Homework was possibly the least interesting thing she could have possibly said, and by her expression he had reason to believe she was fully aware of this. But still, it was not nothing. Sure he had known it beforehand, but it was still something. Perhaps it was his needless optimism that only seemed to show up to torment him or other people, but he thought he might have a chance of at least getting other information.

He let her talk, after all it could at least get him somewhere. He had never really heard about other dorms. He could only allow his imagination to take him there. Perhaps Gryffindors had living lions in their dorms, or maybe Slytherins had consistent music to keep them asleep like the room itself was a snake charmer.

There had been quite a few thoughts he had assumed about dorms, but not once did he consider a star themed one. With a bit of process of elimination in his head, this at least narrowed it down to the fact she was a Ravenclaw. She seemed to speak so fondly of her dorm, yet she clearly thought the candy train was superior. To be fair, Ross did not think he could survive a night in her dorm. After all, he had a bit of a needless fear of the dark.

"You seem pretty proud to be a Ravenclaw." he remarked, hoping that he could follow his own train of thought instead of falling off-topic in his mind once more. "I met a boy who HATED bein' a Hufflepuff the other day. Despised the dorm rooms too. Suppose it's on him for not goin' for the one with the candy train though." he mentioned.

Now, what kind of question could he ask a girl who was proud of being a Ravenclaw who was just doing her homework during lunch? It seemed she fit the typical trope of a Ravenclaw- avoiding their own physical needs because of a lust for knowledge. At this point he was wondering if this challenge was even possible simply because of the two question rule.

"How 'bout I ask you two questions and you get to choose which one to answer?" he proposed, checking her facial expressions before jumping right into it. "Does doing your homework during lunch make you happy? or... what class is your homework for?" he inquired, hoping she would play along.

As she inquired about the article, he shrugged. It was really difficult to remember at this point. He had the attention span for detective novels and that was it. "Nothin' of too much importance." he settled on.

"I am," Dee confirmed easily. It was true, what was the use in denying it? "I thought I'd be a Slytherin like my father, but the Hat decided I'd be better for Ravenclaw, and by now I wouldn't have it any other way." A smile tugged on her lips, slightly impish, definitely amused. "Too many idiots in Slytherin. Plus they're so dramatic, you know?" Which was why, honestly, she would have fit right in, not above throwing a tantrum or playing out theatrics whenever it suited her. But then, too many drama queens in one place couldn't peacefully coexist.

"There are plenty people unhappy with their House, at least in the beginning," she nodded. "I think most come to terms with it at some point, though. Must be exhausting otherwise." Dee had, fully and without reservations. Ileen had, too, to some degree.

When the boy changed the rules of the game suddenly, Dee's eyebrow quirked up in amusement, but she didn't protest. She had set them rather arbitrarily, and didn't really care either way. She would have given him more questions, too, if he'd made a halfway convincing case for it, but sure, this worked, too. At this point, she wasn't sure how well he was paying attention, however, considering she was pretty sure she had mentioned Transfiguration earlier in their conversation.

"No, it doesn't make me happy," she replied, rolling her eyes. Might as well give him new information, in case he remembered the Transfiguration tidbit after all. "I'm hungry. For food, not sweets," she specified, remembering the stash of candy in his pockets. "What do you take me for, some kind of nerd cliché?" Honestly, not too far off, considering how obsessed she was with her grades, but she wasn't doing it for fun. At least not in Transfiguration. And she would decisively object to being called a nerd.

Then she tilted her head to one side, curious. What was he going to do with this information? Was he going to venture a guess now, or would he change the rules of the game again? This was his opportunity to impress - or lose her interest and finally free her to return to her essay.

Apologies for the delay, this thread kind of slipped my mind x_x

Ross could not help but agree that Slytherins were dramatic. Without fail, every single Slytherin that he had met had some level of insanity to them. The first Slytherin he had ever met had actually attempted to blackmail him for his journal. Another Slytherin, Toffee, bothered to force him to work for his candy. Most recent of which, Ross had gotten to know Piper. Piper had forced him to fight for custody with snowballs over their son, Lil' Layton. Ross had noticed how dramatic Slytherins tended to be, but he had never considered it to be a trope of them as a whole.

"You can say that again! First Slytherin I ever met blackmailed me with my journal." he remarked before uncomfortably pausing.

Was that not what she had just attempted to do? He bit his cheek. His self-awareness was completely gone. He felt the need to clench his journal tighter. He refused to let anyone get a hold of his journal again, but knowing himself it would absolutely end up in the wrong hands again. He could not risk this girl attempting to snatch his precious book again.

"Another one fought me 'bout how my trombone sounded." he decided to attempt to recover. Maybe she did not notice the fact he accidentally called her dramatic if he just talked a lot. Yes, that made perfect sense!

She was entirely correct about people originally disliking their houses though. Ross had met quite a few people who had a distaste for the house they were originally presented with. In fact, if he had a sickle for each person who had a distaste for their house who he had talked with he would likely have enough money to be comfortable with buying a rat.

"I dunno, certainly hope so. Or else there'd be a lotta grumpy people 'round here." he piggybacked off her despite the fact he had met multiple people who were not fond of their houses in their second year. Perhaps it was just a thing people had to adjust to.

Just as he thought he was getting on her good side, she managed to throw him off again. The girl spoke in pure sarcasm, which Ross could easily play along with.

"Well, yeah, sorta." he responded to her question. "So, are ya studyin' for a test or..." he inquired, basically giving up on the rules of the game at this point and hoping she would not notice.

Dee, personally, took the comment in stride. It didn't really occur to her that it might just as well apply to her, after all, she hadn't attempted to blackmail him, in her eyes. It had been a game, a test of sorts, just to see how he would react, what he would offer. She would have given it back, anyway, had exchanged it for a piece of candy, after all. That hardly counted as blackmail at all.

She did, however, notice him holding onto his journal like he was afraid someone would snatch it away any second, and her eyebrow rose with some amusement. She'd had it before, and she'd returned it, he had nothing to fear from her. "Don't worry, I'm not going to tackle you and wrestle it from you," she teased, a glint in her eye. "It didn't really seem very interesting, anyway. No offense."

The next tidbit sounded mildly more entertaining. He hadn't been teased for playing trombone, but fought over how it had sounded? Honestly, this guy seemed like he had a lot of funny stories to tell, except that he downplayed them like nothing had happened at all, and then shut down whenever she made further inquires, only leaving her with questions about whatever offhand remark he'd made.

"There are still a lot of grumpy people around here," she replied, grinning, lighting up with genuine, friendly amusement for the first time. It changed the expression in her eyes, softened her edges a little, dropped the calculating front she'd been carrying. "Seriously, with some people, you'd think that every smile costs them something. Or physically hurts them. Maybe they're lacking the muscles they need?"

Yeah, sorta. Well, wasn't he a charmer. She snorted, but didn't take offense, only rolling her eyes slightly. "You could have at least tried to make a more interesting guess," she said, sounding slightly petulant. "This is no fun, you make me sound so boring." Leaning back slightly, she took a glance back to where her things were still waiting at a different table, abandoned and ignored.

"I'm working on the Transfiguration essay that's due tomorrow," she replied finally, sighing. "I was supposed to do that yesterday, but got, uh, caught up in something else. Will probably still have to sacrifice sleep tonight, especially since I'm now talking to you instead of making progress." Her mood darkened a little at the prospect. Writing Transfiguration essays was not her idea of a good Tuesday night.

Ross felt relieved that she found the journal boring. While he was convinced it was full of awestriking stories, he supposed with a quick skim there was no way she could have known. Of course, it was either that or it was legitimately uninteresting; however, Ross would never accept that thought. He found every word he wrote in his journal absolutely and completely fascinating. Every word contributed something. Of course, he would never know for sure considering the only times he was to reread pages in his journal was when he felt that he had forgotten something or had gotten terribly bored.

"My journal is interestin', you just haven't seen the good stuff." he remarked mildly defensively; however, there was a lighthearted tone in his voice that made it abundantly clear he was not taking it entirely seriously. The only thing he was taking seriously was his journal's safety, as despite the girl's words he continued cradling the book in his arms as if it was the most fragile thing in the universe.

Despite his defensive mannerisms, he still seemed to get along with her happily when he was given the chance. Her last remark was something he had to absolutely agree with. In fact, 9/10 times if he was bothering someone it was likely because they were not smiling. People felt it made them blend into the crowd, but it truly just made Ross want to get in and dissect their brain.

"I dunno. At my hometown, everyone was real nice. If they were a bit grumpy they still had fun hurtin' others. I dunno what's up with everyone here. Probably somethin' to do with how difficult it is to navigate the place or wizard genes or somethin' else." he explained his pathetic excuse for a theory.

Still, despite the polite small talk in between that he found himself getting far too invested in, the guesses still kept coming. The tone of the situation kept being hit back and forth like a tennis match, but he personally felt as if there was absolutely not winning.

"I dunno, you've only givin' me boring hints. I betcha you're more than that, but I dunno." he attempted to resolve her complaint.

He paused as she explained. Wow, that really was boring, wasn't it? Well, he supposed it made her more interesting than most. Most students would likely put off the work in his opinion. It gave her character in his opinion. If he had just known that from the start maybe he would know quite a bit more about her. He remained quiet for a few moments after his question was answered.

"Well... Remember, the names Ross Stephens. Owl me 'bout how it goes tomorrow and I'll leave ya be so that letter is a good one."

And so Ross pushed himself up and wobbled out the door.

What a mess.

The teasing glint in Dee's eyes brightened, as did the grin on her face. "What, are you trying to convince me to take it again?" she mocked gently, but made clear she was only poking fun at him by relaxing and leaning back. "I wish you weren't so secretive about all your supposedly interesting discoveries," she complained lightly.

The atmosphere had relaxed into gentle banter, slipping from teasing into lamenting about how everyone here seemed to be so serious, and Dee grinned at the idea that it had somehow to do with wizard genes, or that everyone was just perpetually grumpy because they got lost around Hogwarts all the time. "Interesting theory," she proclaimed, pointing at him. Interesting it was, if unlikely. "That sounds like it would warrant closer studies. I'll start observing test subjects."

At the boy's complaint that she was only giving him boring hints to work with, Dee paused for a moment, thinking back. He had a point, she decided. While she'd been internally complaining that he kept all the interesting tidbits to himself, she'd been doing the same to him. Although in her case, she'd been trying to force him to get creative, or outsmart her. It hadn't quite gone like that, but she supposed she could cut him some slack. "I am much more than that," she promised him. She didn't think she'd ever been described as boring before.

The conversation was petering out, and Dee didn't mind when the boy decided to leave. Ross Stephens, huh. "Dee Prince," she called after him. "Was interesting meeting you, Ross!"

Well then. Transfiguration awaited.
