Sylvain seemed a bit sheepish after hearing her praise but Carolyn didn’t care. If he was convinced she could learn to accept a hug without freezing awkwardly, she could teach him how to take a well-deserved compliment. She wasn’t someone to compliment people left and right but she had no problem praising someone, who deserved it. To be fair, Carolyn herself wasn’t all that great at accepting compliments but that was more because she sparsely got them. The Korean part of her family was somewhat stingy with them, though it made their value raise considerably, and her mother who would give them freely wasn’t at home often enough to make her daughter natural at accepting them either. Still, she was raised to believe complimenting people was a good thing if the person in question earned it and so she did exactly that.
"Hmm…I suppose it’s a very peculiar taste. Perhaps it’s one of those things you have to grow to like as you get older?...Like alcohol for example?” She mused looking at her classmates’ mostly forgotten creations. It was clear the green drink wasn’t too popular. “I guess children usually don’t enjoy the bitter taste but I grew up drinking Korean Red Ginseng Extract and that stuff is STRONG.” The witch cringed just remembering the taste. It legitimately made her cry when she first sipped on it but her grandma was merciless. Still, it probably helped her develop a taste for many things other kids weren’t able to appreciate just yet, which seemed like a good thing to her. She liked to taste many different types of food and apparently the disgusting red liquid was extremely healthy so she eventually learned to drink it without arguing.
"Sorry to say I haven't had the chance to, so no." The answer to her question was not that surprising. Korean cuisine was becoming quite well known among muggles but it still wasn’t as popular as Japanese or Chinese food. A lot of the dishes were also pretty spicy, which was not something everybody appreciated. ”I would love to…though it will have to wait until next year. Apparently, second years are not allowed to use the kitchen so I have to make due with some snacks…" She paused for a moment. Which I would share but I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t like them,” she smiled apologetically. “Most Korean snack are a bit weird and I don’t usually buy the ones that aren’t. I can bring some chocolate ones for you to try after summer though. You might like those. Her grandma usually didn’t buy those for Carolyn but her grandma wouldn’t do the shopping now…The raven-haired girl got a bit lost in her own thoughts while remembering the older woman. She would see her soon for which she was grateful but she was also anxious about it. What would she look like, lying in the hospital bed surrounded by people who didn't understand her? Would it make her feel helpless? Hopefully, her father kept his parents company as often as he could.
"Are you a fan of the legends of King Arthur?" Carolyn was promptly brought back to reality by a familiar voice. “Well…I do have a dog at home and her name is Morgana. Does that answer your question?” She said with a smile, obviously excited her friend made the connection. Surprisingly, so far only one other person questioned the name, which she found rather odd. She always thought these stories were amazing and pretty popular. Well at least with the people that had grown up part of the muggle world. She couldn’t be sure about the others. “I assume, you share my sentiment then?” She asked hopefully.

Sylvain hadn't had actual alcohol before. Not even a nip of wine when offered by Rose or Gracie, his foster parents. It was supposed to be a poison according to all the sources he had read after all! His eyebrows would turn inwards with his mouth as his face transformed into somewhat of a frown at the thought of poisoning oneself on purpose, but the expression wouldn't last long at all. Having accidentally poisoned himself the last summer, the look was merely a brief glimpse of his pain as the thought of doing so intentionally seemed like an incredibly dumb thing to do. "I honestly don't understand adults sometimes," he wouldn't have the courage to say aloud, instead thinking it to himself. "Why would anyone regularly enjoy something that slowly kills them?" He would shrug noncommittally at her question of acquired taste.
When she mentioned being unable to use the kitchen, her apology made much more sense of course. Sylvain would close his eyes and bow his head with mutual understanding for her feelings. Practically beaming, the boy would nod quickly with his eyes widened as Carolyn mentioned bringing chocolate however. To date, he had found no better way to emphatically agree with someone else's decision to bring him chocolate. Though it was perhaps her desire to share that mattered most to him. Sharing was caring, and Carolyn cared a lot. It was a singular subconscious craving that had existed ever since his first taste of real magic. Whether gastronomy had something to do with magic or not was still up for debate, but if she had asked him Syl would've told her that nothing beats the magic of a piece of chocolate melting in his mouth. Well, except for perhaps hot chocolate or a double scoop of ice cream.
"Morgana is a good name for a dog," Sylvain would say as he turned to Mordred with more love and affection for the son of a ... "It's a good collection of stories!" Sylvain's smile would relax, the wind would blow, and he would attempt to fix his hair. Though only just enough by combing his hands through it. "Merlin of course is my favorite character," he would start, prepared to geek out on the potential of a historical relative even though he would be disappointed to learn that they weren't related at all, "but I think I prefer the ordeal of Lancelot and Gawain the most." Gawain, with all his humility and compassion, had found the courage to take his revenge on Lancelot despite knowing he would surely meet defeat at the more skilled knight's hands.
In the end, Gawain had found that forgiveness had more potential to heal the wound than his desire for revenge could ever hope for. That was why Sylvain had decided he didn't like fighting. It was easier to forgive and forget than to put the sword to those you loved, and in the end you might regret it anyways. "Those kinds of stories stick with me. I feel like they contain valuable life experience but without the need for us to make the same mistakes." He smile grew thin, lips drawn tight, and closing his eyes before putting one hand on the back of his head nervously. He had the sudden realization that there were mixed opinions for almost every work of art. "Not that I think watery wix's distributing blades is a good basis for governing." He didn't want her to think he believed everything he read.
By now, the sun's warmth would likely begin fading, the clouds peacefully filtered out the majority of the sunrays. Sylvain would flop backwards on the blanket looking up at the clouds, daydreaming again but this time of knights and witches and magical swords. It was only after closing his eyes and taking a deep breath that he would think of how to move the conversation along. Opening his eyes, he could've sworn the cloud above them was none other than The Questing Beast slain by Palamedes, Percival and Galahad, though he decided it was likely just his imagination running a bit wild."Have you read any of the factual historical stuff?" He posed in kind. "I heard that one way you can tell is if Sir Cadogan makes an appearance. Apparently the muggle versions of the story leave him out altogether though I haven't had time to read them myself to confirm."

OOC: It’s been some time since I read any stories or watched films based on Arthurian legends so I had to do a small research :-D Hopefully I didn’t get anything wrong.Sylvain seemed incredibly happy upon her mention of the chocolate treats. Carolyn made a mental note to buy plenty for him next time she went shopping. There were snacks and food that made her feel happy and for her friend this seemed to be anything chocolate. She was already aware of his love for chocolate frogs but today, she learned something new. She would remember that for future reference.
"Morgana is a good name for a dog." Carolyn nodded. She thought it was a good name in general actually. Unique, unlike her own name, which she always found rather ordinary and boring. “Merlin is my favorite too,” she agreed with a smile. “My mother banned the name from my list however, saying she heard plenty of Merlin’s beards and similar expressions to last her a life time. Now that I think about it, she’s got a point. If I named Mordred Merlin I would probably develop a tick in my eye, turning around every time someone cursed.” In theory, it sounded hilarious but she didn’t doubt it would turn out to be quite annoying after a while. “Also, I found Mordred to be more fitting when it came to this little guy. He is nice to you but that’s not a common behavior for him.” She paused then, listening intently to her friend’s thoughts about the Arthurian legends. He seemed quite knowledgeable on the subject. He had also learned some important lessons from said stories, which she could definitely appreciate.
"I might make use of Gawain in the future. I like him too although French people obviously didn't considering how they painted him to be in their stories. Still that's what I enjoy the most about Arthurian legends. There are lessons to be learned but it's also fascinating to see how many different takes there are on the characters in the muggle literature. Morgana and Mordred were considered largely positive characters in some of the earlier works. Morgana was often recognised mostly for her healing abilities in those stories, helping Arthur for most part. Her knowledge of the Dark Arts was nowhere to be found. I named my dog with that one in my mind instead of the actual witch. I didn't have much knowledge about her yet when I got the puppy." Carolyn explained eventually, wanting to share her favorite aspects of the legends as well as indicating that the names for her pets were in fact, selected more carefully than it might seem at first. For some, pets were just that... pets. For this particular witch they were family and spent more time with her than her actual human relations. She always considered everything carefully when it came to them, including finding the perfect name. “And to be fair even when they are painted as villains of the story, they are rather complex characters instead of the boring one-dimensional villains that I never learned to appreciate. I suppose it makes sense since they were based on an actual people. After all, every person is good and bad. We all live with both traits and we are capable of such hatred… we just like to act like that’s not the case.” She understood now, she was also capable of those ugly feelings. Carolyn always assumed herself to be a rather nice human being but her maternal grandmother barged into her life and brought out the worst in her. She didn’t like that side of herself but she couldn’t deny it was part of her. She would be fine though…her parents raised her well…right?
Soon enough the sky started to grow darker and Sylvain opted to lay down making her furry friend jump off his lap and return to his owner instead. "Hello traitor," she teased the cat fondly. How fitting. The witch scratched her furry friend behind the ears, making him purr happily. “Most of the books I have read were muggle written. My father is the one that loves Arthurian legends the most so I just sneaked into his library and went through his entire collection. I think I might have been too young for some of them so I will have to revisit those but from what I remember, there was no mention of Sir Cadogan.” She confirmed Syl’s theory. Then again, she hardly read everything that was written so she could have been wrong. “The muggle British TV series Merlin is my guilty pleasure to be honest. I know it’s no masterpiece and it’s pure fantasy but I liked the idea they had. Exploring Merlin’s journey as a young boy, learning the magic and growing as a person. The way they shown his friendship with Arthur and the knights was also incredible. Very entertaining for a young girl.” Carolyn smiled fondly at the memories. It was a nice way to pass time when she was home alone, waiting for her parents to come back.
