Dakota skated around the courtyard with ease, it was a slower day today and so it made it easier and safer for her to rollerskate. It had been a amusing week with her friends and herself as she learned a new song on her ukulele, was able to get her drawing done of a friend and his cat and a few more things. Life at this moment seemed to be going smoothly, the only big problem seeming to be returning home. She was anxious about that, anxious and slightly excited. She had learned after August her and her siblings would be going to America to see her late fathers parents and their quaint farm. It use to be a tobacco farm but now they grew crops, corn, green beans, squash things of that sort.
As her mind drifted to this place she was no longer paying attention to her surroundings. Instead, she focused on being able to sit on the back of the tractor with her siblings and possibly her younger cousin and be able to help pick crops. It was something she hadn’t done in years, the last photo of this happening being when Dakota was six, she had dirt along her apple cheeks and a corn in her hands. She was so caught up in her thoughts that she didn’t even notice the person she was about to slam into.

Lance was walking on the courtyard, his nose stuck in a book. He had just visited the library and picked up some information about Hogwarts, as he was eager to learn. Though he loved reading, his mind was also elsewhere... He was thinking back to the the train where he overheard some first-year boys talking about muggle-borns, and how they were so-called, "mud-bloods", or dirty bloods. Lance did not totally understand the phrase, but got the main idea... muggle-borns were not true wizards/witches.

He did not know whether he agreed with the idea, but did not want to stand out from the boys. Not realizing he had zoned out, he focused his eyes and realized he had to start the book all over again. Lance cursed under his breath as he turned his head up. He couldn't see clearly what had happened, as he was on the ground in a matter of seconds.

He stood up, angered and irritated as the day was annoying enough. He looked up to see Dakota, a girl that one of his friends had pointed out at the day of the sorting. "I know you... you're the muggle-born my friend was talking about." "What did you think you were doing running into me?!" He was trying not to lose his temper. " Explain yourself you filthy mudblood!"

Suddenly, it seemed as though time had frozen. All was silent and all eyes were on him. He gasped at his own words and hid his face in shame. "I-.. I didn't mean that. I'm sorry, I was just thinking about something said to me and it slipped out.." He was stumbling with his words and found it hard to speak.

Dakotas head was pounding, last time she had slammed into the fountain, drenching her and another Hufflepuff girl, but that situation turned into a skating lesson. She rubbed at her temples, hoping she could relieve some of the pain in her head as she closed her eyes tightly. Her legs were splayed out as that was how she had landed, luckily, it seemed like she would only receive some bruising and scraps. But what happened next she wasn’t expecting.
The boy was yelling at her, sure, she had slammed into him, but it had clearly been a accident and while she would understand him being merely angry she didn’t think it required yelling. She jolted lightly when he screamed at her but the use of the word “mud-blood” seemed to be the thing to catch her attention. She starred at him, both a bit horrified at his words and upset. From what she had read on the vocabulary for the wizarding world, Mud-blood was a derogatory term for muggle-born wizards.
Quite quickly, her crystal blue eyes filled with tears, the pain in her head, being screamed at and then being called mud-blood had set her off. Trying to force the tears down she blinked up at Lance “I—it’s alright, I’m sorry I ran into you.” she spoke with genuine sorry, though by now it wasn’t truly her that would be expected to apologize.

Lance had held his hand out to her, still hiding his face in shame. When he looked at her, he noticed the tears in her eyes and apologized sincerely. He knew it was partly his fault, as he was too focused in his thoughts to notice the girl. He was not injured at all and offered to take her to the hospital wing as soon as he had done everything he could to help.

He felt ashamed. His dad being a muggle, would be extremely disappointed. Lance fidgeted with his wand and ran his fingers through his hair, not knowing what else to say to Dakota. His face was sweating profusely and people were still staring at him. he wiped the sweat off his face and thought about what he could to do help the girl. His thoughts swirled in his head, he had never done anything this bad to insult and upset someone. He had zoned out again and when he zoned back in he remembered to help the girl.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a muggle item. "I don't think I am allowed to give this to you, but it's a muggle medicine that my dad gave me.." The use of the word muggle reminded him of what he had just said, and he quickly offered the pill to her.

When offered the muggle medicine Dakota shook her head lightly, wiping at her eyes. She didn’t want to take it, but she thanked him non-the-less for the offer. She could tell he was sorry about what he had said to her but it still hurt, what with her history of becoming a emotional punching bag for people to take their frustrations out on her verbally in her muggle school. She had taken his hand and was now back on her feet, the pounding in her head slowly starting to fade as she let out a breath. In her blue eyes it was obvious she was still teary but she didn’t seem upset at Lance.
”Really, it’s alright, honestly I should be the one apologizing, I ran into you.” Dakota, even through her sorrow and pain filled mind, was still deeply sorry for this. She could’ve injured the boy, cuts or possibly even a broken bone. She knew all too much about fracturing a bone as it had happened when she was first learning to skate and threw her hands in front of her to stop a fall. The beating sound in her ears slowly faded and she blinked at Lance yet again “thanks you for helping me.” she sighed, he deserved thanks in Dakotas mind, her voice now being able to be compared to what honey would sound like, soft and sweet.

Lance put the medicine back into his pockets. He understood why she didn't want to take it and he had refused all of the thanks. He was shifting around, unable to express how sorry he was. All of his irritation had seemed to go to himself at what he had done.

"Don't apologize to me.. what I said was horrible and it was also partly my fault, I'm new to all of this stuff and I really wish I could help you further." He made sure that the girl was not injured badly before he held out his hand. "I'm Lance.. Lance Palmer, thank you for forgiving me but what I did was not right at all."

Lance knew that what he had done was both offensive and rule-breaking. He was taught to never lie and own up to his actions but this time it would be hard. "I assume you've read the rules and know what I've done.. it's your decision to turn me in or not and I assure you, your choice whether you do or do not turn me in will have no effect on our friendship if you even want to start one at this point." He was filled with guilt and did not want to be caught, but he wanted Dakota to know that he knew he did not do the right thing and that nobody deserves it.

Dakota blinked at Lance for a moment before taking his hand and shaking it ”Dakota Olson..” she knew what he had done was wrong and the hurt she felt was undeniable as well as understandable, but she wasn’t willing to turn him in. It wasn’t something Dakota was likely to do anyway, her personality and want to please people makes sure of that fact. She was gentle and soft, her gaze saddened but kind, she had a certain air of friendliness to her.
Shaking her head lightly she blinked at Lance, sighing “I’m not going to turn you in.” maybe he deserved it, maybe if her friends had been here they would’ve turned him in, but this was her choice. Of course it hurt to be called that and it was breaking the rules but Dakota wouldn’t be able to bring herself to turn him in.
She was balancing on her skates, giving Lance a weak smile as her head finally ceased its pain. She slowly began to feel a bit better, she was willing to forgive him and possibly try a friendship. But it may throw a wrench in the trust she put in Lance. “I..suppose we can be friends.”.

Lance gave her a weak smile. Starting off at the wrong foot was not his perfect introduction, but at least he had been forgiven. "Thank you.. I'd be a shame to have detention on one of the first days though I do deserve it." He wanted to say something about what he had said but did not want to upset nor remind her of the incident so kept quiet.

When she had accepted to be friends he smiled sincerely, happy to find such a sweet person. He stood tall, though looked puny to most. He chewed on his fingernails while giving the staring kids a glare. One of the most annoying things to him was when people would stare without a word at him, even though he has done it himself countless times.

He looked back at the girl while he balanced on the skates. Lance was rather concerned and remembered when he had got injured before Hogwarts. Injuries are rather far easier to heal with some magic than to have it heal themselves. He looked at the girl and wanted to help her to the best of his abilities. "Are you badly hurt, those bruises look like they hurt, would you like to go to the hospital wing?" He gave a weak smile and told Dakota it would be better to have it healed immediately.

Dakota let’s out a deep, giving Lance a gentle look “I don’t need to go to the Hospital wing, a few bruises will hog away quickly.” she gave him a gentle smile, quietly thanking him for the offer. Her eyes were no longer teary and are now soft. She sighed, tucking her arms against herself as she relaxed, her mind calming down as she peers at Lance. She had been quick to forgive, something that could either put her in danger one day or help her make friends out of unlikely people, a blessing or a curse some might say.
Worry shined in her eyes now, blinking at Lance she began to speak again “are you alright?” though Dakota had slammed into him, making it possible she took the most of the force, she also knew he could be injured. Puffing, she stood straight, use to balancing as she had been skating for years. Her words seemed to be almost a hum now, yet still gentle. Any of her friends would be able to say she’s always like this, worrying for someone else rather than herself, comforting someone and never herself. She was a empathetic person but that could also be her downfall.

Lance stretches his arms out, showing no marks. "I'm totally fine, no damage done." he was excited to have a new friend, especially someone like her. he was quick to lose his temper and often found it hard to make friends because of it. Though it has gotten better over the years, he still cannot fully control his anger.

He looked at the worry in Dakota's eyes and assured her that he was fine, with no marks nor injuries. He was unsure why she cared if he was hurt but let the thought slip by, it was nice. He looked at Dakota, admiring her kindness and talent for skating even if she did crash a few times. His mother used to skate and is an incredibly patient woman.

Lance had glared down to the ground and saw the book he had dropped. He bent down and picked up the book, somehow undamaged. He flipped over the book and read the title once more. He opened the book and skimmed through the pages, finding nothing that interests him. He wondered why he even checked out the book, probably just for something to do. He reached his arm out with the book in his hand. "This book's no good for my use, doesn't interest me.. would you like it?" Lance gave Dakota a kind look.
