My Own Personal Sunset

Nikolai was sat atop a mostly flat boulder, his legs pulled up against his chest, arms wrapped around them tightly, almost as if he was worried that they'd sprout up and leave if he let go. It was nearly sunset. He had promised Finnley, his closest friend he had ever had in his life, although he'd only known him for not even a year, that they'd watch the sunset together, at least once before the year was over.
Now, watching a sunset didn't seem like such an interesting feat, however, as a dhampir, Niko tried to spend the least amount of time in the sun as he could, which led to watching sunrises and sunsets not being an activity he typically would partake in. Nikolai adjusted his sleeves for the third time since he sat down, assuring that they fully covered his hands, even though they hadn't moved a centimetre since any of the previous adjustments.
He hadn't been sat down for more than ten to fifteen minutes, but for him it felt like forever. He knew Finnley would be coming soon, so he tried not to let himself worry over it too much. Finnley was the most reliable part of his life. He seemed to feel like no matter what crazy happenings occurred at Hogwarts, he'd always have his best friend by his side as a reminder that he wasn't the only student being uprooted from their typical lifestyle and brought to a whole new environment.
A soft smile crept to his lips as Nikolai thought fondly of his friend, casting his gaze into the deep blue of the Great Lake, letting his chin rest lightly against his knees. As he sat, listening to the soft crashes of the water against the shore and small creatures exploring the trees, he didn't notice his eyes drift shut, not quite asleep, but so relaxed that he might as well have been.

My Own Personal Sunset

Shoot, shoot, shoot! Finnley stumbled his way out of the Great Hall, shoving a couple of bread rolls into his bag that he snuck last minute. He'd been so caught up in a conversation about Pygmy Puffs that he almost forgot he was supposed to be meeting up with Niko. He could already imagine the grumpy look on his best friend's face from being made to wait for him. But any amount of grumpiness would be worth finally getting to watch a sunset with him. He'd been trying to get Niko outside to watch one for ages!
The thought of hanging out with Niko made his heart thump with excitement. They had hardly gotten to hang out that week, what with all their end-of-year exams that were coming up. (Not that either of them was particularly great at studying.) Needless to say, he was glad to have some chill time just between the two of them.
By the time he made it over to his and Niko's spot by the Great Lake, he had practically been skipping. He let out a relieved sigh when he saw Niko's slouched form atop his usual boulder, proof that he'd kept his promise. He knew Niko had been extra tense all week and was glad to see him without a mountain of school books.
Finnley hopped up onto the boulder next to Niko, jostling his shoulder. "Hey, wake up, dummy! You can't watch a sunset with your eyes closed." He flashed him his biggest smile, hoping some of his excitement would rub off on the boy next to him.

Nikolai must have been more asleep than he realised, because he was usually never startled by Finnley's loud demeanor, but this time, as his shoulder was shaken, he jolted awake and whipped his head to see the culprate, letting out relieved sigh when he realised it was just Finnley. He rolled his eyes and shot his friend his signature glare, turning his head to look back at the lake, trying to hide the smile his face was begging to reciprocate from just being around the boy.
"I was not sleeping" Niko remarked, though he really couldn't be sure. Even if he wanted to deny it, it was impossible to dismiss the fact that he wasn't conscious enough to hear an entire person skipping towards him. "I almost thought you'd forgotten" He added teasingly, bumping Finnley's shoulder with his own and flashing a slight grin. Although Nikolai had the wide brimmed hat that he purchased at the start of the year on, it wasn't doing much with the sun being so close to the horizon now. He didn't think the sunset would last long enough for him to get a burn, but he still hugged his legs closer to his chest, using his knees to shield his cheeks. "How much longer until it... does the thing do you think?" Nikolai said, forgetting for a moment the correct word he was looking for, "sets or whatever" he added.
Nikolai was excited, even if it didn't quite sound it. Although, it may have been less excitement about the actual sunset itself, and more about doing something that he knew would make Finnley so ecstatic. At least to Niko, his friend's happiness was quite contagious. So knowing that Finnley was happy would always make him equally so.
