some of the months of the year - like April, May, June. Even in the wizarding world it seemed that her name was unique. "Winter, I like that," he said with a smile before he even responded.
"I'm Simon. Simon Kincaid," he introduced himself to the girl. He glanced around as it now seemed as though everyone was getting to work. Now or never. He had an idea and it was worth a shot. "So I was wondering if you could give me some help on digging a hole. The last guy ditched out on me," he joked, his smile widening. Okay, it was a horrible pun and a horrible sort of line but the meaning was there. Maybe she wanted to partner up for this assignment since they were both left without help.
"I can't say I've ever dug holes before, but I think I'd be pretty good at it," he tried to convince her by building herself up. He was going to mention something about how they'd want to be relatively quick though, sort of. He didn't want to stay out int he sun all too long and he was already risking a pretty bad burn by doing this. Still, the days at Hogwarts during his first year were coming to an end and he wanted to get out and enjoy the castle and grounds as much as he could in those last weeks.

He had seemed to take interest, and think about her name for a slight second before a big smile had formed on his face. Winter smiled a bit when he told her that he liked her name. not long after, he introduced himself. "y-your last name is very interesting i've never heard anything like it before.." she said, truly liking his name. "a-anyways its nice to meet you simon..." she added.
She watched as he glanced at the already working people around the two of them. Not but a few seconds later, he offered to have her partner up with him. She smiled and laughed at the rather punny joke "y-yea sure" she said. After all both their partners had ditched on them so why not? Simon seemed nice and perhaps they could become friends. "i'd love to" she added, her expression now brightened.
"Back home i always helped my neighbor with gardening so this should be pretty easy" she said, looking at simon with a warm smile. "I'm sure you'll do great!" she assured him. She could sense he was a bit tense and thought it couldv'e been the idea of being in the sun for too long. "Oh and don't worry we shouldn't take long, i'm quite fast with this kind of thing... perhaps after we finish we can hang out..?" She questioned hoping he would agree. "you know, to get to know each other better.. she said hoping not to sound weird, considering they had just met, she didn't want to weird him out by asking to hang out too soon.

Beginning to dig with @Winter Wolfhartz
She offered that after they could hang out, get to know each other a little better. "Winter, are you - "he paused for a dramatic effect of hesitation, " - are you coming onto me?" Simon tilted his head just a little, almost resembling a puppy that didn't understand what it's owner expected from it, but then he smiled. "I'm kidding, I'm kidding," he quickly stated. "But you know, in the movies they always go for coffee to get to know each other a little better."
They'd haw to grab some refreshing water or something because he was not one for coffee.
Simon passed her over a shovel and they headed towards the edge of the Great Lake, where there were some invasive plants that were attempting to grow and take over some native wildflowers that should be there. It was a good place to start.
"Your neighbor... was it a vegetable garden or more of flowers?" Then there were always those that just called the bit of green space that they had with their home 'the garden' so it could have been that as well - landscaping. His aunt loved flowers and she planted a lot of them, often bringing some into the house so that Simon could enjoy a bit of the outdoors while inside since he couldn't go out much during the daylight.

Can You Dig It?
Simon had made a dramatic pause in his sentence, before making a joke. Winter rubbed her arm as she laughed "haha o-of course not, silly" she said with a smile. She loved funny things, jokes, silly faces, well pretty much anything that could make her laugh. Simon had mentioned coffee, but eh.. winter wasn't a big fan of coffee, unless of course her aunt made it. Rather than coffee what could they get? Perhaps water or maybe even butter beer at the leaky cauldron.
"Mhm! Perhaps we can go get water afterward? After all its going to be hot and a refreshing glass of water would probably be amazing" she stated, thinking ahead of time. "I'm sure we can talk as we work also" winter added as she scanned the whole entire area, planning out things to do.
Winter gripped the handel of the shovel as it was passed to her, and nodded at simon as if to say 'thank you'. Following simon over to the edge of the lake, she noticed the invasive plants attacking the natural flowers and was all ready to save the beautiful, wild flowers. This was the perfect place to start.
"I mean it was a bit of both the yard was all flowers but they do have their own little green house in the corner for fruits and veggies" she replied with a smile, remembering the times she spent back home. Winter was very fond of flowers, especially roses and sunflowers. "I'm a plant lover myself but my aunt won't really allow flowers in her yard... she says that they attract too many bugs for her liking". The outdoors was amazing, and the sun was so gorgeous, but winter couldn't stay out during the day time for too long before burning up. But she still enjoys sitting in the light of the moon.

Finishing the task with @Winter Wolfhartz
He understood. While he did like many of the creatures that the world had to offer, bugs were on the low list. They ate crops, could spread disease, and they liked to bite. When someone like him didn't have all too much time to spend out in the sun as it was, he didn't like to be bothered by such pests.
The two worked hard, tending to their one area. It still seemed odd to him - afterall, wouldn't the professors have a spell that could rid the area of anything unneeded and replace other things in a quick moment. Why was there a need for the students to do this at all? Still, maybe he would have made a friend out of the situation and that alone was reason enough.
"I think it looks pretty good," he said, stepping back a moment to take a break and to also look upon their progress from the day.
He came over to Winter and took her shovel before taking it back to the shed with the other supplies. He always tried to leave things the way that he found them or better than he found them. If living in America, the boy would have made quite a good Boy Scout.
"Alright then, I think this calls for the end of our work day. Time to head back into the castle (and thankfully get out of the sun), wash up a little, and meet for a nice refreshing drink. Catch you in the Common Room in ten minutes?" He then flashed a smile to her before hurrying inside. Wayyyyyy too much sun for one day.

Can You Dig It?
Winter herself hadnt minded bugs, you know just the ones that bite- or sting. It was one reason winter also had a hatred for daylight, not only was it a pain to be out it ( literally ) but also there were hornets EVERYWHERE you would be lucky to walk outside and not catch a glimse of one. It also had become a sort of habit in the neighborhood, getting chased, stung, or even almost going head to head with one whilst walking. But after a major breakout the local mayor thankfully had the area cleared.
After all the plants were saved, and a few more were planted in the opening spaces, winter and Simon had finally completed their tasks. Sure it was a hastle but at least neither of them were left to do it on their own. Plus now they had both made another friend! Simon had taken the shovels back to their original place, putting they back exactly the way they had been found. Winter smiled, as he returned to her.
It was obvious, both of the pale Puffs needed to get out of the blistering hot sun, thank god for sunscreen. She nodded, "Alrighty, sounds good to me! Yea of course ill meet ya there-" she responded as he darted away. She hadnt 'ran' towards the castle, it was more of a speed walk, i mean after all she was tired, and being in the sun wasnt helping. Eventually she would have made it to her destination, now off to the common room!
