Right on Target
Sunday, April 25, 2021
Calypso Starling walked with her bow slung over her shoulder and her quiver ofarrows clipped to her belt at her waist. Well, they weren't hers, she hadn't brought her archery supplies to Hogwarts, not foreseeing an opportunity to shoot in the near future. These belonged to the school. Apparently, Hogwarts had had an archery program sometime back in the 18- or 1900s, but it had been defunct for quite some time. The targets, bows, and arrows had sat in a shed collecting dust for a few generations. But with a little hard work (and some help from magic, of course) they were restored and ready to go.
Cal reached the outdoor club area where, a few hours before, a line of multicolored targets had been assembled, and in front of each a standing quiver of arrows and a bow lay in the grass. No one had arrived yet. Calypso was early, as she was the club leader. She couldn't believe that when she'd been missing the archery team back home and had the idea, found out about the old supplies remaining untouched, and made her pitch for a club, the staff had actually said yes! Hjørdis Jensen, the Head of Slytherin, had begrudgingly agreed to be the club's chaperone. Even at Hogwarts, you couldn't have a group of unsupervised kids shooting projectile weapons. Cal was a bit intimidated by her, but was glad for her help. Her only regret was that Ashley Coulson, one of her best friends since coming to Hogwarts, wasn't here to share it with her. Just this last month, Ash's family had decided to move to France, and now her friend was a student at Beauxbatons. They sent letters, but it wasn't quite the same.
The young Gryffindor double-checked that there was no one around to get in the way, took her stance in front of one of the targets, and aimed. When she released, she found she had hit the red, one ring out from the middle. Not bad. A few more times she shot. Putting down her bow, she checked her wrist watch. 10:55. People should be arriving soon. Better stop shooting then. There was a stump a few yards away from the targets, and she sat down on it to wait. A few minutes later, the first member arrived.

Anyone who is a member of the club (who has signed up here) may post in this thread. Keep in mind, I will not start the actual teaching of archery until our chaperone, @Hjordis Jensen arrives for IC reasons. But before she posts, feel free to role-play your character showing up and interacting with Calypso (please do not god-mod me). I shall make a second post where Cal gives instructions after Professor Jensen shows up. Good day!

Suzuki had some experience with Kyudo, the Japanese version of archery, but before she could get super into it, her aunt had kicked the bucket.@Calypso Starling
Kicked it hard, too.
Super hard.
So hard it fell over.
Ha.
The Japanese version included a lot of glove-wearing, and there was a specific way you had to tie your hair back (for girls, at least- long-haired ones). Of course, that wasn't possible with Suzuki's short hair. She'd just worn it the way she always did.
Not sure about what she should bring (as if she still had the dusty bow set from all those years ago), Suzuki had brought her old pair of gloves that she'd used to Kyudo. They still fit (weird, but still), and Suzuki still had them. She wasn't sure if the Japanese version and the British version were the same, but it was still worth a shot.
Although there were some instances where Suzuki had snapped bowstrings, the main reason she never excelled at the sport was because of her eyesight. Her goddammed eyesight. It ruined everything. But despite that, Suzuki could still shoot some targets up close. She'd practiced- there were some competitions back then where you had to shot close-up targets on a moving horse.
She liked the horse part.
At least she could still be a beater- bludgers were pretty easy to spot.
ADHD was also a problem- Suzuki couldn't help fidgeting when pulling the bowstring back and aiming.
It had taken her a while to get out of Hogwarts (the staircase again), but finally, she'd made it outside. It was a pretty nice day- the view, like always, was excellent. The Scottish mountains loomed around them, and Suzuki noticed a girl already there, sitting on a tree stump. From what she knew about the club, the girl was probably Calypso Starling, the leader.
Jogging the last few meters, Suzuki stopped at the edge of the nicely set up field. She nodded to Calypso.

Archery
All Aurora know was it was cool. Her knowledge about archery was fifty percent from that muggle books and movies about the survival games and the world inside a closet, while the other fifty percent was from her dream of being a winner of the archery Olympic. She never sees a bow and an arrow in real life, let alone touch them. All those people on screen who held bows and arrows had at least a couple percent more in the intimidating department. Since some people said Aurora's presence was somewhat terrible, she might as well scare people off some more with her very questionable archery skill.
Excited was an understatement. Aurora was looking forward to the first meeting of the archery club since she sign up. To finally shoot her first arrow hopefully not a living being made Aurora flabbergasted with immense joy.
The brown-haired Ravenclaw walked happily to the outdoor club area. She saw colourful shooting targets and two other students from afar. It looked like one of them just arrived not long before Aurora, while the other one was the club leader. Aurora speeded up her walk and greet both of them.
"Hi, n-nice day isn't it?"
"I'm Aurora Ranvier, by the way." She paused for a couple of seconds, then added, "Nice to meet you two"

Honestly, Elena was the last person you would think was involved in any sort of physical or outside activies such as shooting a bow and arrow. She had never even thought such a thing could even be feasible at Hogwarts but at the same time, it had seemed like a very creative and cool idea that had peaked her interest so the Gryffindor had decided to give it a shot. She was a complete novice, sure, she knew what a bow was and where the arrow went but as for the actual process of how to shoot one, Elena was sure like the majority of students who would flock to this outing, her skill level was next to nothing but she had thought it would be a cool little thing to add to her arsenal. That being said, the idea of putting sharp-tipped arrows in the hands of children didn't exactly put her at ease either but she took comfort in the fact that there would be at least some form of supervision or at least she hoped. These days, it seemed like everything needed supervision or else something almost aways wound up going wrong even if you thought it wouldn't.
Dressed in some jeans and a sweater for the outside to compensate for the physical requirements of the task, Elena swiftly made her way to where everyone was supposed to be gathering. She wondered just how tough or demanding this particular little thing was going to be. She had seen imagery and examples of the art in practice and it didn't seem too terribly diffcult. You just put an arrow on the string and fired it, that had made sense in her brain until she had taken to her books days before the meeting to hopefully walk into this a bit more prepared than the others. That was the day she had learned about bow weights, arrow quality and a whole bunch of other factors that went into this practice and suddenly, Elena realized it was not as simple as it looked. She had to comprhend the fact that people actually did this for a living, for hobbies and all of them made it look so easy. Elena on the other hand just wanted to get proficent enough so that she could have something to be proud of so it was more of a sentimental mission for her that she was not going to give up on.
A few students were already gathered, none of which were particularly familar to her but she still gave them the courtesy of a greeting. "Hey, guys. Ready for some shooting?" Some light-hearted banter to break the ice and hopefully allievate the nerves that Elena was sure most of them were feeling. She did not want to be the odd one out that made that one embarrassing mistake or failed to grasp a concept, there was always that one person and the brunette was going to make damn sure it was not her. She just hoped she didn't wind up sticking an arrow into someone else or something or vice verse. No one's aim could be that bad, could it? She decided not to dwell on that particular thought too much giving their practice area an curious glance. Targets had been assembled and their bows and arrows lay waiting to be used. She smoothed her hair back tying it back into a ponytail as they waited, potential possibilites going through her head of how today's archery session would go.
Amidst the nervousness, Elena had to admit this was a fun little thing that had been organized. She wasn't going to complain about that.

Hogwarts Archery Club. When the posters had gone up it had caught his eye. Sport related clubs were practically non-existent at Hogwarts, unless you counted Quidditch. There was a martial arts club but they hadn’t been particularly active, nor did they have an actual sensei and Kazuo had no experience of his own in that arena. Archery, though, he knew enough about to not require a teacher. Which was good because this club didn’t have a sensei either, just a chaperone in the Slytherin Head of House.
It had taken some time for the club to get up and running and in that time, Kazuo had sent a letter to his parents. Not too long after the letter had been sent, Kazuo had received a package containing what he would need to participate. He carefully unpacked the hankyu yumi and uniform, checking everything over to make sure it hadn’t gotten damaged in transit. Donning the uniform, he carried the canvas carrier the bow was stored in down to the club area.
His gaze scanned the grounds, taking in the line of targets and the waiting students. Calypso, the club’s organizer, Suzuki, a first year who had joined his own club, and two girls he didn’t recognize. He waved to them as he approached, smiling brightly. “Ohayo! Good weather for shooting.” He greeted the others as he reached them. He took out the Japanese style bow and began to string it while they waited for their Adult Supervision to arrive.

moodboard ❖ bow & arrow @Kazuo ShimadaShe was late. She kept being late. It was infuriating, really, especially when it was to a club like this, where she was comfortable with her ability to shoot straight and true. She’d had lessons as a child, enough not to need a large amount of guidance. She’d not known if the club itself had bows, so she’d owled word home for one. The housekeeper had sent her one of her mother’s bows, saying that her old one was too small by now. Her mother’s bow was beautiful, with patterns swathed across the surface and a leather grip. The arrows themselves were fine as well and sharp, stuffed tightly into their quiver. She’d chosen to wear more than a few layers today — a green coat and a few jumpers — over a long, dark green skirt and white shirt to guard against the uncharacteristic cold. Muggle clothing wasn’t her forte, but she thought that perhaps she’d give it a go today. Regardless, there were bound to be some muggle-borns to advise her on her fashion sense.
Heading across the grounds, she spied the archery area, where targets had been laid out and a few students were already milling around. She saw that there were bows provided — she needn’t have brought her own, but she trusted her own more that the school’s, which looked like they had been around for more than a few centuries. Continuing over to the archery club, she looked around. She recognised a few of the people there, and of course, Calypso, the leader of the writing club she had joined. She had been fairly excited when the club came out — she never had the opportunity to do this sort of thing any more.
When she finally arrived at the club’s spot, she noticed that there wasn’t an adult chaperone around, and nobody had begun shooting. She had heard word that her own head of house would be supervising, but she clearly had not shown up yet. She saw a boy, who had also brought his own bow, so she slung hers over her shoulder and approached him. “Hello,” she said, extending her hand towards him in greeting. She’d seen him at the book repairing errand in the library the other day. “I don’t think we’ve properly met before — I’m Anja Murtaja."

Lucia had never held a bow before, and never actually seen anyone use one in real life. Well, it couldn't be too hard, could it? You just pulled the string back and aimed. Right? No real skill required. After all, there were plenty of book characters who were good with a bow. (Of course, most of them were Muggle books. Why would anyone magical really need to use a bow and arrow to hunt or in combat? They had their wand, didn't they?) Katniss Everdeen, obviously. Artemis. Apollo. Practically the entirety of the Apollo cabin at Camp Half-Blood. Will Solace. Frank. Wait, now Lucia was just mentally listing Rick Riordan characters. Well, there were more, but Lucia couldn't remember them right now. Right now, she was too excited about having a go herself.
She was a little late, so Lucia thought, so she speed-walked down to the outdoor club area, trying not to let her anticipation bubble over her and blow her head off or something. Ew. Why had she just thought that? Maybe she was better just not thinking anything. Luckily, it didn't matter much, because it only took Lucia a minute or so to arrive.
There was a line of targets - cool - and bows - cool! - and quivers of arrows - cool!!! - all of which made Lucia beam. She was going to shoot an arrow, from a bow, and have a quiver! Willow was going to be so jealous. As Lucia drew closer, she discovered that, actually, there weren't all that many students there yet - either everyone else was later than she was, or her watch was wrong. Seeing how old the timepiece was, it was probably the latter. "Hello!" she called, and then - "Wait, you have your own bows?" she asked the only boy in the club area and the girl he was talking to. Well, what she was really asking was should I?

Date: Sunday, April 25, 2021Winter had brought her own bow with her, it was made by natives in alaska when she had visited there. Her bows and arrow are hand made by the people of the wilderness. She slipped her quiver over her head, resting it on her shoulder. She gripped her bow rightly as she made her way down to the meeting place, where all the other clubs were located. The arrows slightly bounced around in her quiver as she stepped yet they somehow remained in their place.
Winter had made it to the large opening. She scanned the area, finding a nice shaded area not too far from some others. She made her way through the field, wearing a long black cloak to protect her from the sun. Each step she took, was only inches from the train of the cloak brushing the dew drops off of the morning grass. Eventually she made her way past some students, saying nothing, just continuing to walk. Winter had reached the shaded area, now removing her hood from her head and showing a slight smile. She walked to a tree with an outgrown branch. She then unbuckled the front of her robe, and slipped it off of her shoulders. She lifted it and hung it on the rather sturdy branch, as she walked over to the shooting range.
Instead of covering up her entire body as she normally had, to protect herself from the sun, she wore short sleeves and shorts, after all she needed her arm guard and it wouldn't help if her hoodie was displacing it constantly. She slipped her archery glove over her right hand as she adjusted it to fit tightly to her wrist. The sun wasn't too bright so she would be fine, besides she was sticking closer to the shadows anyways. She put her hair into a braid and pulled an arrow from her quiver. She clasped her hand tighter around the grip of the bow as she put the arrow in place, pulling back to tighten the string. She closed her left eye and aimed with her right. With the arrow head pointed directly at the target, she sighed and released the string. With the sling and the force used, the arrow quickly took flight.
"Bullseye..."
The arrow hit the target dead center, right in the small red circle. She didn't know if anyone was watching her strike the targets but she continued anyways, only focused on aiming perfectly. She took two arrows out this time, resting one on the bow and placing the other in her mouth. She ran to the side and fired the arrow, sending it right at another target. She turned quickly, taking the other arrow out of her mouth and placing it on the bow. Once more she fired. Both arrows hit the targets in the tiny red dot, all while in motion. Winter was making it look so easy, i suppose practice truly does make perfect.
She peered over at Lucia and the others. "Hmm i wonder if anyone's gunna come over here..." winter said to herself as she went to the targets, retrieving her arrows. Winter had arrived there and spent no time waiting, she got right to shooting. She look at the boy, he too had his own bow. And the other girls, they all just had ones provided by the school. She waved to them as if to say 'hey there' from a distance. She waited to see if anyone would wave back before getting right back to shooting. Every so often winter would peer away to the others shooting, studying each of their techniques. She sort-of hoped someone would make their way over to her... but if they didn't that was fine, after all nobody came here to just chat, they came to shoot that's why they joined this club, right?

moodboard ❖ bow & arrow @Winter WolfhartzAnja's attention was arrested by the sight of a girl hitting an arrow right into the centre of the target. Anja wandered over to her and stretched out her hand in greeting, hoping that the girl would have enough manners to accept it. "Hello," she said, "I'm Anja Murtaja. Pleasure to meet you." She turned away from the girl to look at the arrow embedded in the target. She could see that the girl had most likely received lessons before. She grasped her bow and pulled out an arrow before asking, "Mind if I try?" She hadn't yet tried shooting in this club.
Stepping forwards to the target, she pulled the bowstring back, taut, exhaled and shot. The arrow hit directly on the line between the bullseye and the centre ring, right above the girl's arrow. She shot another two arrows, creating a ring around the bullseye, before stepping back and looking at the girl, asking What's your name? She made sure the girl wasn't shooting before stepping forwards to collect her arrows. She pulled them out, leaving three well-spaced holes. She put the arrows back into the quiver. You're a very good shot, she stated, then asked, did you get lessons when you were younger? I used to shoot with my parents when we visited Finland. She had, but she really rather preferred when it was only her and her father -- his friends often took to shooting animals rather than just trees or targets.
She walked back towards the girl, slinging her bow over her shoulder alongside her quiver. "Would you like to shoot again? she asked, gesturing towards the target. "If you don't mind, I'd like to see your technique." She smiled cordially at the girl, wondering which house she was in.

Winter had shot another arrow as a girl had walked up to her. She reached out and shook the strangers hand with a slight smile. "H-hi" she said as the girl had introduced herself as Anja, watching as the girl turned to look at the arrow. It had seemed as if Anja had been thinking about how well winter had been doing. Perhaps wondering where she learned?
"Go ahead" winter stepped back, out of the shooting range, watching as the girl shot her arrows. Winter had been interested in this girl, her shot was not bad at all just off by a very tiny bit. Winter looked at the ring Anna had made and tilted her head, not too bad. It was obvious this wasn't the girls first time shooting, she had probably had practice, or had went to some sort of training class. "Winter Wolfhartz.." she replied to Anja's question. As the arrows were pulled out of the target leaving behind piercings, winter was waiting for any further question Anja may have had.
Winter smiled at the compliment 'good shot' "your not too bad yourself" winter had throw a compliment right back as another question poured in. "I've never taken any lessons me and my aunt actually learned together on our own.. my cousin was the only one who really knew how to shoot but he was no help all he told us was 'pull the string back and release' yet we had no idea how much more there was to it.." she felt like she had rambled, turning her attention to the target again.
"Once i learned i was better than my whole family.. so i would help my aunt hunt, we would sell the animals to our neighbor he collected the pelts" she added, tightening and loosening the string to test how far she could range. She nodded when asked if she had wanted to shoot again. "Huh- oh yeah sure" she took an arrow out of her quiver and placed it against the bow. She pulled back the string and closed her left eye, raised her elbow slightly, let out a silent breath and released. Once more the arrow flew cutting through the air, directly into the center of the target. Lowering her bow she walked over, retrieving her arrow and placing it back in the quiver. Winter let a grin show on her face.
"So.. how's my form?"
