Aldor was late, again, he spent too much time on the library today, but he wasn't too worried about sitting with his classmates, usually they weren't excited about being close to 'That Weird Kid from the Library'. By the time he arrived the Great Hall, most of the students were already sat down and speaking whatever they had in mind, gossip, venting about situations in their life in Hogwarts, some others were busy trying to figure out what they were supposed to do with the homework that was assigned to them, Aldor could hear everything, which was the worst part of this giant place.
Sometimes his great hearing capability was a curse, he couldn't sit down and eat peacefully without having to stand all the noise around, the people talking, the sound of new letters being opened, the chewing of the people nearby, it was all too much for him, it wasn't like he had the intetion to be nosy and listen to others talk, but he was unable to block out the noise and focus with what he was doing.
Maybe that's the reason as to why he enjoyed the library so much, and why he was there almost every day, the only noises were the sound of pages being turned gently, and whispers of people who couldn't just sit and read silently.
Aldor stood near the entrance, scanning the room as he tried to find a place too sit, without having to go up to someone directly and ask them if he could sit with them, he didn't have the guts to do so, not yet. So he simply waited, he was just that kid from Hufflepuff who had no clue of how to interact with others, despite the fact that he's been able to make a few friends along this first year.

Cosmo was happy, despite feeling a little lonely. For what felt like the whole year she had been sitting next to new people at dinner time, trying to involve herself and socialise. It wasn't that she didn't like them, or that they found her annoying, she just didn't seem to be able to make a lasting impression on anyone. Whenever mulling the dilemma over Cosmo attributed this to never having had a friend before starting at Hogwarts. For someone else it could have become an exhausting mission, but Cosmo was ever the optimist, and simply reassured herself that when the time was right she would make a real friend.
Tonight Cosmo had already drifted into her own thoughts and away from the conversation around her. She realised with a start that her gaze resting on a skinny kid with ginger hair who was standing in the entrance hall. He captured Cosmo's attention, as she realised that he looked just as lost as she felt. She watched as he scanned the hall looking for somewhere to sit, and just as he was about to turn away she leapt up on an impulse, running over to him.
"Hey! Do you wanna sit with me? There's a space next to me on the bench," Cosmo was smiling a big friendly grin, and she gestured vaguely behind herself at the Gryffindor table.

Aldor's big green eyes widened at the surprise of someone talking to him that suddenly, it wasn't like this was the first time Aldor spoke with someone, but the circumstances made it a bit strange, considering she's never seen him before and the fact that if she knew who he was, she was most likely going to remain as far as she could from him.
Aldor was surprised, but a few of the nosy kids at Hufflepuff simply stared at the weird kid from First Year walking up to Gryffindor's table, what was he even thinking?
Was this a prank? Maybe someone told her to do it. He wasn't sure, but he was definetely not going to sit there in the entrance while everyone else was already in their corresponding benches, for once, Aldor decided to step up and ignore his fears for a bit, he wasn't gonna let his nerves ruin a possible friendship.
He slowly walked up to the girl, he was a little hesitant, but this far into the action would deny him the oportunity to go back to his safe zone, she seemed rather friendly, extremely energetic. Sometimes Aldor struggled to get used to people's strange personalities and actions. Then again, he wasn't exactly great at anything, and the dark and mysterious air that surrounded him was nothing more than a mask to hide away the fact that he was terribly shy and anxious about social interaction.

Aldor paused, as he played with a strand of his hair, doing his best to calm his nerves.

Calling out had been an impulse on Cosmo's part, and now that she took more than just a few seconds to read Aldor's body language she realised that this boy wasn't only feeling lost, he was feeling scared. She could recognise all the same signs from when she rescued wild animals back home. They would shrink in on themselves and try to be as invisible as possible, just like Aldor was now. Cosmo took in the surprise and hesitancy on his face, and resolved to make him feel as safe as possible.
As soon as Aldor came close enough Cosmo positioned herself between him and the Hufflepuff table, which he kept glancing over at. At first Cosmo thought he might be wanting to sit at his own table, and couldn't find a way to say so, but then she noticed the few other kids giving him weird looks. When an animal was injured and getting distracted by lights or noises around it the best thing to do is give it a dark quiet place, usually with a blanket. Cosmo didn't have a blanket, and the idea of throwing one over this boy she didn't even know yet made her laugh. So instead Cosmo decided to use her body to block out anyone else, and bring the attention to her voice, which she softened and her smile, which she made more gentle.
"I did call you, it kind of looked like you were searching for somewhere to sit..." Cosmo looked down, "and I was kind of lonely." It wasn't easy to admit it, but Cosmo knew that to gain someone's trust you first had to be vulnerable. And besides, this boy looked trustworthy, despite his anxiety. She looked back up, with a fresh smile.
"My name's Cosmo Keith, it's really good to meet you,"She flopped back down onto the Gryffindor bench, returning to her meal and gesturing for Aldor to do the same.
"I think I've seen you in the Library a few times, is that why you were late today?"

Aldor shook his head softly, focusing on Cosmo as he sat down. He slowly looked back at her, smiling nervously, it seemed like his face was a little red, maybe he was embarassed.
''Cosmo? That is a really nice name.''
He was stuttering quite a lot, having a hard time to control his nerves, the more the girl talked to him, made him feel a little bit safer, she seemed to be kind, Aldor wasn't fully sure just yet, but he wanted to believe.
''Yeah- I was a little too much into my books, didn't notice the time at all, until I realized everyone was gone-''
The boy was starting to realize that Cosmo was a bit too good at reading his body language, normally, people felt safer with friends that could understand them without using words, but Aldor didn't think this way, he did not like being like open book for others, if he told someone his thoughts, he would be comfortable with that person having that knowledge of him, but this girl was able to see every single one of his insecurities perfectly.
Then again, Aldor wasn't good at hiding what he felt, maybe it was all part of this weakness. Of course, there were things that she didn't know about him yet, things that not even his best friends knew at this point, maybe if Cosmo spent enough time with Aldor she would be able to get some of this information from him.

"Aw, thank you!" Cosmo replied to the compliment, grinning, "I really like the name Aldor, I don't think I've ever heard it before... does it have any kind of meaning behind it?" She always liked to know where people's name's came from, having quite an unusual name herself.
Cosmo couldn't tell whether her strategies were working, Aldor still seemed to be flushed, and his words couldn't come out right but maybe that was just a constant for him. It worried Cosmo, but for now all she could do was keep talking to him and hope to distract him from any anxiety he had.
"I must say I wish I had the kind of attention span that books require, I love when people talk to me about them though! It's always so much easier to focus on people talking about a book rather than actually reading one," Cosmo smiled ruefully. Back at home she learned all her lessons from her mother, having been homeschool, and they found a good technique where all of Cosmo's classes were verbal. Now that her homework included reading she was struggling, and eventually the best technique she had found was to sit in a quiet place and read aloud. Perhaps if Aldor liked reading enough to forget about dinner, he would want to talk about them.
"You should tell me about your favourite book, or maybe what you were reading today?" She quickly realised that this sounded like a demand, and hastened to add on, "only if you want to though!"

''Well- originally it is supposed to mean 'the rock that is as strong as Thor' or the other way around 'Thor, strong as rock', even though- Aldor was my grandfather's name, so my parents decided to give me the last name in his honor. I am- not really what you would describe as strong.''

Soon after, she asked him to tell her what his favorite book was, he managed to regain his composture, but for that, he had to look away and clear his throat, he wasn't sure if he was making Cosmo feel uncomfortable, and this made him worry even more than he already was.
Up to that point, his nerves didn't allow him to have a proper conversation with the girl, but at least he was able to look into her eyes once. It was strange, at first glance she did not have any sort of feature that was specially impressive or uncommon, but Aldor couldn't help but look into her eyes every so often, he didn't know what it was about her, maybe the energy that she seemed to give out every time she moved, maybe it was the way she smiled, he didn't know, but for some reason, he felt the need to ask her to be his friend. Cosmo smiled happily as Aldor explained his name, and when he mentioned Thor her eyes lit up. She didn't know much about any mythologies, but what she had heard peaked her curiosity to no end. One day she would ask someone to explain the differences between the Greek and Norse pantheons, but not today. A small furrow formed between her brows when she heard Aldor say he wasn't that strong.
"I think everyone has their own strengths you know, and we're only eleven! We've got ages to work on whatever we want to be strong at," she smiled after talking, hoping that she didn't sound too much like a know-it-all.
"Do you like your Grandpa?" Cosmo hadn't considered that people die, having never had anyone close to her pass away. If she had she may not have asked, not wanting to accidentally make Aldor any more nervous than he already was. It was very different talking with him, she thought. It may not flow the same way as a regular conversation but that didn't bother her, she just wanted to protect him.
"Oh my gosh, I had no idea there was a book about magical animals! I was raised as a muggle, and because I haven't done much reading yet I must have missed that," Cosmo paused for a moment wondering if Aldor might judge her for her next question, "does it have pictures at all?"
It was probably a terrible question to ask someone who loved books, but she genuinely wanted to know so she asked nonetheless.
"As for my favourite book I really like fantasy... all of them muggle, though. I used to get mum to read me The Nargun and The Stars all the time, and The Wind Boy is really nice too," Cosmo flushed very slightly. They were books aimed very specifically at younger children and she had a hard time admitting that she didn't read very well. She hoped that Aldor wouldn't judge her for it.

''I never met him- I've only heard stories that my aunt told me, she says that he is great and powerful, quite the comedian, and he wanted to make a world in which people could be happy and there wouldn't be more discrimination, a world in which magic isn't just- duels and proving who is better. Now he is just sort of crazy man, I would still like to talk to him at some point.''
Aldor chuckled a little, in reality (even if he didn't want to admit it) he really liked illustrated books, it helped to be inmersed into books, he didn't understand why someone would say that a book with pictures would be inferior to one without them, he loved all books equally. He gave her a kind smile and procceded to answer her question.

Cosmo listened wide eyed as Aldor talked about his Grandfather, the boy's namesake sounded to be an incredibly smart, and good man. The way Aldor spoke of him was full of admiration, and Cosmo was so glad to hear the boy talk about something that he loved so much.
"He sounds like a wonderful person to be named after, does he live in Britain? If he does you should definitely meet him - crazy or not," she grinned, sometimes crazy made people more interesting. At the mention of illustrations of magical creatures, Cosmo practically wiggled in her seat. She had very limited knowledge on animals in the wizarding world, only what she'd managed to hear passed around in conversation so she was eager to learn as much more as possible.
"Maybe you and I should go to the library together sometime! I feel like it might be a little easier to navigate it with someone else who knows the place, whatdya reckon?" she asked, brimming with excitement. Cosmo loved the way that Aldor was getting invested in the conversation, and hearing him talk about one of her childhood books brought a very special kind of joy. She felt a little proud to have been able to direct the conversation somewhere that he felt comfortable.
