Those In Power Can Break The Rules
December 17th, Minutes Before Prefect Curfew
Patrolling in pairs was always a pain. Ever since this whole lockdown thing, Jack’s patrol ‘pals’ have really been cramping his style. Not to say he didn’t enjoy spending time with his other prefect, it’s just that he wasn’t a fan of the feeling of playing goodie two shoes. It might be a generalization, but the majority of prefects needed to relax a little bit. Tonight Mr. Warren had the pleasure of walking around with a newer prefect, Sylvain Wyllt. He had met him at the Halloween masquerade, but for only a brief moment. Maybe it was time to corrupt the fresh blood.
With a yawn Jack lazily yawned as the pair started to make their final rounds, before looking to his new companion. “Alright, Sly.” He, of course, decided to go with Sly instead of Sylvain. The Hufflepuff thought himself rather clever for the not so clever name, but still, it made Jack grin. “How long you been prefectin’ for?” Of course he didn’t wait for an answer before continuing. “You havin’ fun with et? Like the extra bit of power? I do. It sucks tha’ we still ‘ave a curfew too, even as prefects. Kind of bullshite, innit?” Stuffing his cool hands into the single large pouch at the center of his hoodie’s midsection, the boy finally dropped his head back and with a slight turn of his neck looked at Sylvain. “you agree, yeah?” The whole demeanor of the guy was annoyingly relaxed, but the grin he wore was warm and friendly. The hint of mischief on his face was a dead giveaway for what he was going to say next. “Know what? We should do something fun.” Power is meant to be abused, and any rule breaker worth their salt could tell you that

It was pretty clear to Sylvain why Prefect's travelled in pairs. It made it a whole lot easier to confront rulebreakers when you had a partner, that and it was a whole lot less boring to have someone to talk to while you made your rounds. Jack Warren was his partner of the day, and despite his lax aura, there was a bit of congeniality to his goonish grin. The kind of congeniality that warranted paying attention to. So he was quiet while they made their tour of the castle. At least for the most part. He had spent much of their time together observing what Warren did, and how he made his choices. There was always something to learn when you watched people and each person taught him some sort of valuable lesson.
It didn't take long to figure out what kind of lesson Jack was going to teach him, but he was still curious to learn it.
"M'name's Sylvain Jack. You know that." His words were a swift, but puny correction. Meant to be more of a reminder than actual protest at a new nickname. He didn't mind if Jack really wanted to call him Sly, but he wanted to make sure it wasn't just to tease him. Recent things considered, he was still pretty sensitive about his name. Being teased about it would only make things worse. Sylvain thought for a second as Jack's line of questioning moved on without him. He'd been a Prefect since October, only having been accepted shortly before the two met at the Halloween party.
Sylvain nodded in affirmation as Jack quizzed him as to whether or not he enjoyed being a Prefect. He was enjoying himself. If not because of the extra power then because of the increased stipend and the freedom to use the Prefect bathrooms instead of the public ones. Two things he would gladly keep to himself until his dying breath. When Jack asked about curfew, Sylvain's entire mood became a shrug. It wasn't that he agreed with the curfew, he would normally have spent most of his time in the library or the common room anyways, but rather that he didn't understand the Huffle's issue with being out late until he mentioned having fun.
"Alright," he said, eyebrow raising in interest as they finished their patrol. It was just a few minutes before curfew started, but that didn't stop his spirit of inquiry from acquiescing in the slightest. If he'd caught the look of mischief, he might have been less curious but instead he was busy checking to see who all was around them. They were alone. "What do you have in mind?" If they were going to get up to "no good", he'd expect there to at least be a good reason. Fun was a good enough reason. Though what Jack thought of fun was still under investigation.

"We are goin' a lil' nighttime stroll, Sly." Jack wasn't trying to make fun of Sylvain's name, it was just that he found it cooler and easier to say. 'Sylvain' was too posh for his liking. Of course, the evil little grin that he wore was like a magnet for trouble, and it wasn't going away for some time. Honestly, Hogwarts at night was a horrifying place. All the creepy crawlies will be out, and hopefully, the two could find something interesting. At least something interesting enough to write down in his red leather-bound journal that he had snuggly stowed away in his hoodie pocket. "We could always try n' see if the metal men walk around at night. I heard rumors tha' they will drag roamin' kiddos to the headmaster's office if they catch em'" Obviously a lie. He knew from past excursions that the suits of armor don't do shit, aside from an occasional rattle or shifting of their helmets. "I think I could take em' mano a mano, Whadya think? They can't be tha' tough." Soon enough the torches will be extinguished and the castle will go dark, leaving the two in eerie darkness. Jack honestly couldn't wait.
"You haven't snuck out before, 'ave ya? I betchya a goodie two shoes, huh? Ain't nothin' wrong with that, but we are gonna find some secrets tonight, mate." A gentle, not so gentle, sock in the arm is what followed his declaration of adventure! "Now, you can't snitch if we get in trouble tho. I got your back, you get mine. That sound like a plan?" His heart was already beating in anticipation of imminent rule-breaking, and he swung his head to get his mop of hair out of his eyes. Good thing he wore his running shoes because if they got a whiff of trouble, he'd book it.

"It's Syl," he corrected the other boy quietly. Again. Still unsure if Jack heard him or not, Syl waited for him to stop speaking while holding onto the correction silently for later.
Investigation of the metals suits of armor lining the halls was an interesting proposition. He'd not really taken the time to slow down and peak inside one yet, and curiosity did grow as Warren prodded him along, insisting on the pair taking a night-time stroll. Concern grew on his features when Jack insisted he could take one on all by himself but then a bit of a suppressed chuckle wiggled it's way out from behind the seriousness. "I'd pay to see you try," he said in kind to the question.
Sylvain might have taken it personally as Jack called him a goody two shoes. If he were wrong that was. Being honest with himself, there was a great deal of curiosity what the castle was like at night and Jack being the bad influence he was had put Sylvain in a position the curious teen found hard to argue against. His choices were either to break the rules and satisfy his own curiosity, or choose to remain willfully ignorant of the castle corridors nightlife. It was hardly even a decision for a boy who would've sold an entire civilization for a single secret. How could say no? The punch in the shoulder wasn't welcome in the slightest though. He disliked fighting.
"Ow," Sylvain said rubbing his arm dramatically as if Jack had struck him with more force than he had playfulness. It was probably enough of a reaction to notice that Syl wasn't all that used to rough housing.
No apparent offense was being taken to Jack calling him a snitch, mostly because it was the reason he had become a prefect at all. That Syl had a knack for being a tattle-tale was exactly why Jack was taking his due diligence. Making him promise not to snitch on him was warranted. "I promise," he said still miserable from the sock in the shoulder. "I got your back if you've got mine, but we should at least try to come up with a reasonable explanation in the event we get caught..." his voice would trail off as he thought up an excuse. He didn't want to sound more like a worry-wart than he already had, but getting caught in a fib would only dig the hole they were climbing into a that much deeper.
"Oh!" Syl exclaimed, the lights turning on behind his eyes. "You got any candy on you?" He smiled back with an awkward grimace, one that said trust me.
"And please, call me Syl."

"I'd pay to see you try," Is this some sort of challenge!? Jack scoffed loudly at the thought of him losing. In the boy's head, he was the world's best fighter and basically unbeatable. The thought that anybody thought he was less than a lousy suit of armor was just unimaginable. "Well I'd win, and you'd be out some sickles, I'm jus' sayin' they don't seem like too of a challenge. The ol' hunks of metal can't even throw a proper insult." As if warming up, the prefect placed a hand on his right shoulder and swung his bent arm around in circles like he was about to start throwing punches. It was best to warm up before fighting an imaginary metal-plated enemy. As if fists would do anything to a suit of armor, and a magical set to bat "Plus I'm pretty badass, y'know."
The conversation quickly carried on, as a result, Jack quickly forgot about his MMA debut against the iron ensemble of injury. If ADHD wasn't a thing in the magical fantastical wonderous hell hole that is the wizarding world, Jack would have the closest thing to it. The boy had the attention span of an acorn, and honestly, he would be more than fine with being toted around by a squirrel.
Finally! a promise! He can't go back on his word now! Jack might not be the most nieve person in the world, but when it came to promises... it was a different story. A person should never go back on their promises. It was just a law of nature that most people didn't know about. Jack was like a Fey. A promise binding and a broken promise was the quickest way to make an enemy out of Mr. Jack Warren. However, Sly's prompting of an excuse was a very valid point. Bringing a hand to his chin like a weathered detective, Jack squinted in thought. "We could just say that we were following some kid out after curfew?" He suggested, "I mean, we can't be faulted for doing our jobs. I mean we are here to keep the student body safe..." Ah yes, the quandary of prefects doing their jobs.
Breaking the boy's train of thought, the idea of candy of course threw him completely off track. "Candy? Do I? Is tha' even a question, Sly- Of course I do!" Jack exclaimed. "Pepper imps good with ya'?" He dug around in the pockets of his Hufflepuff robes for a moment, before pulling out a handful of the spicy candy. The look in the boy's eye had all but sold him! Mischievous, maybe?
"And please call me-"
"Sly, what's the plan here, mate."

It wasn't until Jack cut him off mid-correction that Sylvain finally began to lose his patience with the conceited prefect. Even then, Sylvain considered that it was probably in both of their best interests if he just let this one slide without giving him too much trouble. At least this way he could protest later without causing a big scene. "The candy is for evidence in case someone asks us what we're doing," Sylvain said grumpily as though explaining the obvious was painful. The stuff was kind of warm, and sticky. Like it had been in Warren's pocket for too long. It was gross but then Minerva was the kind of picky eater who liked gross.
"Do you always carry candy without the wrapper in your pocket man?" Syl complained, wiping his hand on his pants. Jack was odd, but Sylvain found that fascinating.
Turns out, being a wizard answered a lot of his own "Why am I the way that I am's?"
"As for the plan," Syl said giving Jack a sideways glance, his look mired with silent disapproval, "you're the one who said we ought to do something fun." He was half tempted to pop a pepper imp into his mouth and spit fire on him right then and there, but caution and common sense told him not to. "Did you have anything in mind when you said that, or were you bored and hoping I had a good idea of fun?" If that was the case, Jack was about to be severely disappointed, because Sylvain's idea of fun was going to bed on time, and reading a good book under the covers with only the light of his wand to keep him company.
Minerva however seemed to have a different idea than either of them. Seeing the gooey piece of candy, and no doubt mistaking it for something more her speed, the Great Horned Owl, in all her angsty majesty, would swoop in on Sylvain's bag before he could get the candy properly secured and put away. "Miner- OW WAIT, MINERVA NO. Don't eat that..." It was too late. His struggle with the bird had ended, and she was busy gulping back what was clearly more fire imps than was safe for a bird her size. Almost immediately afterwards Minerva belched a gout of hellish fire. Steam and smoke pouring from her beak as she flew towards the two of them angrily. Seeing what could only be described as a demand for vengeance in her eyes Sylvain scrambled for the other side of the corridor, nearly climbing Jack in the attempt to escape.
"RUN JACK, RUN!" Neither of them were safe.
