"Adair? Never heard of any Adairs before. What where you saying about your family earlier?"

She flipped the page of her textbook, searching for something else helpful. Chances were she wouldn't find it- these textbooks were tricky things. Most of the times, she'd discovered, you had to search for the meanings and answers to homework questions and essay prompts by reading between the lines. It wasn't like the textbook was supposed to directly tell you answers to problems- or else what was the point of learning at all?

Looking up to the source of the shriek, Suzuki watched as a blue beetle scuttled over the girl's shoe, and ventured it's way over to the edge of the bank. It looked suspiciously like a milkweed cobalt beetle, known by it's Latin name as Chrysochus cobaltinus- but according to Schmeikl, a close friend, those are only supposed to roam around in Western America and Canada.

Oh, well.

" Just finishing up a Charms essay," Suzuki said, now redirecting her attention to the essay. The more she reread it now, the more poorly written it seemed. Ugh. She didn't feel like rewriting it, but Suzuki knew if she didn't rewrite it now, it'd bug her forever.

She found a new sheaf of parchment and began.

Suzuki had never heard of the Adairs?! What kin of family was she from?! Darcy crossed her arms as Suzuki just started writing again, like nothing had ever happened, like she didn't just flat-out insult Darcy's family, and, by default, Darcy herself.
Darcy took a deep breath, jutting out her leg and planting her hands on her hips. "My family," she said slowly, "are very important people, for your information. Our pure-blood bloodline goes back for centuries. My parents are extremely influential and quite involved with this school, as a matter of fact." And you're practically invisible to them, a tiny voice in the back of her head whispered. Darcy banished the voice. Her parents cared about her. Of course they did. They were just . . . busy, that's all. Still, that little flicker of sadness that bloomed in her chest whenever Darcy thought about this kind of thing was beginning to appear.
She bit her lip. Stop being a baby, she told herself. What would your parents say? Darcy straightened her back and stared at Suzuki, bent over her essay. "So," she continued, "what's your blood status, anyway?" she asked. For some reason, people always got annoyed when she asked that question. But that was their problem, not hers. It was a perfectly normal thing to ask.

"Don't you underestimate me, 'cause I know that I won't go speechless."

Yep. Never heard of the Adairs. After she'd been introduced to Muggle sports, Suzuki pretty much didn't care about Wizarding news anymore. Well fine, there was all that stuff about the Potters, the most famous family every-

Football was better.

A pure-blood, huh? This girl reminded Suzuki slightly of Murtaja, some fancy rich kid from somewhere in Europe. Slytherins were probably all pure-blooded, give or take a few.

Extremely influential. That sounded like something Suzuki's mother had told her before. About Ministry work, and how she had to be away all the freaking time. It was as if her mother had to be away for just one stupid minute, the Earth would spiral out of orbit, run into the sun, and everything would be destroyed.

It was stupid. It, being the Ministry.

And her mother. Yes, that.

It was as if the Ministry kept some camera- okay maybe not, something like a camera but more magical on her mother, something that pulled the woman away to work whenever Suzuki started to talk or ask something.

Then the girl asked about her blood status. It didn't really matter to Suzuki whether she was a pure-blooded, half-blooded, or didn't have any blood at all, but apparently it did matter to Slytherins.

" Still never heard of them. That means they're busy all the time, right? I get that. My mother's never home- she doesn't like me much, either. Doesn't matter how important your parents are though, at least to me. You're not them- you choose your own paths. I'm most likely a half-blood. At least a half-blood. What's left of my family is from Japan, in case that really matters to you."

She turned back to her unfinished essay, not daring to reread it. It'd probably just get worse by the minute.
