This is a detention thread, closed to anyone besides @Flash Holmwood and @Dmitri Jones
The date was Saturday, May first. On the previous Sunday, April twenty-fifth, a most irregular interruption had taken place during a duelling competition. When Dmitri Jones' opponents forfeited their intended match, he flew into a rage, brandishing his wand and challenging spectators. Flash Holmwood had attempted to diffuse and disarm him, only to invoke the fourth-year's ire, who proceeded to set ablaze, heal, and then petrify him. Lamik Fillestar had come to Flash's aid, levitating Dmitri off of the ground, which was when Henry Knight- for reasons only speculated- had tried and missed Flipendoing Lamik. A Ravenclaw prefect, Pericles Dralt, had the "pleasure" of issuing all of them detentions for disrupting the match. With defiance and shoddy excuses, Dmitri and Henry tried to deny detention, which in turn doubled their punishment. But what could that possibly mean?

Pericles wasn't "into" the more humiliating methods of discipline. Like most children, he had been raised with repercussions for misbehavior, but his parents would have considered it classless to make him do something demeaning. They were a guiding couple whose corrections were designed to have him reflect on his actions, as well as their consequences. It was also important that they be exceedingly boring to further stifle any desire to come back for more. The Ravenclaw prefect had one week to brew something before owling all detentionees.

The four were split into pairs and invited at different hours.
Flash was to write an article detailing methods of diffusing a situation that did not involve magic or brute force. What else could he have said or done to navigate the situation? (It was hinted that ignoring angry braggadocios was a good way to avoid feeding their antics.)
Dmitri was to write about what could have caused him to lose his temper. It was specified that he could not blame Gryffindor, its duellists, or anyone besides himself, and should instead explain the reason for his ditching of decorum. As the second half of his detention, he would write an apology to Flash, the genuineness of which Pericles would determine himself.
To complete this detention:
  • Flash: Write a minimum of 200 words
  • Dmitri: Write a minimum of 400 words
  • Complete the assignment as described; being difficult IC is always okay, but until the expectation is met, you'll have more to write! I'll tag you to confirm you're done.

While he couldn't strictly say this didn't work as a general punishment, this was not the outcome Flash had been hoping for. If he had been given some kind of physical menial task, alone, he could knock in out and be done with it. That had been Miss Meenauh's great mistake during his previous detention, he could focus on doing a good job of cleaning and feel proud of himself afterwards for what he had accomplished. Writing an essay about conflict resolution... while sitting in the same room as Dmitri... felt quite patronizing. Maybe that was the point.
[font=Monotype Corsiva]While spectating a dueling match, one should not drawn their own wand unless it is an emergency. Since my life was not being threatened
After all, what exactly was he supposed to say that he should have done differently? Kept his mouth shut maybe, or not panicked when threatened? What lesson was there to learn there, leave people to hurt themselves? Get over his trauma? Well, that wasn't really fair, no one could honestly say they knew why Flash had reacted so badly and so quickly. At the very least, he had the excuse that he was trying to stop Dmitri from attacking, but if anyone knew better, it would be Dmitri himself. Maybe he didn't know why, but he saw the real terror in Flash's eyes. Maybe he was conceited enough to think it was his power alone that caused it. At least then Flash's secret would still be safe.
[font=Monotype Corsiva]Since my life was not being threatened, I should have either tried to talk him down calmly, or waited for someone of greater authority to handle the situation properly.
Waving his quill in the air idly, rumination winning out over proper wording, Flash continually stole glances over at Dmitri. Certainly this punishment would not be dramatically changing him, his spiel after being caught was proof enough that he felt completely justified. He had to be delusional. He was clearly fishing for a fight, and wanted to show off, nothing more. He was lying to himself if he saw it differently, and frankly, it kind of pissed Flash off. In the moment, it was like torture, and he was getting sick and tired of paying for other people's problems.

"Dmitri." Flash spoke up, leaning forward in his chair as if trying to look over his shoulder at what he was writing. "Be sure to add that you were out of your mind when you attacked me, and that I deserve better."

Petty, sure, but part of him just wanted Dmitri to feel bad, no matter why. They didn't actually have a friendship, hardly even knew each other, but there was an unearned familiarity. Like cousins that saw each other at every family reunion but didn't know anything about one another. Maybe he was a little too happy about the dynamic shift being turned back into his favor again.

@Flash Homewood - your detention is complete!
  • The alternatives would be considered sufficient; Pericles evidently wasn't keen on giving Flash an excess of work. The paper would be returned to him, to dispose of as he pleased.
  • You can continue the scene if you like, but it isn't obligatory.

Even as he entered the barely-populated classroom in which he'd serve his detention, Dmitri was still adamant that he had not done a single thing wrong. It was evident in the way he held his head high, looking down his nose at the current occupants in the room. Tucked under his arm were several textbooks and loose pieces of parchment.

The older Slytherin, to this day, was still confused about what possessed the prefect to think it was a clever idea to put—arguably—the biggest nerd of the school with nothing but time in his hands in a place far away from noise and distraction.

To write.

Being in a silent classroom with nary a noise did not sound very much like a punishment—especially after getting banned from the Hogwarts library for cursing a Hufflepuff with the slug vomits.

In fact, it sounded a lot like Dmitri's idea of a good time.

Treating the requirements of the detention similar to any old homework surely did make things proceed more smoothly—and helped him mentally distance himself from the inexplicably-irritating presence (read: Flash Holmwood) looming in his periphery.

Despite any form of provocation, I, Dmitri Kazimir Jones, should have exercised the restraint and dignity expected of a Senior Student and a Dueling Captain. In a position of superiority and seniority, I realize that a display of care and compassion in the first place would have avoided the spectacle that occurred.

The words came easy, as they always did when Dmitri was in his zone. His impeccable control not only manifests in his spellwork but in his own discipline when it comes to schoolwork, as well.

Didn't necessarily follow that he meant what he wrote, however.

I acknowledge that my momentary inability to control myself led to injuring a bystander, Flash Holmwood, and will strive hard to do better in the future.

Dmitri couldn't actually pinpoint why he despised the boy so much.

It's like the mere sight of the boy's dark hair and judging eyes made his blood boil. They've only ever interacted properly once and most of the details of that interaction blended into a blur of broom rides, underaged drinking, and... envy?

Surely that wasn't right.

He was Dmitri Kazimir Jones, for goodness' sake, possibly the most-gifted wizard of his year. He had nothing to be envious about—especially not from a child.

"Dmitri. Be sure to add that you were out of your mind when you attacked me, and that I deserve better.

His concentration momentarily broken, Dmitri's nostrils flared in irritation.

The older Slytherin spoke out loud, moving his quill over the parchment as if he was writing his words down, "It certainly wasn't right for me to attack a helpless bystander, especially when they are simply unable to fight back." Pointedly haranguing the boy's incompetence, he added: "As a Dueling Captain, I should have been able to tell when someone is not a match for me, and for that, I am deeply regretful."

Turning to the other boy with the fakest smile he could ever muster, Dmitri remarked, "Does that suffice, young master?"

Dmitri didn't make any sudden moves of retaliation, not turning around at all. Flash wouldn't even get the slight satisfaction at seeing his frustration, as he instead started talking as if to orate the words he wrote. At first, Flash almost found it funny. For a brief moment, he thought the fact that the two of them were alone again was revealing the side of him that Flash had seen before. Playful, even charming. Instead, the words had a cutting bent. Really, it was only fair, given that Flash had called him mad. Then again, he had to be at least a little mad to do what he did.

Flash's cocky smile would fade, a hollow feeling filling the heat in his chest that had once been indignant anger. The feeling left a painful stinging, scratchy with unfilled breaths, like a sore throat. He really had been helpless. He had been working hard to improve his spellcasting, obsessively practicing pronunciation and wand movements, but whenever he needed it most, his hands would shake. He'd panic. Whether Dmitri meant it as a cruel joke or not, he was right. He was not a threat to anyone, Flash was a sacrificial lamb.

To the re-utterance of the title that Flash specifically asked him to avoid, he'd let out an audible scoff, falling back into his chair briefly before getting up to grab his things. He'd snatch them up violently, his frustration manifesting as a quiet tantrum. "Ugh-- whatever." Pausing beside him momentarily before heading to the door, Flash would shoot Dmitri an ugly glare that contained his distaste, whether he looked up to see it or not. "If you ever want to apologize, you know where to find me."
