Darcy gingerly held the filthy shovel away from her body. Gross. Why on earth was she doing this? Darcy had never used a shovel, much less pulled weeds, in her entire life. Wasn't that what gardeners were for? But because she was bored, she had made the mistake of wandering outside, where she got roped into this. Touching this filthy shovel and using it and her manicured hands to pull filthy weeds from the filthy dirt. Darcy shuddered and picked her way around laughing students who had no problem with getting their hands dirty, which showed that there was something severely wrong with them. She found an area, full of plants, where no one else was. She surveyed the plants. They looked pretty weed-like to her.
She wrinkled her nose in disgust and, using her forefinger and thumb, carefully pinched a small green plant - clover, maybe? - and pulled lightly. Nothing happened. Darcy frowned and tossed her sleek sheet of brown hair back over her shoulder. Stupid plant. Darcy tugged again. A tiny piece of a leaf came off in her hand. Well. This obviously wasn't going to work. Squeezing her eyes shut, Darcy stuck her finger down under the plant, into the dirt.
"Ew, ew, ew, ew, ew, ew, ew," she chanted under her breath. This could not possibly be her life. She, Darcy Adair, was not the kind of person who stuck her fingers into the dirt. On purpose. After an agonizing ten seconds of having her fingers in the dirt, she managed to push and pull the small weed out of the ground. Darcy stared at it for a moment, dangling from her fingers, before dropping it down to the ground. Her fingers were gross. What was she going to do? She couldn't wipe them on her jeans, that would be even worse. She would just have to let them be, she supposed. Darcy stood, holding her shovel. It might be better to dig. At least then her hands wouldn't be so close to the dirt.
She stuck the pointy part of the shovel into the ground. It was harder than it looked. She put more of her weight on the shovel, trying not to think about how many people had touched the handle before her. The tip of the shovel sank further into the soil. Darcy pulled up and pushed back on the handle, using it like a lever to scoop the dirt from the ground. Some of it fell on her shoes. Darcy dropped the shovel, sending it clattering to the grass, as she inspected the damage. Her right sneaker now was covered in dirt. Darcy groaned and shook her foot, trying to get it off.
"Sh*t!" she yelled, louder than she meant to. She probably looked insane. At least no one was standing near her.

Calypso was happy.
Today was beautiful and sunny, and she had finished all her schoolwork and was going to help with the castle landscaping. What a thought! It was a great idea, really, to have the students help with the grounds. After all, it was they who lived here. And this way they could all help out the nice Groundskeeper, Mr. Céspedes, who usually had to do his job all alone. Hogwarts was huge, and that was quite a lot of ground for one person to cover, even with magic. Cal liked to garden, and she did it often with her father at home. They had carrots and tomatoes, peas, pumpkins and a whole bed of wildflowers. There was something so gratifying about enjoying something that you had grown yourself, right in your own backyard.

The girl was skipping a little, not even caring what a total cliche that was. Let her be twelve. As she was scanning the area for the best place to start, she spotted a posh-looking girl bent over a patch of weeds, grunting and spewing profanity. She looked as if she might need some help. Gripping the trowel she had brought with her from the shed in her glove-clad hand, Cal made her way over. She knelt down in the soft earth next to the stranger, and began to work at some clover, digging her fingers in around the roots and pulling the plants out whole in bunches. Mystery girl gaped at her.

"Hello there!" Cal gave a little wave. "I'm Calypso. Do you mind if I work here, too? You looked like you could use a little assistance."

Darcy stared dumbfounded at the girl, Calypso, who had seemingly just materialized next to her, a happy, helpful little bundle of sunshine. Darcy rolled her eyes, picking up her shovel again. "Sure, be my guest," she said sarcastically, sweeping her hand in a grand arc as if to show off the magnificent masterpiece that was her weeding area. She began digging again, her nose wrinkled in disgust, trying to avoid the dirt as much as possible. Calypso, on the other hand, seemed to have no problem sticking her hands straight into the dirt, and even looked happy while doing it. Of course. She was probably one of those perfect people that everyone loves.
Darcy sighed and gingerly unearthed yet another shovelful of soil, dumping it in her growing pile of dirt and weeds. She truly couldn't understand why people enjoyed doing this. It was hard, dirty, and the shovel hurt her hands. She would probably have blisters later. Darcy set her shovel down for a second and pushed a stray piece of brown hair out of her eyes. It fell right back into her face again. She yanked her ponytail out and wound her hair into a messy bun on top of her head. She picked up her dumb shovel and got back to work. It was quiet for a while as she and Calypso dug.
Darcy finally turned to the other girl, realizing that she hadn't introduced herself yet. She gave Calypso a hard, wry smile and said, "I'm Darcy Adair, in case you were wondering. I'm a Slytherin, of course." She was sure that Calypso wasn't.

"Sure, be my guest." An eye roll. Ahh, so she was one of those. Or she just really hated yardwork. In fact, the sarcastic girl did not seem to be enjoying herself one bit. She was staring at Calypso with disgust as the Gryffindor dug her fingers happily into the dirt, garden gloves laying abandoned at her side. Funny, since this was a completely optional activity. Why would she sign up if she minded a little dirt on her hands? Maybe she needed extra credit. Who knew?

"I'm Darcy Adair," her gardening partner said before Cal could ask. "In case you were wondering. I'm a Slytherin, of course." Calypso had figured as much. Then she mentally chided herself for giving in to House stereotypes. But seriously, everything about this girl
-Darcy- just screamed snake.

"Oh, really? I so couldn't tell. "That's cool! I'm a Gryffindor. Although, I might not seem like one in the traditional sense. I'm super bookish and can be rather quiet. Except, I guess it wouldn't seem like that now." She gave a small, awkward laugh. Where had that word-vomit come from? Cal was the type to listen and try to learn about other people, not randomly offer up a boatload of random facts about herself unsolicited the first time she met someone. "Um... sorry. I don't usually talk this much."

Cal rolled up her jeans and knelt down to take off her shoes. She relished the feeling of cool, slightly damp earth against her bare feet. This earned a strange look from Darcy. "What? The soul of the earth can best be felt through the soles of your feet. It's true, you know."

Cal went back to her weeding, humming softly to herself a tune that had popped into her head a few seconds ago. After a beat of silence, she chanced opening her mouth again, praying that what came out of it wouldn't be anything like the last time. "I feel kind of bad for them, really. The weeds. I mean, we get rid of them because we have for some unknown reason deemed them ugly and unworthy, all the while nurturing other plants that are, in all truth, quite similar to them. Why? I once heard this quote: 'The only difference between a flower and a weed is a judgement.' It just... made me think."
