Mischief and Freedom Pet

Said in Parseltongue
Colette met Calypso when she was in America, a few weeks before she was set to return home. She’d gone home once for her father’s funeral, and then came back, but now she would be there for good.

They usually say that a Parsel’s companion usually finds them, but in this case, Colette found Calypso. And when she found Calypso, the snake was fully grown, incredibly bored, and was being kept in a tank as if she were a common pet snake. The Emerald Gazer had been imported across the sea and was made into an exotic pet by a posh, snobby, wizard who liked to pretend he was a Parselmouth.

Colette had been invited to a party hosted by said snobby wizard, through some acquaintances she’d made. Normally Colette did not frequent the higher class wizarding circle, but she was all too interested to meet another “Parselmouth”. Truthfully, Colette was slightly envious. While she always had snake friends to talk to, she’d never been allowed one. The thought of acquiring her own crossed her mind occasionally, but she’d yet to act on it.

Unfortunately, she was greatly disappointed as soon as he showed off how he could “talk” to snakes. So much so that the witch was so tempted to call bull right in the middle of his attempt to make her return her small cave, and chalking it up to the snake “wanting to see the people” when it did not obey. He’d apparently bought the Gazer to impress people, and had given her the name, but apparently, as soon as he realized he could not tame her he kept her in her gilded cage – err tank.

It was a half-truth, because while the snake truly did not listen to him, and he truly was no silver-tongued snake charmer, the snake did want to see the people. Or more specifically, Colette. For the witch on the other side of the room, it took her a while before she realized the snake was looking at her, and not just in her direction. She could only imagine how they looked as Calypso imitated the tilt of her head, not once breaking eye contact. Not that a snake without eyelids could, anyway. Instead, it was Colette who broke it, after being directed to another room.

Calypso’s eyes followed her until she couldn’t see her anymore.

Later that night, when the party was in full swing, Colette snuck into the room where Calypso was.

““Hello.” She whispered to the lounging reptile.

The serpent curiously approached her, mostly unaffected by the fact that she’d spoken to her.

“Finally, someone who actually knows what they’re doing. Quick, let me out before he comes back.”

Colette was not often baffled, but this was one of those moments where she thought she’d overdone it the firewhiskey. Her eyes blinked multiple times and she moved closer, thinking she’d misheard.

“Excuse me?”

“You heard me, you and I know I shouldn’t have to be subject to that imbecile’s stunts just so attract females.”

“And of all people you ask me to let you out?”

“You’re the only one I could ever ask! Most wizards don’t exactly speak snake. Besides, you sound like the humans where I’m from. That means you can take me home, can’t you?” Colette cocked an eyebrow at that. Colette had never met a snake with so much sass before. Needless to say, she was intrigued by then, but not enough to want to break the serpent out and bring it all the way to Cotswold with her.

“Please, I hate it here. This tank is much too small, and the food is terrible.” Calypso was begging now, but Colette was still unconvinced. “No,” She insisted. “I am not taking you out of here, and I’m sure as hell not taking you with me.” In her exasperation, she’d exposed her plans to the reptile, and her eyes widened when she realized her mistake.
“I knew it! I knew you could take me home! I beg of you, please, you probably don’t know what’s like to be trapped, but it’s terrible. Please.” Oh, but she did. She knew all too well. Colette sighed. How was she to say no after it played the freedom card? With a shake of her head, and her conscience trying to tell her this was a bad idea, she put her hands up in exasperation.

“Dammit. Okay, fine. But we do this my way, we have to do it tonight. And you’ll have to trust me.”

If Colette did not think it was fate then, she certainly thought it was looking back. Calypso’s first owner had been incredibly gullible, easily believing her ruse of being a magizoologist who was “concerned about the snake". It didn’t take long either. In the 15 minutes after he’d discovered Calypso playing dead, and Colette “declaring” her dead for him the snake over to her to avoid any “accusations of neglect by the ministry”, Colette and Calypso were out of there faster than you could say “con artist.”

When they’d arrived in Cotswold and Colette freed Calypso, they couldn’t bear to part with each other. By then, they’d bonded with each other, and had no intention of ever leaving the other again. They’ve been inseparable ever since.
