Adonis watched the girl in front of her get claimed with a small smile as she bounced from foot to foot. My turn! My turn! The voices in her head chanted. Her gaze shifted over to the deep emerald green of the Slytherin table. Come on, come on!
All of that excitement, only for 'Hufflepuff' to wash over her like a blast of cold water.
Adonis winced, barley swallowing the urge to declare that the hat was wrong as she stood in front of the yellow table. Cool, cool cool cool. Mother and Father won't be.. to disappointed, will they?
"Adonis." She greeted, puffing out her chest in an attempt to appear not...whatever she was feeling. "Nice to meet everyone!" She sat down quickly after that, not wanting to look at her housemates for fear that she couldn't swallow whatever was bubbling in her chest.
Fingers tapping, the girl desperately looked for a distraction, she could find someone to fix the hat's mistake after the feast. Her eyes feel on someone else that seemed equally flustered. Perhaps they wanted to be a different house too?
"Hello, you're..." She racked her brain. The girl had introduced herself a second before Adonis, so... "Layla, right?" She asked, tapping the girl on her shoulder.

As Bekah told of her experience in finding out all about magic, Grant listened, trying to decide if having an actual wizard show up and explain would have been more awe inspiring than an owl with a letter or not. They were both probably pretty comparable. He nodded in understanding as Bekah said it was strange. "Yeah, I kept...thinking my cousins must be joking with me, though...they wouldn't really do that, or not keep it up that long, and Uncle Brent wouldn't, but still...", he shook his head with that awed expression still on his face, but as they'd both said, it was a lot to get used to unless you were given information from the beginning.

He glanced briefly to the others at the table, and even some still joining them or other tables before smiling back over to Bekah, glad, again, of the idea of having made a friend so quickly here and just after being sorted it seemed.

The top of the castle did sound amazing. Grant wasn't sure if that would be part of the tour, but he now thought Bekah's suggestion of the possibility a good one, even if they would probably just be shown to their separate dorms or such. "I hope now they do!", he grinned, next shaking his head as she asked if he had any further knowledge on what the schedule might be.

"Not really, other than mentioning that magic was how what I called good luck happened, and mentioning the school. Said I'd learn the rest here.", he answered as to if his uncle had told him how it all worked. "It's odd, he didn't mention the hat at all, and...I would think he, or my cousins, would have".

Grant would soon find this wasn't unusual and that no one's family mentioned the hat for some reason. Maybe it was just a secret and at graduation (assuming he graduated. Hopefully) he and the other new students of this year would be told not to tell either.

Bekah had asked about his Mum too, and though Grant was tempted to just move past it, in the spirit of their new friendship he also didn't want to. "Um...and...no, my Mum didn't tell me anything. She and my da' passed away in a car crash when I was little, so I live with my uncle and cousins".

Maybe that was why Uncle Brent didn't think magic particularly useful if it hadn't been able to stop that. Yet, Grant didn't want to say something like that when they were both looking forward to the prospect of what magic could maybe do, and he was a generally hopeful kid and able to believe in the promise of proving magic useful in his time here.

Same as Ben and Sarah had by their successful years here he'd only just learned about.

He cleared his throat, and perhaps a bit forced and moved on from further mentioning his mother, right now anyway, as he glanced down the table again.

"I guess it's also magic, them always having room at the tables for the amount of students per table and House to show up. I mean...they can't possibly know beforehand...can they?". How much did the professors know or control?

Layla felt a sudden tap on her shoulder, she flinched. "Layla, right?" the girl asked. Layla turned and kept her eyes on the girl's slightly antsy hands. This reminded Layla of her first day of classes in primary school. Every year, a nice child would come up to Layla and offer conversation, but she couldn't pluck up the courage to join or even look at them. That child would quickly call Layla rude and run away. Every year was the same.

But Layla wanted this year to change, she needed it to. So she compromised with herself and turned to the kind housemate to speak. She couldn't help but keep her eyes on the girl's hands, holding her big glasses up as to not let them fall. But she did let a few words fall out.

"Yes...v-very nice to meet you..." Layla said as she softly moved her hand over for the kind girl to shake.

Apparently, Paige had never heard of house-elves. Lucia was a little surprised for a moment, but then decided that not every family had a house-elf. Indeed, the Foxes only had their house-elf, Rosa, because she'd gotten her cheap. Rosa's previous owner had been a friend of Lucia's father's, and had bought Rosa to be a cook. Unfortunately for them both, Rosa was a terrible cook, and when Ebony visited him a few weeks after Antony's disappearance, he offered her Rosa for a quarter of the usual price of a house-elf - partly out of pity, and partly because he wanted to get rid of her somehow. Ebony had never been one to taking gifts born of pity, but had immediately seen the opportunity in this one and had accepted readily. Now, Rosa manned the counter in the wizarding section of the family bookshop, Fox's Magic Shop.
"Well, they're elves..." Lucia paused, trying to figure out a way to explain it. "They're sort of like servants, I guess. Here at Hogwarts, they cook the food, clean the dorms and common-rooms, work as library assistants; that sort of thing. But they don't mind. They like it. They wouldn't be here if they didn't." Lucia had been brought up under the not-entirely-accurate allusion that all house-elves thoroughly enjoyed their jobs.

When Paige next spoke, everything made sense. "Ooohhhh," Lucia said, with the air of one who had just figured out a puzzle. "You're a muggleborn, right?" Then she suddenly realised what she was saying and flushed. "Merlin. Uh, not that there's anything wrong with that," she added quickly. "I have loads of friends who are muggleborn." Well, not loads, exactly, but perhaps a little white lie was best in this case, to make Paige feel more at home. Lucia's previous annoyance towards the first year faded away now that she knew why Paige was asking her questions, and she tried not to feel bad when the other girl turned her back on her, instead talking to the boy next to her.

"Um, sorry, I guess..." Lucia muttered into her plate, before quickly finishing her food and getting up. Time to go up to her dormitory. Then she remembered Paige and turned to her again, tapping her on the shoulder to get her attention. "Paige. Do you want me to show you to the dorms? I think you missed the tour." Whether Paige accepted her offer or not, Lucia would leave the dining room.

You had to admire her effort. Lucia's. She was just a bit annoyed. Why wouldn't she be? Paige tried to think of what it would be like to be in her place. That would be hard.

Let's see. So I'd be sitting, and I already know all this stuff she just told me. Then a new kid turns and asks me a bunch of questions out of nowhere when I'm just trying to eat, Yeah.

Nope.

She couldn't see anything wrong with that. She would have been totally fine with that. Probably. That's who she was as a person and Lucia was not.

Paige and the boy exchanged some words before she would continue eating, wondering why house elves enjoyed their work. Was it like the way she loves sports? She felt like she can't live without them. Gives her a purpose. That kind of makes sense, Maybe they felt like it gave them a purpose. Paige was startled as Lucia spoke.

Right. The dorms.

Those things. Paige had honestly missed the tour and she felt her face flush. She also felt bad for making Lucia feel bad. "Hmm? Oh, it's alright. I did miss the tour, thanks " She said, smiling.
