Adonis shrugged, watching the girl. part of her wanted to ignore the tone of the girl's voice. The look in Iris' eyes when she touched the scarf. She looked... so sad. Adonis didn't know why - but her brother held that expression when he tried, and always failed, to do magic. So something not good, She let out the air in her lungs.
"There's bad because there is good." Adonis spoke, trying to find her own words, but instead defaulted to quoting someone else. "Everything's got a dark side - doesn't mean we should be ashamed of it. Like with Cattle."
"It's really something special when you raise them. bath 'em as babes, name 'em, praise and feed and clean 'em up for pageants," she felt herself smiling, "But," she shrugged, "No amount of love will change that, at the end of the day, they are meat. Wither to humans or flys. They all go."
She remembered when she'd learned about what really happens to cows. She'd been nine. There was an accident with her favorite heifer, or well, she supposed cow. Mother and Father said their was an incident, and they needed her help. Something about using magic, or about her being small. Either way, Adonis had not eaten meat for a year after the fact.
Part of her wanted to tell the other girl this - another part of her hated the fact that she even remembered.
She settled on changing the subject.
"Sounds like potions class is going to be intense, then." She kept her tone light, as if she was telling a joke. "Please tell me there's a secret exam where if I just, I dunno, tell the professor my very best potions joke I can pass."

((in case: heifer is a female cow that hasn't had any off spring.

Winter continued watching the two as they spoke getting more and more anxious as time passed... "they probably think I'm weird...watching them.." she spoke silently to herself as she nestled her head into her knees. Letting out a sigh she began thinking about home. She missed the one part of her heart out of everything she never wished to leave behind...her dog Xena. When she had nobody else to talk to she would lay around and cuddle with Xena, telling her every little secret she had. For that dog was the only one she truly trusted. Picking her head up to look around the courtyard again she thought of how she had not known anyone here yet, except that boy from the common room. She scanned the courtyard a few more times before once again looking at the two girls. What was stopping her from going over there? Was it the fact she was too nervous? Did she think they wouldn't like her? Or was she scared...? Scared to go over there because of the bullies she had already met in the hallway on the way to this spot. She felt safe under this tree, along with a quick escape route right by her side. "Should I just go over...? What would I say???" she muttered to herself, gently clenching her hair in frustration. She shakes her head as if to clear the thoughts from her head, taking a deep breath in and letting it out slowly. "calm down winter..just go over and if they don't like you it's not a big deal there are many other students here.... Getting up she put her headphones around her neck and dusted off her pants. Letting out another quick sigh she says to herself "here goes nothing.." She began walking over. Soon enough she stops a few feet away from them. She choked on her words a bit still quite nervous "h-hello...I hope I'm not bothering you but I was w-wondering if maybe you would want to talk a bit...I don't know m-many people from this school.."

(i am so sorry for not posting I've been very caught up in school lately..but I should be online more during the summer. Very good job with your posts though they are very inspiring for me to use a larger vocabulary. 😁)

Iris smiled a bit, wondering if Adonis was joking. Though with the amount of people who came to her father for potions she found her thoughts slowly changing. Before she thought they simply came because they didn't have the time to brew their own. Now, though, she supposed everyone must have different strengths, and thus would lack in some fields. She was about to reply when Winter had approached them. It seemed this was the pair of eyes that had been watching.

Iris's green eyes quickly scanned the girl and she started to smile in a welcoming manner. This was not someone who seemed to have bad intent when they had been watching, and the sound of her voice, the way it quivered slightly when she asked to join. Iris found it familiar, it's how she acted when she had the protective shadow of her father when she was unsure of a new situation. "Of course you can join." Iris replied lightly, swinging her arm in a dramatic motion towards Adonis as if to usher Winter into their circle. "We were just sharing bits about where we're from. I'm Iris Zarus, my father brews Potions for a living. And this is..." She motioned for Adonis to introduce herself, wishing not to get the information wrong. She knew it was raising cattle, but would Adonis be wanting to share that information to this newcomer?

Potions are like people, they have different stages and develop differently. You just don't know when they are at their finished product.
