History/Background Story:

Nikolai was born on the 5th of October, 2008 to a Edward Carleton and Eva Valtersen in Bergen, Norway where Edward was studying Scandinavian dragons. Eva had hoped they would raise their family in Norway, but Edward insisted that Nikolai be sent to the same school he had gone to as a child back in the UK. Up until Nikolai received his letter and was admitted into Hogwarts, he split his time between his uncompromising parents. Half the year in Bergen with his mother, and the other half in Brighton with his father. Edward was happy to get an owl from Niko celebrating that he'd been sorted into Slytherin as he had hoped.

Nikolai is an only child, and his family never struggled with money, or if they did, they put him first so he'd be none the wiser. Edward came from a pureblood family, so when they found that his wife wasn't a pureblood, they criticised him and cast him out of the family to live on his own without their help, physically or monetarily.

On Niko's 5th birthday, he was out climbing trees, his father keeping watch. Nikolai had gotten pretty high up when he lost his footing and began to fall. Edward, who swears he only took his eyes off the boy for a second turned his head just in time to see a branch reach out and catch his son, softening the landing with a pillow of leaves. After the immediate worry, he was relieved and excited that his son was magical, worrying that he'd raised a squib.
